Didn’t expect to wake up this morning, pour myself a cup of coffee, randomly click on this video and then become SUPER jealous!! But I’m impressed and this is a dream workshop. I do love all the windows because my “shop” is my 70 year old garage with no windows with a hodge podge of entry level power tools and hand me downs. Cheers.
You got that right! I find myself regularly pushing around my mobile workbenches so that I can take in more natural light and enjoy a view of the outdoors as I work.
Wow, thank you so much!!! I must have laid out the tools +4x in sketch up before I even agreed to the overall footprint size of the shop. But then I threw myself a curveball by going with the shed roof and of course some tools want way more space to flip boards end for end. I would have loved to have had the jointer closer to the table saw but I like having the high ceiling with the jointer so that I can flip boards and have that tool cut with the grain.
Thanks!!! The carriage doors are so beautiful!!! I can't believe I ordered paint grade and got these! They were so worth the time of doing the multiple coats of spar varnish myself. The Ron Paulk miter station has been fantastic. I love all the length on it. I bought his plans and adapted it to my space since I didn't need it to be portable. I've loved having a high work surface that I can clamps to anywhere. I don't keep the open void space very organized and it can get kind of messy, but I really like its functionality. I have the fences removable in case I want more bench workspace. I've definitely taken them off for time to time. I've also seen and like the idea of using a thicker top material and recessing the track for the miter saw, so that it is there when you want it and no need to remove it when you want a wide workbench.
Sounds like we should jump into a conversation then. So far I'm just offering one on one classes because I don't have permanent ducting up for dc. Reach out if you think this is something you want to do in the next year and we can start thinking about when it might fit on both of our schedules and other details.

I think so too! So fun that we share a last name and spell it the same! They were more successful selling cows to miners for food than ever finding gold. I'm definitely enjoying my new shop and I like it will keep getting better with time as I build out more organization.
EXCELLENT EYE!! I've been building this sideboard for a while and my pieces kept cupping. Plus I build furniture very slowly. So I made those cauls out of some squared up 2x4's. I've since had to remake the panels as my boards would not stay flat (it was from wood that I milled up from a tree in my backyard and air dried). I've now remade all of those pieces out of plywood with shop sawn veneer as I'm really attached to making this piece of furniture for our house out of wood from our house. The long caul has been a great reference surface as I didn't have a work bench long enough to build this piece on. Plus I think it will really aid the glue up when it comes time for that.
I couldn't agree with you more. I'm not sure how I got this lucky but I'm very thankful that I get to work in such a beautiful space. Thanks for your support.
I totally agree with you. I'm so glad my architect pitched this design. It fits our mid century modern house architecture so well. It feels like this additional was always part of the original house. And it frames our backyard so nicely. I definitely take time to just enjoy it.
Thank you!! I really lucked out on being able to buy this house when it came on the market in 2019. The previous homeowners had done such a nice job with the house architecture and the yard landscaping. It just didn't have a big shop like I wanted. From there I got connected with an architect and he came up of the grand idea of adding so many windows and using the shed roof like the rest of our MCM house. So now it looks like the shop has always been on our property and let's me take in so much natural light and all of our nice landscaping (many of the windows mirror the location on the house).
Thanks so much Glen! I feel lucky that my shop is situated such that it was possible to take in so much natural light. I definitely enjoy taking in the day through the windows as I build furniture.
Thanks so much! I definitely push my mobile benches around so I can work in sunspots. It feels so good to take in the natural pace of the day with all the windows.
Glad to see you made natural light/windows a priority. I see a lot of shop builds without windows. It would drive my crazy not having windows in my shop. I'm with you all the way on sacrificing storage space for more windows. Great layout and design. Cheers

Suddenly, I've discovered since moving into this shop there is sun then what I had experienced my previous 5 winters combined. I was just missing those little moments because I didn't have windows. It has been nice taking my time, moving tools around. Now that I've been in the space for almost 2 years, I am starting to get eager to want to put in some permanent ducting for dust control, but I'm not looking forward to all of the research that goes into deciding which unit I should purchase. Thanks for the super kind comment.

If I had a blank sheet of paper to design the perfect shop.....I would freeze up. I need obstacles and fixed hurdles to work around. I like the way you are taking your time to position tools just as you want them.
I started out with a wish list when I first met with the architect to design the shop. I wanted 10' ceiling somewhere in the shop to flip boards over and for vertical storage. I wanted lots of power as I hope to run classes with 2 or 3 students (so that is kind of unique for a home shop) so more power had to get connected to our house. I wanted about a 4 car garage foot print with on "bay" turned into a clean space for storage or being about to do finishing work. Then my architect pitched the idea of the shed roof as it mirrors our house. He also added a similar window layout as our house. Tools quickly picked their locations based on where windows were located and ceiling height. The fine tuning of tool locations has come by using the space and having enough power in the shop that it is easy to try moving a tool and that I can still easily plug it in. At this point tools still tend to move a foot or two in most directions if I'm working on a big projects. I'm hoping that in the next year I can start to add permanent ducting for dc now that I know the shop is functioning well.
Love the windows and those massive doors to the garden! I already saw your shop in Fine Woodworking Magazine earlier this month, and today this shows up in my UA-cam feed!
Glad you like them! It was my architect who came up with idea to add so many windows as it repeats the window spacing of our house. It really frames our patio by having a giant "L" that mirrors itself. I had no idea how much I would love having an abundance of natural light. So fun that you first read my FWW article and then UA-cam shared this with you. I actually took the video of this shop tour right after my FWW editor left after the photoshoot back in June. How well the giant carriage doors came out, went way beyond my hopes for them! I had never been around 6' wide doors, so it was all new to me but I loved the way garage doors look with this window grid pattern, so when we found a local company that makes custom carriage doors... I was eager to work with them. I asked for paint grade and then they delivered VG fir (which is how may entire house is trimmed out. So naturally I added spar varnish to them to show off all that tight wood grain.
The Paulk style miter bench has been awesome. I bought his plans and adapted it to my space since I didn't need it to be portable. I've loved having a high work surface that I can clamps to anywhere. I don't keep the open void space very organized and it can get kind of messy, but I really like its functionality. I have the fences removable in case I want more bench workspace. Thanks for the super kind comment. Oh, that could been a great video topic. Thanks for planting the seed for that video idea. The shop, definitely mirrors the architecture of our house and that would be something fun to show off.
Thanks for the kind comment! This shop really has become my happy place! I so enjoy spending my time in there, even if it is just cleaning. And it is a great way to merge my hobby of vegetable gardening and a chance to really taken in all of the landscaping in the yard. There is something special about being able to track the weather and sun all day.
That is awesome!!! I felt super lucky to get a feature article in FWW. It all came from filling a spot out on their website of potential article ideas. Such a big career milestone!
Thanks so much. I know I jumped in a lot more with the overall aesthetics/architecture of the shop then a typical shop build. But being in such an inspiring space adds a lot of joy to working in my shop.
@@McIntyreFurniture I totally get it as we built a brand new shop last year with a lot of the same things ( lots of windows ) large open spaces and a finishing room
@@northernhumidor5615 That is awesome!!! I bet you enjoy every moment in that new shop of yours. Day light and nature are so nice to take in with lots of windows. And having room to move around is so valuable.
Nice shop. I love the space - so much light! Nice to see the re-purposed cabinets having a second light. At 3:41 you missed an important tool. It's been a while since I have seen a hand crank pencil sharpener. You should contact Ron P. he features Paulk based shops on his channel.
Thanks so much for the nice comment! All the sudden with all the window the grey winter that the Seattle area is known for, I'm realizing that there are lots of sun spots. All the natural light definitely helps me get through the long winter. I just sent Ron Paulk a message on his website, thanks so much for that tip as I had no idea that he featured stuff like this on his channel. I bought his plans back in 2015 when I had a different garage shop and made his mobile miter bench into this permanent one. I was so happy with it that it came with me when I set up this shop. The pencil sharpener has been a terrific addition to my shop! And I love going old school with it and it being hand crank. Plus I've sharpened a few dowels along the way for random things so it gets more use than you would think. Have a great day!
@@McIntyreFurniture Hopefully Ron will feature your shop soon! The customized Paulk bench is a nice twist on his original idea - and the setting of your awesome shop a real jewel.
Sweet shop! As far as your dust collector, keep it as close as possible to your major dust and chip producers. You mentioned the corner by your plywood storage, without putting it out side, that looks like the best spot. Again, really nice setup, love all the windows!!
Great input! My tools have for the most part settled into locations. I still seem to move them around a bit (for the most part it is just a foot or two if I'm working with really long stock). It has been great taking almost two years to get to know the space and get it organized before doing permanent ducting. But of course I'm tired of moving my flex hose around so I'm ready to contemplate buying a bigger dust collector and putting up my ducting. I agonize over purchases so I'm not looking forward to doing the research to decide which dc I should purchase. The windows have been such a delightful part of my shop experience now. I love taking in the day as I get to woodwork.
Thanks for checking out my shop tour video. I’ve now been in this space for three years and I try to enjoy each moment a little extra in this beautiful shop.
I still can't believe I get to woodwork in such a nice shop! I definitely take time to just enjoy it. It was a cool process to design a space that wasn't just functional but inspirational. Thanks for taking the time to check out my video. Thanks Nick for the kind words. I have a ton to learn when it comes to making videos and you are totally right about the volume level. What bums me out is that I used a mic for this and just thought I would be good to go. Thanks for the helpful video editing tip.
@@McIntyreFurniture Not a problem at all! I am out in Carnation by the way. Your shop is amazing! Audio is always trick. Bad audio can make a great video horrible. Something for you to remember, when you edit your videos, go by the audio meters and where the audio registers, not how it sounds coming out of your speakers! :)
it's a beautiful - love how it's light and airy, unlike most dark-age dungeon woodworking shops i see what are the outside dimensions (of the building)? god bless and good luck, looking forward to following your work :)
Thank you! I've definitely spent plenty of time in wood shops that didn't have any windows. It does give you more room to hang things on the wall. But I am loving all the natural day light. The inside shop space is 44' x 21', basically a 4 car garage footprint. You should check out my follow up video on this one where I go into a few things in greater detail.
You made me re-subscribe to Fine Woodworking! Well done with your shop! I am about to embark on this journey and build a larger shop on my property. I didn't hear your overall dimensions. I started to try and count sheets of plywood, but I thought I would just ask! I love the light and I plan to do much the same. I also love using plywood on the walls, but the black screws with the grommets look great!
Wow! I didn't know that I had that level of influence! I too love my subscription to FWW. My shop is basically a 4 car garage footprint. On the inside of the building it is 44' x 21'. I just started a new saved/Highlighted Stories on my Instagram feed called Shop Details. I even took a close up picture of the screws I used on the plywood. Check it out over at @mcintyrefurniture. instagram.com/mcintyrefurniture/
I know, it is a bit ridiculous having such a nice woodworking shop. More money went into it to have so many comforts but it does leave me feeling super inspired and I love spending time in there. If it helps, it took a lot of baby steps to get to this point. I started out in community shops for years, just bringing my projects in every day to work on. I saved all my funds to eventually buy nice new tools. That got to happen after my spouse and I stopped moving around and bought our first house. I crammed as many tools as I could into that two car garage. I almost had no walkways. And only a small north facing window. I still can't believe I had the chance to build this shop and I definitely do my best to fully enjoy it.
I feel totally lucky to have such a nice shop. I definitely spend time just enjoying it. I also have plenty of ideas as time allows to keep improving on it.
@@McIntyreFurniture that's the fun part of growing in your space! I live on 9 acres in the coastal redwoods of Northern California. I feel so lucky to roll up my shop doors and have such a tranquil place to work. You Def have to cherish the moments
Thanks for the kind words. It is kind of common for me to end my sentences at a higher note, not sure why I do that because I'm not trying to ask as question. The finishing room has been awesome!
I got the brass drawer pulls on my hand tool cabinet from Lee Valley. www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/hardware/pulls/ring/40224-forged-flush-rings Product 00L0101 They are nice because they are flus and I never run into them (this is very common in boat hardwood if you want to search for more options) and they are never in the way of clamps when I can this tool cabinet as the base of a work bench. The pulls are a bit tiny if you have really thick/wide fingers, but this is what fit my drawer fronts. The hand tool cabinet came from build plans that was in Fine Woodworking Magazine.
What a great shop space! Not only do you have all the tools you need to create beautiful things you also have all that natural light for when we have sunny days. One question, what are your floors made of? Mine are concrete and killed my back until I put 3/4” foam panda down everywhere.
Thanks Chris! I'm certainly enjoying the new shop space. I find myself rolling my mobile workbench into sunspots to enjoy working. You are welcome to come check out the space, it is always fun to talk about shop design and tools.
I realized I never answered you question. My floors are concrete. I have a few fatigue mats that I move around the shop to wherever I’ll be working. I tend to wear really comfy tennis shoes in the shop as well. So far my back, knees and feet have not given me any issues.
Beautiful space. I'm planning on building a shed roof style shop as well, I find the design so pleasing to work in. Can I ask the size of the shop in total and how much you dedicate to the interior room as well?
Thanks so much Eric for taking the time to enjoy my video bd check out my shop. That is fun that we both enjoy the shed roof architecture. My shop space is 44’ x 21’, 924 sq ft, which is essentially a 4 car garage. I think the dedicated room is 18’ x 10’.

Love the Paulk style mitre area, I’ve thought about doing it many times but seeing this has convinced me to give it a go.
I've definitely taken them off for time to time. I've also seen and like the idea of using a thicker top material and recessing the track for the miter saw, so that it is there when you want it and no need to remove it when you want a wide workbench.
Real nice space.
Much appreciated! It was a really cool space to design and I truly love being in there and making furniture.
Great video, awesome shop! Would love to see more of the architecture of the shop-a full walk around of the outside.
Thanks for the super kind comment. Oh, that could been a great video topic. Thanks for planting the seed for that video idea. The shop, definitely mirrors the architecture of our house and that would be something fun to show off.
Nice shop!
Thank you! I definitely cherish having such an inspiring and well equipped shop.
A next level shop always has something beautiful right outside! Love the windows, love the overall layout. #happyplace
Sweet shop
Thanks you!!
Saw your shop in the fine woodworking magazine. Very nice
That is awesome!!! I felt super lucky to get a feature article in FWW. It all came from filling a spot out on their website of potential article ideas. Such a big career milestone!
@@McIntyreFurniture what issue is it?
@@jeremyspecce Issue #300. FWW annual issue of Tools & Shops.
Beautiful shop.
Just wow!
Thanks for checking out my shop tour video. I’ve now been in this space for three years and I try to enjoy each moment a little extra in this beautiful shop.
Wow. My dream
I still can't believe I get to woodwork in such a nice shop! I definitely take time to just enjoy it. It was a cool process to design a space that wasn't just functional but inspirational. Thanks for taking the time to check out my video. If you want more of an official write up of the space it got featured in Fine Woodworking Magazine in their annual edition of Shops and Tool.

Yeah this is a nice space
Thank you! I’ve now been in the space for three years and I still feel so fortunate and lucky to work in this beautiful space.
Great video and great article! In the future, boost your audio mix in your video as I had to crank up my speakers to be able to hear you. :)
I hear it perfectly.
it's a beautiful - love how it's light and airy, unlike most dark-age dungeon woodworking shops i see
what are the outside dimensions (of the building)?
god bless and good luck, looking forward to following your work :)

Not jealous at all!!
Not a bad setup!
@@NosillaWilla that sounds like an excellent spot for a shop!
Great space!
Much appreciated! The space still feels so new to me but I’m definitely enjoying it and get more organized in the space.
Amazing shop!! It sounded like you were finishing room was more of a question than a statement.. I have a finishing room?
Thanks for the kind words. It is kind of common for me to end my sentences at a higher note, not sure why I do that because I'm not trying to ask as question. The finishing room has been awesome!
The beautiful brass drawer pulls. Can u tell me where they came from please. Great shop. Windows / setting is awesome
I got the brass drawer pulls on my hand tool cabinet from Lee Valley.
www.leevalley.com/en-us/shop/hardware/pulls/ring/40224-forged-flush-rings
Product 00L0101
They are nice because they are flus and I never run into them (this is very common in boat hardwood if you want to search for more options) and they are never in the way of clamps when I can this tool cabinet as the base of a work bench. The pulls are a bit tiny if you have really thick/wide fingers, but this is what fit my drawer fronts. The hand tool cabinet came from build plans that was in Fine Woodworking Magazine.
Thank you so much. They ship to Australia.
Excellent!
So far my back, knees and feet have not given me any issues.
inspiring!
It is a fantastic space! So much daylight! I find that I move my mobile benches to work in various sunspots.
My shop space is 44’ x 21’,
924 sq ft, which is essentially a 4 car garage. I think the dedicated room is 18’ x 10’.
Wow
just wondering how big your workshop is ?
It is basically a 4 car garage. 44' x 21', 924 soft. I think my storage/finishing room is 18' x 10' (1 stall of the four car garage).
OMG at first I thought when did Michael Jackson have a shop... lol lol my volume was real low when I first started the video and that's what it sounded like lol
Ha!!! That is super funny! I wish I had known the volume was so low when I made this video live. Oh well, I guess that can only mean that I'll get better at editing videos if I keep posting them.
@@McIntyreFurniture lmao no! My volume was down lol, the last video I watched was loud lol.... but what a beautiful shop, I'm definitely putting more windows in mine!
@@ryananthony4840 I've definitely had previous shop spaces without much natural light. Now that I have it, wow is it nice. You are going to love your shop space even more with some more windows.
No sound to your video ?
I narrate the whole tour. I am using a gentle voice so you may have to turn the volume up.
@@McIntyreFurniture that's the first thing a viewer will do. But it's no good even on full volume
