what Saint-Saëns could do with four crotchets and two minims (the Andante's opening phrase)... Has ever been a French composer been so wonderfully economical and so inspired at the same time? No wonder Ravel looked up to him so much.
This is the superb cellist Jonathan Moser with the Stuttgart SWR Orchestra conducted by Fabrice Ballon [on Hassler Records] - comes with the famous Saint-Saens Cello Concerto #1 and other shorter works for cello and orchestra- all wonderful performances of these great works. Saint-Saens remains under appreciated- a great composer. thank you.
Wow! I cannot tell who uploaded this magnificent piece and magnificent performance but I truly thank you. Despite the fact that I know and have played a great deal of the Romantic repertoire, I never new until now that Saint-Saens wrote a second concerto for cello. I must pass this on to some of my musician friends. -Alan Carriero
Yes, totally different from the A minor. As a clever eclectic, his lesser-known symphonies and concerti, almost all top quality, can fool the unfamiliar listener, as to the composer.
According to the Wikipedia article on this work, the various sections should be split thus: 1. Allegro moderato e maestoso 2. Andante sostenuto - Cadenza - Allegro non troppo [recapitulation of 1st Movt] - Molto allegro [Coda]
forestsoceansmusic just goes to show you can’t always trust Wikipedia! If you see the printed score, the Andante is connected to the Allegro moderato, and that cadenza is not designated as such, as well as being very short. The “real” cadenza is identified as such between the Allegro non troppo, which in my professional opinion is not at all a recap, and the (second) cadenza is substantial.
It is Johannes Moser, with the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, Fabrice Ballon conducting. It is a superb concerto- I am so glad that it is getting more recordings, it is evidently fiendishly difficult [sounds it-amazing!]
