  • The time has come, after years of waiting DeWalt has finally release a competitor to the Milwaukee line of cordless ratchets. This video tries and fails to take a look at DeWalt's newest cordless power tool. The 20 Volt Max 3/8 Ratchet.
If you like this bad boy they are selling them in almost every major box store (aka. Lowes and Home Depot).

8:12 “I was able to loosen it with this [makes ratcheting motion] a little bit, use this as a wrench and then it came right off.” Well, yeah. That’s how an electric ratchet is supposed to work. You are supposed to break it free same as a traditional ratchet and it is supposed to finish running the nut/bolt. That’s it. You keep calling it an “impact ratchet” and it seems you expect it to work like an impact wrench. The tool you are looking for is called a compact right-angle impact wrench. You will find the same companies that make them also make power ratchets… because they are completely different tools. Your expectations are out of line with the tool. It is not supposed to break nuts and bolts free and is only intended to save yourself the monotony of ratcheting back and forth after breaking it free manually.

"That’s how an electric ratchet is supposed to work"
Okay. So what is this tool?
      Right angle? Yes.
      Impact? Yes.
      Ratchet? Yes.
You seem to be the only one thinking this isn't meant to break nuts and bolts free.
      What am I missing?

Right angle: Yes, like any ratchet wrench.
Impact: No, which was my point.
Ratchet: Yes, which expects you to break tight fasteners loose manually like any other.
As mentioned before, the tool is for speeding up the ratcheting process. It’s a nut/bolt runner. If you think it’s intended to break the stuck nut/bolt free when you press the button, you’re simply wrong. There is no impact function.
You put it on the stuck nut/bolt, manually break it free, and then run it the rest of the way using the cordless ratcheting function. If you need it tight you run it down until it stops then tighten manually like a traditional ratchet (moving back/forth).

@@emmettturner9452 The one I'm holding in my hand CLEARLY communicates impact! 😆
      Here's DeWalt's instruction for use:
      4. Press variable speed trigger switch 1 to start operation.
      5. Release variable speed trigger switch 1 to stop operation.
They certainly seem to expect the tool to normally begin removal, emphasized by parenthetically adding "can also be used manually":
"The ratchet can also be used manually for starting stubborn fasteners or snugging by releasing the trigger and applying the torque by hand.
NOTE: Excessive manually applied torque may damage the tool housing or mechanism."

@@0202fabrice this morning’s episode of Rainman Ray Repairs discusses the “neutral drop” cordless ratchet technique for the umpteenth time. Clearly, professional mechanics know how these are used and even have tricks to make them more useful.
The “neutral drop” is where you get the “electron” ratchet, as Ray jokingly calls it, up to speed before dropping it on the fastener, using its rotational speed/mass to simulate one small impact hit from a tool that otherwise delivers no impacts. It’s just a shortcut for convenience.
It seems you’ve found instructions describing its use exactly the way I did: You manually break the stuck fasteners free. There is no impact function for applying breakaway torque like this video was testing for.
It’s a common misconception. Professionals like Mr. Subaru routinely mock us for thinking cordless ratchets are supposed to be used like that. There’s a reason TTC includes the manual ratcheting time in their gauntlet used to test these.
It doesn’t even make sense to apply a higher torque without an impact function. To apply that torque you would need to hold it with the same force you would need to turn it manually… only it would be unavoidably dampened by your grip and, thus, less effective even at the same torque. Obviously, they don’t want you using a plastic-bodied tool to manually wrench 300 foot pounds of torque, so there is a much lower limit specified.
Nowhere does DeWALT call it an “impact ratchet” like this video says, but you say it “CLEARLY communicates impact”? Not sure I understand. It is not an impact tool in any way. There is no weighted hammer hitting the anvil for applying more force to the fastener than you are applying manually through the handle. There is a completely different tool for that: A compact right-angle impact. DeWALT doesn’t make a compact one yet but Rigid, Kobalt, and others do. Example: Milwaukee M12 Fuel 2564
Edit: Just read the DCF513B manual myself. It doesn’t even mention “impact” unless you count the generic list of terms where it defines one it never even used (“IPM”).

Torque specs are always for tightening & are always slightly less for loosening, across all brands. Also this is not a right angle impact wrench,, only a ratchet.. expect to use it like a hand ratchet to loosen & or snug up fasteners outside of the tools range. It's just faster running the bolt on or off with the use of a motor.

Shop Tool Reviews has done videos on it, and at least in the sizes they used, it's was somewhere between 70-75% of the torque to remove a fastener. I.E. a 100ft lbs torqued bolt maybe only take 70-75ft lbs to remove.

I still like my Dewalt tools vs Milwaukee as I feel they're better built with the trigger feel and ergonomics - again just my opinion. Bro good vid your funny. The 2010 and then not innovating until now, I can't agree with because flexvolt was introduced or teased in 2015 I believe then released in 2016. That was pretty big for Dewalt. It was nice that you could use the batteries in 20v tools as well. Now the ratchet you have is one of the home depot only atomic versions. Just wanted to clear that up as you can't get them at Lowe's. The ones at Lowe's are12v extreme. Also, it's a ratchet not a right angle impact so, most of the torque will be applied manually. Check out Torque Test Channel for comparisons between the 2 pretty interesting results. I'm pretty sure that Dewalt or Stanley rather already made cordless ratchets. Mac branded of course. They make or co make a right angle impact as well as a host of other tools, branded Klein, that use Dewalt batteries.

Indeed. He even incorrectly calls it an “impact ratchet.” Expectations are way out of line with reality. Without putting a hammer’s rotational mass into the fastener, all of the force is applied to your grip… which actually dampens it and requires you to use at least as much force as you would to manually break it free.
Because it has speed and momentum when running the fastener down it will stall at a higher torque than it can subsequently remove in reverse from a full stop. You are supposed to manually break away stuck fasteners by moving it like a traditional ratcheting wrench and then run it the rest of the way with the trigger.
      It’s a nut/bolt runner, not a compact right-angle impact.

One thing nearly every reviewer fails to mention is that Stanley/Black & Decker/DeWalt is an American company and makes many of their tools in North America. Nearly all my DeWalt tools are made in the US or Mexico and that is no accident, I intentionally avoided the Chinese made tools when possible. Milwaukee is owned by TTI, a Chinese company who makes nearly all their stuff in China. Today that matters more than ever, or at least it should to anybody who has been paying attention to world events. Unfortunately I believe the Atomic line is pretty much all made in China.

It is super interesting to follow along who who owns what tool companies, and how these companies buy more and more brands every year.
I think hand tools are even more interesting than power tools since there are fewer hand tool manufacturers. Blows my mind that most husky hand tools are using the same dies and lines that Craftsman used back in the 90s, and that craftsman has now been sent offshore.

I would kind of prefer them putting their R&D into new construction and mechanic tools rather than leaf blowers. I think DeWalt is making the shift to strictly consumer rather than that “prosumer”.
