I think it’s important to know your military issued gear to make better use of it in the field. I’m glad you found it interesting! Hopefully you learned a few things 👍🏼
How has the Army not reached out to you to make gear instruction videos?!?!most people think our issue gear sucks, only because they dont know how to use it. It is equipment that has had R&D to death, its not bad gear. Thats why i like surplus gear
To be fair as an nco they should be teaching their guys about gear also everyone has access to the same manuals and internet to learn all this as well... so it's on the individual soldiers as well
The army we have now is not the same army that existed 20 years ago, those kind of NCOs don't exist anymore, there may be a few stragglers about to retire, but they are extinct.......
Oh my. Soldiers are gonna be soldiers. I love it. Especially when he says, nobody does that, or I get rid of that so I can roll it up. And then he demonstrates how to stow your extra mag pouch so you can just pull it out. Brings back great memories of my time in the Infantry.
You sir, have better Explanations on gear than the Army had on its own! Keep up the great work, never figured out how to attach these to my ruck until just now! Really Appreciate the video. Thank you
It’s never explained to us! So I took it upon myself to do the research and find some answers. I was always curious to know the purpose of everything on the Assault Pack. I figured why not share it with everyone? Glad you got some answers 😉👌🏼
That Plastic back piece can be used in a Camping/Bushcraft situation as a cutting Board/Plate. This is the best Demonstration Video of this pack system I've seen on here. 👍
200 round SAW pouches fit on either side of the assault pack and are coincidentally the perfect size for the 2 qt canteen. I did that when I was in, especially at JRTC because I always had to carry twice as much water than the rest of my guys due to my body's reaction to the humidity.
Heck of a PME you did there! Also good job making your ruck look squared away too many times I’d see guys looking like a spaghetti monster. Love seeing a fellow 11B who knows his gear, great job SGT.
Thank you SSG! Put a lot of work into this video. Initially, I researched everything out of curiosity and then figured that my findings could benefit everyone. So I put it all together in this video.
On the back of the pack where you stored the shoulder straps makes a good pocket to place to store your camel back hydration carrier. You can also fold your poncho liner to fit in there for extra padding or towel. It’s a good pocket to keep things out of your pack that will also provide padding for your back. As for the waist straps they are very useful when you have to go on a run with the pack. They keep it from bouncing around on your back. God bless all who dear to serve.
Thanks for the explanation. Ive had this gear issued to me for years and never actually knew what all those snaps and fasteners were actually meant for.
As a mechanic I would fill the sustainment pouches first, run the compression strap through the loop above the female on the flap so to access the pouch I'd flip the lid and the zipper would unclip the compression. As a civilian I run compression as a sudo molly to adjust and access the zipper. Again thank you Sargent for gathering and passing on.😊
I didn’t know either when I first joined! I had a 1SG who was Jump Master qualified and she didn’t know either when I asked. After doing some research and digging, I finally uncovered the mystery 😂 Now hopefully everyone will know! 😀👍🏼
@Pousinboots do you have a contact email? I was curious if you know anything about the MOLLE II PANEL MEDICAL BAG, I've rigged one into the assault pack. I can send you pictures of how I rigged it. However I have no idea whatsoever about how its supposed to be used.
@@themischeifguide Regarding the rigging of this medical pack, I’ve seen some medical packs in the TC 3-21.220. Maybe it’s the same pack 🤔 what’s the name of the pack?
@Pousinboots its called the '' MOLLE II PANEL MEDICAL BAG'' its a panel with two long mesh pockets and has two 1 inch female buckle and a webbing carry handle. I'm not sure if it can interface with the assault pack. Adding to my confusion is that the same item is sometimes also called "MOLLE II INSIDE POCKET REMOVABLE". I have two of the panels with different names on the labels but the same NSN. Edit. It was meant to be used in the MOLLE MEDICAL BAG. They came in a set along with a few other medic specific items. However I'd be interested to know if like many of the other items in the MOLLE II system, if it was intended to be used with the other packs if needed.
I was an Infantry Sgt in the 82nd 30 years ago back in the Alice clip/ 550 cord army. You kids get issued some cool stuff these days. That was an excellent block of instruction sergeant. AATW! 👍
I have one of these that was surplus and I finally found a video where I can learn what all the straps do lol I’ve had it for like 6 years and I’m still finding new ones! I’ve also found putting cutting boards in the flaps on the interior of the main pocket and exterior of the bag helps to give it more rigidity if you don’t have anything else to
Hey thank you for this. I've never been in the military but i do buy and use a lot of military gear like the large ruck and the 3 day assault pack. your videos really help me learn how to attach these things and what i can use them for.
I keep coming back to this video as a refresher whenever I need an idea on how to setup my assault pack. I picked one up at my local surplus shop for $30 that was made in 2004 in the Three Color Desert pattern. Really cool when I found a bunch of used wipes and MRE wrappers in it. I've been on and off when it comes to the plastic shielding and I found it's just more comfortable without it. As an everyday carry pack, it's been serving me well. As for the sides, I have a canteen pouch attached and it works well. I have to say that the MOLLE pouch is a huge improvement from the ALICE pouch, even though this system is just pure nostalgia for me since my father served during The Cold War and Desert Storm. Very informative video!
Thank you! I did all the digging I could to learn about this pack. I still think the most interesting and useful feature is the placement of the 6 mag bandoleer pouch 👌🏼 I think the assault pack has potential but could use a “make-over” for more current applications such as the new radios or anti-tank rounds for the Carl-Gustav.
So many needed answers in a short, concise video! From the time that I was issued the DCP then UCP versions of the MOLLE II kit, no one in any of my units could explain the details of the Assault Pack, especially the internal straps. All questions were answered with "figure it out", and we did, but little things such as adjusting the strap for the 6-magazine bandolier, would have been good to know back then. If your NCOER does not include "Promote ahead of peers to SMA ASAP", then it damn well should, and anyone signing in the Rater/Senior Rater/Reviewer that says otherwise should be relieved unless they are producing quality instruction at this level or better!
THANK YOU! I very much appreciate your feedback! Very constructive! Same thing happened to me. I had a 1SG who was JM and even she didn’t know what the internal straps were for 😄. She just told me to figure it out. So I took it upon myself to research everything and put together this video to share my findings with everyone.
Just picked up an ACU pattern of this exact bag for $25, learned so much of how it's properly used from this video! I see it now as a little piece of living history, thank you very much!
You’re welcome! Wow! You got it for a good price! 👌🏼 I’m hoping they come out with a new assault pack design. I love the fact that it’s “Jumpable” and has the 6 Mag Bandoleer Pouch. Maybe 2 integrated grenade pouches would be good 🤔
@@pousinboots the one thing I wished for was longer frame straps on the top so they could double as sleeping bag straps without the need for a compression bag. Not sure how much utility that would serve in the field for an assault pack but for me it would mean one less accessory to manage
Never knew about the 6-Mag bandolier snaps or the sincgar radio aspect, I feel so silly for never noticing those. However, you actually can still attach the sustainment pouch and I’ve used it more times than I can count in lieu of a ruck. Simply affix the last unused strap to the strip of MOLLE on the front of the pack. It’s not an official option but it’s very secure and makes the pack a lot more versatile. Previously I mounted a spare IFAK, two canteens, and a third canteen pouch I used as a junk pouch.
I trained on the old Alice packs. Having been a bit of a Backpacker, I wound up training my Squad on how to pack and use a backpack. Properly used, they worked fairly well. Nice to see better gear now.
Aw man! Clear content, great production, excellent detail! Outstanding video! I finally broke down and bought this pack recently. Mainly came here to find out what the white straps were for... but got a TON of helpful information. Thanks, I appreciate it!
Just 3.5 years active just popped back into the reserves last month, you put out information I have never heard. Thank you. I will be spreading what I learned from this video, and will be watching you a lot more.
Glad to see a paratrooper equally perplexed about the ability to attach the assault pack to the large ruck as I was. That would be so awkward to walk with.
I beg the differ. Its all about how you pack, where you pack it. Then again it's all personal preference and your individual job requirements. Amat Victoria Curam @pousinboots
Excellent. The MOLLE tabs on the bottom of mine were the smaller MOLLE tabs and would not allow the waistpack buckle to pass through. I had to slightly modify the female buckle. Had to clip the buckle, remove it, let the straps pass through the MOLLE tabs, then reattach the buckles. Excellent review and great pack.
I would definitely use that waist belt if I was climbing high angle rock and ice. You sometimes get into strange positions and don't want your pack to flop over your shoulder or around your arm.
Good point. It’s just that for the grand majority of military applications, it’s not going to be used that way. That’s a very particular situation to be in. I would make it thinner and removable from the pack.
I'm a ssg with 9 years of service. and I learn so much from you. Hopefully I can come to Italy soon and have you as my dream TL. promote ahead of peers. AATW
excellent tutorial Sgt. I wish we had such gear back in the 80's and 90's.. I have obtained for my present use the Medium Pack along with several bandoleers 3x, and the waist pouch. I find it all pretty good gear. well made, and very useful. I just need to find myself one of these small assault packs. As a former Paratrooper myself, and JM. It's funny that you'll only hear such vocabulary from a paratrooper. leg land has no idea.
Excellent video! I feel like some things are missing (others below have mentioned the 4-channel PALS webbing on top, or alt. ways of attaching sustainment pouches) but I've been wanting a decent (and recent) video on attaching the pack to the rucksack. The TMs are something but videos should be the way to go in the modern military for some soldiers. Been in since 2020, deployed to Afghanistan in 2021 (was there for the withdrawal) and the Assault Pack was barely used by anyone anyway with our Natty Guard pogey CRAM mission. Most people just attached one of those USO pouches to the top webbing or the side, lol.
When I was issued the original molle system in 2002, it came with a vhs tape explaining how it’s configured. That’s how the marines in my unit carried it. Fast forward 15 years, when I joined the guard, none of the guys in my unit how to carry it with the main pack. They always carried it in front.
More comfortable than the old metal frame ruck, but has a lot of ‘gina stuff like plastic connectors which could break and leave the thing useless. The old ruck was bomb-proof, and I’m not sure this one is. I ain’t complaining. Thanks for the brief, sergeant, and well done! 1:28
The compression strap still does not extend far enough towards the center to fit the sustainment pouch attachment properly. It just seems that it was not really designed for it. I could always make it work. The designers seem to have not taken the sustainment pouch attachments into account properly.
11:19 I attach my individual M4 magazine pouches to the side of the assault pack as a multipurpose pouch, ammo holder, and energy drink holder. And the newer waist pack have MOLLE so that they can weave into the bottom of the assault pack for a more secure fit.
The biggest mistake I ever made with my assault pack was removing the back panel. I carried two full-size radios. I humped that f#cker around on and off for 30 days until i was able to get back to the hut. My back was jacked up!! If your wearing body armor... not a problem. Just a chest rig.... huge problem!
Outstanding ! My Batman often complains about the weight of my gear he has to hump I'm sure these tips will help make him running around after me, even more enjoyable
First and foremost, thank you for our service. As a civilian who uses milsurp gear for various activities, it's great to have experienced personnel clearly explaining how to properly deploy these items. I also enjoy the fact that you cover not only the "book" but the real life use. Keep up the great work.
Great vid. Side PALS can also accommodate IFAK pouches, grenade pouches, and SAW pouches. Never did understand why there is not webbing for that last sustainment attachment point like on the USMC FILBE assault pack.
'ell... I just ordered one of those 3 day packs in ACU for camping/bushcraft and already have two sustainment pouches. One is a perfect fit for my Thermarest/Cascade "self inflatable" air pad folded in half lengthwise (10"x72") and rolled. My Bivy tent (Dragoon Ridgeback) rolls down to 16"x7" so it'll fit in the main compartment. I'll just take it to the tailor and have a snap or piece of PALS sewn on.
We got issued these in my training unit and everyone used them as school bags. Makes me feel kinda dumb hearing my snack pouch is actually a mag pouch 😂
I've been thinking about getting a larger backpack for a while, and the MOLLE II Large Rucksack and the MOLLE II Assault Pack combined offer more than double my current pack capacity(Current is ~40L, give or take). Add the Sustainment pouches(to the Large Ruck), the waist pack, and other gear, and this seems like a no brainer, even for a civvie like myself. Plus, I would have the option to use the MOLLE II gear the way it was designed, on top of the extra storage for hiking, camping, or even transporting clothing and gifts.
I got a surplus one and i cannot for the life of me get the waist pack buckles to go into the molle straps on the bottom. I wonder if the sewing was redone on this. Ive been at it for over 30 minutes and im starting to get angry now.
You can hang equipment on the bottom like you do on the top, you just have to unbuckle and use the straps that run along both sides of the “US” and use those male ends with the two bottom female ends
I think that adding the Canteen pouches to the sides would come into some good use. You can carry and use them as canteen pouches or GP pouches. even loading up more mags (LRS-D) back in the day. Crazy thing is for GW1 in 91. I didn't have a proper military assault pack. So I found an EASTPACK that was forest green and used it. I stuffed it into the top of my LOWA Commando pack, and there it sat for an assault pack /Run Bag..
According to the CASOP you're only allowed to use the built-in air items when jumping in Ranger Batt otherwise you have to use standard air items which essentially rig the same as the medium ruck.
I encourage you to look at my video on how to rig the Assault Pack using the internal straps: Rig Assault Pack with Internal Straps ua-cam.com/video/AQyGVKdHr6U/v-deo.html
There's a recording of a 90s training video about the molle system that says the molle on tje side is for the sustainment pouches. You can also molle the triple mag panels there, then have more webbing to attach items. I'm running with canteen and mag pouches there
Looking for an explanation onto what the horizontal row of 4 MOLLE attachment points above the bandoleer pouch would be used for. Any idea? I cant find any information from the TM.
Man, I was going to mention it but left it out after all. From my research, nothing in particular. It’s there for anything you would like to attach. Personally, I have never used it. I feel that whatever I attach would get in the way of the opening of the front pocket. But maybe you could use a carabiner to hook some urgent items? Just can’t think of something in particular. Hopefully someone sees your question and gives an answer 🤞🏼
This is awesome! I have been buying alot of surplus militart stuff from Ebay and have been looking for something like this! I liked and subbed! Can you do one on the Combat Casulaty Bag? I have mine pretty rigged but would like to know what alot of the extra things are actually used for. Thanks!
You’re right, it does fit. You’re talking about attaching the Waistpack by the MOLLE attachment straps to the PALS Webbing on the bottom of the Assault Pack. It works! However, they show to attach it to the Assault Pack the way I demonstrated. So I prefer showing what’s the intended design. In this configuration, the buckles remain clipped in. You access the Waistpack by opening the slide fastener.
The top left molle on the Sustainment pouch can be attached to the front of the assault pack why you would want to put so much stuff in an assault pack? I have no clue
Great video. As a civilian who loves to collect surplus gear, it's nice to have a real soldier explain how it is used.

Been in since 2020, deployed to Afghanistan in 2021 (was there for the withdrawal) and the Assault Pack was barely used by anyone anyway with our Natty Guard pogey CRAM mission. Most people just attached one of those USO pouches to the top webbing or the side, lol.
Thanks for sharing your experience, great video!!!
You’re Welcome! 😃👍🏼
Excellent presentation. Thanks.
You earned my subscription.
God bless
Thank you for the feedback, and I appreciate the support!
When I was issued the original molle system in 2002, it came with a vhs tape explaining how it’s configured. That’s how the marines in my unit carried it. Fast forward 15 years, when I joined the guard, none of the guys in my unit how to carry it with the main pack. They always carried it in front.
All my ta50 finally makes sense. Thank you so much!
You’re welcome! Glad I could help! 😃
Awesome demonstration 💗
Thank you! 😀
@@pousinboots Your welcome.
If you leave the compression strap on (connected) you may be able to put the sustainment pouch on weaving it through he compression strap .
The compression strap still does not extend far enough towards the center to fit the sustainment pouch attachment properly. It just seems that it was not really designed for it. I could always make it work. The designers seem to have not taken the sustainment pouch attachments into account properly.
10 years in the army and i never knew the assault pack could hook onto the ruck
tbf doing it according to the manual is the single most unbalanced place to attach it.
11:19 I attach my individual M4 magazine pouches to the side of the assault pack as a multipurpose pouch, ammo holder, and energy drink holder. And the newer waist pack have MOLLE so that they can weave into the bottom of the assault pack for a more secure fit.
this was very helpful thank you brother
You’re welcome
Yes Sir , It was very helpful !
My Batman often complains about the weight of my gear he has to hump
I'm sure these tips will help make him running around after me, even more enjoyable
As a confirmed "gear-whore" I'm fascinated by how these things are supposed to work. Thanks for clearing up the mystery!!
You’re welcome!
Great video !
Thanks! 😃
Great video man, thanks a lot
First and foremost, thank you for our service. As a civilian who uses milsurp gear for various activities, it's great to have experienced personnel clearly explaining how to properly deploy these items. I also enjoy the fact that you cover not only the "book" but the real life use. Keep up the great work.
Thanks!
keep the foam. You can you it as a pad in your boots or padding for a splint.
Well done, very detailed, thanks a lot!
The Team Leader I never had. Thanks SGT!
Very helpful thank you.
Excellent job
Thank you 😀 I put a lot of work into that video
That MOLLE pack was fantastic during my 2005 deployment.
I really appreciate it battle.
You’re welcome 👍🏼
super great video thank you...
I love this video❤❤❤
The clips also work well if you are carrying a CLS bag
We got issued these in my training unit and everyone used them as school bags. Makes me feel kinda dumb hearing my snack pouch is actually a mag pouch 😂
Would love to see this for the medium pack
It’s in the plans 😉
I have bad memories of that bag...
One of my favorites. I own 3 of them. Hoping these legends make them in AOR1/AOR2 someday.
Once again, sitting here in my office looking at my pile of issued equipment now learning its purpose...FROM YOU! Promote above peers.
Thank you! 😃👍🏼
'preciate this 🫡
You’re welcome 😉
I got a surplus one and i cannot for the life of me get the waist pack buckles to go into the molle straps on the bottom. I wonder if the sewing was redone on this.
Ive been at it for over 30 minutes and im starting to get angry now.
Why hasn't anybody had a channel like this before?
You can hang equipment on the bottom like you do on the top, you just have to unbuckle and use the straps that run along both sides of the “US” and use those male ends with the two bottom female ends
ma vidéo préférée à toi. Je suis curieux de savoir quelle bandoulière l'armée américaine utilise
Great to have a video like this. So Team Leaders don't exist in the Infantry any more?
You are based. And your rucksack with assault pack is awesome.
According to the CASOP you're only allowed to use the built-in air items when jumping in Ranger Batt otherwise you have to use standard air items which essentially rig the same as the medium ruck.
I encourage you to look at my video on how to rig the Assault Pack using the internal straps:

It's for lashing
I use that strip to hold 2 bike lights .(night rider 1200 boost In a Double 40MM Grenade pouch.)I daily Cary this bag.
I'm going to lace shock cord on mine in an X pattern . Will the E-tool pouch fit there ?
That's actually where you attach the top front corner of the sustainment pouches.
This is awesome! I have been buying alot of surplus militart stuff from Ebay and have been looking for something like this! I liked and subbed! Can you do one on the Combat Casulaty Bag? I have mine pretty rigged but would like to know what alot of the extra things are actually used for. Thanks!
The bottom straps can also be used to attach the ocp Fanny pack to the pack. The strap spacing is identical
Great video.
I hate putting that plastic white sheet back in. But, I do it.
Yeah, I’m not too convinced of it’s purpose tbh
The top left molle on the Sustainment pouch can be attached to the front of the assault pack why you would want to put so much stuff in an assault pack? I have no clue
Dziękuję za wyjaśnienie plecaka 🙂 pozdrowienia z Polski 😁
Best assault pack review full stop. How do you clean it? I have a DCU one.
The Army has a TM for a rucksack now? Why am I not surprised
