  • I'd often thought about reviewing my own Honda Fireblade CBR954rr after 2 years of owning her. What better time to do it than after 1 month riding a Honda VTR1000 SP1?.
How does it feel compared to the SP1? Is all the fuss and price hikes over an VTR worth it compared to the good value of a 954.
The 954 is said to be the "Fireblade to own" what with it being the last blade Tadao Baba (The father of the 954) worked on and the lightest Fireblade ever produced?
You might be surprised by just how the 954 feels in comparison.

I love mine, needs a bit of TLC at the moment but still a great all rounder.

I had one in blue, had to sell as could only ride for 20 mins due to arthritis in my neck, a fantastic bike and so light.

I’m surprised by that, I found the position to be quite upright compared to other sports bikes. Obviously not fully upright but more so for a sports bike than you’d expect.

I have a change on switching my VFR800 05 for a 02 954RR. The reason why I whould like to change my VFR is for 1 reason only. The fact that the VFR is just no reminding me of sitting on a bike at all times. I sat on a gsx-r1000 once and the at touring speeds I could hear the engine and on my VFR I dont have that. I just remind me on sitting in a car.....Windows closed XD. Would the 954 give me that feeling of sitting on a bike at all times?

954 is unfortunately not reliable. Cylinder walls get worn from a experimental coating they thought would reduce friction. But it unfortunately simply wears down and can't be easily fixed. Has to be re-coated. Don't buy unless you don't mind low compression and oil burner. Otherwise fun bike.

4 years in and bags of miles at stupid speeds and mine still lives at 33,000 miles.

That is so untrue, it's only gossip. 954 is one of the most reliable sportbike to this day. If it's maintained as it should be, it can go for miles and miles. If you negolect this peace of art and if you put in Shell Rotella 5w40 as many of them do, well than it can go wrong.

It happens from short skirt pistons, Most of them do 60k miles before seeing any cylinder issues, They can be resleeved in the uk and europe now
