      They could make a multi purpose controller so it has a keyboard aswel just like with the normal controller where you can hook a typing pad lol then we can talk yes it will make the controller bigger but I had no isues when I had my 360" controller with touch pad makes typing quicker than scrolling the letters you want

    • @shanez1215
      @shanez1215 11 місяців тому +2

      @bigmeme2312 It's not quite better so much as it is different. Some games it's much better and some it's not as good.
      Anything where you move with a DPad is MUCH better on a traditional controller.
      But any MMO that uses WASD for movement and mouse is a lot better on this vs on the Series X. I just set mine up for Toontown and it's awesome.
      On the other hand I'm a huge fan of Halo and the SC is not well suited to it. Halo is more like classic games where you're mostly shooting from the hip in short to medium range. That means that you either need to have gyro always on or never. You also need to use the track pad for looking around which may not be quite as good, especially for platforming in minigames. Ironically the controller would be better for Halo for left handed players, as they can use the left stick to look around and a track pad to strafe but that may feel weird. The other problem with Halo and other MP shooters is that it locks you into only one input type, so you can't use a hybrid layout. This means you have to pick between analog movement and mouse-like aiming.

    • @wet0wl
      @wet0wl 5 місяців тому

      @@JT_vidsIt depends on what games you play. Certain games may help from the thumb stick but with shooters, having a touchpad and gyro is miles better.

    I watched this review on Vessel but my Steam Controller arrived since then and I must dislike this review..sorry. 1.) Controller doesent feel cheap at all. It feels exactly as Microsoft XBOX 360 controller. 2.) The gloss plastic is about as annoying as on the XBOX 360 controller .. so basicaly you wont even notice. It doesent come into contact with your hands. 3.) It is very comfortable to hold. 4.) This is supposed to be a review and you havent even mentioned Gyroscope or went deeper into how well you can customize it so this only makes it a impression not a review. 5.) Gyro (motion controlls) work supprisingly well and are almost as good as using mouse when you set it to work as a mouse.

    My impression: Started playing dark souls 3 with the steam controller. A small learning curve and I used the top community config. Got an xbox one controller halfway through the game. Tried it and was terribly unhappy - ran back to the steam controller. I think the Xbox controller is now my "guest" controller. The feel was better and the button placement, while unusual, eventually felt superior. Well done valve, I wasn't expecting to love this.

    • @dreigram
      @dreigram 6 років тому +15

      100% agree about Dark Souls 3, or any Dark Souls game for that matter. I own 2 of these controllers now and although there is a little bit of time invested in initial setup for a game, the superior controls are worth it. An important note is that if you bind 2 of your ABXY buttons to the paddle buttons, you can use those while simultaneously controlling camera with the right touchpad, a feat that is much more difficult (not impossible, but very awkward) with a normal controller.

    Having owned a steam controller for a year now, I absolutely love it. I do all of my gaming on a T. While I use a folding TV dinner table with an orbweaver and mouse for multi-player fps (mostly overwatch) , I use a steam controller for everything else, including single player fps.
    The gyroscope acting as a low dpi mouse is amazing for precision aiming when combined with the track pad at higher dpi settings. The gyro is also awesome for steering in driving games. The track pad is a joy to use for movement in shumps and fast paced platformers. One of my favorite configs is using dual track pads for The Binding of Issac: Rebirth, which makes the game feel incredibly fluid.
    I adore this controller and while it took some time to get used to it rather than an Xbox controller, it is absolutely worth it. The versatility of this thing is unmatched, and the play style it enables for some games makes it so much more fun to use than a standard Xbox controller.

    I have a steam controller and I can say that no, the material and production quality is exactly the same as any other xbox controller. Yes, the glossy plastic sucks but that's an aesthetic issue not a quality issue. I love the steam controller and have since disposed of my old xbox controller as atleast in my opinion it is with some very few exceptions superior to it. Playing Dark Souls with it felt like cheating and made using ranged combat with manual aim much more enjoyable because it gives your shots a lot more precision. I could write more about it but others have already said it: The steam controller is great and i love it a big deal. IT DOESNT FEEL CHEAP!

      I agree! Maybe the controller back in late 2015 was an earlier revision? I bought mine with the DOOM bundle recently and love it! The controller has a quality feel to it and even the packaging that it came in is really nice. I can play every game in my library with the controller even really old DOS emulated games! I think the versatility of this controller to control a PC as a mouse and keyboard is where it really shines.

    I actually love this controller. I often use it more than a mouse an keyboard for games that in my opinion, suck with mouse and keyboard (Warframe for example). Xinput controllers actually suck in comparison to this, but then again, this is my take on it...

    • @Agret
      @Agret 5 років тому +1

      Warframe is a bad example because of the extremely fast movement in the game you are constantly moving your aim and need to have precision shots on tons of moving targets so the mouse/keyboard is a million times better for this sort of game than a controller unless you are playing the early parts of the game where everything is trivially easy.

    • @0verride881

      @@Agret Little late reply, but gyro on the steam controller addresses your aim concern completely. Not to mention, the standard crouch + jump + double jump + slide combo can all be done by pressing and moving your thumb a little bit on the haptic pad, or the joystick, or whichever... Wherever you like really since the steam controller lets you decide for yourself what you wanna do and how c:
      The only point I would concede would be hacking the later level corpus terminals. I still prefer my mouse to solve these. That being said, I think that is mostly due to me not caring enough to configure something on the controller to help with that myself.

  • @DustinRodriguez1_0

    I like my Steam controller. I even found that in the original Half Life I can actually do that stupid crouch-then-jump-but-don't-jump-while-still-crouched-but-just-after-but-not-too-long-after maneuver that you need once in the training level and then never again until you get to Xen where it will return to ruin your game. I've never finished the original Half Life because of that maneuver. I straight up couldn't do it reliably with keyboard and mouse and just gave up originally. But in testing out the controller I hopped back into Half Life and was able to do everything effortlessly. Quite nice. I haven't really tried it in many other FPS though, I just don't play those much. It's the only controller I've ever had with motion controls that actually WORKS which is kind of amazing. I still have no use for such controls, and the person who decided that a Project Cars mapping that does steering with those controls is clearly a crazy person, but it would be entirely usable if you wanted to do something like that because you too are a crazy person. (I use a racing wheel but tried out the steam controller out of curiosity) Using the right trackpad as a mouse and right trigger as the mouse click button is great, especially when you realize you don't have to fully depress the trigger fully to click, just get it to its haptic activation point. That is extremely nice.
    My only complaint about it is that I don't think I would like it at all for anything which tries to use the left pad as an actual D-pad like emulators for classic games. I haven't actually tried it, and the left pad is fine for things that use it like the d-pad on the 360 controller is usually used (basically just a set of 4 more buttons) but I can't imagine it being very nice for using it as a 'true' d-pad. Might have to try that sometime.

    Even as better as this review is vs other reviews, i think you're STILL not giving this thing enough credit. 1) Literally the glossy plastic is the ONLY place it feels cheap. And thats just an aesthetic choice. The plastic is very light and rigid which work great for a controller without making it heavy. I know we all associate heavy with expensive like the guy who got killed by the t-rex in jurrassic park, but this isn't the case. 2) Did you say a normal controller is better for driving games? Lmao. Another reviewer who despite actually TRYING with this review, completely left out the gyroscope. This this is so much better for driving games than most. 3) I use this thing as my daily driver now, even AT my desktop. Many games work better with controller because their keyboard bindings suck, and this is the first controller to truly mix keyboard input with directx input. 4) I aim better with this in first person shooters than i do with a regular game pad, and SOME are even doing as well as keyboard users. No joke. Also no mention of phase shifting? Or the back pads and their usage? I still can't help but feel you phoned this one in

    • @boolean5162
      @boolean5162 6 років тому +8

      Of course you aim better on a Steam controller than with other pads, that isn't the point. Pads are utter garbage for aiming in an FPS, there's a reason console COD has aim assist. Look up 360 controller challenge on youtube, it should be joke vids of PC FPS players getting bopped for using one. Steam controller is basically unusable IMO for serious FPS play, and difficult to use but leagues ahead of a 360 pad in casual FPS play; I say this as an owner and massive fan of the Steam controller. What it can't do, it really just can't do. Fighting games? Forget it. Quake? Don't bother.
      On the other hand, I almost refuse to play Civ without my steam controller. The hotkeys are placed so comfortably and intuitively that I refuse to learn them on a keyboard. It's just sooooo good for games where you need a cursor but appreciate an analog stick such as top-down or sidescroller games with cursor inventories that you just can't go back once you've used it. Plus, wireless with AA's is amazing because it lasts forever and you can use rechargeable batteries. Definitely worth picking up, but only after you have a good keyboard, mouse, and potentially a different pad, depending on your preferred games. My opinion, anyway

    • @jamesoren7238
      @jamesoren7238 6 років тому +1

      I find it pretty much spot on. A year later, (got mine black friday last year) and this is exactly how I use mine. It's not replaced my XB1 controller at all, nor my keyboard/mouse at all - both of them are better at their specific tasks, but I do use this on the sofa, sometimes with my laptop (so much easier to take this in my laptop bag than taking an external keyboard when gaming on the go.
      I have tried to use it in place of my XB1 controller for the games I use that for, in particularly sim games, being very customizeable helped in some areas, but the XB1 controller is also fully supported. I dunno... you could use it just fine if you didn't already have a fully supported controller, but I wouldn't buy it specifically to replace the controller you have now.
      Shooters are interesting. I'm one of those people that actually don't think that a mouse and keyboard is the best possible control for them. Personally I think the mouse part works really well and the keyboard part really sucks - we just all learn to do it. So I find that when I want to play online or otherwise want to do really well, I'll use mouse and keyboard, but that when I just want to have fun, I use a controller for shooters. Moving around is easier, accuracy is way down. The steam controller is right in the middle of those two. At first I was freakin terrible with it and didn't really use it for a few months, but now, I'm pretty good (playing overwatch on my laptop on a work trip helped). It's not as accurate of course as a mouse player, but it's a lot more comfortable and easier to move with than the keyboard. It's a good middle ground where you can play comfortably and have fun and not suck as much, but it does miss some magic of a controller even here.
      Basically, yeah, it's an enabler for me as they say in the video. I do like that it lets me play Civ V and co without the keyboard, but I'd never ever use it over the keyboard if it were practical - for example I was away at PAX a few weeks ago and came back to my hotel room late and not wanting to play any more shooters, but thought I'd do a quick round on Civ, I had the steam controller, but didn't even consider not using my laptop keyboard, even if the steam controller allows a more comfortable seating position after a long day.

    Being an avid couch PC user, it took me awhile, but I eventually learned to configure my steam controller to do damn near everything. I have an absolutely amazing desktop configuration to run the whole dang PC. I thoroughly enjoy making my own controls on every new game I play. Being able to customize your controls so deeply on every game makes old games feel like new. Not to mention games that aren't made for controllers, those are the most fun to configure. As time goes on, I've grown to love my steam controller more and more. It gets better with age.

    sold my csgo knife for it. totally worth it, even if it costs twice as much as an xbox one controller ( Poland, prices strange, yeah) i used the haptic + gyro cs go binding. works gr8. i love to use it as a remote for my pc. oh, and this glossy plastic looks cool in my opinion and why i used it since it got delivered ( 2 days actually) it does not get any fongerprints on it, i guess it is because the glossy parts are in the areas that the hand does not touch. the analog is the worst part, but it worls very similiar to the ps3 one.

    It took a while but I really like mine now. One of the set ups for Dark Souls 3 utilises the paddles in a way that means you can run while using the camera, or keep moving while using and switching items. After that I knew playing it on a normal controller would never feel as natural. Any game that requires a lot of aiming often feels clunky but I haven't found myself missing the Xbox 360 controller, or wanting to go to M+KB so I'd say it's a success for me.
    Rechargable batteries would be nice to see in future but I'm still using the duracells they supply with it after about 2 months of use.

    I really hope valve makes another steam controller based off of the steam deck controller. I'm not sure how they would make that work but I think they could do it. Maybe they could significantly decrease the size of the trackpads requiring multiple swipes just to get across the screen but small enough to fit on a standard size controller. It's not like your gonna be using them that much when connected to a TV. Or at least I wouldn't assume you would.

    • @aboveaveragebayleaf9216
      @aboveaveragebayleaf9216 10 місяців тому

      Many people actually do, they work excellently when set up right. Especially in conjunction with gyroscope. You can also make binds on the track pads that make it so you really almost never have to move your thumbs off them. Ramblecan has some good videos showing some of his configurations. Generally what I do for shooters at least is high sensitivity track pad with a little track ball mode, and gyroscope for most of the actual aiming. Then I use rt soft pull for gyro dampening/full pull for fire, so I have two different gyro sensitivities. One for close range, and one for long. If anything I'd love if they doubled down on the track pads, or made the controller modular so you can choose between as second joystick, or a larger pad.

    I been using it for a year and where it fails miserably is on the L1 R1 triggers and the touch pad clicks. They are slow, loud and unresponsive to a fast clicking, something i cant understand. Should it have this solved in a ps4-feeling way, it would be the gamepad killer.

    I've used the steam controller for a while now and I use it over my Xbox One controller for everything. I've used the controller for a long time on Doom (where I average about the same/slightly better than I do with mouse/keyboard) and I've used it on abstract games like Hearts of Iron 4 and I tried it once on Planet Coaster. It doesn't work for every game. But I found that it works with pretty much any FPS game (Quake Champions for example) way better than an Xbox Controller, and is diverse enough to work with strat games.
    And yes. I used it at my desk.

    a. I Think the glossy top looks fine, great as a matter of fact.
    b. Does not feel cheap at all. PS3 controller feels cheap, not this one.
    c. Price tag is cheap? Wait a second, maybe this is just my country, but this controller is higher priced than both PS4 and XBONE controller, not to mention basically every other controller except perhaps Wii U main controller.

      Furry Enchilada
      Much more fluid and intuitive. In desktop mode the right touchpad works as a mouse, the left as the scroll wheel. The trigger buttons work as mouse buttons and if Steam is running in Big Picture mode in the background, you can click the left analog to call up an onscreen keyboard, although it isnt easy typing with a controller.

  • @Acheron538
    @Acheron538 7 років тому

    I don't even use the mouse for gaming anymore. I sometimes find myself using strictly mouse applications with the gyro control alone after closing games because I find it to be so intuitive and comfortable.
    The gyro control was the game changer with me - I can see myself breathing in the game, even and have to hold my breath to snipe. I use it as a surrogate steering wheel which is accurate enough for driving simulators.
    I honestly don't think I could go back to WSAD and mouse or the Xbox gamepad.

  • @JulienCZ

    I have found amazing use from the SC in conjunction with a Microsoft Surface 3 (4gig ram) This comes in at the same price as an iPad but allows me to play most of my steam games during my hour long commute to work, or when traveling between cities. I tend to also carry around a DS4, so depending on the game one feels better than the other. What's great about the SC for me, is that it has effectively "unlocked" the ability to play many games what might have otherwise required a mouse and keyboard either due to their nature, or because they never got controller support on pc (either from age (jedi Knight games), or laziness (lookin' at you Mass Effect) Knowing that I am abusing a dainty little A7 chip, i have been more than happy playing "full" games on the go, waiting at the bus station, or on the train between 24-60 fps. Things like Heroes of might and magic, Assassins creed Rogue, the lego games, Halflife 2, portal, Deus Ex HR, Mass effect, Guild wars 2, and more all work great on the go with this combination.

  • @DoomRater
    @DoomRater 7 років тому +3

    Coming back to the Steam Controller after having had a chance to use it myself, I quickly found it cumbersome considering that it only seems to work well with Big Picture. That right there is its biggest downfall. Being unable to use the majority of its customization outside of Big Picture really hurts the viability of the controller to suit my needs. Not to mention, the controller's buggy keyboard and even buggier overlay even when IN Big Picture mode completely killed it for me. I'm waiting to see if anyone puts out usable, universal drivers that don't require Steam at all to make better use of it. Getting that overlay to properly work regardless of game though would be a step in the right direction- while I'll never assume I'll type anywhere near as fast as I can with Google keyboard's swiping, it certainly would help if things like pad buttons worked the way they described, where I could get 16 buttons on a single pad and choose them easily from the pop up overlay. It would solve so many problems where I just don't have enough inputs on the controller or don't need all the inputs to be right there on the front panel, but I don't have a spare button for shifting functions elsewhere. Also, when it crashed while in the middle of using Second Life, the number one application that could have benefited from the Steam Controller to me, it crashed hard- and likely due to the media controls being used within (or maybe just because Second Life is a video RAM memory hog, take your pick).

    • @DoomRater
      @DoomRater 7 років тому

      Ian Morris My games of choice are modded Minecraft (extra buttons make all the difference there) and exploring Second Life with the Firestorm Viewer. I also don't really enjoy turn based strategies but agree on TF2's benefit to a controller that can take advantage of a gyro for enhanced aiming.

    • @DoomRater
      @DoomRater 7 років тому

      Ian Morris Please read what I actually said before saying everything I already agree with. The controller's drivers crashed Steam while I tried to use it. I could not use several features OUTSIDE of Big Picture mode. These are the issues that caused it to go back in the box for me, not the steep learning curve. If anything i was more then happy to put time into using it as a potential keyboard and mouse replacement, but when I can't reliably trigger important keystrokes unless I run the device in Big Picture mode, that's a problem.

    • @Mikyate
      @Mikyate 7 років тому

    The controller is not terrible, this 'review' is. This is the first LinusTechTips video that I have downvoted. He didn't even cover the use of the gyro and how it makes playing shooters almost (notice I said almost) like playing with a mouse and keyboard. The controller does not feel cheap and comparing it with the build quality of a 150 usd controller is stupid.
    The only thing I will agree on is the use of glossy plastic, I can't believe there are still electronics in 2015 that use it. Other than that...Thumbs down (to this video).
