    Pure nostalgia for me- I remember the Metro opening in 1980 and the transport freedom it gave to teenage me. The Walkergate stop was near where my parents grew up and met many years before and my Father worked close by. Tynemouth I knew well and had you stopped at Cullercoats, West Monkseaton, South Gosforth, Fawdon and Jesmond, you would have covered 85% of my life below the age of about 25! Then the lure of the Midlands and South became too great. So great to see it again and see how it has changed and developed.

    Shame you missed out Wallsend with its Latin signs. Haymarket is long because it was a built as a “demonstrator station” before the rest of the system, in order to evaluate the design. The rest of the system
    was built with shorter platforms because of the costs.

    Fun fact: this fleet is still the original fleet! They're planning on bringing in a new fleet next year, they were planned to have the fiest couple enter service this winter but... Apparently they didn't consider the dact that they need to train the drivers how to drive the mew trains...

    Glad to see you finally doing the Tyne and Wear metro! When I visited Newcastle in October last year, I loved it! It’ll be interesting to see what you think of the new Class 555. They have a similar exterior to the Class 777, but they’re different on the inside. Anyways, extremely well-presented video as always!

    Station road at Northumberland park did lead to a station (Backworth), which closed in 1977

  • @SimulationGuyOfficial
    @SimulationGuyOfficial Рік тому +51

    i will answer some questions that you asked in the video as i am local to the area.
    -the reason why there is a Station Road but no station there is because formerly, there actually used to be a station located under the road, named Backworth, it Closed in 1977, and a new station near the site wasnt opened until 2005.
    -Haymarket's Platform 2 is so long because, originally, it was planned that the trains would be 3 units long, but due to financial constraints, it was decided that the trains would run in Single or Double units opposed to the original Triple Unit operation that was planned.

      The reason Haymarket is soo long as it used to be a terminus platform when the system opened and could hold a second train. The stations have an extra cut out each end underground ontop of this for the original 3metrocar length plans.

    • @SimulationGuyOfficial
      @SimulationGuyOfficial Рік тому +4

    Northumnerland park will have a BR station when the Blyth and Tyne opens as the Northumberland line between this year and 2026 but they are making fairly good progress the idea is to merge train times with metro and tickets so time will tell if it all works! The Metro is brilliant for what it is but its such a shame that the cross-North-Tyneside line isn't there (although the Test Track is part of the George Stephenson Railway Museum) & ends near Percy Main.
    Arguably the Metro should have used the old Tyne Electrics layout with updated signals etc. A bit like MerseyRail seems to do.
    Gateshead station when taken in the round of the former architecture of the area is far more understandable than it looks on its own. Brutalist magnificence.
