Just a little background on Arirang... Arirang is the unofficial anthem of the Korean people... it is a song that connect the south and north and korean in chinese land around Baekdu Mountain.. it is a deep sadness from being occupied for nearly half century by Japan, being marginalised by china, and currently being split in half tearing families apart.. Arirang also signify the longing to reunite not only the lands but hearts of the people that is yet to heal after the korean war.
Also to add, there is a line in the song asking Dokdo if it hung in there alright during the night, which refers to Japan claiming the native Korean island to be theirs since the country's temporary occupation of Korea, even against historical evidence. Since it is a matter that Japan brazenly uses to try and leverage power, the song asks if Dokdo is holding up alright, since it must be so weary being in the middle of this ongoing struggle.
Thank you for your reaction. if you want to hear another songs of her, keep this oder! 1) Bridge Over Troubled Water 2) I have nothing 3) Lean on me 4) Arirang alone 5) You raise me up 6) A holy night 7) Where are you 8) Dream 9) Home (Masked Singer vesion) 10) Dear love (Masked Singer vesion) or Mona lisa 11) Hug me (Masked Singer vesion) 12) Breathe (Masked Singer vesion) 13) Everyone
Thanks, beautifully explained. She is amazing. Obvious choices are: bridge over troubled water, You raise me up, Lean on Me. But Everyone has me in tears everytime.
So Hyang is amazing. She has a beautiful backstory that you should check it out, she has gained many contracts but she declined because she really doesn't care about money or fame. Her life motto is to comfort other people with her voice, since she also has been through a lot. She's a cancer survival and due to many chemotherapy, her immunity isn't the best, she gets sick often, you should check her "You Raise Me Up" performance, she had pneumonia on this performance day and the doctor told her she shouldn't even tall but she still went and gave us that performance.
Sohyang is absolutely amazing and her take on this song is incredible. It makes me cry every time. This song is so important to the Korean people. It's a song of both pain and hope and even though I'm not Korean myself, I feel the message so deeply each time I listen to Sohyang singing it, with or without subtitles. Thank you for your reaction and analysis.

Welcome to wonderful So Hyang world. I hope to see you react her other unbelievable renditions soon. Her 'I Have Nothing' (and her own song titled 'Dream' at the same stage) is legendary. She has an admirable personality and a masterful voice. Btw, you are so adorable!
Thank you for reacting to her performance. This is one of many successful songs in her career. And she is also considered as the best vocalist of South Korea
This is the first song that I heard from Sohyang. I have repeated it umpteen times. I wanted to listen to more of her songs but I can't imagine getting another song better than this from her. Welcome to So Hyang's world. :) This song is about the break and unification of Korea and means a lot to Korean people. Her dress is a traditional hanbok. So Hyang always dresses the part. Seeing what she is wearing and her backgrounds is on par with her voice-always magnificant. You might like to react to "Bridge over troubled water" from Immortal Songs 2. That is the best version. She is a Christian Gospel singer and cancer survivor. Due to the cancer (she has to take medication for the last 20 years) she is often unwell so you want to be sure to react to the songs where she is well. One version of Hug me going around I can tell she is sick so I wish people would not react to those. Anything before 2012 won't be as spectacular as this. I believe she was self-taught and had some lessons from Michel Jackson's vocal coach, Seth Riggs, round about the 2012 mark.

Hey Lauren. I think you would love Everyone. In this tour de force, Sohyang use a variety of vocal and performance styles as well as her wonderful technical skill. One courageous a cappella passage stands out for me. Sohyang says she gets nervous but I never see it or hear it. She is fearless on the stage.

I believe that in order to get a better idea of what this song is about, it is necessary to listen to the versions that are probably closer to the probable original. I think the North Korean version - except for the last stanza that has apparently been added to promote propagandistic aims - is truer to the original. Based on my own independent study of Korean language and history its vocabulary is largely based on Hebrew, Akkadian, and Geez, a language that has a similar relationship to Tigrinya (a northern Ethiopian language) as Latin does to Italian. All of these languages are classified as Hamito-Semitic or Afro-Asiatic languages, although it seems many Koreans probably don't have enough respect for Africa to consider the evidence that would support the belief Korean is one of these Hamito-Semitic languages. Recently, there has been some research to show that Korean has many similarities to "Sumerian" which is closely linked to Akkadian. I believe this song is probably much much older than the 600+ years that has been mentioned, and its author has apparently inserted Hebrew words in a coded way to remind Koreans of their spiritual roots. If you look at a translation of the North Korean version, it becomes more obvious. It seems that this Korean folk song has concatenated many Hebraic words in order to preserve a Messianic message for future generations. I believe the original lyrics of the chorus were Ariel, Ariel, Ari, Ariel - or alternatively Avraham, Avraham, Ari Ariel. Ari means "lion" in Hebrew, and Ariel is the ancient name for Tsiyyon ("Zion"), which is the holy mountain in the Bible, and one that is important in Biblical prophecy. The fact that Ariel, which apparently later morphed to "Arirang", was originally intended as the destination appears likely, because some versions use the preposition meaning "to" rather than "over" after the phrase "Arirang hill" (Korean 아리람 고개로), so this would mean that Arirang hill is not just an obstacle to overcome on the way, but rather the final destination. The allusions to rest appear to be references to the sabbaths that must be observed on the way there, since it is several thousand miles from Korea to the holy mountain. In the version sung in North Korea, there is a reference to a few Biblical narratives. One phrase says 10 "ri" (which would be equivalent to about 4 km, since almost 400 meters is equivalent to one "ri" - but in Korean, "ri" also refers to an administrative district such as a village) would not be reached before there would be a disabling foot ailment. (Apparently 1 "ri" is equivalent to 700-1000 paces, depending on whether one is carrying a load or whether one is an adult or child.) This is apparently very rich in symbolism of various kinds. I believe there are a few important Biblical themes being symbolised here. First is the prophecy found in Genesis 3 that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent's head while the latter bites the former's heel. Most Biblical scholars acknowledge that this is a prophecy about the Messiah (who as offspring conceived within a virgin is her seed) and most Christians believe the reference to the serpent's biting the Messiah's heel is a reference to the crucifixion. If one reads Matthew 10, where Yeshua commissions his 12 apostles to evangelise the 10 houses of Israel, who at this point were scattered around the world, it becomes clear why this song is saying that not all 10 districts would be reached before the foot injury occurs. A secondary referent of the symbolism seems to be Baal-Peor, which is represented by the Korean word "Baal-byeong"; although "byeong" means ailment or disease, I believe it came to mean this as it was borrowed from this name of a place where there was an altar set up for Baal; and in fact, the people who were sexually seduced into into idolatrous worship of Baal at Peor were struck with plagues. It was also the fact that Israel never managed to rid herself of Baal worship that became the reason YHVH allowed her to be conquered by her enemies and thereby scattered among the nations. The word "shibri" actually is the masculine form of the number "seven" in Hebrew; so the fact that a Hebrew word like that appears in a Korean folk song in such a context seems significant. Also the word "radah" means "enlarge" or expand, so the combination of "ri" and "do" appearing in juxtaposed fashion appears significant as well. The next concatenated Hebrew words seem to be the Hebrew word "chomot", which means "wall"; "mot", which means "established" (in Ge'ez, "mot" means "death", probably because sacrifice was a way of establishing or ratifying covenants); "azab", which means to "restore" or "repair"; and "aseh", which means "make" or "do". In essence, the song seems to suggest that the Messiah was ordained to die as a propitiatory death for the sins of the children of Israel before reaching the 10 lost houses of Israel (and Yeshua died after 4000 thousand years of human history (of which 6000 is ordained before the return of the Messiah, based on James Ussher's analysis); and a double meaning is that before 7000 thousand years are reached, we will be restored and be able to worship again at Tsiyyon. Interestingly, there if you read the conclusion of Kant's famous work "Critique of Practical Reason", it makes reference to the same glorious promise that this Korean song makes reference to. According to Kant: "Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing wonder [Bewunderung] and reverence, the more often and more steadily one reflects on them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me. I do not need to search for them and merely conjecture them as though they were veiled in obscurity or in the transcendent region beyond my horizon; I see them before me and connect them immediately with the consciousness of my existence” (Critique of Practical Reason, 5: 161)." According to the versions of Arirang that were probably earliest, "As the heavens are replete with many stars, in my heart are many dreams". I believe both are referring to the promise made to Abraham: "“By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand, which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. And in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Genesis 22:16-18).
