Fact: driveshafts are designed to snap clean of at the driven end, this is to prevent damage from a spinning broken shaft otherwise. Damage would be far greater with a spinning loose end.
Nice to see a car repair on MCM. Going back to your roots. Don't get me wrong I love the series you guys produce, but always nice to see you guys come home now and again!
like Marty said those shafts are engineered to be the weakest link so it breaks instead of the gearbox, also is anyone else getting kids cartoons in the ‘up next’ section?
we all know the real reason. subaru wagons know when they're in a drag race against a much faster opponent, so they break themselves to avoid losing. this is the real reason why the guys chopped the roof off the subarute, so it wasn't wagon, and therefore wouldn't break.
Two shafts breaking makes sense - an open diff works by balancing the torque applied to both your half axles, and the axle shaft is limited by how much torque it can take Assuming they're both in about the same condition, they should snap at about the same time. That's actually a good sign that the parts aren't worn, and they're simply just too weak.
The problem is your on the upside down of the world guys, the mass of the earth is counter rotating against your wheels, you need to put left hand threads on your lug nuts. Also contrary to popular belief installing your tires with the directional arrow going the opposite direction will work better for you boys down under . Running the lowest octain you can find will help as well, c tain is calculated in the norther hemi ,so it is a inverse calculation nobody tells you guys.
Been watching you guys forever, love how you guys have stayed true to the content and not changed with success! Huge inspiration for us to make videos.
I was hoping I would see Marty using his crazy crawler while working underneath this car. Oh well, still a quality episode. Keep up the great work MCM!
The word Autopsy in the title probably got this demonetized. It seems when that happens the vid gets put in a low priority queue for processing. @16:59 "Nek minut" couldn't help but have a good chuckle. (Huge fan and stuck in hospital going through all the oldie goldie videos, keep up the top work lads!)
It’s hard to see from the video since we didn’t get a good close shot of the broken shafts, but often times a clean break that is flat across the breakage plane can indicate a fatigue failure. Just because a part has handled abuse before, doesn’t mean it won’t snap the next time. Starting fresh with new parts that you guys know the history of was a good idea! Thanks for the great video! I love where MCM came from, and I love where MCM has gone!
I have a global domestic market VW Passat.... and I live in Canada. I often call the dealer for parts pricing and laugh... and then I call Carquest.... and then I buy the part at Carquest... (or rock auto)... Subie parts ridiculously expensive at the dealer?

If I can't wait I'll feed a few part numbers (Dorman, AC Delco etc)to the local shops...and if the pricing (with trade discount) is close to the rock auto price, I grab it. Very seldom are local parts cheaper...... Oh. And #3.... Rock Auto price plus tax and shipping seems to be very close to trade price not retail....
Good video guys, I like how you are picking your battle and keeping the original CVD Shafts, something gotta break and it's better than a box. (Axel's for the Americans in the room).
to be honest.... after the 2nd driveshaft was replaced, i was hoping it would still not work, and needed another replaced... just for some more comedic value, and a longer MCM video
you guys never let me down! was just expecting/hoping for another driveshaft change including your casual ''sexual innnuendo'' talk when inserting certain objects in lubricated parts of the car.
Twice I've reduced 2nd gear into Christmas glitter... That makes for a not so fun day. Time to buy a lottery ticket though- that kind of break wasn't cheap, but was a lucky one compared to the alternative.
Oscar Thorpe - Right on! Good design should always include cheap, easily replaceable parts that fail before expensive, hard to replace parts get damaged. #fusablelink
Max Armfield Guitar Faacking odd place to hold your hat out, bud. I won't throw you any cash, but I did watch a couple of your vids & subscribe to your channel, for whatever that's worth

I've got an OBXT with a 5spd making around 350whp, and i'm so absolutely terrified of breaking something transmission-wise that i barely even get in it anymore. Props to you guys for not being afraid to wring Supergramps' neck a little when the time was necessary!
Hey guys, I love the show. I'm amazed that you sheared the axles on Super Gramps - I've seen Subaru CV axles blow the bearings before, and figured you'd done the same. Crazy! Glad it was cheap and easy and you're back on the road!
Fun fact about driveshafts: In the British Touring Car Championship in the 90s, Vauxhall (Holden) had a recurring problem with the Cavalier snapping its driveshafts regularly. In an attempt to diagnose the issue the team painted a line down the length of the shaft and found that after a standing start the shafts would have twisted a full 180 degrees! The result was a snapped shaft on the next, or close to next launch. The shafts were milled hollow for weight saving purposes, so rather than revert to solid shafts, the team simply changed both shafts after every race!
You should make the shop gloves have the back of the palm of the have all white as well as the thumb, index and middle fingers. That way when you successfully remove a stubborn part or finish a difficult built you can say and emote chopped to the part/car and it look like your chopped logo.
Probably blew because the track was too prepped. Car's trying to put that power to the wheels but the wheels are too gripped and don't wanna turn, so they twist and snap. That's how it usually happens.
Hey man I love what y’all are doing. I remember when I broke my cv shaft (that’s what we call it in America) when I moved from California to Texas. I was towing a trailer with my 2007 Honda Accord coupe (never doing that again) and it tried to send me hard right with the trailer and all of a sudden, it wouldn’t move at all. I had to leave it in Kingman, Arizona and keep going with a rental suv to Texas and I came back for it once I moved my stuff into my place (I had to return the suv to Arizona). My friend and I hauled ass all the way back to Kingman to fix the car. We picked up the car, dropped off the suv, and we limped the car right back to Texas. I ran across 3 time zones in 4 days (pacific, mountain, and central) and it was one hell of a ride. I would do it all over again in a hot second. Keep on rocking!!!
Creepers are good when you're going deep under the car (makes it easy to come back out quickly with less effort). No good when you have to lever something or push parts on because you just keep rolling away...
@@2litrepeter. Creepers with Brakes then might seem the obvious solution! Surprised, people employed in an engineering discipline, haven't yet incorporated such a simple refinement in the long history of the device?
Glad to know it's such a relatively easy fix, and not the engine or gearbox. It was heartbreaking to see it blow up, even more so after I finally got caught up on the Gramps saga over the last few days. Supergramps rides again!
Next video: "So when we checked if the wheels were spinning, we only checked one side... Turns out we snapped all 4. We do it all over again, on this episode of mighty car mods" ;)
This gave me the confidence to replace the snapped driveshaft on my Suyota (or Toybaru??).. Deffo beats getting getting towed to a garage..also great sense of achievement being able to mend stuff in the driveway.. Thanks McM...

Too much power and a nice sticky track is what breaks axles. There are all sorts of experiments you can do to manage the problem. Every time I take my Jetta(VR6 turbo) to the track, I break an axle. My problem is wheel hop, 18 inch wheels with low profile breaks axles, 17's with drag radials breaks axles....... But, like Marty said, you make the axle strong enough, something else, usually way more expensive, breaks. I'll take a broken axle any day.
Yeah, it occurs to me that I made the mistake in my comment of assuming that F (the radial force) would remain the same. Of course you could make it softer on the axles by changing that force, ie playing with the static friction between tyre and road surface :-)
I’ve done hundreds if not thousands of these and still watched the whole thing.... fyi Usually I spray a towel with brake clean and wipe those rotors down to keep the greasy finger prints from contaminating the pads. Great video, always enjoy hanging out at the mcm garage. (Hoist next? Maybe a sponsor deal???)
The fact that both the mini and supergramps need repairs is really a testament to how often these cars get used. I see cars built on other channels and I know they are never really used again.
One point guys. First off I love your show! Thanks for trucking on! When you started doing these shows you guys were vary good about explaining and showing how to fix and install parts. This time you did some explaining but there was a number of times that you were not showing what you were doing. Now knocking you too hard here. Just polity asking for better camera angles of the new parts going in. Looking forward to your next show!
Noticed you forgot to wipe the hand prints off your rotors before installing the wheels. The result of this mistake will be hot spots. Thanks you for continuing to make videos they are always entertaining.
The front shaft snapped at the inner joint, the rear shaft snapped at the outer joint. Breaking one front and one rear drive shaft on a 4-wheel drive car in one launch is impressive. Good on ya Marty...
1) You need to soften the hit from the clutch. If your RPM gets dragged down below your launch RPM you are creating a torque spike when the engine tries to recover and accelerate. 2) Street radials have very little give, drag radials have softer side walls and will cushion the violence of dropping the clutch on power manual trans car. Gramps can easily run 11's if you address these problems and not break anything in the process. Pre-load won't really save your drivetrain either. Some of the fastest AWD cars use what I said on Facebook.. look it up.
Love the show but what is the point of making creepers if you don't use them but leave them against the wall for viewers to see while you crawl around on the ground.
griller506 I was so nervous watching him under that car with no blocks in place as a safety precaution. Hydraulic's can fail on occasion under load, so can jack stands. I just couldn't do that without being a bit nervous.
Ignas V if a video is only jist uploaded UA-cam will take a while to process the footage meaning it can be stuck in 360p for a while. It's just because you came early that's all. It happens to everyone
Marty, I used to snug up the axle nut just like you for the longest time (without issue) until I discovered the axle nut pre-loads the wheel bearing. Good to see Gramps back in the game. I was laughing with Moog though, don’t think you will launch quite that hard next time.

Thank you guys!! Another great video 10 months ago
Here’s a video idea. How to change a clutch in a Mini Cooper
Which one? The new or the old one.
To all those watching in 360p cause your early, hello mcm fanatics
When you are early enough that the video is still 360p max.
lol...right!
Good on ya Marty...
what is this 360p D:
Question. Since you replaced two drive shafts now with new ones doesn't that mean you will be worried about the other two now?
Colin Campbell if he keeps launching it like that he probably will. If he drives normal it'll probably be fine.
3:20 am in my country... I guess I'm staying another 20 min awake... Lol 😂
Gian Groppa Racing everytime it bed time mcm pops up ugh... I wait for morning throne time instead
Some of the fastest AWD cars use what I said on Facebook.. look it up.
That's such a minor problem. I thought something went wrong with the engine. I'm happy gramps is still running!
Guess the NBN is playing up in Australia again so they can only upload potato qulity with in a good time
We no longer call it "internet" we call it "malcolm". You know its playing up when its working.
Love the show but what is the point of making creepers if you don't use them but leave them against the wall for viewers to see while you crawl around on the ground.
much more space... also work clothes..
griller506 I was so nervous watching him under that car with no blocks in place as a safety precaution. Hydraulic's can fail on occasion under load, so can jack stands. I just couldn't do that without being a bit nervous.
why is it only 360p????
Ignas V if a video is only jist uploaded UA-cam will take a while to process the footage meaning it can be stuck in 360p for a while. It's just because you came early that's all. It happens to everyone
"you came early that's all. It happens to everyone" I hope so because I've got a real issue with that
When it’s first uploaded it’ll be low quality for a little bit not long maybe like 20-40 mins after the video when live
15:26 Another good tip is to press the bolts through a piece of scrap cardboard in their relative position and draw a rough guide on the card.
Marty, I used to snug up the axle nut just like you for the longest time (without issue) until I discovered the axle nut pre-loads the wheel bearing.
Good to see Gramps back in the game. I was laughing with Moog though, don’t think you will launch quite that hard next time.
Anybody else getting the WEIRDEST suggested videos?
Tim cartoonnish...
Cartoonish.....
I am so early there is only 360 and 144p! Nice
gunlord97 still worth it!
47mins later and it's still 360p, nice!
You should try viewing video from the 70's.
Oh damn was about to go to bed BUT NOT NOW!!

+dr villiers Hey G, ever think maybe I live in a different time zone? Maybe even in a different part of the world?
Thanks guys, I had to play 6.55 twice what a connection you two have 👍👌
Never assume you found "the problem" when you find "a problem." LOL
This makes me want to mod my daughter's Subaru... So cool
