Fast moving thunderstorm winds caught our new $130 patio umbrella and damaged one of the arms of the frame. I was not ready to pay the same amount of money just for the same thing to happen again so I looked online for a repair kit. After not finding a repair kit, I stumbled upon a couple of repair videos but thought that they missed some information so I decided to record my take at repairing my umbrella for you to hopefully understand how to fix your own. It was hard filming this effort by myself but I hope it helps you. The effort could take less than an hour if you have all the tools needed and not have to video. The tools needed include:
    Arrow Rivet Tool- amzn.to/2ut4xSA
    Arrow Rivets -amzn.to/2tv6XvI
6inch long ¾ inch diameter copper tube
    Drill
    Drill bits
    Pencil
2.4 inch bolt and matching nut with 3 washers
    Measuring tape
    Hammer
Beer may or may not be helpful : )

I'm wondering if one could skip the rivet gun / rivets and simply use three screws / washers with the copper pipe (?) Thanks!

That may be a possibility. Let me know if that works.

The other way can’t be to crimp the copper pipe to snugly fit inside the break, epoxy it in place, and only redrill through it for the replacement pivot bolt… No paint touch up needed!

Slide a cardboard pizza box top up between the fabric and the rib repair for a mask and dust it in with the right spray paint color and you’re golden

Did same repair on mine, I found that taking the material off made fixing it easy and only takes a minute to take of
You need 3 holes in the pipe, instead of rivets, 3mm screw or bolt, 6 washers and 3 nuts.
Insert bolt into middle hole the insert the broken spurs. push the broken spur (the one still attached to the the frame) in to thd pipe untill it hits middle screw, use a bit of tape and tape the pipe to the spur, do the same for other side
You can then drill through the holes in the copper pipe and through the spur
If you don't have rivets and a gun then screws will also work
As a precaution I added 3in copper pipe with 1 hole in middle, to reinfoce that joint on each spur
Drll out the rivet and replace rivets with nut and bolt
Doesn't take to long to do this mod, and you'll never have to worry about it knowing that this fault will never happen again

Nice job ! Now, for anyone taking the California umbrellas UPPER HUB apart, DON'T put it on a table or workbench [like I did] you must work on this thing when it's vertical, otherwise the pins love to fall out.
Before disassembling, remove your fabric cover, obviously. Important: A dab of wite-out on the top, round plastic cover [with the screws] and the hub to mark the original positions/alignment will be very helpful for when reassembling too. Then, I suggest putting something under this whole assembly, as the pins STILL love to fall out... suggest an old rug or bed sheet to find your dropped pins.
When you remove the screws holding the top cover, keep in mind the hub will want to suddenly slide down. A piece of tape or a big tie wrap or better yet large rubber bands will help to temporarily hold it up in place. I then replaced my missing pin and reassembled the umbrella.

Thanks for the advice! I hope others will read this! Thank you for the comment and compliment!

Ideally if you intend to undo the top or midlde hub it's easyer if you have someone to hold the umbrella while you work on it. On mine the top plastic cap unsrews, allowing removal of fabric, this is all done with the umbrella closed. You then have access to the top hub screws
Very important, as mentioned don't lay it down to work on, make sure it's upright. what I did was use string (or gaffer tape) tie around all the spurs, this stopped the hub from moving down (still need to be cautious the pins don't come out), or get someone to hold it (this is the better option)
As mentioned be careful that non of the pins come out,
      Fabric
If fabric is dirty you can wash it since you have it
Or you can buy new fabric if the old one is beyond saving
Before taking fabric of the umbrella measure from the tip of one spure to the middle, also not number of spurs
I found new replacement fabric on ebay

really good advice . I've been wondering how to fix my 2 that have the same problem . But what size are the bolts , washers , & rivets , or for those of us who don't know , how do I measure those to get the sizes I need ? Although yours looks like the exact size I have .

    • @BrianRobinsonCoaching
      @BrianRobinsonCoaching  3 роки тому

    • @BrianRobinsonCoaching
      @BrianRobinsonCoaching  4 роки тому

I believe so if you drill holes for the rivets. The copper should protect the wood just as well and the rivets would hold the copper to the wood...so...I think so. Please don't hold me liable if it doesn't work 🙄😳😉😄. Good question. I think I will look for a broken wood one to try it.
