Thanks for the tips. I have used the recording clip for some years now. It is extremely useful when using a manual lens that has no EXIF, so I can record the aperture of the lens and is a very easy way to remember how photos were taken. I have also used to record peoples names so I can easily remember them.

Ah yes, that seems like the perfect way to use the audio recording, for manual lens users!

I’ve always ran across those features more or less accidentally but, my goodness what a load of even more extra features. I was always puzzled a bit by the microphone use but adding a sound clip to an image really intrigues me. I don’t think I would have pursued learning these extra features in the manual because, there IS no REAL manual other than a downloaded version which is so difficult to actually study. I’m always picking up something good from any of your videos I watch. Thank you, Robin.

Thanks for the tip for Raw Editing, because it helped me to resolve an issue with flash photography.
Once i moved from M10 to M5 Mark III i realized that photos were bit overexposed and that color tone was different. I already had photo done with M10+FL 600R, and same scene with M5 and FL600R.
    1. New 20Mpix sensor is more sensitive to light... and i mean like by 2-4 stops. But that was just like half of the problem.
    2. Due some reason M10 uses "WB Flash" profile even when set WB Auto, but M5 Mark III uses "Sunny", when set to "WB Auto" even when flash is connected and working. This might be that its more pro equipment so it lets the photographer to adjust more settings as he needs - in this case meaning that it will not autoswitch to flash color profile.
So i took one of the photos which was overexposed and had white light, applied "WB Flash" balance and i lowered exposition in post by 1 stop. It works like charm.

Pre set MF- showing the distance to the subject, ideal to use with Focus Limiter- So focus on subject - see the distance, set focus limiter to say 5m either side of shown distance, stop lens hunting around. Tip on setting both those up and assigning to Fn buttons would be useful for people maybe.

    @ipadista 4 роки тому +4

As always you do nice and useful vids!
Regarding #4 AF Limiter, I use it a lot, but you should probably mention that it is most useful on primes.
Since the Olympus zooms aren't parafocal. And on zooms, the distances are calculated based on max focal length. Any time you zoom wider those numbers will differ to a larger or smaller amount.
Depending on distance, it can be anything from twice the distance or more fully zoomed out. But this depends both on the lens used and the distance, and on no lens or distance is this variation linear, so has to be measured in each case.
So unless on the max focal length, you need to check the "apparent" distance you want to limit yourself too by first setting AF mode to Pre MF in the Live SCP, hit OK, then INFO then you can see what distance the camera think it is as you focus on various things. And based on that set your AF Limiter preferences.
Technical details below can be skipped, above is all you need to know in order to be able to use AF Limiter on zooms...
    ---------------------
What Olympus does, is not actually measuring distance. For each lens (and for zooms this will be in the max focal length) they calculate the distance as step counts for the AF motor, the lowest number is min. Distance and the highest number is infinity.
You can see these numbers with exiftool or similar:
"Focus Step Infinity" & "Focus Step Near"
The value for min focal distance doesn't seem to be showing in exiftools, so I don't know where that is found.
The actual distances is stored as a "Focus Step Count", and this is what the OM-D's save for PreMF and AF limits. And then they translate this into a distance in meters. You can verify this by using Pre MF set it to a distance, then take a photo. Change the amount of zoom as much as possible, leave Pre MF and go back to it again to get the PreMF focal distance again, take a photo, then on both examine "Focus Step Count" - it will be the same, but the lens is more or less out of focus on the 2nd photo.
Since the lenses variance in focus drift depends on both distance and lens, it seems they didn't bother to translate this and only bases their displayed distances on the value of "Focus Step Count"
So you can work around it when using a wider focal length, but it is something you need to be aware of!

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 роки тому

I have used the focus limiter on 40-150mm F2.8 PRO lens, shooting MMA and Muay Thai fights. The reason was I needed to focus through the fight cage/grills. The focus limiter worked wonderfully, took me a bit of time to estimate the distance from my seat to the cage but once I found it, the AF will not find the cage anymore. Not sure about your explanation on the focus limiter not working for zoom lens, I have thousands of images from these fights, I'd say most of them won't be possible without the help of the focus limiter.

    • @ipadista

:-D The recording of ambient sound I never thought of, but using it for taking notes I do. As someone else mention, with a manualt lens the exif does not tell, so a note is good. And name of people in the pic.
Pixel mapping i tried and had no clue what for haha.
I wonder if the editing when using art-filters can be made a bit mor subtle? I like them, but they are a bit to obvious at times, just adding a 80% or chosen value would have been helpful.

@@robinwong thank you for confirming. I have decided to get this over lumix g85 maybe this week. This will be my first camera in entering professional photography. Another thing if you dont mind, what lenses can you recommend for a starter like me?

How about the DOF preview? Thats a hidden features

DOF preview is not hidden at all. The button in front of the camera has direct access to it!

Another cool hidden feature is the cluster focus tracking by activating all the focus points, although I don't use it much as I prefer the C-AF + Tracking since the firmware update. On the subject of focus, please could you shed some light on C-AF Sensitivity. I seem to remember an Olympus tech saying it depends on how quick or erratic a subject is moving against how busy the background is.

I don't think the cluster AF is a hidden feature. Olympus did promote this quite heavily during E-M1 Mark II launch, but I guess the hype was shortlived.

The first feature doesn't seem to be available on my EM10 II

Confused over the separation of spot and AF. I use back button focus (AEL), and not sure if that effects why I can't separate the AF from the metering. Can't tell what dials you are turning to change settings in video.

Hence I don't recommend back button focus. II is inefficient, and the normal AF mode works just fine.

@@robinwong Maybe for your type of photography. They put a button on there for a reason.

Any suggestions on where to get an Olympus Camera in KL? Thanks

I'd say any camera shop which is an authorized dealer works.
