Congrats. I bought and later built my own race cars. I raced NASCAR style stocks cars here in the states for 10 yrs at local tracks around Michigan. It’s a lot of work but I don’t regret any of it. I quit after a bad wreck and our 1st child was born. I can see the excitement in your face. Have fun. Im a fan of formula vee. I may someday get one in retirement.

Found this video really really fascinating, it was so great how you documented your whole process. As a British guy, I find it admirable the lengths you Aussies have to go for getting motorsport stuff😅. I'm lucky enough to be 15 minutes from donington park, and could get to most race tracks in England within 3 hours. When you said "it's in the same state as me, but over 200 miles away" I was baffled, I always forget how huge Australia is😂. I have nothing but respect for the journey you've gone on to get this car. I am incredibly excited to watch the rest of the videos on your racing journey, thank you for making this for us to watch😁
Europe (and particularly the UK) is definitely where it's at for motorsport. I'm roughly half way between Eastern Creek and Bathurst, with the newer Luddenham Raceway closer still. Not quite the same as you but plenty to keep me busy at the moment.
@robinthebobin6537 : There is a TV series called 'Outback Truckers' not too high on artistic merit, but it gives a very clear picture of the vastness of Australia, and how undeveloped the interior territories are. From a different point of view: I live in New Zealand, similar land area to the UK. When visiting relatives near London we quickly said 'Yes' when the offered to drive us back to our accommodation... after all, it would only be about a 30 minute drive (In NZ). When they dropped us off after a three and a half hour stop-start drive, we were very embarassed! NZ's total population is less than London's!

As allready said, I'm really excited to see and hear about the tech of the car. Also I think you'll be really happy with it, since you've put so much time and effort in choosing the car. I've bought an 325ti track car some years ago, without fully thinking it throught and even so it was very fun to drive, I've noticed pretty soon, that the car wasn't right for me - completly stripped without AC or Radio, running semislicks, 6-point harness and bucket seats. Driving it on curvy roads or track was loads of fun - getting there, not having a trailer, was exhausting at least... I wish you no trouble/crashes and instead a load of fun and will happily wait for the upcoming videos :)
Many congrats! That's a sweet car, and seems to fit your situation really perfectly. I appreciate your breakdown of pricing, since it's often really tough to get a sense of what the cost is to enter into motorsports. Would love to see some discussion of long-term accrued costs as you get ramped up over the next few months.

Congratulations on your purchase. I hope you enjoy the journey. I loved the backstory and the logic behind the choice. I would concur with most of them. Our point of difference may be that I would have chosen the Super Sports series, as I think it is incredibly strong at the moment and getting better all the time. That said you explained why you didn't go that route and it makes sense. I am a professional race engineer and am currently involved in the Super Sports series in NSW. I was also involved with the original Speads Sports Racers when they were imported by Meridian Motorsport. Happy too chat if you think it may be useful.
Small world :) If it wasn't for my driveway I would have bought the Williams and entered Supersports. Darren was super helpful. I had a builder come to the house to quote on structural modifications to accommodate a crane/hoist for getting the car onto a trailer, but it just wasn't worth it. FRCA and SuperSports are quite often racing at the same events so maybe I'll meet you next year at some stage.

If distance and transport weren't an issue, I would have suggested a Formula Star Mazda from the early 2000s. They were powered by the Mazda Renesis engine (twin rotary) with 240bhp and high reliability. Most listed sell for less than your budget (US$25K).
This ↑ Little late now, but those things are really cool, but he did mention the Formula Fords, which if he got one from the early 80s, would've had the potential to have a 12A rotary in it. Being powered by a GSX1300R engine isn't too shabby, even though I'm personally partial to the CBRXX's 😅
Imo the best race car besides the trans option. Is the car that has the biggest race clubs like the miata but kiln race form. Seems like radical would be really good as they often have races. Just another thing to consider.

Nice one Michael, I discovered your other channel having discovered that 3DP is now properly accessible to the layman. I come from a background as a motorsports design engineer, so my experience with SLA and SLS was just designing parts that were handed over to the RP boys, who made them. Congratulations! That will be a ton of fun to drive and race! I went with a SR3XX, but without the ability to remove the front splitter it requires 10 feet of ramp and 4 huge boards to load it into my enclosed trailer, so not exactly convenient 😅 But sure is a blast to drive!

An F1000 is a lot of car for your first openwheel race car probably a FF or F4 would have been the better choice when starting out. But atleast you bought the slowest F1000 (Speads) an aero brick in a class that was highlighted by some radical aero choices (see JDR). Your first 3D printing project for the car should be new smaller side pods as the frontal area on those cars was huge! Good luck and if you do feel like the car is too much dont be afraid to sell it and move down a class or two no sense ending up driving a fast car at only 30% vs a slower car at closer to 100%

Watching this made me realise how great it is living in the UK. Just looked on Racecars Direct, and found around 6 cars that would have fitted your criteria. F1000 Jedis, a 900cc Speads (very similar to what you got), a carbon tub Mygale, and an older Ralt F2000 Toms Toyota.
This was really informative. I'm in Canada so it would be a bit different but sharing the steps was very informative. I hope to do the same in a year time. Thank you!
Huge congrats mate. I learnt to drive circuits in my dad's historics, and have looked at the f1000 cars for about a decade - kids, surfing and work have held me back. It's absolutely fantastic in this day and age to find a down to earth person like this who has made and still makes great well thought out decissions about making his passion come through. I can only imagine the feeling of racing a liteweight open wheeler, the lack of inertia and fantastic feeling of race suspension. The closest I've gotten was in a Lotus street car 10 years ago. After that I dreamed of designing and building a liteweight Porsche 909 Bergspyder like car with an Audi TT 1.8T midmounted drivetrain but that's for my next life ha ha.
I follow your 3D printing... then saw this video. I used to live in Australia (Penrith, just up the road from you!), and worked on rally cars out in Orange designing steering and suspension setups. I used to be on the spanners with a Formula 5000 car some years ago in the UK, which was fun. Back in the UK now, and my only racing these days is Sim racing, online. Race anything, any time, anywhere, and no cost to fix it after lap 1 turn 1 chaos 🙂 Good luck with the F1000 !
Penrith is indeed very close to me. I'm in a league with Sunday night sim races, it's a lot of fun and I'm, hoping what I have learned will transfer to real life.
I have followed Teaching Tech for years, never know you do motorsport!!! 3D printing and Race car what more can you ask?! Very excited to follow this channel as well. In the US there is another series call Thunder Roadster, they are very affordable. I am supiried that there is no similar in Australia.

Good choice with your F1000. The Formula Racing Car guys will look after you. I would like to update your with the Williams car. I am assuming that you weren't told that t had a blown head gasket? The new owner found out the hard way. He has had the engine rebuilt within a few months, and he retested it at Wakefield Park a few weeks ago. It is now a rocketship.

What a great story! Thanks for sharing. I really appreciate the way you mapped out your desires, goals and choices and found your favored solution. It was fun to walk down that path with you. I thought I was going to get into karting, after road racing motos in my late 30s, but I ended up really finding what I was looking for in Sim Racing around 2009. As compared to motos, a smaller commitment of time and $$$ spent on prep and repairs, yet a deep world of intricacies to tweak on, as one builds a computer rig and chooses sim racing hardware and video setup, a wide universe of very competitive leagues in multiple countries, communities of wonderful people involved and the chance to interact directly and real-time via a headset, and chat, all available to me at home. 3D put it over the edge! Granted I still get my hands dirty in my machine shop in the shed, and a small herd of motos, always needing something. I love the research and thought you put into your plan! Well done mate!! When I first got into bike racing, my racing buddy said to me, "I know EXACTLY how much money you're going to spend on racing!" I was a bit incredulous of his ability to innately understand my financial budget so I said, "Really, how much?" He smartly replied with the exactly correct answer, "All of it!!". I’ve been going through this process off and on for a couple years. I even went out and saw that yellow F1000 in WA. The car I ended up buying was a Tarmac Rally car and is an absolute dud. After it’s fully sorted (as I don’t intend to pass on a problem) I’ll sell it and I’ll be back in the market for an open wheeler. Wish I’d gone that way first time. Look forward to following your journey.
Amazing it's really difficult to get a good race car for cheap and that has this much of care but into it looking forward to seeing more of it And I have been looking to buy a race car here in Saudi Arabia but there isn't much posts or websites so you have to go to track days and ask around but there are tons of race car's especially F1 and other high class race cars abandoned around In Dubai Abu Dhabi and Bahrain because they have blown engines from the heat and other problems
I felt fortunate that there was plenty of options. I'm guessing the sand would be a factor for engine health too. I've been t Abu Dhabi and was amazed by the hazy sunsets.
@@TTRacingYT there has been an influx of Radicals and Other track cars coming here to Saudi Arabia recently Radical worked with Hankook tyres to race their cars in Saudi and the gulf countries but there are places in the south of Saudi Arabia like Abha which is very cool and is mountainous and green not a desert which I think would be a good place for a race track

I can only imagine the feeling of racing a liteweight open wheeler, the lack of inertia and fantastic feeling of race suspension. The closest I've gotten was in a Lotus street car 10 years ago. After that I dreamed of designing and building a liteweight Porsche 909 Bergspyder like car with an Audi TT 1.8T midmounted drivetrain but that's for my next life ha ha.
I follow your 3D printing... then saw this video. I used to live in Australia (Penrith, just up the road from you!), and worked on rally cars out in Orange designing steering and suspension setups. I used to be on the spanners with a Formula 5000 car some years ago in the UK, which was fun. Back in the UK now, and my only racing these days is Sim racing, online. Race anything, any time, anywhere, and no cost to fix it after lap 1 turn 1 chaos 🙂 Good luck with the F1000 !
Penrith is indeed very close to me. I'm in a league with Sunday night sim races, it's a lot of fun and I'm, hoping what I have learned will transfer to real life.

In the US there is another series call Thunder Roadster, they are very affordable. I am supiried that there is no similar in Australia.

Good choice with your F1000. The Formula Racing Car guys will look after you. I would like to update your with the Williams car. I am assuming that you weren't told that t had a blown head gasket? The new owner found out the hard way. He has had the engine rebuilt within a few months, and he retested it at Wakefield Park a few weeks ago. It is now a rocketship.

What a great story! Thanks for sharing. I really appreciate the way you mapped out your desires, goals and choices and found your favored solution. It was fun to walk down that path with you. I thought I was going to get into karting, after road racing motos in my late 30s, but I ended up really finding what I was looking for in Sim Racing around 2009. As compared to motos, a smaller commitment of time and $$$ spent on prep and repairs, yet a deep world of intricacies to tweak on, as one builds a computer rig and chooses sim racing hardware and video setup, a wide universe of very competitive leagues in multiple countries, communities of wonderful people involved and the chance to interact directly and real-time via a headset, and chat, all available to me at home. 3D put it over the edge! Granted I still get my hands dirty in my machine shop in the shed, and a small herd of motos, always needing something. I love the research and thought you put into your plan! Well done mate!! When I first got into bike racing, my racing buddy said to me, "I know EXACTLY how much money you're going to spend on racing!" I was a bit incredulous of his ability to innately understand my financial budget so I said, "Really, how much?" He smartly replied with the exactly correct answer, "All of it!!". I’ve been going through this process off and on for a couple years. I even went out and saw that yellow F1000 in WA. The car I ended up buying was a Tarmac Rally car and is an absolute dud. After it’s fully sorted (as I don’t intend to pass on a problem) I’ll sell it and I’ll be back in the market for an open wheeler. Wish I’d gone that way first time. Look forward to following your journey.

Amazing it's really difficult to get a good race car for cheap and that has this much of care but into it looking forward to seeing more of it
And I have been looking to buy a race car here in Saudi Arabia but there isn't much posts or websites so you have to go to track days and ask around but there are tons of race car's especially F1 and other high class race cars abandoned around In Dubai Abu Dhabi and Bahrain because they have blown engines from the heat and other problems
I felt fortunate that there was plenty of options. I'm guessing the sand would be a factor for engine health too. I've been t Abu Dhabi and was amazed by the hazy sunsets.
@@TTRacingYT there has been an influx of Radicals and Other track cars coming here to Saudi Arabia recently Radical worked with Hankook tyres to race their cars in Saudi and the gulf countries but there are places in the south of Saudi Arabia like Abha which is very cool and is mountainous and green not a desert which I think would be a good place for a race track
