As a musician she always makes me cry. I dont know what she speaking about but she is not only amazing singer also perfect story teller. My feelings about same with Dimash. They grab you to their colourful universe. Amazing artists. This is a big chance to live same age with them...
Wow. What happened to this So Hyang’s Arirang Alone performance? I saw so many tough vocal coaches breaking into tears in the end....Apparently I love this song so much, too, so I watched almost all available reaction/analysis videos. Your analyses and teaching are so good. Thanks! I received both a reaction and a nice lesson.
At the beginning amazingly she makes her voice a traditional instrument of korea. It's called heaguem. That's why she makes her voice light. Her voice is a beautiful instrument itself.
Hey Mark! I'm jealous you are gonna listen to her songs for the first time. It's an experience you will never forget, because she is merging your soul with hers with her unique style. Of course So Hyang is considered one of the best vocalists alive in terms of technique, but its just the tool for her, she is almost never showing off with it, but it allows her to accentuate the meaning and emotions. Her technique wasnt impeccable everytime, she constantly improves it even now which is amazing inspiration for everyone that age doesnt matter if you take something seriously. Truly a supreme professional. On top of that So Hyang's life story is amazing and she is such a sweetheart :) She is (i would say rather crazy) devoted gospel singer, cancer survivor, who doesnt want fame, sings in churches and on some important occasions with a noble goal to bless people and make them happy. She started participating in shows in 2012 by accident because producers were searching a replacement for a star with similar style. And that was a head start to her worldwide recognition, otherwise this gem might've never been heard by us. I recommend you to listen the following songs: - Bridge of the troubled water - Raise me up (2018 version) - King Of Masked Singer performances (Dear Love, Hug me, Mona Lisa, Home, Day Day). They are all very different and in many styles, varying from really deep cries to rock and even rap. This show is really fun and great, to be honest, performances and judges on panel are amazing there. - I have nothing (she made her own interpretation which is amazing) - Lean on me (rare occasion where she show-offs a little bit :)) - Everyone - Oh Holy Night - literally everything else because she is extremely consistent, despite having a lot of health problems which are really affecting her mood and strength. Best wishes!
This song has such deep meaning for Korean people. It’s hard to listen to without crying. So Hyang was supposedly crying during rehearsal for this performance which is probably where her tension comes from in the emotional part of the song. Her dress is a modern take on traditional Korean hanbok and her hairstyle is a modern take on traditional hairstyle. She is a phenomenal performer and our pride!
Sohyang is a Korean National Treasure. Her performances, Church and Charity events are legendary. What a great person and role model. Be proud of her!😇🤷♀️
Love it. You just analyzed the only singer in the world who can match Dimash talent and flawless techniques. I think tongue tension and jaw position are very important for new singing students, her Bb5 belting always gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it. Thanks a lot doc!
I haven't gotten through your whole analysis yet as I am writing this, but can I just say how incredible it is how she connects with the audience in this? The way she opens up to the crowd, CONDUCTS the crowd and absolutely is inviting them to sing along... It's such a unifying moment that goes above and beyond the limits of what a single performer can do on stage. It is now the collective performance of everyone in the room, and you can't help but just be full of joy.
I always tear up at that grand "Arirang" section and that big G that follows it towards the intense pre-coda. And I'm not even Korean. And people says she's void of emotions when performing smh
Thanks for the reaction and analysis. I love her so much and feel connected to her when i hear her singing. I wish you would listen to everyone it's a beautiful song she performed

When you asked what makes the performer a protagonist/our friend, I immediately thought, "Her smile and her eyes!". I've seen many Sohyang reactions/analysis from different reactors and most of them always state that they feel like Sohyang is a kind and warm person. Funny, because she is. Her eyes and smile do just that, instilling faith and warmth in you towards her. She's an amazing human being and performer.
Well, what makes somebody a protagonist or relatable to me is when I can simply feel the emotions that feeling. Whether it's sad or happy, if I am able to connect or empathize with you or sympathize with you, that makes you a protagonist for me.
And physically, I would say the way she swaying to the music and encouraging the audience to do the same is very appealing. That also makes her a protagonist.
I can't be any happier. You are getting to know both Dimash and sohyong. I love both of them. This is a very well known song for Koreans and Chinese ( I grow up listening to the Chinese version). I like her costume because it is a Korean traditional style ( the bottom part) and the collar is traditional style but they made the top part sheer which is great. Adding a little modern style on this traditional dress and the sheer top makes the dress less heavy. I also like her hair style. She has braids on the side, yes, like you said, she looks like a shy country girl at the beginning, although she was almost 40. I love this performance of her.
@@mcan9074 You're thinking traditional melody Arirang, which is a traditional folk song, but this rendition of Arirang that So hyang sings isn't the original. It's a newer song that was composed in the 80-90's.
You’re gonna really love her versatility, a lot of people call her the “female Dimash” so that alone should tell you how amazing she is. “Bridge over troubled water” is my absolute fave of hers. Hope to see it soon 😁
Have you discover why such a stupendous singer is relatively unknown in the world. There are reasons. I will let others explain. I recommend that if you react to Sohyang, please follow the recommendations given. SoHyang's performances are out of these world for rearranged covers for competitions. She has different shook factors in all her rearranged songs. If you do not follow their recommendations, you will end up with Sohyang singing the original version which does not showcase her extreme talent, songs such as Power of Love, My Heart Will Go On, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, etc. The same goes for OST like Last Promise, Only My Heart Knows, You can Only Imagine etc. Thanks for your reaction and analysis of my Queen.
that jaw thing, it bugged me at first too, for someone that teaches in a arts university, she wouldn't do such thing unknowingly. She does that intentionally as i see, to change the route of the air flow, and create dynamics in the sound. she doesn't do that always... just some vowels and big notes...
Yes, it seems to add vocal tension to the notes. It happens at the most dramatic point in the performance, where the song's tension builds just before she runs up to the Bb5-C6-Bb5 peak and continues on with more belt notes in the same breath.
I think of the bad a jaw positioning that you saw at first was simply her forgetting at first( perhaps from getting carried away in the performance), and then she mentally self corrected which is why she did it so well later on.
It happens at the most dramatic point in the performance, where the song's tension builds just before she runs up to the Bb5-C6-Bb5 peak and continues on with more belt notes in the same breath.
What an unexpected analysis! Surprised by your detailed review, particularly on the physiological aspect of singing. Your analysis showcases your knowledge of your professional craft as a voice coach and stage director, both in terms of insight and perspective. You asked for our input on what makes us emphasize with the performer. In case of Sohyang, the answer is simple. In all performances, there needs to be a hook to get our attention, be it the style, the dance, the stagecraft, what have you. There should be something exceptional. Sohyang's golden voice can grab your attention in no time. While her vocal compels for your attention, her uncanny ability to deliver the emotional message enroll the audience into her performance. Her stage is always delivered with perceived sincerity and we can trust in the purity of her message. The strongest factor that makes us side with the performer is the identification of the value of the act, and the value of the person. Once you buy into its value, it forms the bond that is hard to break. Speaking as an avid Sohyang fan, she satisfies all the aforementioned considerations. Knowing her background, one gains the advantage of viewing the act beyond what is in front of you, but the message the performance (or performer carries). It's off topic but I feel BTS offers an excellent example in the music world right now. I am excited to read the you already reacted to Sohyang's iconic Bridge Over Troubled Water. Look forward to your reaction and analysis.
yeh it is a Korean emotional song that they all know and relate to. She got training from one of the legendary vocal coaches...Streisand, M Jackson, Wonder...So Hyang. And as she has said, she practices more than anybody... she is basically paranoid about her talent not being up to scratch...self doubt this is why every performance from her is a perfected presentation in every respect, always powerful and almost always connects with the audience, quickly. If you wanted somebody to do a master class on singing, it is her. She does also teach singing at Uni in Korea sometimes. She totally floored Michael Bolton with her performance of Lean On Me, in a TV comp.
As perfect performance as you will ever find.. in every aspect.. Yes, a tech fest as always but what a story and the whole package was so well done. Orchestra, back up singers, solo violinist, dress, lighting.. Amazing..
This is the only video you will find that jaw off to the side ... I attribute it to her being nervous Immortal Songs is a stage every Korean wants to appear on and if i remember correctly this was her first appearance on the show ... Regardless of that I wonder why you had no comments on her placement ... Her perfect pitch ... Her utterly mind blowing Bb5 ... Her stamina ... Breath control ... Etc ... There is so much good to point out in this performance over the one rarely seen negative ... I hope you will watch other performances with a larger mindset as to what she is accomplishing ... By the way her dress is a traditional Hanbok worn for the theme/time of year ( Korean Holiday ) and also because she is singing a traditional song ...
@@ZashikiSH my problem is: Sohyang is so skillful and technically sound that I cannot be sure that Sohyang "flaw " of sidejaw is not just a technique she employs to smooth a high head voice. Regardless of of what other vocal coaches think about it, it doesn't affect the quality.
@@ZashikiSH I am a Medical Doctor not a Dr. of Music. Sohyang is a carrier of chronic Hepatitis B viral infection (she has been the source of this information). Arthritis, joint pain, and fatigue are main symptoms of Hep B. She uses the sidejaw alot. It's very evident on Horse Doctor, used here, on the stage version of The Song Begins with JinJoo
@@pamrenee6906 I am aware of her unfortunate medical condition and wish her the best. From what I've seen she's in much better health currently than 2016/17. Is that related to her jaw movement or did I misunderstand you? I didn't notice the side jaw in "The Song Begins", but yes in the studio version of "Only One Thing" (Horse Doctor OST) it's quite apparent, but that's also a much older performance.
@@ZashikiSH it happens in the version onstage at the Sketchbook at 1:34. Hep B causes joint pain and arthritis. Honestly I would not know if that is the cause without examining her. She is doing much better. I do notice fatigue as her concerts go on lately.
💞💞💞I so love Sohyang...not only her incredible beautiful voice, but I get so emotinal and touched in my heart! To me she sings vith her whole heart and emotions...and her incredible ability to tell the story of the song and she brings it to the listener ! I have often let my tears role when listening to her performances...they are so powerful! 💞💞💞 To me she is the queen of singers and Dimash is the king! 🙂 I would love for you to react to her performance "Everyone" , and I would strongly advice you find one with eng. sub. but without is just as amazing! Thx again for an awsome and very understandable explanation and reaction! Looking forward to the next!
That fatherly smile .... It doesn't matter how happy I am because when I hear this song I cry. At first I cried without knowing the meaning and when I learned it, it only became worse 🤦♀️😢
I think the jaw placement on those D5s, as you suggested, were purposeful for dramatic and tonal effect. D5 is an extremely easy note for her due to her extremely high tessitura, so she probably thought she could support with some extra added tension, the result being a smaller, tighter, and held back sound that sounds rather emotional. I think she just doesn’t want to open up quite as much on that particular note for that moment. She opens up on D5 most of the time, but never in this song, and she’s performed it many times. I definitely suggest “Bridge Over Troubled Water” next. Sohyang is just an incredible vocal technician. Her technique is absolutely incredible.
I think you are at least not an antagonist of Sohyang. :) Surprised at your unusual approach to analyzing and reacting to her performance. Almost everyone is fascinated by her vocal techniques such as hitting high notes, using chest and head voice quite freely and so on, but later she, as a sincere woman, captivates us like Wonder Woman's golden rope does. Of course, I've been held in captivity for years and... there's no escape from her.
Wow !!! So fantastic, powerful, beautiful and emotional ! So Hyang ! She is ranked as a star with Whitney and Mariah in the world's top singer category by the American Music Critics. I must say So Hyang is the only singer to combine Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in the world. Thanks for your good reaction. Good night ! From N.Y.
Thank you, Dr.Reynolds, for your wonderful reaction and techniques explanation, I am Dimash's fan (yet able to appreciate and absorb all the beauty there is in the world) Could you, please, do a comparative analysis of different Dimash's vocalizes or just do his Know from Moscow concert reaction? Thank you so much!
Re the costume, FYI, Korean people are called as 'white clothes people' as we wear white color in majority occasions. And the 'Arirang' is the representative Korean folk song, sometimes more famous than Korean anthem. So, wearing white dress(Korean traditional costume, 'Hanbok') in this stage means, she represents the Korean people.
So Hyang despite her reputation of powerful, emotive and high range - she is actually the global Empress of Legato. The legato she did at the beginning of a recent performance of You Raise Me Up (2018 Immortal Songs2) - in one little section hard to tell when one noted ended and the other started, and quite often has these little easter eggs in her arrangements.
I like so much your reaction and analysis Dr. Marc! Its very informative! Aside from enjoying Sohyang's perfs, i get a free training on singing/vocal session and stage techniques there after! What else can we ask for? Hope u cud react to her Dear Love masked performance. The only drawback is that you wont see her face and analyze her facial actions. Youre just going to have to analyze her voice! Looking forward!
To add my input to your question of the day, I would say when I am evaluating someone, I want to feel sincerity. I get that feeling with people who I feel are very facially expressive. I want their emotions to be clear just by looking at their face. I also think being very open with their stance and body posture is important. An open posture is very inviting and welcoming, whereas a closed stance would make a person seem more isolated and alone.
I would like to know what you were thinking and feeling, especially at the part you had tears in your eyes. Did the performance remind you of something or like you said, brought you to a new place like somewhere you don't normally go? Like a small fishing village at the coast of Korean peninsula where people work hard for a better life? Or you had tears because like many people, their eyes become watery whenever they hear high notes? They can't help it.☺️
Very thorough and thoughtful analysis. The most complete breakdown of any Sohyang performance around. Great to see you become emotional and sit with it as well. Only constructive feedback would be to limit the number "Skip" & "Original Link Below" reminders during the performance. One cue is more than enough. Beyond the first cue/pause, it only disrupted the performance momentum and viewer attention. Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the feedback. Im trying to find the best way to get past getting blocked that causes the least disruption and annoyance. I would rather not break it up at all but when I didn't the video got blocked.
This is my first time watching you. I really loved your analysis of So Hyang's performance. She is one of my favorite singers. Another favorite of mine that I would love to here your input on is Hua Chenyu. Specifically his performance of Child on the show singer, the same one that Dimash and Jessie J performed on. Looking forward to more videos from you. Sincerely a new subscriber
Why do you look bored in that thumbnail? LOL, I hope it's not indicated of your reaction here. She really is an incredible singer. I enjoy this channel!
You have just watched a technically super performer. I guess no one else will tell you that she is a Music Professor at Baeksuk University in Seoul. ua-cam.com/video/gNP5GNNdiiQ/v-deo.html She is credentialed, practiced, and superbly pleasant to listen to and watch. Her performances, Charity events and Church Services are legendary. The "costume " is appropriate as a traditional Baksok. Most Women in Korea are married in one. It was not chosen by accident. 🤷♀️ Check out this Religion light song. She flows effortlessly between Korean and English. ua-cam.com/video/H5e7MPre7iY/v-deo.html I'd like to see your reaction to that one.
When you started talking about jaw tension ,it hit close to home for me.For some damn reason when my jaw is completely relaxed when I open for the AHHH vowel my jaw goes to side without me realising it.I think it is because of the braces that I got when I was younger. It feels like I am just dropping my jaw down but it slightly hoe to the side.
No one knows who composed Arirang or whether Arirang Hill actually existed. It's a song that's been passed down from mouth to mouth for a long time. Since ancient times, Korea has had many invasions in other countries due to its geopolitical position. Crossing the Arirang Hill means overcoming any hardships for Koreans.

There's a Chinese version of this song? Really? This song was composed by a Korean song-writer back in the 80's or early 90's.
@@cosmos8098 as far as I know, this folk song is 5-600 years old.
She so amazing love her voice. Did your know she is cancer survivor. I’m happy for her wish her the best in life.💜💜💜💜💜💜
You have to watch her singing " you raise me up " This stage is legendary. !!!
Not true. The side jaw is used occasionally by Sohyang. She uses it in Bridge over Troubled Water and others.
Thank you~
Welcome to Sohyang world~^^
I have nothing, bridge over troubled water, you raise me up(ver.2018), oh holy night, lean on me
Please react to Sohyang - Everyone! She has said it technically is the hardest song she has every performed!
I would love for you to react to her performance "Everyone" , and I would strongly advice you find one with eng. sub. but without is just as amazing! Thx again for an awsome and very understandable explanation and reaction! Looking forward to the next!
This performance gets me highly emotional every time I see it 😢 ♥️
That fatherly smile ....
It doesn't matter how happy I am because when I hear this song I cry. At first I cried without knowing the meaning and when I learned it, it only became worse 🤦♀️😢
Pls react to So Hyang Lean On Me !!!
Thank you very much for listening to SoHyang's song.
I love the soft begin and then she exploded and in the end she sang again soft! What a controle ! OMG !
Thank you, I love her!
Wow Dr. Marc, just wow, you're awesome. that's all I can say...
Sorirang😘
I must say So Hyang is the
only singer to combine Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in the world. Thanks for your good reaction. Good night ! From N.Y.
nice, have seen other songs of hers (so's) this is the first that has captured my attention!
Everything you need to know about singing/performing is in this song and her voice.. Everything.
So Hyang sneaks up on you. The softness and sweetness lures you in, then the power, belts & agility take your soul. leaves ya shook lol
Thank you, Dr.Reynolds, for your wonderful reaction and techniques explanation, I am Dimash's fan (yet able to appreciate and absorb all the beauty there is in the world)
Could you, please, do a comparative analysis of different Dimash's vocalizes or just do his Know from Moscow concert reaction? Thank you so much!
Re the costume, FYI, Korean people are called as 'white clothes people' as we wear white color in majority occasions. And the 'Arirang' is the representative Korean folk song, sometimes more famous than Korean anthem. So, wearing white dress(Korean traditional costume, 'Hanbok') in this stage means, she represents the Korean people.
Thanks for reacting to Sohyang, she is amazing. It will like you! Please react to more of her.
🙏🏻🙏🏻 great analysis and reaction
Loved your analysis !
Well.. I promise I wrote this before I got to the end of the video!
Good damn it So Hyang ! She makes me cry every time !!! Also tongue tension is a nightmare 😂
Great reaction!
Just a bit of constructive criticism.
Put only one "skip to ....for analysis" at the beginning. It was very annoying to have it pop up several times.
Yeah agree
It's done for copyright reasons I believe.
her jaw moving side way is just habit I think, because when she talks and smiles I see that quiet often too, but she looks cute that way though hehehe
She never trained for classical music but still doing good
There is someone call "SANDUL" his songs in the same program is awesome too 💙 programe name is "immortal songs"
I enjoy this channel!
please, please watch tan wei wei 's "night in ulaanta's night" with hanggai on a chinese talent type show!
You have just watched a technically super performer. I guess no one else will tell you that she is a Music Professor at Baeksuk University in Seoul.

She is credentialed, practiced, and superbly pleasant to listen to and watch. Her performances, Charity events and Church Services are legendary. The "costume " is appropriate as a traditional Baksok. Most Women in Korea are married in one. It was not chosen by accident. 🤷♀️ Check out this Religion light song. She flows effortlessly between Korean and English. ua-cam.com/video/H5e7MPre7iY/v-deo.html
I'd like to see your reaction to that one.
Please react to So Hyang Everyone :D
You are so handsome man 👨 😘
I honestly don't think it's a mistake when she moves her jaw to the side like that.
Great analysis. May I suggest Forestella's (포레스텔라 )cover of Bohemian rhapsody ?
When you started talking about jaw tension ,it hit close to home for me.For some damn reason when my jaw is completely relaxed when I open for the AHHH vowel my jaw goes to side without me realising it.I think it is because of the braces that I got when I was younger. It feels like I am just dropping my jaw down but it slightly hoe to the side.
아리랑은 시련과 고난에도 꺽이지 않고 담담하게 앞으로 나아가는 우리 민족의 정신과도 같습니다.

Did you do a reaction to Ha Hyun Woo? If you didn’t make sure you do one of his song in the masked singer

Amazing reaction🤗 Please react to Polina Gagarina "Кукушка" ep.4 Singer 2019🙏
Everything she does is by her choice. I dont agree with it wasnt intentional.. Not with her. She is the tech master..
She is South Korean.
Stop crying. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
Despues de escuchar a dimash, ya ningun cantante me sorprende, mejor dejen de cantar jaja
Dokdo is KOREA
First time I heard her...a female Dimash!!! Isn't that great! I will look her up. Thanks.
The first time the word tongue was spelt (tounge) the second time it was spelt right. Great reaction though. 😁
Not sure why I missed that but thanks for the catch and thanks for watching!
That's what happens when you sing, and your tongue is too relaxed and hangs out of your mouth.
Welcome to the world of Sohyang!! She's a korean gospel singer, also a cancer survivor.
