I don't speak Korean, but this video moves me to tears every time I watch it. She is so unbelievably good. Once I learned the history behind the song from reading comments, it made her performance even more beautiful.

Arirang means a high and low mountain hills that Korean people must go over together, which are crisis of nation or every person. It is a Symbol of One Korea, all korean are one. Have good time~! I love Queen So Hyang.
She has that effect on everybody really, in almost every song. Communication perfection. She understands the song she is singing and how to design it. She is also probably the hardest worker on her singing and production you will every meet...and I mean she will put a 100 times more thinking and effort in preparing a song than anybody else. I mean even those notes you don't notice, she puts a little something into.
Arirang Song is a 600-year-old Korean traditional song. There are various versions of Arirang songs throughout Korea. In places where Koreans are scattered not only in Korea but also around the world, Arirang's songs spread like their souls, and ethnicities and tribes who had deep exchanges with Koreans can remember Arirang and sing the melody. Let's write down the representative Korean Arirang and its meaning. I feel sorry for my poor English because I turned to a translator, but I think it will be a good reference, so I take courage as a Korean and write it down. Type 1. Arirang, Arirang, Arari It goes over Arirang Pass. If you leave me behind, An outbreak occurs in less than ten miles. Arirang means "I love you so much that my heart aches," and this song can be seen as a one-sided love that only makes me nervous. "Ari" is heartbreaking and painful. 'Rang' refers to a lover. The hidden meaning of 'rang' is Korea. My beloved is leaving over that pass until my heart aches. The man who leaves me will develop an illness in less than ten miles This is not a curse for leaving him, but a very desperate love song for him to come back to him with a disease.
If you got emotional after listening to this music, try Everyone by her... You'll definitely cry, like a lot. Can't wait to see your reaction to Everyone!!
Wonderful reaction and analysis John. Don't worry about showing your emotions. I have easily heard this performance 100 times and it still brings tears to my eyes. "Arirang" is a very old Korean folk song with great significance to all of the Korean people. This nostalgic song was passed down from past generations, from a time when Korea was united, and is a simple life story of the Korean people. It speaks of love, sadness, farewells from loved ones, and overcoming hardships from Korean wars and other conflicts. It also speaks of the small happinesses found in everyday life, being as one in their hearts together, and hoping for a better future. This song could be viewed as an anthem of a united Korea. You can tell how important this song is to So Hyang. She put her heart and soul into her performance. She is absolutely an angel!
Awesome reaction. You need to check out Bridge Over Troubled Waters and You Raise Me Up as well. Her gospel background take both songs to a different level. Thank You
Hey John, I've only recently discovered your channel, and I want to thank you for your thoughtful, insightful, intellectual analysis. In a society so obsessed with only the emotional aspect of being human, it's refreshing to see someone using their God-given brain to analyze music on an intellectual, as well as emotional, level. Also, since I have taught both Physics and Anatomy, I personally enjoy your scientific explanations of both the physics of sound, and the anatomical portion as well. Finally, it's irrelevant if some are bothered by your pauses. First off, it's your channel and your content, so it's entirely your perogative what you do. Second, you are here to analyze music and explain the science behind it, so that implies periodic pauses to fulfill the purpose of your channel. And third, if some don't like your approach, they are free to go elsewhere. No one is forcing them to watch your channel. You owe no apologies or explanations for why and when you pause, so please continue to operate your channel according to its purpose. Those of us intelligent enough to see the deeper purpose thoroughly enjoy your approach. Be blessed brother!
Her vocals are soul-stirring beauty. In 'Arirang Alone' I hear So Hyang's moving identification with her listeners in what it means and feels to be Korean. This song and her manner of singing this song provides profound reconciliation of the past and present individual and collective Korean experience of 'Han.' Some use the Korean word 'Han' to refer to life under Japanese rule from 1910 to 1945. Many in younger generations use 'Han' to describe only depression, deep sorrow, resentment, or even hatred. The word means far more in Korean history, language, and literature. Long before the Japan-Korea treaty of 1876 began to diminish Korean culture, the word had meaning on the peninsula. 'Han' (and this song) is soulful acknowledgement of the past and any present difficulty but tied to assured hope; the overcoming of profound difficulty and a better future..even victory. Maybe a 'Han' philosophy propels many Koreans to work so hard to improve living. A western reflection of 'Han' might be heartfelt acknowledgement of the human condition (ie. experiencing the bleak abyss we lived in or now face but having assurance of reconciling the difficulty with a leap of faith to a better future).
The emotional journey she takes us on... incredible. Right there with you. This is definitely another favorite performance by So Hyang. Thank you for the analysis, John! Even the way she starts her performances is always so effortlessly heart-felt, I can't HELP but be moved. Ahhh, I absolutely love this singer. What a performance. Thank you again.
I’ve watched your reaction to this song so many times. I personally love how you break it down, the pauses don’t bother me at all. Keep doing what you do! 💕
this song mentions that “we become one”. Arirang is not our official anthem in korea but it is so close to our heart because it shows our spirit and mind of what we went through all the oppression and mistreatment,, thats is why you can see so hyang and the audience feeling so emotional:)
I love how emotional you got at the end. You're a sensitive soul. I'm glad you've discovered the wonder that is So Hyang, and I'm proud to be a recent subscriber.
I just got here and I don't understand why you don't have more subscribers, you explain everything SO WELL it's just amazing... This song is the one I always go when I wanna feel emotional, after knowing the meaning of the song it's even more emotional, So Hyang's voice is so pretty and powerful, her vocal flexibility is out of this world
Hi John, it is rare that I comment but this one I have to!! I got to know you via So Hyang reaction videos. As an amateur singer and a lover of music, I love the way you observe and verbalize the technicalities of singing! By far one of the best on UA-cam if not the best! But the way you truly differ from others is your ability to pick up the context and to sense deeper emotion that is very difficult to understand, let alone appreciate from traditional songs like this. Tougher without understanding the language. Yet your interpretation (by your emotion, I am carefully assuming what you must have felt) is more than spot on IMHO! I truly appreciate that and just wanted to thank you for that and for your expertise! We surely are proud of So Hyang!
So Hyang forever I love you So Hyang~^^ very very awesome~ perfect~ amazing!!!
I love how john smiles to So Hyang like she is his own proud student when she goes off. Out of all the reactors he is the most real feeling. Thank you, John.
What an inspirational voice! Sohyang is not just singing a song but telling a story by mixing different voice tones and using unrestricted voice notes. Every performance is a journey to a new amazing story. It's a God's blessing to all listeners. Best of the bests!!!
Another masterful reaction! Sorry to hear that your fabulous Fate reaction was taken down for copyright. MBC who owns the I Am A Singer 2 program is known to be really stingy on copyright. Immortal Song 2 is a KBS program, although it also keeps an watchful eye, it seems KBS gives a little more latitude based on the number of reactions videos I saw. Thank you for your wonderful feedback and pointed observations. I am always very fond of Sohyang's head mix - and your remark about it being "delicate but not weak" hits a spot for me. I always felt that Arirang Alone by Sohyang is her best example for seamless transition with its arrangement and execution. Also appreciate your comments on her vowel management to maintain the vocal intensity of the song. Your note on adjusting her delivery for rhythmic management is an insight I heard for the first time and makes a lot of sense to me. And I am touched when you smiled on her belt of the epic BB5 note. The ending compliment that you got wrapped up in her music and compelled to put a pause in watching Sohyang's performance with critical eyes is really the most sincere praise one could ask for. Often technical critique can be dry and obtuse to watch but I find myself chasing your comments one after another. Thanks for the video. Hope to see you again.
Oh, I was desperately searching for reactions to her Fate cover and found it weird that there were nothing. I see now that it was taken down, that's really too bad...
@@annieranai2198 That's really too bad. Sohyang's Fate on IAASS2 is such a signature performance that shows both her technical skills and emotive delivery, one for many to cherish and enjoy.
Wow. John, l’ve never seen you this emotional but I totally understand. I could listen to her singing a song 30 times and just cry 30 times. She absolutely connects to the audience through her heart and impeccable vocal skills. I love your reaction videos too.
I like your emphasis on communication. The story that she's telling is profound and touches the audience deeply. Arirang is a Korean traditional folk song. Perhaps it's THE traditional folk song that resonates with the feelings of all Koreans. The song she sings using vocal techniques from various western influences, resolves into the original Arirang melody 10:31. The lyrics also emphasise unity and solidarity in facing the future. She uses her voice to demonstrate a way forward, a way to advance in the modern global world, while properly respecting (and revivifying) the history and tradition that bore her. The old man in traditional garb 10:39, understands and nods in emotional approval. It is a spectacular celebration of history, union of cultures, and the possibilities of the future. Sohyang has distilled this into her person through her own experience and sacrifice, which is why she can tell this story so well. She's embodied the story she wants to communicate.
1. This is one of the best reaction slash analysis videos I've ever seen, ever, and I've seen many of them, especially on Sohyang. Your depth of knowledge, the genuine reaction, the emotion, I found them really enjoyable to watch. Kudos! You will do well and rise up quickly in the vocal teachers/reactors scene of UA-cam. 2. Thank you for not letting how zealous copyright enforcer took down your first Sohyang video discourages you from making another one. 3. Please, DO interrupt as much as you want, especially when you want to impart your knowledge. First, it will benefit you in strengthening your case vs the copyright cops. Secondly, I'm with the crowd that actually WANT to hear what you have to say. We are the crowd that KNOW how to look for the full performance if we want to hear an uninterrupted version. 4. Yup, I too have had my shares of shaking head, throwing my hands up, "I'm done", tears and smiles from Sohyang's performances. She does that to people. She's a communicator par excellence. 😁 (I've watched your "Fate" video before it got axed. Had you dragged MBC to court, your case would almost guaranteed an easy win under Fair Use, since you were actually making COMMENTARY and TEACHING, not just merely doing what other UA-camrs do, making awkward mandatory pauses and trying to offer some personal, even random at times, observations which are not related to what the singers are doing). Great video! Thank you!
I also like how you talk about the technical details of her singing unlike other reactors who just say “wow” or “amazing”. I really like to hear how she applies her knowledge and capabilities to her technique. Good video as well!!!
I love watching vocal coaches re-evaluate their lives while listening to SoHyang. If you're not in tears by the end of her "Bridge Over Troubled Water" or "You Raise Me Up" performances, you have no soul. The other thing you need to know is that she does all of the new arrangements for each song *herself.*
Absolutely amazing song obviously, and at the same time it's amazing reaction&analysis for the song. I truly love the moment when you noticed/realised some vocal technique she did such as 05:20, 10:25. A lot of thrilling and touching moments of course. Lots of, I mean, nah I can say 99% of reaction videos including ones from even vocal trainers didn't feel that much of the very moments of delicated&incredible technics throughout a song but just pretended to be touched in every single moments, or just reacted emotionally with saying like "her voice is good" thing. But I could enjoy watching your emotion changes. Anyway, beautiful song, and delightful reaction.
Teacher, i think that most of us followers really enjoy and learn from your comments. I personally appreciate your generosity, on explaining us patiently what's going on in the performance. Thank you so much in advance.
Aw, I love how you break down her vocal techniques both as a musician and also as an audience. I dont mind if you get excited and go all out discussing your techniques further into this video. Knowing people, they've already watch countless reactions to this same performance and always dont mind a different take on the reactionary side be it educational or how it resonates as a viewer. First time I watched this video, I definitely had a teary eye. One of my favorite So Hyang live performances.
❤️❤️❤️So much love Sohyang... and I have such deep respect for her talent and her person!! She is the queen of singers and Dimash is the king of singers to me 🙂❤️❤️❤️
When someone you love leaves for somewhere, you will see him off outside of the village. And then you just stand there and see him fade away as he walks over the hill. That is the Arirang hill they said
i am with the others, please don't apologize for frequent breaks, you're providing huge insight! I love watching vocal teachers react to this performance, I've always wondered why tears spring to my eyes when she does those higher parts, she has such a powerful way of evoking emotion through her voice. thank you!
It's a folk song that goes back around 600 years. There are 60 variations of the base song, with over 3600 versions identified. It started as a sad love song, and came to represent the sadness over the separation of North and South after ww2 and the Korean war.
Yes, the queen. So Hyang... her goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times. She is known for her emotive and powerful vocals and meticulous control. She's a cancer survivor and therefore cant have kids and is very vulnerable to diseases. She refused label contracts and sings mostly in churches or for charity and on special occasions, she is very humble and down to earth person which doesnt look for fame and money. Her showcased vocal range spans from D3 to A6 (consistent supported range from G#3 to E6), a total of three octaves, three notes and a semitone. Hope to see more, i would recommend "Bridge Over Trouble Water" "Monalisa" "Where Are You" I see a lot of people recommending "You Raise Me Up" just want to point it out that because of the chemo, her immunity is low so she's often sick, in that particular performance she had Pneumonia, and was told by the doctors she shouldn't even speak but she still went and chose to sing and gave that amazing performance.
Literally the best analyze of sohyang's voice so far I just loved the way you analyzed her, fair enough ♡ Please analyze her covers to lean on me and bridge over troubled water
She's absolutely my favorite not only because she's a top vocalist but she is a respectable person; she's humble and pure-hearted. I can't get out of her, nor do I want to.
hi John, i have to thank you so much for your professionell reactions/analysis, i´m 57 and know nearly nothing about singing...i grew up with rockbands like Queen, AC/DC, Whitesnake, Journey...etc.,.....but now in my 50´s i get a little sentimental and begin to love those really supersingers like Dimash or So Hyang...your reactions are very interesting for me and really helps me to understand some facts about singing...also love your emotional reaction to this song...very symphatic to me..i had tears in my eyes too, sorry for my bad english....a big hug from germany....take care
I've watched your reaction to this...masterpiece?...of a performance no less than a dozen times and it's so...cathartic in a weird way. The unabashed, honest way in which your feelings bubble up makes me emotional every time to a fuckin' vid that just on its *own* get me every time. Wish I could thumbs up each time I've clicked on this...you deserve more for your straightforwardness but all I can give you is the one:).
I really loved this entire reaction! You were fantastic and so was she! Please keep reacting to her! Her most amazing performance (for me) is called Everyone. Vocally and emotionally is really perfect. Perfect. She has other incredible performances. Everyone Bridge over troubled water You raise me up Where are you Dream (her own song) Lean on me I have nothing (whitney houston) Oh holy night and more!!
So Hyang also did the arrangement of this traditional Korean folk song. She has also taught vocals at a top Korean university. So Hyang is the total human and spiritual embodiment of music. Enjoy your new journey in her musical world.
i rarely comment on videos but i have to say this is the best reaction video i have come across. Your technical knowledge of what she does is precise and i have come to appreciate Sohyang's talent even more after listening to you commenting on it. She is truly a treasure in the musical world. My good Sir thank you for the well made analysis and heart felt emotion. I too was brought to tears listening to this performance.
Watching So-Hyang and people's reaction all around the world, just shows what the music is, the ultimate universal language. Because through music, her words "musically" reaches to people's heart, as she did mine.
The emotion she has is so raw and you end up crying by the end of the song. It's rare when a person can touch you so strongly with a song. They can have to most beautiful voice but without the emotion as you talked about, it just doesn't reach you all the way where your literally in tears. There was happiness, sadness, and they were so intense. It feels you up and the tears start flowing. Thank you for reacting to this performance. It's been one of my favorites for years. There's only less than a handful of songs that make me cry just from hearing them.
Its a blessing to know Sohyang l. She never stop giving you goosebump, make you tear up, and sometimes, she rock your world :) Anyway please react to Sohyang “you raise me up 2018”
Please react to "You Raise Me Up" on Immortal Songs 2. She sang that with Pneumonia and you would have never known! Definitely a great song for a vocal coach to see. Soooo much technique.
I know NOTHING about music, but I KNEW Sohyang was different! I really enjoyed your expertise and how you spoke about the techniques!!! It was interesting to hear how amazing it was on a technical level!
You know that Sohyang is a truly epic singer when she gets such a technical man in tears. Dear sir, PLEASE react to Sohyang. Can you do Lean On Me at Immortal Songs 2 next please
Your reaction is by far the best reaction of Sohyang's Arirang among I've seen. It's not only detailed, kind, and super professional but also your emotional tie to the song shows how much you were concentrated in analyzing this song with your brain and heart at the same time. You did such a great job, and I'm so glad to find this video. I will share one of the choir teachers around me who'd be interested in seeing your great analysis. Personally, I'm Korean and am very in love with Sohyang as she shared her talent to sing Arirang. Thank you for this video!
It is a beautifully staged story, where everything is a great aesthetic ensemble, sets, violins; the violinist is fantastic and ... especially in the center of the performance, Sohyang's voice and personality is shining. When I first heard it I was thrilled, friend John
Ignore the people who complain about pausing. Honestly pausing is part of why these vocal coach vids are great!! I like hearing praise for her insane technique, and learning a bit of something.....like that's why we watch these videos!! I don't understand ppl who complain about that, this was a great video!!!! =)
This is a phenomenal breakdown and by far my favorite 'vocal coach reacts' video on Sohyang yet. I can see others have already communicated this, but you have to know that commentary of your caliber (i.e your focus on the anatomy of her technique, the emotional impact as an extension of the techniques she chooses) is very rare. I wanted you to interject MORE because every time you did, the analysis was just as riveting as the performance. ... More, actually, not only because I've watched this particular performance enough times on my own to not require lengthy reverent silences from you, but more so because your analysis helped me appreciate gems that I'd never even noticed in it before, like the emphasis on the third consecutive high note that she throws in at 10:24. Even if all that wasn't enough, your reactions were so heartfelt and genuine that it brought me to tears all over again. Amazing video and amazing content overall -- thank you!!!
Please don't let comments discourage you from stopping as frequently as you would like to provide analysis. You are one of the few vocal coaches out there providing actual in-depth analysis of how vocalists are producing the sounds that they are and it is one of the biggest appeals of your videos, to my mind.

It goes over Arirang Pass.
If you leave me behind,
An outbreak occurs in less than ten miles.
The man who leaves me will develop an illness in less than ten miles
This is not a curse for leaving him, but a very desperate love song for him to come back to him with a disease.
If you got emotional after listening to this music, try Everyone by her... You'll definitely cry, like a lot. Can't wait to see your reaction to Everyone!!
Everson Lima “Everyone” is the masterpiece among masterpieces, totally agree with you.
크~~~땡큐 리마
I also instantly thought of Everyone when he got emotional 😂😂 Everyone gets me emotional all the timeee ;;
Even after watching this performance many times over... that ending is so moving each and every time.
You are not only a good voice teacher but also an excellent English teacher.
Thanks for your shaing of your knowledge.
Thank you John Courtright
@John Courtright your description and meaning of the lyrics was the most accurate and eloquent I've seen. So beautifully written. Thank you.

Awesome reaction. You need to check out Bridge Over Troubled Waters and You Raise Me Up as well. Her gospel background take both songs to a different level. Thank You
I think this is one of the best song technique explanations I have seen.

This song is the one I always go when I wanna feel emotional, after knowing the meaning of the song it's even more emotional, So Hyang's voice is so pretty and powerful, her vocal flexibility is out of this world
ㅋㅋㅋ 진짜 자세한분석 감사드립니다~ ♡ 소향 이버젼 넘조음 ♡ Thank you for your wonderfnl reaction ~♡💕
Thank you!
One of my favorite artists; she's quite amazing!
(I've watched your "Fate" video before it got axed.
Thank you!
You can see how ur slowly falling in love with her and the song 😍 was the same with me when I heard it the first time
more than anything, your passion for singing can be felt over the screen and it's so wonderful to see
John, your reaction reflects how I feel every time I hear this amazing lady sing. She is a gift to humanity. God bless. ❤
that little note at the end really hits you in "the feels"
She is one of the few singers who can make me cry, too. You are not alone.
That last part though… so emotional .. ugh. 🥺❤️
아직까지 본 어느 분석보다 뛰어나네. 그리고 최고의 찬사는 여러 감성을 가지고 있다는 거 같네. 테크닉이고 소통이고 뭐 이런건 다들 아는 사실이잖아.
She is the BEST!!!
Whenever I watch and hear her sing "You Rise Me Up", it remind me of Matthew 5:13-16 in the Bible.
Thank you for your sincere reaction.
That is the Arirang hill they said
코로나만 아니었으면 이 분한테 노래 레슨 받으러 가보고 싶다
i am with the others, please don't apologize for frequent breaks, you're providing huge insight!
소향씨 덕에 많이 울었어요 힘들때마다 나의 위로가 됬네요 고맙습니다
1, 2,3 1,2,3 thats korean traditional cadence. its cool that u noticed it right away. prob hearing korean folk song for the first time.
I love when vocal coaches get excited listening to So Hyang
Literally the best analyze of sohyang's voice so far
I just loved the way you analyzed her, fair enough ♡

She's absolutely my favorite not only because she's a top vocalist but she is a respectable person; she's humble and pure-hearted. I can't get out of her, nor do I want to.
Do you know?
She is THE QUEEN .
hi John, i have to thank you so much for your professionell reactions/analysis, i´m 57 and know nearly nothing about singing...i grew up with rockbands like Queen, AC/DC, Whitesnake, Journey...etc.,.....but now in my 50´s i get a little sentimental and begin to love those really supersingers like Dimash or So Hyang...your reactions are very interesting for me and really helps me to understand some facts about singing...also love your emotional reaction to this song...very symphatic to me..i had tears in my eyes too, sorry for my bad english....a big hug from germany....take care
Thank you!
I really loved this entire reaction! You were fantastic and so was she! Please keep reacting to her! Her most amazing performance (for me) is called Everyone. Vocally and emotionally is really perfect. Perfect. She has other incredible performances.

I really enjoy your genuine reaction and great explanation of her vocal technique :)
Thank you!
Watching So-Hyang and people's reaction all around the world, just shows
what the music is, the ultimate universal language.
Wow. Her voice is beautiful. My eyes are leaking like a sieve. The power of her voice combined with the meaning of the song. 😭😭😭😭
Thanks for your reaction.
Plz. React "everyone". She said "the song was the most hardist song in my life."
And plz react lean on me.
Its a blessing to know Sohyang l. She never stop giving you goosebump, make you tear up, and sometimes, she rock your world :)
Anyway please react to Sohyang “you raise me up 2018”
My grandma used to sing this while she was sewing. This reminds me of her. 😢
Please react to "You Raise Me Up" on Immortal Songs 2. She sang that with Pneumonia and you would have never known! Definitely a great song for a vocal coach to see. Soooo much technique.
Thats song is final!
I know NOTHING about music, but I KNEW Sohyang was different! I really enjoyed your expertise and how you spoke about the techniques!!! It was interesting to hear how amazing it was on a technical level!
More so hyang videos pls! it's lovely
I cried to this. Thank you so much for teaching us. Ms. So Hyang is really amazing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
You Raise Me Up will make you cry, not that you're trying to, but the emotions she emits and envokes. Wow! Bridge Over Troubled Water I love also!
Can't believe people want you not to stop as much. I love hearing about the technical side of things as well as seeing your reaction.
Thank you for your analysis. Learning something new every time I listen to your analysis
i love how deeply it affected you and how emotional it made you. that was my reaction
