Did this job today. Tools needed:
Copper tube (24mm diameter, 100mm length, from eBay)
5mm x 35mm pop rivet (X2)
Rivet gun
35mm M5 bolt with self tightening nut
Metal hacksaw
Metal file
Drill and 5mm metal drill bit
5mm metal washer (X5)
I created a simple jig from scrap wood to drill the pipe and umbrella arm. My holes were not very straight but it didn't matter in the end.
Whole job took me about an hour as someone with very little experience.
Thanks again for the video.
You're Welcome!!! 😊

I fixed mine because of this video, but I didn't use rivets, I used a thin bolt with a nut. Worked great..

Thanks a bunch for the very easy to follow instructions. As a dunce when it comes to fixing things I'm happy to report that I fixed my patio umbrella using your method with relative ease. And you helped me save $250, the money I would have spent on a new umbrella!

Thank you. I just got an Umbrella and left it open in the wind. Two braces broke and I don't want to use duct tape cause I know that won't last and give enough. I will do this with my neighbors help. This is a super sized umbrella too.

Nice tip!!
Grandpadew Thanks!
awesome buddy thank you
You're Welcome!
Good idea!
I haven't ran into this problem yet but I'll keep it in mind. My problem is the broken hinge thingy where the pole bends to put the umbrella at a certain angle. I don't think fixing it will be that big of a deal, it's getting the round hinge thing off that's probably gonna be the pain!

brianmcdrummer Will do, thank you!
You're Welcome! :)
What a great video! We do not have a rivet tool. Would using 2 screws in place of the rivets, possibly work?
Hey Nicole, Thank You! The screws will hold the arms together but the umbrella won't be able to close all of the way because the head of the screw and the nut to hold the screw on will get in the way of the umbrella arms. :)
The hole for the short rib is still intact but I lost about 2 1/4 inches of length on the long one below the half a hole it has left. Can I use a 12" slip and drill 5 holes so the splice ends don't pivot? And what size pipe did you use? I flattened a 7/8 and it looks like I could have gone smaller, like 3/4
Hey Julia! I’m not exactly sure what size copper I used. I intentionally didn’t put the size because they’re all shapes and sizes of patio umbrellas. It may be best to take the umbrella to a hardware store and have them size it for you. Unless of course you’re happy with the way it’s working after you fixed it. Hope this helps! 😊
yo... Thanks Man!
You're welcome Super Pro Stoneworks!
I am going to try this right now. What about the string, any suggestions. Mine stop winding and now it will not lock/stay put
I'm not sure what to tell you about the string. I haven't run into that problem. Hope it works for you! :)
Great video. My arm broke at the hinge part. The broken arm is a little bent but I hope I can straighten it out somehow. Any tips for that? Also my arm is square instead of oval. Would an oval copper pipe still work? Thanks!
Mine too!!
I don't know how I missed this. You've probably already figured out how to repair it but I believe you can purchase towel bar that is square and maybe that would work.
Our parasol broke in the wind. Te damage is the small wire that holds all the arms that allows the parasol to exted if that make sense. Any tips?
Hey MrTonyheaney, I would see if you can get a replacement wire. :)
I'm hopeless at DIY but I need brownie points with the wife. My broken arm oval is 18mm legth. what diameter of copper pipe would I need to make this a good overlapping fit?
Haha Niall! I’m not exactly sure what size copper pipe you would need. The best thing to do is to go to a home-improvement store with your measurement and they should be able to help you.
Are most umbrella arms (ribs) the same diameter? Thank you
Some of them are made out of wood so no they are not all the same. As far as the metal ones I'm really not sure.
Dumb question, but do you think an umbrella would still work if I removed an arm? Strange shaped deck so it's the only way it would fit. Many thanks! Great video 😀
Hey Lisa! Thank you! I'm not really sure but you could always try. I guess you could always reattach the arm if it doesn't work. Good Luck! :)
brianmcdrummer thanks so much!
You're Welcome Lisa! :)
The wind catches mine too bad when I tilt it so since the pivot point has a stripped screw anyway I'm going to try flex taping it in place straight up
Yep. I got one up now with a broken rib. Trying to learn the best way to fix it. Oh, and I'm still looking for a good solid base that won't allow my umbrella to tip over! 😂
do you ship to Chile
Sorry Aaron Dunwald but this is a video showing how to fix the umbrella. I don't actually fix them. Sorry again :)
What size copper pipe did you use?
Hey Reginald, I think mine was 1/2" :)
