He and Yda really helped me understand my place in Eorzea (I started as an Archer/Bard in Gridania as well), and they were probably the Scions I bonded with the most other than fellow catgirl Y'shtola. So yeah, losing him was heartwrenching.
He was *fully* aware he was likely just about to die, and wanted to make sure that, should that happen, all of his allies- his friends- wouldn't be there to share in his fate.
Woah, I didn't realize it then, but him saying "I bid thee farewell AGAIN, my dear Yda," is hinting at the thing. You stormblood people know what I'm saying.

@@Flexliite I would like to correct a little mistake: Papalymo knowed from the beginning that it wasn't Yda. Lyse came to him and asked for him to put the mark on her neck where her sister had hers. The mark all from the "Scions of the Seventh Dawn" had somewhere on their body so she coul pretend to be her sister. When Papalymo died it vanished. That's when she tell all of us that she isn't Yda but her sister Lyse and Thancred, Urianger & co. smiled and just said "We knowed it all the time".
It made sense actually. The abyss is death sentence to EVERYONE, even the strongest of dragons. Ascians and Warrior of Darkness, however, are neither living beings nor are from their world.

It should. It's "Answers - Reprise", the tune used during the final moments of FFXIV (original). It became the main music of every server while players were forced to watch Bahamut descending to destroy the original game-world. Variations of it are also used in the Final Coil of Bahamut. If you hear it - no matter how beautiful it sounds - it means bad, bad, bad shit is going down.
If you think this was haunting, head to search and type "last 11 minutes of Eorzea". Special side-note, if you also re-watch the old FMV, you'll also see the Warriors of Darkness.
RopeDrink Incorrect. They were the Warriors of Light; in prerendered cutscenes they used a generic set of characters, one for each of the base Disciples of War and Magic, equalling 8 excluding those added only in ARR.

@0ddMonk3y I wouldn't say that. When you see Omega fighting Shinryu, you have to ask yourself how much damage Shinryu would have done to the region - if not the ENTIRE WORLD - if Papalymo hadn't bought the time for the Scions to get Omega on the scene to fight him. Yeah, it helped Zenos indirectly, but we had time to get stronger and to defeat it/him at that time. Papalymo bought the world and the WoL the most precious gift possible - time.
I didn't believe it, I kept expecting him to come back like we see characters do all the time. Imagine my disappointment when I realized he wouldn't be coming back. Took me a long time to accept it
Omfg has it been that long sense I did this?? I feel like I just ran through it but it’s past 2 years ago..... ff14 never cease to amaze me love this game
God fucken damnit. I haven't even moved on from the Steps of Faith... or Minfillia and the Warriors of Darkness.. or Ysayle and Haurchefant... Why must this MMO hurt me so
You know I hate to make his sacrifice seem like it was in vain but man this just created even more problems in the long run. We weren't initially allowed to engage Shinryu because we assumed he was even stronger than Bahamut. So we used Omega which led to a borderline nuclear explosion when he clashes with Shinryu. On top of that we just ended up having to fight an even stronger Shinryu who clearly wasn't as powerful or as destructive as Bahamut. We also had to fight Omega who was capable of rewriting the rules of reality at like 20% of it's maximum strength. Papalymo nearly caused the end of the world.
The WoL at this point only beat Nidhogg with the help of Hraesvelgrs eye and Shinryu was MUCH MUCH stronger than Nidhogg. Papalymo made the right choice here, Shinryu was a calamity waiting to happen. Only Zenos at this point and time could take Shinryu outside of Omega, the very same Zenos that practically one shot us in our first meeting with him. And then easily beat us again in our 2nd meeting with him. It wasn't until our THIRD meeting with Zenos that we were finally above his level.
In short, Shinryu WOULD have been a Calamity if Papalymo hadn't sealed him. To quote someone else down in these comments, Papalymo bought us the most precious gift possible: Time. Time to prepare a counter. Time to get stronger. Let's mix in some game mechanics for an explanation: Shinryu is a level 70 trial boss. He was summoned when we were still level 60. By sealing him, it bought us time to counter it with Omega, and the fight weakened both of them enough that we had time to level up to 70 before having to deal with either Shinryu *or* Omega.
I like how this was recommend to me after papalymo bt and fr came out for dissdia final fantasy opera omnia the mobile game this is his burst animation 8:34 to 8:56
It's been awhile since I watched that first part. I'm happy to have started in Gridania and to have joined the Flames to have felt just a little bit closer to Yda, Papalymo, and unwillingly, Ilberd, too
But what he did delayed it much longer, it was explained that those who died with him are the best of Ala Mhigo's fighters, hence why in SB we ran around recruiting people.
@@RoyalKnightish It's a tough question to give a definitive answer to - he forced the Alliance's hand, which brought them into the war to free Ala Mhigo, but at the same time the best of Ala Mhigo's own were slaughtered. I suppose the question boils down to... if he hadn't gone the "sacrifice everybody to summon Shinryu" route and actually preserved his men's lives, would the Alliance still have felt forced into following through?
@@maxharris4722 Yeah, you're thinking of the original release of FF14; they closed the game down, played the "End of an Era" cutscene in-game at the moment of server shutdown, then rebuilt the game from the ground up and re-released it as "A Realm Reborn"
This entire cutscene is abso-freaking-lutly AMAZING!!! One of the best videogame sequences of all time! I love that sound effect heard when we see Papalymo's shining smile of absolute self-certainty! Not an ounce of regret for what he has chosen!
Emotions and feelings that DT failed to give me, I missed the gutwretching and tearful scenes. DT had its strengths, but I deeply wished DT moved me like the previous MSQ storylines.
Sad thing is it end up being a pointless sacrifice. Seal didn't hold Shinryu. Then they tried Omega and it failed. Resulting in the Warriors of Light ultimately having to fight him and actually stop him. Sooner everyone realizes that ONLY the Warriors of Light can stop a Primal the better and we wont have to loose any more beloved characters.
Papalymo new that the spell would'nt seal Shinryu he decided to activate it to buy people time for a counterattack fully knowing it would kill him. As far as story the GC leader's plan was to send WOL to face the primal like any other occasion but that dude from Garlemand showed up and offered to use Omega which of course failed and we had to go and kill it.
It wasn’t pointless. The seal was to buy them time. If not for the seal shinryu would’ve been thrashing around a lot sooner ( and if you beat this content before stormblood released you would have spent weeks looking up at the blue sphere in the sky and remembering papalymo)
I didn’t really feel anything when this happened sadly, didn’t have the same impact as when Hauchefaunt died. I feel like the game didn’t really do a good job making me care about papalymo. They tried to fix that in the patches, but it wasn’t enough time to build him up imo.
Yea I felt kinda sad, but since both Papalymo and Y'da were absent for so long I kinda got mad at them, I didn't really understand what they were doing that they didn't let us know they were alive :/ I just started Stormblood so maybe something more will be explained. I was so emotionally invested in Ishgard and then have these two appear so casually...and we didn't even get to see their reaction to what happened to Minfilia...it felt rushed, I don't know :/
Probably because a lot of us started in Thanalan, or La Noscea, so we got to see barely any of Lyse and Papalymo before they got forgotten about for an entire expansion. This game is great about just sidelining it's so-called main characters until Shadowbringers where they're all together, and stay that way for a while. (except for a couple lesser characters, but I've said too much already.)
Few talk about Ilbred, but the VA really captured the desperate yet sinister freedom fighter's personality with the voice acting. Honestly out of all the epic cutscenes this game had so far, nothing comes close to this one. There is something about showing the raw brutality of war and desperation to reclaim what was forcefully taken. This was probably the most real, haunting and bloodcurdling the game ever got.
I still love how closely Papalymo's sacrifice here mirrors Louiseux's at Cartenau. Right down to the smile of satisfaction.

Why must this MMO hurt me so
running msq w/o yda or papalala is just sadness :(
This scene made me cry on many levels and screwed with my head for about an hour
I'm happy to have started in Gridania and to have joined the Flames to have felt just a little bit closer to Yda, Papalymo, and unwillingly, Ilberd, too
You know what, he actually succeeded in his goal, Ala mihigo was freed
But what he did delayed it much longer, it was explained that those who died with him are the best of Ala Mhigo's fighters, hence why in SB we ran around recruiting people.
@@RoyalKnightish he needed the best to die as it fueled Shinryu.
I'm still upset I can't seem to find a papalymo tribute
Just noticed that the same ambient, eerie music that played in the final hours of FF 11 is playing in the background. Amazing.
ff11 is still running
@@nokiabean i think there are maybe some personally owned servers out there, but square pulled the plug on 11 before arr started
@@maxharris4722 do you mean ffxiv 1.0? square are still supporting xi, there's an event going on rn
Answers playing in the background KILLED ME 😭😭
I couldn't have cared less for Papalymo before this point. But this point? This right here? Coolest play a character had made until Shadowbringers
Omega was playing with his food XD
Papalymo is the GigaChad of the Scions
one of the few cs I regretted skipping...
Why it had to be my beloved papalymo. I cry everytime I see this, bring him back already 😢😢
The omega beam at 12:10 seems familiar.. Its from FFXII magick spell named 'scathe' lol😍
reference to Final Fantasy V, Shinryu and Omega are rivals and secret bosses on the game
it’s honestly pretty fucking stupid that they didn’t just destroy the eyes in the first place instead of chucking them into the abyss
Emotions and feelings that DT failed to give me, I missed the gutwretching and tearful scenes.
DT had its strengths, but I deeply wished DT moved me like the previous MSQ storylines.
Papalymo... He died for our sins.
When Ilberd goes *SPLAT*
As said, he bought us time. That was his intent. And Omega weakened it for us.
Omega didn't fail. Omega sealed Shinryu, that's why Zenos had him in a cage on top of the Royal Menagerie.
Ff14 dialog level is so high for me lol
This whole sequence is so damn good
I didn’t really feel anything when this happened sadly, didn’t have the same impact as when Hauchefaunt died.
I was so emotionally invested in Ishgard and then have these two appear so casually...and we didn't even get to see their reaction to what happened to Minfilia...it felt rushed, I don't know :/
bless this potatoe normies soul
for he existed
I don't understand why I'm always alone mourning papalymo :'(
Probably because a lot of us started in Thanalan, or La Noscea, so we got to see barely any of Lyse and Papalymo before they got forgotten about for an entire expansion.
