Hi everyone, I've had nothing but trouble uploading videos over the last few days and I really don't know why. I don't think this video has uploaded in the usual high quality resolution. I will try to fix this as soon as I can! Thanks
Oh, the fun we had!!! Late 70s, early 80s, (why am I so old, how did that even happen!?) my dad bought a five-man dinghy with an outboard. For two weeks in summer, off the beautiful North Devon coast, we'd drop a string of feathers down to the sea bed, 200 or so yards off the rocks, reel up a couple of foot and pump that rod. Within minutes, the rod was bent over and a string of gorgeous blue tiger striped mackerel would come up. Occasionally the odd pollack or garfish too. We couldn't stay out for longer than an hour or two max, 'cus the boat would be full of fish! Oh, how I loved those fresh mackerel barbecued! We'd walk around the camp site, Big Meadow, near Coombe Martin, and sell the fish 10p a pop to the other campers. 🤍
Once the mackerel fishing was a given. Never considered NOT catching them in the Summer. Now the numbers are pathetic compared to 30 - 40 years ago. Not seen a decent catch on Brighton Marina this year yet. The best month was June when they would appear in their thousands! Using 6 feathers was asking for trouble you got 6 every time. I used to float fish. The float never cocked - just went straight down! The foreign factory ships destroyed the stock and it takes DECADES to recover 😬😬😬 Great video Call! But make sure you emphasise retuning those you don't need. They could become an endangered species!
Not 1 mackerel me and a mate caught between us last year around Belfast, Bangor. Haven’t bothered going out for them this year. Mackerel fishing is away to the dogs here. Sea fishing in general actually
Hi from Australia. Nice video, interesting to note north region fisherman catching mackerels. We call them slimmy mackerels. Large size upto 50cm. Our summer run of mackerels starts early December. I usually catch at night. Catch one mackerel and use it for bait. Each bait sliced lasts about 5 catches. Our limit is 50 fish per day. Only takes about 30 minutes to 45 minutes to fill in a bucket. There fun on little 10gram metal lures, too.
Great stuff, although I thought when you said light tackle it would be a lot lighter. The fight from mackerel and pollack is incredible on really light tackle. I've used trout fly rods, slow sinking line and sea trout flies.
Great on light gear. I fish a Dexter wedge with 2 sabiks in front of it. Often when one hits just hold and wait for the rest to hit the other two. Top video, love your tips and guidance.
Yeah that's a good way to go about it. Also great from a boat too, you will often get a good pollock on the lure below the feathers won't you. Thanks a lot 👍🏼
I normally dont target them, only the pollock. Tried a low water mark today. First mackrell on a soft plastic and then one on a 24g metal jig like yours and then another 2-3 on feathers. I was testing the water as you did but didnt have the same span of water due to rocks and weed. At least i know they are there if the pollock dont show up.
Metal cherry broken ! the seekers and small line threw 3D metals from savage gear are awesome when you get them moving you can fish any depth and the pulsing you get threw the rod is so satisfying 🥰🥰
Loved it Cal. I love those little lures. Bought a few from MICKS, they also have the slightly bigger one. Very versatile lure, jigging from kayak, boat and from rocks. I have had a few pollock as well!!
I plan on giving metals more water time this year, especially from the kayak. The majorcraft ones I ordered have arrived. They're literally the exact same as that sidewinder one but 20g not 30g. I'll be hoping to find a few pollock on them from the kayak too 👍🏼 I'll be getting out in the kayak soon so next time the weathers good we'll have to go for a cruise on the west coast.
More cooking Cal .love your videos , like your lasts release on Ninja woodfire cooker , have picked up a good few tips from you, would have loved to see you cook the Bass for your girlfriend . Keep up the good work , regard Pat from Ireland
Those metals work really well on a sink a draw mate, a lot of the time you’ll get hits on the drop at they flutter down through the water column, another good video 🎣
Very nice fishing , cool fishes friend ! Also wanna ask to everyone here , is there any chance for me to catch fishes near Chester , UK . ? Or near fish zones to Chester . ? I like sea fishing much . Thanks in advance for answers .
great video glad your share the fish !! some happy folk . cooking tip try ginger and Garlic and curry powder in the frying pan serve with coconut rice and peas God bless
Thanks. I've tried for a mullet a few times so far this year but still haven’t caught one yet, only garfish! I plan on going again soon though, it’s definitely something i can see myself really getting into.
Awesome mate!! Cant beat mackerel on lures, such great fighting fish. They are also superb eating. TBH, didn't notice the quality until I read your comment - of course it matters but when you fish in paradise it makes up for it. I also threw some feathers and lures today but off the beach on the South Coast (Shoreham). Although there were seagulls in large patches, they were far out to sea and I had no luck.
Thanks mate! I'm still having trouble with uploading videos, I really don't understand what's going on. I finally managed to upload this one after hours of trying, then realised it wasn't in HD. Unlucky with the fishing today, keep trying and I'm sure you'll be into some soon! 👍🏼
Great video! What breaking strain line are you using on your light tackle? I'm hoping to get out on the west wales coast this summer looking for mackerel.
Cheers 👍🏼 I use 20lb braid on that rod. To be fair, you could go much lighter if targeting mackerel, an LRF set up will be good fun. This is the rod I use for my general lure fishing though.
@@FISHINGWITHCAL Thanks, I might go with 15-20lb, in the hope I can get hold of some Bass too. Is Braid that much better than Mono? Would I as a beginner see much benefit in investing an extra £20 or so in Braid?
@@aledafis Personally, I’d go with braid all day long for lure fishing. You may find it a bit weird getting used to using it but once you get a feel for it you won’t look back. The whole point of light lurefishing is to get some sport out of it, hence the light rods and smaller reels. The braid will allow you to feel everything through the rod and you can work lures a lot more effectively with it. Just make sure you spool the reel with the correct amount of line and you’ll be good to go. Also, don’t buy cheap braid! Get something that a local tackle shop suggests by someone who actually uses it themselves. 👍🏼
It's further south than south west haha. It's in Guernsey in the Channel Islands mate. Our coastline is very similar to parts of the SW of England though. Thanks 👍🏼
Thanks for subscribing 👍🏼 I'd go for an 11.6ft rod with a 5000 size reel as an all rounder. Many brands do well priced rods of that size that will cover you for throwing out feathers for mackerel, float fishing, pier fishing and you could even do some close in beach fishing with that. Go for a 2-4oz. You could load the reel with mono, anything between 15-25lb will be ideal. You'll be able to get a decent set up for 100 pound which will last years 👍🏼
@@FISHINGWITHCAL cheers. Any rod and reel you’d recommend specifically? Been looking at savage gear and shimano reels. I’m alright to spend a bit. I’d prefer to be able to use it for the foreseeable without having to spend again in a year or two.
@@Tom-hl7wc I use shimano reels on my lure rods. I use Penn for my beach rods, they’re super strong and can put up with a lot. Are you talking about a rod for general fishing? Not a lure rod?
