    What we're seeing here is the muscle car boom of the last few decades, but moved from the Boomer idol cars to the Millennial hero cars.
    The PlayStation generation are now at a point with disposable income and a hunger for "the good old days" and really want to own their favourite GTR from GT2, the Civics they saw driving around when they were young, and the E36 that gives them 90s vibes.
    Very true on the biased information at the start.

      Super well said. I come from a little before the Playstation generation and everything you've described is my life lol. I've owned a few 240s over the years and they were great when they were cheap to buy. Prices now are insane. I was lucky enough to purchase a clean S14 from a kid who really didn't know what we had. He basically gave the car away to with the price I bought it for. Will probably never sell it just because these cars are becoming much more valuable as time passes and everytime one gets bashed, wrecked into walls, and abandoned.

There's nothing more that I hate than somebody buying a 90's JDM and then sitting on it, not driving it and letting it collect dust, and then selling it for more. I once knew a guy who purchased a Evo 8 before he got married and proceeded to let it collect dust in his garage for 7 years just because "his wife didn't like it" but the real reason was he wanted to profit off of the car.

    the 90s jdm car market probably won’t go down. even with the usdm japanese cars here have reached peak depreciation a few years ago on them and they’re only going up because there aren’t many left. i personally think that they’re like cars from the 70s, an era of cars that are classics that will not go down because of nostalgia. i can’t say the same for cars from the 2010s and now, but the 90s cars are something people should get into now because they’re not getting cheaper.

    • @transient442
      @transient442 2 роки тому +26

      I’m sorry but there’s a lot wrong with what you’ve said here. These cars aren’t as rare as people try to make you believe, and they certainly aren’t as rare as cars from the 70s. 20 years is nothing in comparison.
      Those cars from the 70s appeal to the boomer market which can actually afford to pay the asking price not to mention those cars were never artificially inflated, the growth in value for those cars is steady, they didn’t just go from 10k to 100k in a span of 5 years like the JDM market did.
      You say it’s “nostalgia” but I would argue that most of these young people that really like these “JDM” cars right now, didn’t even know about them till they became popular on UA-cam recently.

      I am hitting 18 in a couple of months and have over 5k saved up for a car. I wanted to get a T20 Frogeye Celica GT but that will probably never happen. Why? Because when I looked at the market during the summer, there were a lot of T18 Popup and T20 Frogeye GT's up for sale in good conditions for under 5k. When I checked the prices again today, my jaw dropped. They were almost all gone and the only ones that stayed up were the ones that need serious love and restoration to make them good again. I seriously hate social media nowadays because they are solely responsible for the prices jacking up so much. Another good example is the old gen Corolla TS. Checked the prices in the summer, there were DOZENS for under 4k in good condition. Now? Fucking can't get a good one for under 6k.

    Here's the main problem, from an Australian aspect there's been really no new cars that are exciting since the peak of the jdm cars say 1990~2004. Theres been a couple but nothing compared to the options available in that time period. The run of the mill cars might taper off and drop but the halo cars shouldn't be too affected due to their status.

      And that makes it a problem for the market of jdm cars that still have new models coming. For example previously a 10 year old wrx sti would’ve been like half the price of what a 10 year old wrx sti is today, but logically if a 20 year old car is holding its value so well, the newer version isn’t gonna drop in price, which kinda forces the demand onto the older models

    • @97boucher
      @97boucher 2 роки тому

      That doesn't explain prices doubling/tripling in the last 2-3 years. In Australia we've also had a lot of extra money being given out during the pandemic for things like jobkeeper, or the ability to pull out $10k from your super, which has cashed up a lot of younger people. We also haven't been able to travel internationally, so people have had more money to pump into their hobbies.
      I imagine that once international travel opens up and the new car market returns to normal, these prices will dive.

    Americans who import from Japan are not part of the typical consumer car market. They are enthusiasts. It barely scratches the surface of the US market. Fact is 90s Japanese car numbers are dwindling but the demand is not. A 20 year old in Australia would rather buy an s13 or r33 for 20k rather than an 86 for similar money. Japanese cars changed in the 00s and its never been the same. 90s Japanese cars are what happened to 70s muscle cars in the 90s. The kids who grew up wanting them now have the cash to buy. If you, want to predict the future look at the price of 70s muscle cars now.

After buying and selling a few newer cars and losing a lot, I'd rather buy a fun old car with the option of making money when I sell ... but that's a car to use rather than for investment purposes. Most jdm 90s cars are as reliable as new cars if looked after. If you like cars, unless you want heated seats and reverse parking assistance there are more logical reasons to buy an older jdm classic car.

      I think the reason why 80's and 90's JDM cars go up so much is because of their barebones feeling. If you drive a Huracán, you'll get bored quickly because it does have power but the car is boring with all of its features. Meanwhile the Celica GT feels amazing. It has barely anything in it, is light and has a 156 or 172hp engine (depending on whether you want a frogeye or a popup). Plus their styling is so simplistic, it looks amazing. In Jeremy Clarkson's documentary about the car culture in Japan in the early 2000's (if not, even before that), a prominent car designer said that the R32 Godzilla is simply too simplistic, boring and too barebones, and then went on to say that a hatchback was better because the styling had more lines and looked better.

    Its very unlikely the jdm market is going to crash it may mellow out for a bit. How are they gonna get cheaper when there are less and less for sale each year. There only going to rise due to supply and demand look at old 70s and 80s mussel cars and there prices today. I think that just before Covid started I noticed Jdm car prices where starting to rise and I think that in 2020/2021 we realised that its getting harder to find clean examples which happened to be during Covid which I think has had the biggest influence on prices.

    It’s not a bubble. You missed a massive point - supply and demand. Less and less cars will become available, driving up the prices. Look at the prices of old classic cars, are they worth that much money? No, do people pay for them, yes! Golf GTi’s, Ford Escorts Cosworths, old Ferrari’s, literally hundreds of old cars.
    Can you confirm specifically what cars you think are in a bubble? I don’t understand.

I was told there was a fire at our supplier and the snow storm in Texas hurt us too .... I'm hearing that the company we get sensors from is building here in the States somewhere .... It's a good idea because I need my job but us not getting the sensors is causing VW to suspend production ... We have had 4 weeks of shutdowns and they have been talks of another 2 weeks in August ... Today is Friday here and I'm off today because of parts shortage .... I hope they get us back going soon because we are launching the all electric VW iD-4 soon and it will be tough to get the preorders built without sensors ... But when we do get a steady supply I'm sure we will be running 6 days a week ... Here's hoping for that 🤞

It was a very upsetting realization because I was attempting to get an R32 at the time, but fortunately I was able to buy private party in the states. It was still an inflated price, but much more livable than what "other places" were asking. That said, these cars aren't getting made anymore, and you've mentioned restrictions potentially coming into play and whatnot. When demand exceeds supply... even if this bubble pops, it will only go down temporarily, and prices are going to continue to rise from there. The harder it is to get something the more people want it and the more people will pay for it.

Its a slap in the face of all the importers here in the U.S being like "SuPpLy AnD DeMaND, ThEeZ CaRz R GeTTinG HaRdEr 2 CoMe By EvErYdAy HuRrR DuRR." I always knew something was fishy about it, just from the sheer sharp increase on everything in such a ridiculously short amount of time. I knew there was some sort of market manipulation either by the sellers or the importers/companies themselves. When these cars outpaced prices on some of the rarest classics/collector cars from the past 70-80 years, that you see on Barrett Jackson and those took literally decades to get to their price points. These 30 year old Toyotas and Nissans got to those price points in 2 years or less.... It just didn't seem right to me. Glad to see I was somewhat on point with my hunch. Let's hope things normalize and these cars will remain attainable to the average car guy/girl for years to come.

    b. harder to find and buy than it is today and less expensive

    Many valid points, and maybe there is somewhat of a bubble, but this trend preceded COVID and I can't see prices falling that much. These cars are not essential goods. Essential goods typically respond more predictably to market forces aka supply and demand. These can be considered luxury goods, and there is strong competition between buyers for many of these cars. These cars just increase in price and enter different price segments. The buying power of people buying 34 Vspec IIs 5 years ago is different than those buying them now, but they still sell right?

    I bought a completely original Nissan 200-SX 1989 mk.1 with 40k miles. Where I live, this car is incredibly rare, and it's been my dream car forever. One very important thing that I wanted to say is that the prices are mental, and people might not know this completely. I was actively searching for 3 years for a grey (KL0) S13 that was stock and unmolested, and the supply that exist is just sad - most are tuned shitboxes on fiberglass kits that have crashed 50 times on a roundabout and are in their 3rd engine. That's exactly what I do not want. And on a matter of MONTHS, prices were increasing an average of 400€ per month, which is insane. These owners are the typical "I know that I have", so they don't leave you much of a negotiation margin and if the price is 15k, it's 15k. The other thing I noticed is that, if prices for a mediocre S13 are around 15k, the immaculate ones go for 25k or 30k. There's this huge gap and I didn't know that until I bought mine. These markets are absolutely insane, and the reason I bought the car in a hurry is because if I waited 3/4 months longer, I'd never be able to afford it anymore. I would, but it's silly to be paying like 30k for an 1989 car that is so delicate and parts are pretty much extinct.

      They are likely assuming that prices will continue to rise while you're in the opposite camp. The thing is, there are people who look at cars as investments rather than vehicles primarily to be driven and enjoyed. It sounds as if you fall into this later group (as do I). Sadly, my guess is that prices will continue to rise. The most important thing for you to keep in mind is the value that such cars hold to you personally regardless of what others are willing to pay for them. Even if the prices were to double over the next decade, the cars would be no different to drive or work on (although insurance and the prices of parts, etc. would all be more expensive as well).

    It's a little hard for me to gauge some things based on my town here in the US, cause the JDM scene's pretty small, and there isn't a lot of money in it that I can see. But I suspect the price bubble actually already took a lot of things out of the range of most people.
    Earlier in the pandemic I know a lot of people were looking for project cars when they were likely to be home, anes and d that might have helped the price bubble somewhat, but it hardly seems there's been much influx of JDM stuff around here. Some blame the rich Arab states and other nearby places where there's a lot of money going around, though, and that seems to count for a lot of that export market. My guess is the speculation will have to peak, if it hasn't already, cause the market will have to saturate among those who can afford the inflated prices anyway.

    Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but there is no bubble to burst here... The demand is still super high and clean examples are getting harder and harder to find which means supply is going down, demand is higher than supply so prices will continue to rise, It's simple economics. Unless something kills demand (don't see that happening) then prices will not be going down. It's simply a matter of all us 90's kids growing up and now being able to afford the cars we dreamed about back then. This along with all the JDM youtubers has created a huge market for these cars and that won't be changing anytime soon.

      People can chase other cars. clapped out GTR 34s now are more expensive than a large swathe of Porsches that are better in every way.

    As an American who also follows the car market... The USA is the #1 consumer market in the world; however, there is a global supply issue due to supply AND demand destruction. Couple that with the fact that restarting the global supply chain is a slow process while infections continue and you have the recipe for limited supply. Furthermore, all the processors in the world exist in Taiwan where there was a drought and closures due to the pandemic... Since everything has become a computer, a extreme lack of CPU/GPUs is an extreme lack of anything that relies on them. Until they work through the problems in the semiconductor supply chain new cars, graphics cards, heavy equipment, etc will be in short supply. You are right that it has created a bubble that will eventually pop when the supply catches up to demand. Its not just cars either. Today I heard of 2 houses that were sold $1 million OVER asking price because wealthy Chinese people (trying to get their money out of China before they are "Jack Ma'd") and corporations from around the world buying up all the residential property in the US, UK, and elsewhere because they know that everything is in a bubble right now, so they are buying physical assets instead of reinvesting while prices are high. Just look at Bill Gates. That dude is an amazing investor and has always been a forward thinking dude. What is he doing right now? He's selling a good portion of his stock portfolio and buying US farmland... I dont think its because he has finally decided to get a job that might require him to sweat a little or because he looks great in overalls. Its because everything is in a bubble along with other factors that I wont go into here.
    TL;DR It is, logically, the global supply chain and global central banks dumping outrageous amounts of cash into the system. All that money flowing around has been inspiring people to buy a 2nd or 3rd car. Everything is in a bubble, cars included. So, dont buy anything right now if you can help it.

    I'm not in the US but the cars have gone up a lot where I am, I don't think they'll drop because there's nothing to really replace them with, they'll probably just hold fairly flat once things settle down

    Well said Sam, I have the same evaluation of the current market so let's wait & see 👀
    Something you DO NOT want to do is drift Tesla cars... I know a guy who makes the batteries for Tesla cars and they are very highly explosive units so forget that idea, plus half the fun is the sound of that tuned engine rasping through that 4 inch bore exhaust don't you agree 👍
