Hi! Nice review! Short and straight to the point. Have you ever used the 5.11 Rush 72? If you did, between it and Molle II medium which one do you prefer? I'm kind of on the fence about buying one of them
Genuine 'carbon fiber' contains nano materials to make it stronger /still lightweight. Also 'hook and loop' is the technical term, whereas 'velcro' is a brand name. Like tissue vs 'kleenex'.
I love that you offer up reviews for both soldiers, and civilians. As a hiker/camper (civilian) I can appreciate both, and always find some value in your videos. Thanks for all the work you put into your video's!
Long story short, not having a medium ruck in JRTC made my life a lot harder than it had to be. When i finally got issued one, i loved it so much that i refused to return it to CIF. No regrets.
Add the side pouches from the large ruck. It adds a lot of space to an already good system. Just watch the zippers because they can slip behind the pouches. I was a medic and the extra space saved me from having to deal with an aid bag on shorter ops.
Just recently came across your channel while checking revues on Amazon, I like seeing someone that is straight up and to the point. It has changed my mind on several purchases and caused me to investigate products much better before a purchase. Thanks again for everything that you are doing.
Obviously there was a sergeant major on the committee that designed the ruck. “But if we put mesh pouches on there Joe’s will have gloves and socks and Hooah bars and all kinds of non uniformity stuff hanging out of there!”
I actually kinda prefer it this way so you can attach more stuff to the sides. The camelbak is the perfect length for the sides of these and otherwise you can put either a sustainment pouch or e tool to Balance the weight out
I first saw the MOLLE in 1999. Schofield Barracks. A platoon got to test it out. Then, in 2002, at Fort Drum we had a MOLLE ruck we tested as well. The sleeping compartment was actually a separate piece, then we got another MOLLE the ruck with the sleeping compartment attached which we used in Iraq. It was a better version. This was 2005-06. 🤘🇺🇸
Six months ago I took yer advice on this pack. I agree with what you say. This pack is solid. I ruck 4x month to military standard. This my favorite pack hands down. Thanks. Btw it was you that got me into rucking and now I won't ever stop. I'm 60 now. Ruck is my best friend
Medium ruck was the BEST pack ever issued, so good I finally had to obtain one for recreational use. By far the most used as a 12Bravo in theater. And absolutely right about the hops between fobs, medium was the way to go. Also, the compartments are good for separating demo charges from pogie bait ;)
I just spent about 12 minutes, watching a guy walking around the woods, talking about a rucksack. A lot of good information on there, and to me it would seem like a good, more upto date pack than the old ALICE packs. Btw, sir, thank you for your service. I know that sounds hollow, but you did a lot of things most people, including me, couldn't do. Great review, I would love to find one if those, since, I've been thinking about getting another pack?
I used to use military gear when I was much younger. It looked cool, seemed functional. As I got older and more experienced, I realized the real engineering was in the specialized civilian stuff. It sits better, distributes weight better, moves better, packs better, etc. And it also comes with lifetime warranties.
I've been wearing plate carriers since 2012. The one issue I've had was fitting a rucksack over the carrier and being able to shoulder my rifle. Not only that, but not pinching off the blood circulation to my head whenever I'd raise my pistol to my eyes. Rucksacks and carriers have evolved since then. I've learned with PCs the shoulder straps have to be flat, but padded. With medium to large backpacks the shoulder straps have to be wide and flat so as to evenly distribute the weight and allow the butt of the rifle to have real estate to be pressed against the shoulder. Searching for such perfect combinations for my own personal taste has taken me years.
I'm reading you loud and clear. I modifies a couple of molle panels by adding the stretch fabric to the panel itself for a removable stretch pouch and then criss crossed some shock cord over it. Great for a reach back dump pouch or water bottle holder.
Thanks for the review, sold me on it. Picked one of these up recently. Definitely NOT designed in Natick... Somebody had a look at the old ALICE ruck and listened to the soldiers who used it. Former 11B, C Co. 4/9 IN, 6th ID (Light), Alaska in the early 90's. We had the CFP-90 (the old predecessor to the current large MOLLE) and regularly ripped straps and buckles off it. It was especially bad if you had the bitch bag/tripod or a baseplate. We were issued the large ALICE ruck when it had to be DX'd. This is a little small for AK, but still wish we had this for JRTC rotations/summer FTXs.
Those Are Rare, Great Smaller Pack With Frame.Ive Only Seen One, It Is Owned By My Supply Sgt... He Picked It Up In Kuwait. I Been In Since 1984... I miss My ALICE Packs.. A Little Heavier.. Never saw a broken Frame, Comfortable too.
I attached 2 OCP sustain pouches to my medium rucksack, from the large OCP ruck. Only downside is closing the zippers. The pouches kinda get in the way. I basically run, my assault pack + my medium ruck for every mission I go. 🤙🏼
This pack was the bees knees man back in oef. In 11-12 this was THE pack to have when dismounted in the hills of east afg. My all time favorite infantry ruck.
I have the USMC ILBE Main Pack and Assault Pack right now. I plan on getting the MOLLE II Main Pack and Assault Pack when the OCP versions come down in price. Maybe eventually get the FILBE Main Pack and Assault Pack as well.
I've still got a knot or 2 in my back leftover from a PRC-77. I have an old large Alice pack somewhere but as usual I want the updated cool one that you show.
Guten tag! Wie gehts. I love my surplus rucks and sacks both USA and European manufactured. They all may be heavy, heavier than domestic packs but they take so much more abuse and keep on working. I found an Army Molle II medium ruck on ebay for around 50 bucks and that thing has a lot of carrying capacity. The seller included several pouches and threw in a rain cover. It is a very comfortable pack. One of my favorite bushcraft packs is the Norwegian Army Rucksack. I can carry skis, axe, shovel, or rifle behind the side pockets. I was surprised that the NAR was featured in a Kirk Douglas and Richard Harris movie, The Heroes of Telemark. LOL...you can adjust the sternum strap depending on how muscular you are..."or not". Randall, you would be one helluva standup comedian just talking about Army gear and Army life.
I use that same pack except its the ucp version, for search and rescue and it's been the best pack ive used so far. Ironically i dont have a frame or hip belt to help, but even with the 40 odd pounds of stuff on ky shoulders alone its still very effective.
I have this bag in OCP, and spare in ACU. Great bag. I did have one of these in woodland until someone decided they needed it more than me. I have not see or been able to find it again int woodland. I would gladly trade hr ACU WITH CASH if I could get another in woodland again. Being in the Midwest woodland is the best fit for my area. I wish I could locate a replacement in woodland again but have not had any luck finding it. I lost the gear in kept in it but replaced all that it’s just that bag I miss the most.
I may have to give my medium ruck another chance, i didnt know they even existed until i saw them at RFI 😅. During that deployment, I remember trying to avoid taking my large ruck on a patrol, but everything was sagging below the frame of the medium ruck, especially if i use the lower, outer pouch. So i dumped it all and used the large ruck. Havent used it since
It's actually one of my fav issued ruck or piece of gear issued. I can honestly live out of it for about 4-5 days weather pending but the fact that it actually has smaller pockets in the larger pockets is way better than the larger ruck that is literally 1 giant bag and two sustainment bags. For my larger ruck I use an Malice pack that has been modified heavily with extra pouches and it's leaps and bounds better than the larger ruck. This is also a great jumpable ruck too. If you need to wear it with body armor though I would suggest removing the frame though and I've swapped out to different shoulder straps and added the larger ruck waist pack or else that plastic frame will dig into your lower back super bad.
It's been my personal experience that anything you can "live out of" for 3-4 days, you can do so indefinitely as long as the gear holds up. Great advice you have here.
I've got a large ACU Molle II pack and a Marpat ILBE and both are excellent. I've had them for years. Not going to get anything new - my "disposable" prep dollars are for other things now. I'm pretty much set for all categories but can always use more food, ammo and solar power battery storage....
Hi Randall, I've just acquired the new Molle 4000 Airborne Rucksack sent to me from USA, It came with all the straps and hooks for Jumping, Nice bit of Kit, Roy Airborne Vet London England
Got done with a 3 day FTX, used this (fully filled) while carrying a 249. Shit FUCKED my shoulders and back up, regardless of how I’d situate the waist strap. Granted we were moving through jungle and doing 2 klick maneuvers but still. Ima stick with my large ruck tbh
My dude, the creaking! How do you hush up this frame!? I've applied some medical wrap on the bottom corners where part of the belt loops into the frame, but now I believe I'm getting the creaking from the bottom center. Can't really dampen with the med. wrap in that spot - save me, Tom Cruise!
The medium ruck is something that I do not like at all. You cannot fit anything in it if you are taking all the components of the sleep system (Bivy, winter, summer bags). You have to take everything out of the ruck to get to the sleeping bag versus just opening the bottom of the large ruck. You cannot attach the sleeping mat to it like you could with the top flap of the large ruck, there are no sustainment pouches, and fitting a camelback into it is a massive PITA. I have never done any civilian camping so I do not know about how it would work with that.
Actually, we got that specific pack in 08 to be deployed in Iraq. It’s an awesome pack with no real drawbacks other than no back support that I remember. It was a total hip weight carrier. Now if I’m remembering wrong, I apologize.
I wasnt personally issued this ruck but a lot of my friends were, even though I hated my issue ruck (molle 4000) Im glad i wasnt given this one instead. Whenever I saw my friends take it out it seemed to lose structure and would sag pretty hard and theres really no straps to aid this unlike in the larger rucks. The frame is even skinner which id assume make it more fragile than the already damage prone plastic frames from the larger rucks aswell. I find the niche of big ruck too big and small ruck too small should be better handled by allowing the larger rucks to strap down to comfortably pack much less equipment as needed (which I could forsee being a problem with the Molle 2 large ruck but wasnt much of a problem with my molle 4000). That being said asthetically it looks sick i just generally dont like the design of it functionally
Love your gear reviews. One thing that might be helpful is to know what size you are, to see how packs, tents and stuff fit you. You've probably mentioned it, but I missed it. Rock on. :-)
Great vid. South Alabama here just outside Mobile. Got the medium molle in desert & woodland camo and the assault pack in ucp, desert, woodland and ocp. Looking for this one in ocp. Thanks again for your service and look forward to the next vid.
@@joshwells4280 Blackie Thomas has a UA-cam channel and he has videoed a couple of tours in his favorite Army Navy store in Samson Alabama. It’s Kaufman’s if I remember correctly. They have everything.
When you ignored that “no entry” sign you got my subscription.👍 No one owns the land. We lease it temporarily. Just received my pack, based on your review. Thank you for steering me in the right direction.
I took the big pad from the new ruck and put it on my old alice pack and its amazing! I like my assult pack but hate that its acu id kill to find an assult pack in woodland/bdu/dcu. This new pack you got is making me want to try it. I always had problems with the plastic frames getting brittle and breaking in freezing temps im in northern Minnesota-30 to -60 is possible and not uncommon whats the worst cold environment you have had it in and did you have a frame break taking an impact?
I get it, its a nice pack, but you should try the 5.11 Rush 100. Nearly all the issues you mentioned with this pack have been addressed with the Rush 100.
Unrelated historical note: In the Napoleonic wars, the British packs were godawful. Chafed and even choked the soldiers using them. The French packs were well-made and much more comfortable. So you could always tell the veterans from the recruits in Wellington's army, because the veterans swooped on French packs after battle. Using a French pack proved you'd been in battle.
I"am an old school grunt. 0311 U.S.M.C, I have been entertaining the idea of acquiring one of those in the newer camo pattern. I"am just wondering if that could be placed on the old ALICE frame?" Other mods I would implement for my own needs, adding sustainment pouches and replacing the original hip belt with a longer one to add pouches, but that ruck looks like it would do the job for what I want it for. Hunting, Camping and Bushcrafting.
I got a legit new/never issued one off amazon. Problem is: The inside is dry-sticky. Sticky enough that your hands will get mildly sticky and your gear ends up getting sticky. I separately bought a never-issued military butt pack and have noticed the same thing. Not sure what the deal is. Thoughts?
@hardcorecampinggear. Hi, don't know what the issue is with the stickiness of the waterproofing layer that's applied but...even mine had that same problem when issued new.Might be poor chemical composition and rapid break down period.I don't know any soldiers that got one issued that was dry and not sticky to the touch. The dry bags is the only thing I trusted putting any gear in the ruck to prevent any of that getting on it especially clothing.Still got my full Molle II Large with the 3 Day Pack and Waist Pack and other pouches, being a former Ranger I might have been given a pass cause I didn't have to return it to the CIF or other members of my Unit.We were and a small 8 person detail and I will not get into anymore information than that. All the best to you.
Wiggys used to sell a load carrying pack that used the Molle II frame, shoulder straps and belt. Basically a shelf at the bottom. It was great for carrying tools to do trail maintenance like a gas tank, chainsaw, axe..... I think the lack of mesh pockets was intentional as the mesh pockets can get snagged quite a bit if you have loaded packs piled up in the back of a truck or on terrain features.
My medium ruck got stolen during the holidays, just bought a new one to replace it. I used to be on an LLVI team and this ruck was great for RTOs and my go to for anything that didn't involve a huge hump
Love the medium ruck but that waist belt is worthless especially for larger framed folks. I switch mine out with a full size large MOLLE ruck waist belt
Great ruck, but so expensive. I'm from EU, Baltic states. As an alternative, I've got french 45-50l ruck, sac de combat made by Cepovett. Brand new, with bladder and everything that comes with this ruck. Only for €80 🤘😂
Start your own surplus store with access to your viewed approved products 👌. Here on the East Coast along the Blueridge mountains, there are nada military surplus stores around me that I am aware of in my actual vicinity that I am aware of.
I loved the UAFs issue pack it was sweet and plenty of space. used to be able to pack 3 days of food and water along with a couple mags worth of spare ammo. Shame how rare they are now with how much aftermarket and surplus is going around. If you can find one that's not a knock off i'd jump on it they are solid as hell
Nice review. I was looking at these, a filbe assault pack or a medium alice for my go bag. I ended up with an rto alice. Then used the medium molle ii ruck frame to lighten up the pack. Hopefully they will get like the old alice pack in price and availability. Still would like an ocp version for a spare.
OCP sucks in the woods. BUT... if you dirty it up with a can of flat black, it works great in an urban environment. Hey, @UCS7kyY9hqClnfIYreR5xvpg that might make a great topic to do your next video on. Modification of certain camo for your AO.
Does the plastic frame squeak like the large MOLLE II ruck? Btw, I was at FOB Orgun-e and FOB Spin-Boldok in RC South during my two tours in Afghanistan. Where were you brother?
Have you tried that combo of A.L.I.C.E. pack with M.O.L.L.E. shoulder straps, waist belt, and sleep shelf? As for that MOLLE waist belt, is there any third party replacement that conformed to what you would have liked? I need them to be wide all the way through for full support to take any strain off my neck because of my spine condition at the bottom of my neck and not much in the way of shoulders. My heavier loaded ALICE pack doesn't bother me like my lighter school pack does. But the straps and belt are a nuisance. They tend to dig in because they're too narrow.
Hey Randall, Nice Ruck, I may have to start using one! Re Press ups: just did 2×50 in 20 minutes. Back to Rucks, what do you think of Helikon Tex 's Rucks? And what do you think of Pencott Greenzone?
Is there another bag of this type in the $200 and $175 price range that is even comparable in the civilian market or not? I’m considering this pack or the Marines Packs like filbe or ilbe? I like the USMC assault pack Brown or the woodland marpat ruck
If you were going to buy 1 ruck/backpack for survival/camping/SHTF which one would you recommend? Definetly want one that wont jack up my back so if its comfortable huge bonus!

which large ruck did you use? work well?
@@codycox2685 I used the large US Army MOLLE II ruck. Works great.

One excellent "Grunt Proof" review after years of use. I call this the real review. Keep going 💪
Obviously there was a sergeant major on the committee that designed the ruck. “But if we put mesh pouches on there Joe’s will have gloves and socks and Hooah bars and all kinds of non uniformity stuff hanging out of there!”
And then every random Joe just weaves a few feet of shock cord to the outside MOLLE on the back in a zig-zag pattern, and presto, improv mesh webbing.
I actually kinda prefer it this way so you can attach more stuff to the sides. The camelbak is the perfect length for the sides of these and otherwise you can put either a sustainment pouch or e tool to Balance the weight out
Switch out the medium belt with the Large Molle belt. It attaches the same way. If you can find one in OCP.
is it longer in the waist strap?

Cool thanks!
I'm in Covington county near Andalusia. Do you guys have any military surplus stores down there. Only one I know of in my area is in Dothan
Maybe where you live?
In Florida, that is a good way to get shot.
Just saying. 10:22
Ugh yes people own land lol
This is America
I took the big pad from the new ruck and put it on my old alice pack and its amazing! I like my assult pack but hate that its acu id kill to find an assult pack in woodland/bdu/dcu. This new pack you got is making me want to try it. I always had problems with the plastic frames getting brittle and breaking in freezing temps im in northern Minnesota-30 to -60 is possible and not uncommon whats the worst cold environment you have had it in and did you have a frame break taking an impact?
You can buy mesh pouches that attach through molle but they're like water bottle size
Looks like an oversized Maxpedition Condor. Another great pack.
I get it, its a nice pack, but you should try the 5.11 Rush 100. Nearly all the issues you mentioned with this pack have been addressed with the Rush 100.
Rush 72 is equivalent volume to MOLLE medium ruck. Rush 100 they blew the concept of the whole product line
Also I would look into the M9 aid bag. It would make a great assault pack.
Velcro is a brand name. The army has to use hook and loop or pay licensing to use velcro.... even though they are functionally the same
I"am an old school grunt.
Just found your channel. Well done! Subbed.
Northeast Mississippi boy can relate. I think I need one of those.
great vids
Now that is what I call a long-term test 😁 Awesome ruck though. I want one......😥
I hope to some use out of mine in Az this winter rock hunting & hiking. TAKE CARE..
My medium ruck got stolen during the holidays, just bought a new one to replace it. I used to be on an LLVI team and this ruck was great for RTOs and my go to for anything that didn't involve a huge hump
Excellent review! I really like that one, great in between size pack! Outstanding
METAL!!!! \,,/ '-..-' \,,/
Watched a number of your videos so far, subbed
GP Excellent Tutorial 👍🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Love the Cobra patch!
Love the medium ruck but that waist belt is worthless especially for larger framed folks. I switch mine out with a full size large MOLLE ruck waist belt
Yea I've seen that done a lot for comfort.
As a person that’s deployed to Africa and Poland I can vouch for this bag it not just a bag it’s a fren!
Nice to see you walking through the German woods.
🍻
Bro, I was looking for a review on the Modular Sleep System and who the hell do I find? A good old boy from South Mississippi!
@@BillyReed68 like acu, a couple bottles of rit and a warm afternoon can do wonders
I've seen it and just haven't tried it myself. Looks pretty cool
You should review/test the Spec Ops T.H.E pack.
I will. this summer I'll have some epic gear to cover
I think its simular to 5.11 rush series. I love the rush series
I like my large molle or FILBE for serious winter camping
I have an ILBE and love it
@@GruntProof so would you rather choose the ILBE as a bob or this Molle ruck?
Bugging out for real? Probably this or the FPG Marpack. Maybe my large ALICE in colder temps. They're just my favorite
Hey Randall,
Nice Ruck, I may have to start using one! Re Press ups: just did 2×50 in 20 minutes. Back to Rucks, what do you think of Helikon Tex 's Rucks?
And what do you think of Pencott Greenzone?
Haven't heard of any of those
Is there another bag of this type in the $200 and $175 price range that is even comparable in the civilian market or not? I’m considering this pack or the Marines Packs like filbe or ilbe? I like the USMC assault pack Brown or the woodland marpat ruck
Us Army backpacks can be found at big 5 stores
If you were going to buy 1 ruck/backpack for survival/camping/SHTF which one would you recommend? Definetly want one that wont jack up my back so if its comfortable huge bonus!
Molle 4000. Would love to see you do a vid on it ! And or a comparison. Thoughts on the Molle 4000. thanks.
I've been planning on that and just keep forgetting. Thanks!
You needed to have views of the pack exterior from different angles
