I have the same story. This album blew up right before 9/11, and we were sitting in the classroom watching on TV. This song was being played on some speakers by a guy in class at the time. Watching the smoke billowing out of the buildings was so surreal, as I was already affected by several tragedies that had occured prior. This whole album became the album of my generation.
It was so devistating to me because a school shooting happened in the same high-school a few years prior at Heritage Highshool. I was in boyscouts with the shooter, who was older than me by a few years. So I had a similar situation occur with Linkin Park while I was watching footage in middle school, as a guy I knew was shooting up the highschool. It was an extreme tragedy.
They literally made a documentary about our area. My childhood was rough because of a lot of things. My parents never understood why I was the way I was in highschool. I wasn't able to really explain it until I was an adult.
The Adventures of TNT your lady is woke af
IDK wtf them niggas saying the song just slaps!!!!! I fks with them
I think she instantly understood the song far more than you ever did.
yes she did!
Yeah.... I think she is very spiritual.. which is very nice!! She gets it...
metal is a thug’s game played by gentlemen and RnB is a gentleman’s game played by thugs...
She is a very intuitive and brilliant woman.
ReklawLah she is woke af
I love that she knew what the “why have you forsaken me” verse was.
Not really, that was last words of JC on the cross... so was "Father into your hands i commit my spirit". And so was "It is finished" (depends which gospel you choose). So which one was it? xD I believe, one said son, one father and last the HG.
@@gregoriikatastrov7472 that's what I thought too...Jesus was at peace before the night of his crucifixion.
yeah man, she gets it for real
Guy: Bobbing head along, mouthing the odd sentence here and there, smiling because the song just ROCKS!
Girl: Deep into the lyrics, really listening and getting the message.
Hahhahahahahaha... This is definitely our style of reacting! If you watch our other videos my wife pays attention to the lyrics and the message of these songs while I just jam to the beat .
@@TheAdventuresofTNT Yeah but to be fair you're only getting into it more than her because it's not your first time hearing it meaning you already have a love for how the song goes plus you are already familiar with it meaning you don't need to pay as much attention to it.
@@TheAdventuresofTNT Yeah but this song ROCKS and text isnt important.First beat and then text 😉😉
Also I believe every member from SOAD is Armenian though they were born in the U.S.. Their families had escaped the Armenian genocide, an atrocity that to this day the Turkish government refuses to acknowledge as a genocide while the rest of the world does. Many of their songs touch on this topic.
Their song Holy Mountains always comes to mind when I think of the genocide, which I also recommend you give a listen to.
Daron is the only member born stateside.
Pretty sure Serj lives in New Zealand since a while back.
Serj and Daron are American born. John is Lebanese and Shavo is Armenian born, from Yerevan.
Gustavo Francisco Shavo was born in Soviet Armenia I think
Not only does the Turkish government deny it but many others do as well, such as TYT.
She is so analytical you chose wisely
Seeing your girls thoughtful expression. She grasped the emotional turmoil and pain behind the song rather than just the energetic, awesome music that excites most.
They are all Armenian Americans, so they would have been raised Christian because Armenia was the first official Christian country in the world. YES please react to the FIRST SOAD album, really any of the songs. It's my favorite album of all time.
They’re Armenian-American Eastern Orthodox. Yeah there’s a lot of religious references in their stuff.
It's hard to go over Serj's mad vocals, but pay attention - John's drums and Shavo's bass line are on point. It would not have been SOAD without them.
The beauty of heavy rock/metal is that the energy is also a filter, just not in a sad way. The lyrics are really strong and it’s very VERY deep.
I just KNEW that her face would get more serious in the "why have you forsaken me" bit. Such a good part. Always gets to me, and I'm not even really religious.
loved the reaction as well as the fact as she notished the lyrics.subbed for more soad
Thrilled u r doing this song. It definitely hits hard almost right off the bat. And the breakdown is so perfect and beeauuuutiful!! Nice job sharing a masterpiece.
Love how you went right into Pogo at the end, haha!
Only fans will catch that
I love your reaction, man!!! first-rate!!! all the best
I saw them in concert, 2 weeks before toxicity came out, great song
Hahahahaha she had a dead ass look to her face he had a big smile the whole time. Lol he knows what he just heard lol. Niice
Not only are you guys great reactionists, you're also a stunningly. Beautiful couple!!👍😊
Both of them appreciated the song a lot, but in very different ways. And I had to laugh, because watching him bopping and moving to it while she stares straight ahead reminded me of the time I showed this song to my mom. (Difference is, my mom was just wishing for the noise to stop and/or death, whichever came first)
If we analyze the Title "Chop suey" if we know the dish itself, it is a mixture of vegetables, meat, seafood especially squid and shrimp and species, and sometimes fishball is put in there and cornstarch as stew thickener. The song's transition in melodies and the lyrics are all mixed up.
The band members are Armenian, and some of their grandparents fled from the Armenian genocide to America. I request Soad - Forest or Aerials
Never happened.
@@yasinzeydulusoy have u ever heard of the armenian genocide...
@@lardinal2413 If he didn't, he wouldn't say that it never happened.
@@joaquincassagnetezcurra5875 u just made me have a big brain moment
Instant classic. I graduated in 05, and u member BYOB being massive.
I graduated in 01 too...and was definitely rocking this album heavy then
Thank you for the video, it was good stuff
Your wife face compared to yours is so funny. I do think the writer of the lyrics has deeper meaning than just song. I felt it ment about war or politics. I felt this group dealt with social issues.
No it isnt about war or politics. Its about a child who is abused by his/her parents and others.
Subbed, great reactors. More metal please! The dude's like "hell yeah, this is a great tune" and you can see his wife's emotions on her face going from "hey, this is fun" to "wait a sec, this shit's deep". Serj definitely went to a catholic school from what i know, idk if the rest of the band did. They're all armenians also. Here's a great suggestion: Jinjer - Pisces, a must-have if you plan on doing more rock and metal reactions (which I really hope you do).
SOAD Is an Armenian band from Glendale Ca .....This song originally was titled Suicide but they changed it to Chop Suey to be radio friendly
If you're asking what kind of guitar Daron is playing in the video, it's an Ibanez Iceman IC100. However, he said he used Gibson SGs and Les Pauls when recording the album. What you're hearing on top at that moment could be a mandolin (though playing it live he uses an electric guitar with a clean tone and sounds pretty close), since they do layer in traditional instruments like that. It gives their music a pretty distinct sound.
Iceman is a cool af axe. Wish I had one.
Serj is an amazing singer. Not all metal guys can do the sort of operatic thing without sounding like doofs....be he's amazingly talented.
being able to play the intro on the drums is so satisfying
I like that he's familiar with the album as a whole, the way he started singing "Bounce" when this one ended.
Never, not endevour to find a new point of view lovely couple. I appreciate you both. I like the ying and yang of opinions.
The song is called Chop Suey because it was originally called Suicide, but their record label wouldn’t let them name it that. I love this song so much!
Yea she felt that song. Good stuff. Yea very emotional.
Hell yea, when that album came out everyone had it, same with Eminem Marshall mathers lp
Lol.....EVERYONE had the Eminem album.
Since your girl doesn't seem to like the screaming metal maybe have her check out incubus, or rise against.
incubus is a must but I will FORCE her to like screaming metal. You will witness her transition on this channel. MUHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!
Bro y’all are chill as fuck, when the song ends I always sing bounce. Did it that same time you did 🤣🤣
*" I cry when Angels deserve to die "*
It would help a first listener knowing they’re Armenian and they write about they’re countries history sometimes
The angel they’re referring to is Jesus. They’re saying that, in some schools of thought, he deserved to die...BUT they have a point. It’s NOT an anti Christian, nor a demonic point. Just another take on the story, if you will. They’re calling what he did a “self-righteous suicide.” The idea being, because he knew he was the son of God, he behaved as if he were invincible. He made the assumption that God would not allow him to suffer, much less be murdered by human beings, but he was wrong. His choice to become a martyr, could be defined as being self-righteous. This is not a new theory or take on the story. It’s an opinion that some have, regarding the fact that, while on the cross, Jesus called out, “Father, why have you forsaken me?” i.e. “I know that you’re watching, how are you letting this happen to me?”
This clearly indicates that Jesus DID NOT know ahead of time what would happen to him. He certainly didn’t have any idea that he would be resurrected. He made the assumption that his father would surely intervene on his behalf, and not allow his own son to be so brutally murdered. He knew that by defying the Roman government, and refusing to confess to his “crimes” That he would be sentenced to death, thereby essentially causing his own death. That’s why they call it a “suicide.” It becomes “self righteous” The moment you consider that he thought the sentence would never come to pass. That changes everything. ***Would he have done what he did, KNOWING that it would result in his torture and execution???***
***It’s a big question to ponder, and a shocking question to ponder for some. That’s why it makes for great artistic lyrics. A good song should make you think.
started singing bounce right after too hahaha
0:15 "I dont know think its an asian dish" lol Buddy said that was the quickness and smoothly
This is sooo goood... you are so happy while listening to this and your wife is like "what the f***" is this? :D
first time seeing your channel. subscribed.
I heard this band for the first time at the same concert I saw Slipknit at for the first time. It was a bad day for first times. But I also saw Godsmack there for the first time, so it wasn't all bad.
Serj Tankian is the lead singers name and he’s actually not religious in your typical way. He doesn’t believe in organized religion. Funny enough, he believes in “the spirit that moves through all things” and that’s a lyric on the song science which is on the toxicity album
Lol I scrolled through the comments just to find u 😂😂
Silly Billy Gumdrops Ily 💚

A fact that nobody comments on this song is that Serj usually plays the piano or keyboards in the harmonies. in this song it sounds constantly and especially at the end. Despite being a tough sounding group, they used more instruments.✌🏻
She nailed it
My brother, you know how to rock. Keep on educating!
Man this is a hard song to explain to someone who didn’t listen to it when it came out in 2001. Damn good though
I never thought of this song in the context of 9/11. Changes the meaning totally.
This Cat truly loves Rock brothers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Awesome
An old one here.... Chop Suey is basically whatever you have in the fridge, you make it into a meal! Peace!
Brooo. She nailed the bible verse. Story goes he couldn't think of the break down, the lyrical 8th section while they were recording. Rick Rubin said lets take a break, they all went back to Ricks house. Rick told Serj to take a book from his library (which apparently is really big). Then he told him open it, then point to a line and that's what Serj did which just happened to be Luke 23:46 in the bible. Serj was blown away at how well it fit into the song and they rolled with it. It had nothing to do with the "original" version of the song. It just happened to fit in well with the "how people judge others deaths" vibe. Crazy how the world works sometimes :D
Crazy she pulled that out.
System Of A Down - Mind
Oh wow he started singing “Bounce” right after. He must be a big fan lol.
I was 9 years old when this came out and when 9/11 happened and I remember it so clearly because MHZ was the one station on my tv that wasn’t playing 9/11 news (they played music videos). This song got blacklisted from radio stations because of the line about “self righteous suicide” in light of the terrorist attacks. In reality though, I read that the band intended for this song to be about the hypocrisy of judging people for taking their own lives (condemning the act as self righteous) whereas if someone dies in a car accident, they don’t get judged. I believe Serj identifies as transcendentalist. Thanks for the vid! I enjoyed your guy’s commentary. More SOAD vids!
The lead singer from System of a Down was born in Lebanon and came to the United States with his families as a small child fleeing from Lebanon from my understanding chaos and war was going on at the time in Lebanon, I am not sure if I am correct. I have to do more research.
Armenian from Lebanon his grandparents were Armenian Genocide victims....survivors. See vanarmenya Serj
Originally titled "Suicide", but the record label didn't like it so it got chopped to suey.
I know this video is old but the look on her face is priceless! Like what the fuck you got me watchin!
I am so glad we are over this song! I've been blasting SOAD for years but after this reaction my wife became a fan and had been reciting the lyrics for months. Id wake up day in and out and she would be like " Angels deservvvvee tooooooo diiiiiiiiiieeee".......
The Lady is 'St8' On Point with her thoughts of the 'Crucifixion Of Christ' regarding the lyrics "Father, Why Have You Forsaken Me".. The additional striking verses are "Trust In My, Self Righteous Suicide", " I Cry When Angels Deserve To Die".. Almost has an air of 'Mocking' to it which is disconcerting to put it 'Lightly'...
He was Literally on the cross. Right before he died. Why why have you forsaken me.
A very deep meaning song from System of the Down , for me their top one.
Wish I could rediscover this stuff. You guys should do the band, Coheed and Cambria. The song Time consumer, it’s great. Love your videos.
Just subscribed! You guys seem like a nice couple. Do you react to any genre? Serj is Armenian.
You should react to Pantera- Walk
We react to anything out of our comfort zone. Im a huge metal fan, so I react to kpop. My wife is into hip hop and Rnb so I'm trying to get her into metal!!!! Lol! Look for pant era- walk soon! Nice thumbnail btw, I love the rattle snake!
Me encanta como el men vive la musica
Serj lives in New Zealand now. Seen him at subway the other day.
You're a real fan lmao, it was still burned in your head that Bounce was up next.
lol, hahaha....
that head looks magical dude
idk bruh's name but his fuckin' vibe is Life! lol i hella fuck with this reaction on behalf of his half of TNT lol!
More System:)
dude knows every word lol
New subscriber! First time seeing you guys and I loved this reaction! Can you react to Soundgarden “The Day I Tried To Live”?
Architects - Hereafter, a deep song about the passing of a loved one
try "Jinjer~Pisces".
When they made the song they wanted to call it Suicide, but they were not allowed so they "chopped" the word in half hence the name "chop-suey"
I love her reaction to “well his name is Serg” 😬
More SOAD please! Cigaro, Toxicity, Sugar, Boom, Prison Song, Aerials, War
This song was originally called Suicide. But the label wouldn't release the album. So they changed it to what it is now.
I don't listen to meta, but damn this song is amazing.
Curious if you're a Tool fan. Another "thinking man's" band. Would like to see you and your wife react to Tool - "The Pot" or "Right In Two". 🙂👍🏼
Yes, I love tool. I'm trying to pick a good first time listening for my wife.
Oh first time? Third Eye is a must. jk
Yes and also react to “Vicarious” lyrical video so you can really see the message. It’s an AMAZING song along with “The Pot” by Tool. 💕💯
Maybe not the best to review online, but turn your wife (and you if unfamiliar) onto Wings of Marie. Most touching song ive heard from Tool, and I've been a fan since 92.
I had read once the song was inspired by someone on a news or talk show saying an addict deserved to die . Ignoring the better angel in all of us .
They had to call it Chop Suey because their label wouldn't let them use the title Suicide, so Chop 'Suey' is a play on the word suicide.
Wow, all these years and i never knew that!!
YOU WANTED TO!
Check out some of Daron and Serjs solo work
I recommend Serj Tankian - Empty Walls ( the video if it's possible)
And Daron Scars on Broadway - Lives
Me and my wife listening to a song on the oldies hits station in the car:
Her: Oh, I love this song!
Me: Cool, do you know who this band is?
Her: No, I don't know who they are, but I like the song.
Me: Do you know who these artists are?
Her: No? But I like how they sing the song.
Me: Do you know what this song is about?
Her: No? I just like how they sing it.
Me: Did you listen to the lyrics?
Her: No? I couldn't understand what they were saying. I just like the song, and the music, you know the instruments and stuff.
Me: What instruments did you like the best?
Her: I don't know, the ones they played in the song.
Me: Ok honey, I'm glad you liked the song :)
SOAD - PLUCK
