Every Saturday morning I watched Star Fleet religiously. Never understood that it was a dubbed Japanese show but finding that out later on just increased my appreciation of it. I really hope some more model kits from Star Fleet/ X-Bomber get produced. I'd love to get a lot of X-Bomber itself and particularly Commander Makara's Alliance battlecruiser which, in my humble opinion, is one of the best starship designs in all of sci-fi! Kind of looked like a cross between a shark, a catfish and a malevolent caterpillar. Excellent show, nice model kit. Thanks Dave.
Dave, You have unearthed a true gem from my childhood. I was a huge fan of Starfleet and religiously watched every Saturday morning. Loved the ship, the crew, Dai-X and even poor old Captain Orion who bore endless abuse from head baddy Commander Makara. Even the sound track was great and covered by Brian May as you say (being a rocker I still have it in my music collection!) Doesn't get better than that!
I got mine direct from Japan when they were released. Love finally having a Dai X to go with the X Bomber toy I managed to get years ago. You can add a bit of detail just by painting it up to match the prototype images. They skipped a few details for production. The one part that really bugged me is the engine cones for the Main Body. For some reason they are white in the kit, should be grey. Stands out when contrasted with the fists. If I remember right Humbrol 67 is a good match for the grey plastic. Looks much better painted to match.
I used to watch star fleet every Saturday morning before the world of sport wrestling on granada. My personal claim to fame my second cousin paul bliss, composed and sung the music for the English dub of star fleet(Xbomber). Something I’m extremely proud of. As always Dave keep it awesome👍👍👍
That looked like a fun build. I used to watch Star Fleet. DaiX is the toy I would have loved as a kid. That kit looked very similar to a Ban-Dai kit. Myself and my son made a couple of gunpla this past couple of weeks and it was great fun. Good Smile brand are good, they make the anime looking figures with big heads, Nendoroid I think they are called.
Good that you mention Brian May and his ‘Star Fleet Project’ EP but it isn’t in fact the show’s soundtrack. That credit goes to Paul Bliss who was commissioned to score the western/English adaption of the show resulting in a superb, synth heavy soundtrack that inspired Brian and is well worth tracking down on CD! Anyway, that’s a great looking model and I too have tried to buy vintage X Bomber kits/toys over the years but as you say, they go for silly money!
I LOVED Starfleet as a kid. Not many of my friends remember it but I loved this, Mighty Orbots and of course Voltron and I would have loved toys of all of them but we only got Voltron figures in my part of the world. I think it’s a great piece you’ve got there Dave!
I've never seen either of the cartoons. It looks like it would be something I would definitely enjoy, especially as a kid. The model itself I know for a fact I would. I've always enjoyed this style of kit. I like the fact that it's a model, but sort of an action figure at the same time. Not as static as typical kits. Awesome build video. Thanks again for everything you do.
I find it intersting how Good Smile have not only made Big Dai X but they also released the Thunderbird from Thunderbirds 2086, so two shows which came out in the UK in the 80's. I would greatly enjoy to see the X Bomber itself just so I can place it next to the Thunderbird as a mini collection :)
Understood on how expensive things from Japan can be. A couple of decades ago I paid over eighty dollars for a 12-inch Spectreman figure -- and that was just for the SUIT. The body the suit was made for would have been an extra hundred dollars, so I just slapped the suit onto a generic military figure body from Wal-Mart. I always liked the one-season Spectreman better than Ultraman so to me, it was worth it. 😉
Have very little memory of Star Fleet but I do remember drawing the Star on my school jotters, teacher thought I was drawing pentagrams of protection 😂
While I wasn’t a huge fan of the series, these model kits are pretty cool. The transformations and posability makes it a fun toy along with the added joy of building it. Fantastic Share, Dave!
Starfleet ran on cable in the US as well. But I only ever watched it in Japanese with the original awesome music. So the English dub version with different music, i.e. the version you all know, is very weird to me. Anyway, Good Smile is a very prominent figure manufacturer, especially 1/4-scale figures.
Great video Dave and Happy New Year! I was really impressed with this kit, great materials, easy to follow instructions and he looks amazing once finished. Just debating whether to add a dirt wash. Who would have thought we would get a Dai X figure all these years later 😄
Excellent I had complete set of the old smaller kits and had to let them go at one point and since then the prices for replacing have been silly - this retooling is impressive and ordered one immediately. Starfleet was brilliant and far superior to the Terahawks junk that was around at the same time. It's out of print now but if you can find the Japanese Blu-ray which has the 24 English dubbed and recut Starfleet episodes and and the original 25 Japanese X-Bomber episodes.
FYI: The show was made available on Standard Definition Blu-Ray a few years back by Discotek Media, and it includes the original X-Bomber version too! It's out-of-print now, but it's definitely worth tracking down a copy.
Good Smile Company makes pretty good stuff. I have a few of there figures. I’ve never built one of there model kits, so I’m looking forward to how this turns out.
Loved this show as a kid alongside Terrahawks and Fireball XL5. DVD set available on Amazon, Zavvi and HMV. How funny you’re review just gone up, my buddy Darren has literally reviewed and built this on his UA-cam channel a few days ago on Dazatrons Dioramallama, I would get this and the Gatchaman God Phoenix but prices are a little steep for me, plus I haven’t the space right now to be fair 😁
I've not looked at that one. Will check it out. This was a fun build, I'm just not sure it's really worth what I paid. But it is the only toy/kit I have from this show.
Great kit! Loved Star Fleet as a kid - Still really want to watch the Japanese original! I'm guessing it's a bit like Battle of The Planets and was chopped up (edited) for Western audiences? The Brian May music is awesome though (was that in the Japanese version?)
Being a Star Fleet/X-Bomber fan, I almost pre-ordered that bad-boy for myself. Wife "convinced" me not to. Now experiencing regurts, may have to replace wife and hunt down Dai-X at presumably hugely inflated prices.
Hi Dave, I’m pleased to that I received my annual today and I’m thoroughly enjoying reading it, I’m currently reading the collecting vintage Star Wars on a budget, I won’t go into too much detail as I don’t want to spoil anything for those who haven’t yet grabbed a copy, now as I’m more of an eBay and vintage toy shop buyer, I do go to toy fairs perhaps 3 times a year, but I find it’s so tough to get bargains now, it seems even when finding the odd beaten up figure in a vintage shop on the high street they tend to be £5-10, do you have any tips for toy fairs specifically how to find bargains? One thing I am trying to do right now is get a few ewoks, to make a display for my ewok village but I don’t want to pay lots of money for them, any tips or tricks you have I may not have considered? Once again the annual is a real delight, you’ve done a great job with it👍🏻
Does this have anything to do with Dyjupiter? I remember having a random toy as a kid back in the 80’s we had no idea what it was, sort of wedge shaped, had an orange dome on the back that opened, and a sort of little lift that went up and down. Had two wings that folded down and two big storage compartments at the front, one flapped down like a draw bridge one lifted up. Took years to finally figure out what it was called, but no idea what it was from, we used it as a mobile base for transformers and then action force.
Have the boxset of ths on dvd, and 2 x 10" mini lp's by Sir Dr Brian May, and Eddie van Halen, along with the 7" , saw a dai-x watch on ebay recently that was interesting, and think when describing show, have to say a mix of thunderbirds, transformers, and power rangers.
Good review, I was thinking of purchasing this but I think I will pass now I understand what it is, plus like you say it is about £80 which is a bit pricey, but thanks for doing the video
@@milsimjediThe Mandarake site based in Japan has one for slightly less than retail. May work out cheaper than getting it from a UK retailer even with postage costs.

its going to seem "cheap" now after more fans become aware finally theres a Dai X kit then prices will rocket i mean how many fans have been curiously checking every year on the of chance they get lucky.

The best thing about 80’s kids TV. Star Fleet!

And my sister had the theme tune on LP.

Starfleet was brilliant!! It was always great when the Dai-X made an appearance and annihilated everything in sight.

Hot soapy water and a toothbrush. Don't submerge them as they have springs inside. Cheers
