    Rostropivich was not only the best cellist ever, he was also a human right hero in communist Russia, - Saharov, the scientist found refuge in Rostropovich's home when he was harassed by the authorities for his views on human freedom. And the Russian gov. was so respectful of Rostropovich's international fame that he could shield Saharov from persecution.

      He also sheltered Solzhenitsyn... Once, in San Francisco, he was conducting and into the first notes of the piece, an Iphone rang out a tune. He stopped the orchestra; examined the notes in a rather obvious fashion; turned to the infiltrator and said: 'It's not written here'. He got some deserved applause.

      @@nicholaskiim No it is incorrect. I play this piece and the third movement begins a few lines later. It sounds like it could be the start of the third movement, but it's just using a piece of the first movement to bridge the second into the third.

    • @haobaichen3307
      @haobaichen3307 5 років тому +1

      @Trey Coughlin Actually if you own the international edition (which is largely considered to be the most accurate) you will find that at tempo primo (rehearsal H) the soloist finishes a slur from the measure before and then has almost 19 measures of rest (18 and 3/4 to be exact). Then, at rehearsal J, the soloist has a quarter rest, then he begins the melody. Therefore, the third movement does in fact start with what you referred to as “the bridge” to the third movement. If, however, your conductor referred to rehearsal J as the third movement, then by all means you are correct. Since there is no significant marking signifying the beginning of a new movement at J, we can infer that movement three will begin at the tempo change.

      Trey Coughlin I mean, technically (I play this too,) as in the international edition edited by Leonard Rose, each movement is indicated by a distinct tempo marking, Allegretto con moto for second movement, and measure 373, or 10:45 is marked Tempo I, and is also where the main theme returns from the first movement, making 10:45 the third movement.

      @@tylerngai568 Thank you, finally someone understands.

    • @trecou
      @trecou 5 років тому +3

      @@tylerngai568 Actually, it turns out we were all wrong. I believe Saint Saens intended to make his concerto one long concerto, not meant to be broken up into movements. Different editions added in tempo markings and such, but not necessarily separate movements.
      When I played this for a competition, I was doing the first movement only. But it transitions so smoothly into the second movement, that I couldn't just stop and the end of the first. I had to cut to the very end of the entire piece to make it sound whole.
      This is why we think the third movement starts in different spots. We have different editions, which changes our perspective based on where the editors placed the tempo markings.
      Other concertos such as the Lalo concerto in D minor clearly marks the end and start of each movement, literally breaking up the bars and printing "Movement 2". You can essentially play any one movement at a performance, and it sounds like a complete song.
