Great video .. enjoyable to watch. Two points though .. (1)You were initially heading to North Shileds on the Tyne & Wear Metro but got off at West Jesmond. If you had stayed on the same train, it was only 14 more stops to North Shields, but it was actually longer (16 stops) going back via Newcastle Central to South Shields (2)If you take the ferry from South Shields to North Shields, there's a free bus from near the ferry landing up to the Metro Station, meaning you don't have to walk up that steep hill. Regards from Whitley Bay
I'm not sure why the County Council had a timetable up where you were standing for the Carlisle to Lockerbie bus, but you are meant to pick the bus up either at the 'country services' stand at the Courts (the bottom one, just outside the station) or at the market at the other end of the city centre. It is one of those split bus services to meet the law on how long a stage carriage service can be, so it ends at Gretna then continues on the same bus but technically a different journey from Gretna to Lockerbie. Cumbria has lots of those and the publicity is often confusing. Plan B would have been the 1816 X95 to Galashiels for Edinburgh, or the 1810 service 79 to Dumfries direct. There were rail replacement coaches from Lockerbie for every timetabled train, so they were running until very late, after 2200. There was no real danger of getting stranded at Carlisle or Lockerbie. I have now checked, the timetable at The Courts does state that 382 route buses go to Lockerbie, the one at Devonshire Street is listing ALL buses which go VIA gretna (very few of which terminate there).
Memories for me - my uncle adopted a rescue dog that was found going back and forth on the ferry between North and South Shields. What an epic challenge to make all these misc connections, Scott. You are certainly a real timetable junkie. The Avanti train is wonderful!
It's so good to see the young at heart , 💜, out and about , living their lives , wether it be on 'planes , trains and everything ' , or trekking the park tracks , and thourghly enjoying themselves . It would be so cool to still have Trams running where I live - pretty much every town of size had a tramways , now they are gone , in favour of clogged up motorways and no parking spaces for cars .
When your videos are marked "what could possibly go wrong," I strap myself in and hope for the absolute worst. Well, not the ABSOLUTE worst because then there'd be no further videos. But even if so, if that did come to pass, what a legacy left for others to "fail" so gloriously for all of eternity! (
Wow, this challenge is so exciting, I'm exhausted just watching it 😄 Looked like a very loud, eventful adventure and so fortunate to complete it in one day.
This seems to be a rendering issue and not on youtubes side, it's like it's rendered at 15 frames per second instead of 30 or 60, not sure what he normally records in as I'm a new viewer in the past couple of days!
The "thumbs up" was a must after that journey. It seemed as though you were doomed several times. The bus going straight past the station in Dumfries doesn't sound like joined up transport! Luckily it didn't matter which way you went to get the North/South Shields ferry (I have used it when working on Tyneside in pre-Metro days). Good luck for your next one.
Great stuff. If you want my opinion, and you don't, I wouldn't make #4 any easier - it's all part of the challenge, and the appeal of these videos. Thanks Scott!
I had to rewatch this video because of UA-cam glitch making the video stutter and almost unwatchable that glitch seems now to be fixed thank you for such genuine down to earth content that is always super enjoyable to watch, I always look forward to your uploads
Hey Scott. Great timetable challenge. Ive stood at that bus stop near Lockerbie Stn thinking whether it was in use or not a couple of times. Well done for holding out on this one.
That split ticketing sounds interesting. I did read that buying a Stansted to Birmingham single (which needs a change in London) is cheaper than the Stansted express.
I guess it depends where in "London" you're changing - if it's outside Zone 1 (say Tottenham Hale or Cheshunt) and you get the timing right and ride a load of slow trains in the process I imagine that there would be a decent saving.
An epic day trip made on a bad day for public transport. Well done that man! Just to add to other comments, there’s a definite flicker and I’m glad I’m not epileptic!
Scott that was ambiscious. I am glad you beat the challenge. I get panicked when I have to make more than one connection and trust public transport to come through. Fun to watch though.
A recent subscriber to your videos Scott and loving them. I would love to see you do a timetable challenge involving buses, trains, trams or underground (like the Metro), ferries and planes! I think that would be a real challenge if it's possible.
Good to see 800109 (LNER unit) is in good health (other than the door defect...). I helped repair it after it collided with an HST and derailed in Leeds a few years back.
It is a small world indeed! I wonder which incident you are referring to? When I did a google search, nearly all the results refer to the engineering train derailment at Church Fenton in May last year.
Great video Scott. Really enjoying these timetable challenges, getting to see brief glimpses of different places coupled with the uncertainty of making connections, busses showing up etc, it’s very enjoyable to watch in the comfort of home. Keep up the good work
I’ve proberly said this before but omg you look exactly like my uncle. Even same teeth, build, hair everything!! And guess where he lives …. North fricking Shields !!!!
I lived for a year in Jesmond, Newcastle. The Metro is an excellent service. It is confusing at first until you learn the direction to go in. The ferry is great way to do a cycle journey down one side of the river and back on the other side. Designated cycle paths most of the way. I am not keen enough on public transport to use except when essential. You are obviously dedicated to the exploration of the network.
Such a great video Scott. I really like the way you describe the journey in all your videos but this looked like one tough challenge. Admire your strong spirit and positive attitude. Great video, take care.
As usual, another great video Scott, thoroughly enjoyable ! I’m a little confused why you got off that Metro at West Jesmond as it looked like it was heading to St James via the coast so would have gone to North Shields (albeit via Whitley Bay) and is a nicer way round on the top loop rather than the bottom. Whilst it’s slightly longer going round that way it would have been no slower than doubling back! As somebody else mentioned there’s a bus between North Shields Town Centre to the Ferry and it’s free to use if you are using the Ferry. Maybe handy for next time!
Nice one enjoyed. That was a tough one well done on a note years ago my gran and mum got train back from Edinburgh back here too Aberdeen or so they thought until my gran said this countryside don't look famliar they went on opposite direction train too london so easy done in through stations bet many done it well you survived the challenge things do go wrong like rail bus etc like I had last year great video thanks I sure many outside Scotland UK would love your travel videos well done
If your travelling to Mid Wales from london. Go through marylebone to bham airport then from there to shrewsbury and change to arivia Wales. Costs you less than half the price than if you go the way they tell you. And doesn't add on too much time to your journey, theres loads of ways. Love that your showing these too
What a brilliant video, there was some awesome views and show what the building or things are.the hen party would have me move away from a train seat 😂😂,
Great video as always, if you ever get the metro fagain from Central to North shields, change at monument, and there is a stairway up yo the line from St james. It saves you at least 10 mins instead of going round the coat via whitley Bay
Welcome to my part of the world, I’m just a mile or so down the coast from North Shields in Whitley Bay, hope you enjoyed your time albeit fairly short. Nice video, I enjoy these timetable challenges.
Wow! You must have been exhausted. How do you find the Metro when you just got to a town on another form of transportation? Bewildering I’m amazed how you put it together, successful or not, the planning was great. Good work!!
Very entertaining video! Would it be possible for you to add the prices of tickets etc to the video? Also, what's the best way of finding the cheapest split tickets for trains? Cheers and great content as always 👍
Kin ell that was a tough one Scott…. Not sure if I could have hacked that one….. to stressful by half…. I wondered where you got your grey hair from🤔😂😂…..well done that man👍🏼
Great content - keep it up! I'm from Canada and a few years ago we did a road trip all over the UK, eventually ending up in Calgary on Mull (I'm from Calgary in Canada, so that's why we went there). Our first stop in Scotland was Lockerbie, right around suppertime, so we stopped off at a restaurant to grab a bite to eat. My girlfriend got fish and chips, and I decided to try, for the first time in my life, haggis. I did so with some trepidation as the ingredient list was very off-putting, but I tried it and.... absolutely fell in love with haggis! I had it five more times during our time in Scotland, each time different, each time delicious. Alas, you just can't get a good haggis here in Canada....
I kinda done that though I stopped for a few days in Carlisle. From London took a bus at Victoria Station then arrived at Buchanan Bus terminal, stayed in Glasgow for 3 days to go on Highlsnds Tour then go to Glasgow Central station to go to Carlisle & from there caught a train to Haltwhistle station where Bus AD122 stop that ply in Hadrian's Wall. Then returned to Carlisle to see Carlisle Castle where Mary Queen of Scots was incarcerated, Carlisle Cathedral, Museum rtc. Then return to Glasgow & stay for 2 nights before returning by train to London.
At Berwick Upon Tweed in Coach A on LNER trains the front door doesn't open Northbound and the rear door doesn't open Southbound due to the platform being a bit to short.
Watched all your videos in the past few months and the one weekend I’m in the centre of Edinburgh and you pass through and head to my hometown of South Shields 🤣 keep up the good work
Nice Video, Yes the lights on the scotrail 156 will turn off if the engine is off as well same with 158s, think its to save power. and stop battery's from going flat
Last summer (2021) I travelled through Germany from Rostock to Munich with.. 8 changes ! NOT included the change from bus to S-Bahn in Lütten Klein and from S-Bahn to Regio-Bahn in Rostock Hbf... It worked like a swiss clockwork !
Train travel in the UK is a nightmare regarding planning and getting a good price value. A train trip from London to Glasgow can set you off to 300 pounds one way, and that might not even be in first class. The trick as I found out is to either do a return ticket and dont use that totally, or split up the whole trip into smaller trips, changing trains, etc. UK has way too many train operators. Comparing to Sweden and Norway, where you can get a 1st class ticket from Stockholm to Oslo for about 30-50 pounds with the government owned SJ.
Fascinating trip again. So what happens to passengers who actually want to get off that LNER train with the broken door? Do they end up going on to Newcastle or is this sufficient reason to pull the communication cord?
The door was not broken he just would have missed the announcement about the rear carriage not opening at Berwick. No idea why he would have needed to get off to change carriage when he could have walked all the way through

Great to see you visit Newcastle. My hometown. We’re very blessed to have the Metro (I do feel the same about all the hen and stag dos!)
My favourite city in the world - and I was born in London.
Video seems to be stuttering, hopefully just a UA-cam processing issue that will be resolved if I come back in a few hours
Thought it was my tablet 🤣
Yeah very stuttery on my end too. Hopefully sorts itself.
This seems to be a rendering issue and not on youtubes side, it's like it's rendered at 15 frames per second instead of 30 or 60, not sure what he normally records in as I'm a new viewer in the past couple of days!
Where ever the issue was , it appears to have been sorted out .
You should try do Lands End to John o Groats using only local buses. That would be a challenge.
Already been done - by Eric Newton - who published a book about it. I got the paperback off Amazon.
The "thumbs up" was a must after that journey. It seemed as though you were doomed several times.

Great stuff. If you want my opinion, and you don't, I wouldn't make #4 any easier - it's all part of the challenge, and the appeal of these videos. Thanks Scott!
Being from the Borders, it's great to see some familiar places in the far south of Scotland/ far north of England getting showcased!
I had to rewatch this video because of UA-cam glitch making the video stutter and almost unwatchable that glitch seems now to be fixed thank you for such genuine down to earth content that is always super enjoyable to watch, I always look forward to your uploads
What a great challenge. You should put up what the cost was of each leg of the journey was. A like from me.
Loved this video, had many ups and downs but can't wait for Number 4!
Hey Scott. Great timetable challenge. Ive stood at that bus stop near Lockerbie Stn thinking whether it was in use or not a couple of times. Well done for holding out on this one.
Wow. That was a close call but you made it 👍
Great viewing. Next time in Lockerbie go to Cafe 91 in the high Street, awesome food, especially the breakfasts.
Really enjoy your shows, all the travel without the waiting.
I'd love if you included some prices on more videos. Keep on travelling Scott. 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Love these challenges, have you considered a 2/3 day one taking in Scotland, England, Wales, Irish Republic & Northern Ireland?
You definitely earnt my like. Congrats on making it OK.
There is actually a FREE unpublished shuttle bus from the ferry landing to North Shields Metro
Your face at 9:40 is priceless!
An epic day trip made on a bad day for public transport. Well done that man! Just to add to other comments, there’s a definite flicker and I’m glad I’m not epileptic!

@@andyyu5957 800109 collided with 43300 at Neville Hill depot. November 2019 as I recall.
No door defect. The coach he was in is not fully accomodated due to a short platform
Great video Scott. Really enjoying these timetable challenges, getting to see brief glimpses of different places coupled with the uncertainty of making connections, busses showing up etc, it’s very enjoyable to watch in the comfort of home. Keep up the good work
Nice videos Scott but, can you tell us the prices of each of your journey in future please ? I`m sure it would help the tourists and us too. Thanks.
I’ve proberly said this before but omg you look exactly like my uncle. Even same teeth, build, hair everything!! And guess where he lives …. North fricking Shields !!!!
I love these unpretentious travel vlogs Scott. Many thanks, keep it up.

R.I.P the poor soul who lost their life.
A good video there Scott enjoyed watching it.
You should come to Manchester again one day soon.
Wow, I didn't know that Newcastle had a metro. Amazing!
Simple concept, executed well
Just found your channel, some great videos
Top man, I love your challenges
Thanks Scott, really enjoyed your video….
Nice vlogs .I've seen a few now. A bit daft travelling on the Easter weekend but I guessthat's what the spirit of adventure is all about. Nice one!
Such a great video Scott. I really like the way you describe the journey in all your videos but this looked like one tough challenge. Admire your strong spirit and positive attitude. Great video, take care.
great video scott would be great to hear prices as you stated splitting saved you 50% be nice to know the cost of total trip also bus prices 👍
I love split ticketing!

What you do for us, a wonderful video. You and Steve would starve if you couldn’t find fish and chips!
Excellent video and you visited my local station Newcastle the metro can be a pain in backside at best of times
Another brilliant idea
I have watched many, and very much enjoy your videos. Hoping to make it up to Glasgow myself to do some walking near Loch Lomond this year 👍
Brilliant really really enjoyed this.

Local knowledge, if he'd gone to North Shields first instead of South Shields he wouldn't have had to walk up that big hill from the ferry either.
Welcome to my part of the world, I’m just a mile or so down the coast from North Shields in Whitley Bay, hope you enjoyed your time albeit fairly short. Nice video, I enjoy these timetable challenges.
Scott you are a star ⭐️ well done from paul
Brilliant video Scott,!
I was born in north shields many moons ago looks like nothing has changed good video!
Public transport that runs after 6 is always amazing to me. Living in stoke its a foreign concept.
Very interesting and entertain g.. You put a lot of thought into these trips and make very good reports. Many thanks.
Wow! You must have been exhausted. How do you find the Metro when you just got to a town on another form of transportation? Bewildering I’m amazed how you put it together, successful or not, the planning was great. Good work!!
I've gone from Lands End to the top on a bus pass - now that's stressfull!
Anymore timetable challenges
Great video as always, and glad you completed the challenge in the end!
Very entertaining video! Would it be possible for you to add the prices of tickets etc to the video? Also, what's the best way of finding the cheapest split tickets for trains? Cheers and great content as always 👍
Sorry late always Big Thumbs up 😁👍👍👍👍👍

Good and interesting Scot,😊
looks very chaotic.. love Newcastle 👍

Well done mate
Been binging the channel, some more great content!
Watched all your videos in the past few months and the one weekend I’m in the centre of Edinburgh and you pass through and head to my hometown of South Shields 🤣 keep up the good work
Phew, if you ever get the chance try this in Japan, you’ll be mesmerised how punctual everything is
Love Your channel!

Dumfries is my local train station and I tell you it's a station of two half's, it's either packed solid or dead
Well done I love all your content keep it coming

try glasgow to penzance by any means of transport but not on national express i did it in 4 days
Awesome video buddy from Alan Shelley in Lowestoft
Chill man!!!
No idea why he would have needed to get off to change carriage when he could have walked all the way through
Great trek around my neck of the woods. Pity you got the wrong metro. You would be walking down Borough Bank in North Shields as opposed to up! The Central Station metro, you need to go to Monument which is the cross point in the system. Only found your channel recently. Loved the Viking Seaways Crossing. 🚢👍
What a great video to demonstrate why you don't travel on holidays.
been in the Tower fish bar too.
What a stressful day, if I did that and I had to contend with all of the issues that you had I don't think I'd leave home for the next week.
Nice Video! In fact, just 1 week before i went on the South Shields Metro line and then also connected with a Carlisle Train! 😂
I'm enjoying this so much 🎉❤
Great video as per usual keep em coming

You pass into England much quicker on the east side as Berwick is much further north than Carlisle.Other than the Tyne Foot ferry ⛴️ there are another two ferries internally in the north east. The Kielder Water one and the Transporter Bridge from Port Clarence,a village a bit south of Hartlepool,to Middlesbrough. The Transporter is a sort of hybrid between a ferry, bridge and cable car and sadly broken at the moment and facing an uncertain future.I suppose that you could count the Seahouses to Farne Islands boats as ferries too so 4.
It was supposed to get a train from Glasgow Queen Street to Fort William today and take the Jacobite Steam train to Mallaig the next day. Unfortunately I ended up having to drive all the way as my train was cancelled very last minute and there were no more buses or trains till the next day and I had a hotel reservation in Fort William that I can’t cancel
