As a child and teenager, I would often use platform 4 at Monument then stay on the train as it turned at St James, because it just felt more convenient than waiting at Monument for the same train
Aye and you get a seat too
Surely, people will use Platform 4 at Monument to get off a train.
Good video : ) For next time you could do Newcastle (Mainline) Newcastle (Metro) (Northern to Heworth, Yellow line to South Shields, Ferry from South Shields to North Shields, take the Yellow line back again to Central metro.
Love the reaction when Northern decided to pull a Northern! Great Video and love the detour to Morpeth
@@RandomTFLupdates-PEPS_FOR_LIFE Hello
@@Sim0nTrains No Simon. Northern pulled a classic ‘Metrolink’
@@MrTransportAddict Metrolink pulls a Metrolink and Northern pulls a Northern
2 big towns with a decent population, Morpeth and Cramlington, getting a decent service to Newcastle. Except its often cancelled.
@@Nav1g8r1 Morpeth does have more services than Cramlington, CrossCountry Trains, LumO, LNER and TransPennine Express stop there as well.
Pointless journeys are always the funniest things 😂
Also how was the Northern 158?
@BriishTrainspotter did you know you can differentiate from which onea are ex Scotrail and which ones were direct to Northern?
Could you do Newark North Gate to Newark Castle as a pointless journey?
Here's a suggestion for a pointless journey: West Hampstead Thameslink - West Hampstead Overground - West Hampstead Underground
Seems like this opens up a lot of new ideas for these videos . Piccadily national rail to Metrolink?
Next time you are a bit more south, (South of London) you should do Edenbridge to Edenbridge Town. About a 5-10 min walk from eachother but a massive diversion by train. From Edenbridge to redhill, redhill to east croydon, east croydon to Edenbridge Town. Also both station have an hourly service so bear that in mind.
Would like to add two very similar West London ones: Hounslow Rail to Hounslow Central and Brentford to Boston Manor. In both cases the stations are linked by a very short bus ride, but if you were to want to do it by train only, it'd be taking the hounslow Loop via Whitton to Richmond, Richmond to Turnham Green, Turnham Green to Acton Town, and Acton Town to either Hounslow Central or Boston Manor.
There are other very similar ones like Feltham to Hatton Cross but none along these two lines are as awkward nor as close. Another fun one though is doing Hammersmith to Hammersmith whilst avoiding changing in a Zone 1 only station (I don't think it's possible to do this without entering zone 1 at all as you can't get to the H&C without an OSI on it's Western end)
5 hours when I did it last summer lol
Catford to Catford Bridge? Can't even buy a ticket between them!
West Hampstead (London Underground) to West Hampstead (Overground) to West Hampstead (Thameslink
)
I’ve never clicked a Nick Badley video as fast as this! Going to watch now!
same
you should do the Heathrow terminals
Edgware Road subsurface to the Bakerloo line would also be interesting
@Ro99 it's wouldn't be much of a route though as the lines are an interchange at Baker Street or Paddington (Kensington branch)
Bradford interchange to Bradford Forster Square
Northern should operate a electric service between Newcastle and Chathill & Berwick-upon-Tweed using Class 323 and Class 319 EMUs. With stops including Manors.
oooh no! that would be atrocious.
True. Plus it would cause more disruptions. Unless part of the ECML north of Newcastle was to be quadrupled which means the slower trains would use the slow tracks and the faster trains use the fast tracks.
That would be awesome! I've often wondered why they don't use electric traction for the Newcastle - Morpeth - Chathill - Berwick services. The only issue I can see at present, is that those trains have used the same (bay) platforms in Newcastle for about 30 years; and they're not electrified. I'm sure that could be overcome though. The 323 would be perfect for that route.
Great pointless journey Nick. I’ve never been to Morpeth or Sunderland!
Northern class 156s are a nightmare I hope they will get replaced with a fleet of class 158s.Also the Tyne and Wear metro is supposed to get new trains but they are on test still.
Manors has a much better service now as few years ago it only had a few a day as I think that only the Chathill service stopped there .Same with Blaydon and Dunston.I think that Teesside Airport is the most infrequently serviced north east station with one a week that's if you don't count BS Redcar which currently doesn't have a any trains stopping!
Windsor and Eton (Riverside) to Windsor and Eton (Central)... WER to Waterloo to Paddington to Slough to WEC
I'd have done a large loop, Manors - Newcastle - Darlington - Thornaby - Sunderland - Monument - Manors
btw u can get tyne and wear metro from newcastle central station the green and yellow line stop there also metros are every 20 minutes so u didnt just miss 1 also can u do sunderland station (metro) to sunderland station (nat rail)
"No one ever uses platform 4 at Monument"! Wanna bet? I've seen it crowded before!
Go on a football day, and you’ll find many supporters changing at Monument, off Metros from South Shields/South Hylton and also the North side of the loop, as its quicker than going all the way round the coast
on a football day its crowded
Wigan Wallgate to Wigan north western would be a great video!
You should do a London tube pointless journey on the circle line Edgware Road to Edgware Road
how does your ticketing work for this? you don't appear to buy any
I usually buy e-tickets on my phone, or in the case of non-National Rail Metro systems, I'll buy a paper ticket before I begin filming
Or sometimes I do have a camera shot of me pulling the ticket out of the machine 😁
Please try Smethwick Galton Bridge LL-Smethwick Galton Bridge HL
You should do Bicester north to Bicester Village that’s mega pointless haha
As my mother always said to me "Watch your Manor's" ;-)
There are generations of Geordies to this day, who accidentally miss-spell 'manners' as 'manors' because of that station/area 😄 (I was one for a while).
Could we get behind Catford to Catford Bridge, the journey so pointless that you can’t get a ticket for it?
Why don't you do Waterloo [south western] to Waterloo east[south eastern]
Highbury and Islington London Overground to Highbury and Islington Underground would be a cool video
Wigan Wallgate to Wigan North Western next! 😂
brilliant pointless journey im loving Morpeth & i love Monument station with its proper retro feel at that station and i love Manors station which is Tyne & Wears least used station and great for trainspotting keep up the awesome work
Yes, it's also quite staggering just how big Manors Metro Station is, considering there is absolutely nothing in Manors (anymore - there used to be a great cinema there 'til the early 80s) and no-one ever gets on or off there!
Great video nick
Blaenau Ffestiniog (National Rail) to Blaenau Ffestiniog (Ffestiniog Railway), via Shrewsbury, because who really wants to use that potentially 'dangerous' pedestrian level crossing when you can go on an adventure?
Looks like you had fun.
You just popped up on my feed for some reason? ..interesting concept!
But what struck me is, you're a Doppelganger for a bloke on another 'interesting concept' channel 'Christopher Collects'. Even down to the slightly cheesey incidental jazz muzak!
Next time, you could do Thorne North to Thorne South
Walkergate is OK. Just a mainly residential area with a Lidl and a bus depot. Not particularly dangerous.
It’s true, not many people get on
from Platform 4 at Monument, but it’s the busiest station on the Metro and is in Newcastle City Centre. Plenty people use Platform 4 when getting off.
I was born in Walkergate. Did I miss Nick mention Walkergate in this vid?! Never heard it mentioned.
Monument P4 is great when arriving from the coast, and IIRC can be used single line runnin in case of an issue in P3
Ayyyy Morpeth, that's where I live :)
Yes, watched a couple of your videos with that insane fake American accent you put on! A Morpeth lad trying to cover his accent. Huh! 😄
@@droge192 1. That's just how I normally sound. i am dead serious about that, I don't have a north east accent.
2. I am not a Lad lol
do Grimsby Town Platform 2 to Grimsby Town Platform 3 going all the way to London King Cross or St Pancreas then changing to the other one
Same station - doesn't count!
Some pointless journeys in Scotland ideas. I have 2 ideas the first is the between the two stations serving Glenrothes in Fife which are actually located in villages outside of Glenrothes. The two stations are Glenrothes with Thronton on the outer Fife Circle line (in the village of Thornton) to Markinch which is a station on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line. The second idea I have is between the two main stations in Coatbridge. Coatbridge Sunnyside (on the North Clyde Line) to Coatbridge Central (on the Motherwell to Cumbernauld Line).
I only ever visit Newcastle Upon Tyne once a year (for a certain running event) and used the Metro to Manors and thought I’d got off at the end of the world! 😂 I always find the St James bit of the Metro map confusing and which trains are going where on that bit? - if you see what I mean?
Tyne & Wear Metro is a "pretzel" (or figure of eight) configuration. So the Yellow line trains go through Monument twice; once on the north to south lines, then later on the east to west. St James is a terminus station (east to west only) and is 0.45 miles from Monument. Yes, basically it is confusing for visitors to the city!
How dare you get a nortnern 158 in tyne & wear! They're (quite) rare! Like once every few weeks on my route! (Well i go from sunderland to newcastle)
How about this one for pointless...
Bank (DLR to Stratford) to Bank (Central) to Waterloo (Waterloo &City) to Kennington (Northern) to Bank????🤔🤭
idea: hackney central > downs (probably via stratford and tottenham hale or something)
Joke ...
Sunderland
Really enjoying these pointless journeys so far, if I can offer up a few suggestions for future videos in the series:
Severn Beach to Pilning. About a 35 min walk between the two but the train journey is much longer and also made even more complicated by the fact that no trains towards Cardiff call at the station anymore. I think you have to go to Severn Tunnel Junction and then come back down the line again and even then the station only gets 2 trains a week (I know there's a local campaign group to get the station back on the map properly)
Upper Warlingham to Whyteleafe: It's a 3 minute walk between the two stations but the train journey involves having to go all the way up to South/East Croydon and then coming back down the other line again
Dorking (main) to Dorking Deepdene: Another short walk between two stations but on perpendicular lines. I think you have to go to Guildford and then get a train towards Leatherhead, make another change there and then come back down the line towards Horsham
Clock House to Beckenham Road Tram Stop: a 3 minute journey by foot but the train/tram journey is much more complicated. There are occasional train journeys from New Beckehnam to Beckehnam Junction but these are very limited, the easier thing to do would be to get a train down to Elmer's End and then change to the Tramlink services, changing over at Arena for a Beckehnam Junction tram.
Dorking to Deepdene is reasonably straightforward as far as pointless journeys go. Dorking to Horsham, Horsham to Gatwick, Gatwick to Deepdene.
I really enjoy your videos they're very diverting. I make train videos to also I have autism hence my interest.
From Newcastle you could have got a yellow line train round the coast amd into Manors from there, or alternatively, getting off the Mainline train at Heworth and jumped on the Yellow Line there
On 6:50min you say no one uses the platform, but in fact there are passengers getting off the Metro cars on platform 4, hence still have a puprose, even just to stand there and, make footage of it and post on a video hoping for success out of it. Anyway, thank you for sharing the interesting video.
Lol Really enjoyed that.
Altho you could’ve made it a lot shorter by going from Manors Metro, to Monument then change from platform 4 to P1 then head to Central Station and get Northern from there.
Still a really enjoyable video Nic.k. Thanks for a very entertaining few minutes.
How do you pay for all these train trips? Do you buy a ticket and scan on boarding? Fare inspectors come by asking for "Ticket! Ticket please!" ? That's the part you always leave out of your videos and it probably seems obvious to you, but as a fan of yours from Montréal, I actually have no idea how you go about it.
Can you do Glasgow Queen Street (Low Level) to Glasgow Queen Street or you could do Buchanan Street (SPT) to Glasgow Queen Street
liverpool central to liverpoll lime street
A suggestion of a pointless journey to do is Canterbury east to Canterbury West in kent. They have no good connection lol
King’s Cross St Pancras (Tube) - St Pancras (National Rail)
Said in a previous video, Monument to Monument platforms 1/2 to 3/4.
Others you could do but would cost a bit are some of the Scottish ones where the train splits.
I have got two pointless journeys for you. Sheffield Mainline Station to Sheffield Station tram stop. Meadowhall train station to Meadowhall tram stop.
I enjoyed this video, but I did notice your train back to Newcastle was scheduled to stop at Manors, so was the journey to Morpeth especially pointless?😂
As a local, the only unnecessary part was that he could have "reversed" (got off and got back on in the opposite direction) at Cramlington, which is the first stop after leaving Manors east/northbound. He stayed on a couple more stops to Morpeth - probably because Morpeth is a historical station, and Cramlington is a new build simple platform type.
Monument Platform 4 would be busy on Newcastle match days
Love the videos. Smethwick Galton Bridge?
I would like to say to you I like your videos and most important thing I like in your videos your British English accent second for me how you explain us. You doing very good thank you very much.
The moment I saw the title, I knew it was the most pointless thing to do. End result : watched the entire video. This series is Internet Gold
On less straightforward journeys such as this I'd welcome a summary at the end of the trip you took. Just a suggestion.
Platform 7 in Newcastle is the undisputed coldest place on earth (my opinion from many years of waiting for the Hexham train)
In the past you could have gone between the two BR Manors Stations, North and West I think they were called.
So you went from Central Station on Northern to Sunderland and then got the Metro from Sunderland back through Central Station to get to Monument? I get the journey was pointless but why cross the same station on your trip?
0:54 welcome to Norhern Teritory
I'll be surprised if trains will be on time or not cancelled...
Platform 4 is used for the Newcastle matches. So gets used by fans. 😀
You popped up in my recommended today, watched a few, not badley done at all I must say (ok ok, I show myself the door......oh wait...)
One of the vids was the slowest journey... after seeing a couple of your vids I wonder why you didn't put that in the pointless journeys series as it literally is a pointless journey.
Also, as a fellow railfan I have to ask... do you sim besides your real life travels? if so... TSC or TSW? (or ... {shudders}... Trainz)
I would shudder more at TSW3 than Trainz! 😄 Noting beats TSC.
London King's Cross to London St Pancras
How about Bradford interchange to Bradford Forster Square
Always curious about what tickets you buy for these pointless journeys?
How about Worcestershire Parkway high level to low level?
The St James Line would be used for all football goers as it stops outside the stadium for matchdays
0:53 you was like "oh" because the train was CancelEd!
From newcastle you could have got the metro one stop to monument then switch to manors.
too be honest the detour made the pointless journey even more pointless love it first time view enjoying what i see
as a student i often used platform 4 returning to college after shipping in the dinner hour
I used platform 4 once, then the train broke down just before st james.
Yo nick badley please do St Albans abbey to St Albans city
Do this with Meadowhall tram stop and Meadowhall train station in Sheffield even though the stations are right next to each other that would be hilarious 😂
Please havw a go in the Class 555s on the metro when they come out some time next year.
why go to to Sunderland when you could of got metro from Newcastle and it would of been the next 2 stops
Great video, Nick! Thanks for adding captions too
Manors actually receives around 25 tpd
Thank you for this amusing video ! You didn’t really need to go all the way to Sunderland to change for a northbound train to Manors. A simple cross platform change at Pelaw would have been much quicker, with additional trains coming up from South Shields !
Pelaw doesn’t have a national rail platform, he was getting a northern from Newcastle mainline to Sunderland, as Sunderland is a station shared between national rail and the metro, so he wouldn’t have to change stations like he would at a station like Heworth
@@billymcmedic4221 - I thought there was only one station at Heworth (used by National Rail and Metro)? You're right about Pelaw, no National Rail connection, but are you saying there are two separate stations for Heworth; NR and Metro? Because I ised to live in Heworth (albeit for a short while) and didn't know this haha.
@@droge192 aye yeah, you need to head out through the ticket barriers at heworth metro, cross over the bus station and you get heworth mainline
I have one, London Euston To Euston square
Already done that one! 😉
@@NickBadley oh.. I know! Manchester Piccadilly national rail to Manchester Piccadilly Metrolink like go to the airport or victoria or something
Another Pointless Journey Is Waterloo To Waterloo East
ah another pointless video - sorry - Journey - my bad lol
Whenever you're in London, you can do Catford to Catford Bridge... as they're literally a stones throw from each other. 🙂
You could have a conversation if you were at Catford and the other was at Catford Bridge (except there’s a main road there)
Next, do St Budeaux Ferry Road to St Budeaux Victoria Road!
I dont get the sunderland part. why not just take the metro from central
People go to st james for the football to watch newcastle united
You should go Cambridge to Cambridge north
Willesden junction high level to willesden junction low level
Catford to Catford Bridge 'stones throw away from each other.
Another suggestion, if you're in London ... West Hampstead (Jubilee line) -> West Hampstead (overground) -> West Hampstead (Thameslink) -> West Hampstead (Jubilee).
You can change for the Metro at Newcastle can't you?
Morpeth was and is beautiful , but seemed pointless adding to the journey, as the train back to Newcastle clearly went through Manors (as it said on the board). Surely just Manors > Newcastle > Sunderland > Manors Metro made more sense?
Making sense would have been Manors > Newcastle Central > Monument > Manors. But would be a much shorter video.
