Hats off to Valve for letting you have so much freedom to do your thing. I learnt way more from this video than anything I’ve seen about the Steam Deck prior.
Finally, 1.4 Terraria on console.
didnt expect to see you here
Hello Terraria enthusiasts
@@bromomento3862 mine arrives in December so I’ll actually be doing a video showing some portable modded Terraria
IM GONNA PLAY TERRARIA ON IT CHIPPY I LOVE YOUUUU
Shoutout to valve for actually allowing Linus to bring and use all his gear. Feel like most demos are a tailored experience.
To nitpick, he wasn't able to test his controllers but I assume it's because they were strapped for time. I will say, since Steam already supports those it's redundant to even try them
@@nikkoa.3639 you right. and pretty much all controllers work out of the box on linux already
@@nikkoa.3639 Not only does steam support them, but support for them is baked into the linux kernel. Honestly of all the tests to run out of time for this is a pretty good one since it's basically guaranteed that they'll work anyway.
@@nikkoa.3639 and it's running Linux so most controllers will work
@@queueue_ Thats probably the reason why Linus saved for the end, since it wasn't a necessary test anyways
The freedom Valve gave you with their product shows their confidence
@Milos TV It was mainly to say you COULD easily do it but absolutely shouldn't
@@wesleyzimmerman94 but the fact that this is a Linux operating system and they let you go to the desktop is just so cool
The thing I found most interesting in this video is the fact that even though this was nowhere near ready to be shipped, it's still functioned just fine with these weird edge cases that as far as I can tell, a lot of companies don't even think about a year after their product launched.
Nintendo saw this and was like "okay fiiine we'll turn on the Bluetooth."
Its actually kind of infuriating that after years of them saying no to bluetooth audio, they're randomly just like "oh yeah its on now." Like why couldn't you just do this 4 years ago??
@@brittig8983 the fact it always had Bluetooth capability too but they just didn’t turn it on 😭 so bizarre
I had no idea. According to a Google search it comes with some major limitations, though? Audio lag and only able to connect two controllers.
@@Jmvars yeah the lag and jittering can be otherworldly (for me at least), probably why they refrained from turning it on all these years 🤣
@@er_cl Yeah I figured there's probably a reason it wasn't on in the first place. I guess they figured if people want laggy audio they can have laggy audio.
Valve Management: "We need to test this. Put it through it's paces."
Scott (probably): "Why not just host a press day, and invite Linus Sebastian from Linus Media Group over to play with the device. If we're lucky, he might even drop the unit."
Valve Management: "Make it so."
,but HE DIDNT!
Perfect Ergonomics!
@@somethingsomethingsomethingdar WHAT IS THIS WIZARDRY
I'd throw Let's game it out and The spiffing Brit into the mix for total annihilation
Then auction the dropped steam deck
Lol Scott: everything will be easy
This kind of format, just letting Linus come in and do his thing (other than taking it apart) shows that Valve really has confidence in this thing. They really just said, "have at it"
as much info he's giving I wouldn't be surprised if "someone" is taking notes for valve to do final tweaks if the retail version gets a bigger vent we know why lol.
Maybe don't let him "do his thing" completely. Because that package includes atleast one dropped product.
and then his constructive criticism on it, like with the intake, he cares about this thing, he really fucking wants one
Another Valve shill. Disgusting. This thing is clearly a bust and won't make it far in its niche market. Imagine being excited for lackluster integrated graphics. An Nvidia 1060 laptop from, like, 5 years ago is still a better deal. Imagine being excited about plopping down $400 for 64GB. YIKES!
@@MichaelDoesLife Some of us have small hands and can't maneuver a laptop like a handheld device.
The steam deck has better specs than my desktop PC..
Same here lol

Same and the base model is cheaper than my laptop too
It's painful man, I can't even play witcher 3 in my laptop and he's holding it in his hand
Yes, pretty sure my computer can't play doom that good tho
After owning the Steam Deck for a couple months at this point and comparing it to my Odin Pro and Switch OLED, it’s amazing to see that Valve not only delivered on everything they promised, but actually surpassed expectations and completely blowing the handheld PC market wide open.
This is how you do a product launch. With transparency. It's such an underrated marketing strategy most of the time, but the best aspect of it is it also sets realistic (or as realistic as you can get) expectations for the product, so people can have a good idea of what they're going to get.
definitely, and on a handheld gaming console its never gonna be as noticable in person as it is on paper. a lot of esports pros even reduce their res to get extra fps. CSGO 720P STRETCHED RES BABYYYYY
Well put.
STEAM Deck is an actual a PC on a mobile- feel and just like a PC I can use import all my games that is non-STEAM based and I hope Valve would actually work with GOG on this one as well. CDProjekt better work with Valve on STEAM Deck because it will also help their market since half of their market are also using STEAM. So it's no brainer to work with Valve when half of your market is also using STEAM to capture more customers.
EDIT
Game-Developers who are low-funded like me would definitely want GOG to push forward on working with Valve on a cross platform.
----
Give us STEAM and GOG cross platform on STEAM Deck as well this will allow us DRM and DRM-Free crowd to do what we want to keep our games.
Wich is weird for valve at least for their games like TF2 or CSGO
so who are you sniping against? Nintendo is the king.
This feels like classic LTT (rushed, non-scripted, experimental and free handed, O and Ed holding the camera!), I absolutely love it!
So much this.

I know he said when he made suggestions, "You don't care", oh, they do care Linus, that's why you're there.
More kudos for Linus himself for not dropping it lmfao
I mean they already have sold so many of these devices. It really doesn’t matter how much access they give. I am waiting to find out if the nVME is going to upgradable before I preorder one. Doesn’t seem worth it to rely on an SD card for data saving especially for games.
@@mrthesquid the sd card is sufficient. But i get what your gettin at. An if you want to know.... its a 2230 m key ssd

I agree a small display doesn't need high resolution, i rather have good performance and especially a nice looking display with good color displaying.
I mean, sometimes UA-cam plays videos in 360p on my phone and I don't even notice right away. Much better to focus on performance for a game console rather than cramming a higher resolution you'll barely notice.
@@benm3382 exactly, Also had a 2k smartphone but you only noticed the resolution in VR otherwise it was just a waste to have such a high resolution screen.
I als once had a 360 or 480 p tv which used a cathode ray (old tv) that screen had a certain amount of leaking in between pixels and a effect like a static mist over the display. Resolution was terrible, but it made all games look great because it made you ise yohr umagination to improve the graphics. Due to the leaking and static mist you also did not see pixels at all and it looked better than a 2k tv(in gaming, not in reading or photo edit ting or such)
There should be a more expensive OLED option though, it's the only thing that makes me still consider a Switch instead.
@@AVerySillySausage im pretty sire there will be oled screen mods

First time I might actually invest in a handheld gaming device - My housemate and his partner often around the house playing their switches and I've sat envious docked to my desk, but too broke to buy a console that requires me to re-buy all my games. Funny seeing you use the FLIR. I have one at work as I’m a regulatory engineer for a large electronics company. We have to run thermal component temperature tests for UL. I wonder if Valve does something similar. Judging from what you caught under 60c on a micro under full load is pretty damn good for such a compact device.

LTT is the best tech channel!
Luke had some very logical input on why the screen resolution should've been bigger in one of the WAN Shows from a few weeks ago, but yeah Linus really convinced me in this vid that Valve made the right choice here. A small screen like that still looks plenty sharp enough for high motion gameplay at 720p-ish resolutions with the benefit of also not stressing the hardware out like 1080p would, so you have some flexibility on settings vs framerate as opposed to trying to make everything work at 1080p and just hoping you can get the settings just right to at least be able to hit 30 FPS.
@@j5689 Plus compare to the Switch which runs games worse at the same res despite those games being specifically made for that hardware. Switch's chip is just too old at this point. The most exciting thing about this is how I already own 150+ games for it. 125 of which I’ve never played. Because… sales. I’d be a fool not to buy a game for $7. Even if I never play it.
I don't remember how I approached Steam summer sale but on the Playstation 4 I have regularly bought a game when it was at 90% discount. I ended up having bought games I hadn't looked at for longer than 1 second having no idea what games I had in my library. Part of the fun is though the surprise when I go through my library and the excitement of: What will be on sale this time at 90% what I will buy. Well: I stopped doing that but I had great fun taking this approach to shopping for games during a period of 1 to 2 months.
Update: I definitely remember how I approaches Steam summer sale. Completely different from Playstation 4 store. I was looking to buy every game which had a review score of overwhelmingly positive irregardless of price during Steam summer sale. That resulted in a great library of mostly Indie games in the particular year in the past when I did that. Playing around with shopping can be great fun.

It not a review
@Krazy Kommando “Looks great” is Valve paying you to say this? This looks like something you’d see off Wish or Amazon.
honestly, the most attractive feature of the steam deck for me is already having a comprehensive library of all my favourite games. the experience of buying a console (the switch for me) is always soured by those first few weeks with very few games and little reason to play it over your pc
That's kind of your own fault for not buying more games when you buy a console (the switch for you) though? I have like 300 games in my Steam Library, but most of them are total garbage. I actually play two of them, Civ 6 and PuBG. This handheld would be absolutely awful to play Civ6 on, and you might be able to get PuBG to work on it, but the framerate would be low and graphics settings would need to go to low / medium. Even still the controls on the Steam Deck are awful for FPS games, so I can't see myself playing PuBG on it... Whereas on the Switch I have Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Mario Odyssey and Zelda BOTW, four great games which work really well on handheld / joypad controls. I think the biggest issue the Cleveland Steamer has is that most PC games are not in any way set up for Joypad control. Those that are, are usually low-budget indie platformers which are just... meh.
@@OneThousand98 Switch games are actually a trash garbage.
@@OneThousand98 i suggest you dont buy it buddy. also, having 2 games you like out of 300 suggests you are abhorrent at buying games you like. id work on that

I'm definitely ordering the big boy bells and whistles model.
I was going to get a switch but the idea of bringing my steam library with me is way more appealing
Don't get a switch not worth it anymore
If you're gonna buy a switch buy the cheapest option, AKA the Switch lite. The other versions are not worth it, the technology doesn't justify the price point and unless you're a major Nintendo fan you'll have trouble finding many games to play apart from the launch titles like BOTW and Mario Odyssey.
