This song is based off the book “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest”, about life inside an asylum. Many of the inmates were not actually sick, just different. But being in there made them believe they were indeed crazy. The book is about the struggle of one man to free himself and others from the physical and psychological prison.

That quote is especially clever, if one is aware of the fact that James's mother died because his family's religious beliefs did not allow for the intervention by modern medicine, but instead required prayer as treatment.

Agreed, although I stand by the studio version for a first-time listener. The studio version preserves the militaristic feel James has in the rhythm guitar parts and the angst heard/felt in his singing throughout the song.
I also prefer the drumbeat in the studio version. Combined with James’ sometimes bluesy guitar parts, Lars’ trip-hop beat in the studio version tends to buck the trends of metal albums released in the late 80’s.
Lastly, I think the studio version is more impactful (especially if you’re following along with the lyrics).
Everyone freaks out over the title track, Master of Puppets, which is no doubt a masterpiece, but my first love on this album is Welcome Home. It was like an anthem for my teenage years. ;)
same here. sanitarium is my favourite track on master of puppets, maybe even my favourite metaillca song. 🙂 i couldn't begin to count how many times i listened to this in junior high & high school. 🙂

Hip hop old head here. Been a Metallica fan since the late 80's. Give a listen to Outlaw Torn or No Leaf Clover from the S&M Concert. Both are awesome with the symphony backing them! Great reaction!!

One the best songs of all of metallca's arsenal. Everyone hated on load and reload. They are hard rock albums and should be consumed as such. Been a metallic junkie for 30+ years and it pissed me of at all the hate they got from black to magnetic. 'Shoot me again I ain't dead yet.'
This "sanitarium" is a metaphor for the society we live in.

Igor Tokarski I checked it out and that was very interesting. Thank you for providing that link. I don’t know how you feel, but I’m happy about the fact that they ultimately decide to divorce Sanitarium from the bass-driven sequence in the middle of Orion. I love both songs, but the waltz-like feel of Burton’s bass is better-suited to Orion (at least in my opinion).

Technically, a Sanitarium was for TB patients, Sanatoriums was for the insane.
It’s shocking how well this song (and album) holds up... a timeless sound.
Growing up in the 1980's, playing football in high school, this was must-music for weight training and workouts. In my hometown in 1986, you couldn't walk down the street without hearing someone blasting Master of Puppets...
This was my fave Metallica song as a child for a while. I was a cheery little fella.

Music gods!! I was one of those girls in the 80's that loved hairbands and then at 13 I was introduced to Metallica by a boy in my neighborhood that I was in love with. He was a skater punk and loved Kill em All. After that I became a true rocker. Metallica is my favorite band. You need to see them live, they are true rock gods live.

Very good reaction to an amazing song. That bit at the end with those guitar melodies (6:25 in this video) is one of my favorite moments in Metallicas' music, maybe after the clean part in 'To Live Is To Die' which I think you should react to next.

I was born 91.. I remember listening to Metallica at 11 my first album I listened to was ride the lightning (greatest album ever in my opinion) it was that album that spawned my admiration for metal. I’m 28 now still blasting Metallica in the car, have Metallica tattoos, I even make my kids listen to them 😂.

I keep seeing people requesting common Metallica songs. If you want raw, vintage find this song." The Prince ", react, or not but listen to it, It was supposed to be on the garage days album. I love how you describe James' lyrics as "painting a picture", you have a great ear for music. Nice job/reaction. I will say however, that the the albums 'Load and Reload' actually have some of James' best lyrics. Songs like 'Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn, Fixxxer' and others beyond the radio favorites from that era. The difference is definitely in the tempo/speed and aggression from the 80s stuff.

This song is inspired by one of the greatest movies ever “One flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. The movie won the big 5, Best Director Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Screenplay and Best Actress. Also, at the 1988 Monsters of Rock in Dallas, Metallica played Harvester of Sorrow for the first time and some friends and I were front row at the Cotton Bowl in July. Gatorade and water hoses kept us from the hospital that day. Many people went lol

Sanitariums were also places where hardcore alcoholics that were involved in minor crimes due to their addiction, were sent by local court judges to detoxify their bodies, and become sober again. My late sister's first husband was sent to one in our local area numerous times.

Dude, I went to go see Metallica in concert here in Nashville, I got way too drunk way too fast. That said, from the first song to the last, I was feeling the music in my soul. One, Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Hardwored to self Destruct, the played non stop for 5 hours. When I say I was recharged, to this day over 2 months later nothing can get me down.
