Roku was the one directly before him. Szeto > Yangchen > Kuruk > Kyoshi > Roku > Aang > Korra. Despite all the changes they did, they all adapted well to the live action version. And they even kept all the fan favorites such as the cabbage guy lol *my cabbages!* Excited for next season!
just think about how different (and possibly much more amazing) it would have been if ATLAB and One piece anime would have been if they didn't 'kidify' it for the cartoon/anime. Like in avatar the cartoon series you see a dude getting hit with a fireball and it looks like a punch. Meanwhile in the live action it goes exactly how you'd think. When I was watching the One Piece live action when I saw the people chained to the stands being forced to cheer for buggy's performance. In the anime it just doesn't seem that bad. But watching it in the live action it not only hits different, but harder and you realize how dark and F'd up it really is.
I think the thing to remember with Azula is we had none of her in season 1, so she hasn't necessarily yet evolved into who she is when she first appears in season 2. You mentioned previously that you though The Beach episode did a bad job of trying to humanize her in animated, I mostly tend to agree overall that there wasn't enough setup for her downfall into paranoia. And yes I recognize speaking any word against animated is treason, but I was 19 when it first aired, so I hold a few minor critiques of it. Now, how well the writers pull it off here is definitely debatable, because there are certainly questionable dialogue choices here and there, but the attempt to work in those facets early on I think will help her character in the long run. As for not resembling Azula, I don't think anyone in the world can sound like Grey DeLisle except Grey DeLisle, so that might be kind of a harsh comparison. I'm withholding judgement until we get season 2 where she really comes to the forefront. Also some fun facts for you: Koh is voiced by George Takei, who aside being someone we all know and love from Star Trek, had a small roll as a Fire Nation General on the animated episode Imprisoned. The Fog of Lost Souls is straight out of Legend of Korra, where our beloved Admiral Zhao ends up. Ep 6 coming up contains some lore pulled from the mainline comic series #2: The Search. I really do love how they've pulled some bits from different media.
