Hi... home exercise hack.....on the first exercise where you slide you foot up and back. A GREAT, cheap way to do that at home is to use Furniture moving sliders. They fit easily under your heel. Slide really well and are rough enough on top not to slip out from under your foot!!!!
Dear Drs. Brad and Paul, Now post full knee replacement 9 days. Retired here in the mountains of the Valencian region of Spain. Before the op. I watched just about all of your lessons and found them so very practical and helpful so a very big thank you to you both. The humor makes the watch worth while even if you’re not having an op. Excellent medicine. Following you post op. advice and knee very straight and bending well too . Here in our small village our doctor and nurse come to us so twice a week I get to have dressing changed and checked up. I had the op. in a private hospital but through the Spanish Health system due to Covid queues, excellent. So thank you again for your dedication and service to everyone. If you are ever passing this way and want a beautiful paella let me know! Gracias por todo, Rob.
Wow Rob that’s a great story! So glad we can be part of your journey. All the best through the rest of your recovery. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Gentlemen: I had my right knee done June 25, 2022 and my left knee done on July 8, 2023. I did my Pre-Op and Post-Op exercises with my Physiotherapist. The right TKR is now a year and 7 months old and the left one 7 months past. I am exercising and taking short walks, trying to bring both knees into my NEW world and things are going well. There is still a little stiffness now and again, but no real pain. I also work 16 - 20 hours a week as a Part-Time Customer Service Rep at a local community company. My question is: once the snow melts and our local 9 hole Golf Course is up and running, am I safe to have a go at 9 holes? Because of my knees prior to TKR, I haven't played for almost 4 years. What do you think?? Oh by the way I'll be 81 by the time the course is ready! Any thoughts??
The videos are excellent ! I just had a TKR on April 5th. I started these exercises 3 months before so my sugical leg was extended to zero degrees and bent back to 134 degrees. That sure helped with my post surgery P.T. and am already getting much of my strength back after 2 weeks. I bought an ice machine to circulate ice water around my knee joint too. Keep up with these great videos !
I am 67 and had a full knee replacement on Monday, 17 August at 10.00 am and afterwards I found the major problem wasn’t the trying to walk, it was the getting in and out of bed to go to the bathroom that caused pure havoc, with the nurses doing their best to support my leg to the floor but I was fit to scream. Then I remembered you using the strap to support lifting the leg in the video and I looked around and saw the belt in my bathrobe which I quickly pulled out and wrapped it around the bottom of my foot as shown in your exercise video and I then personally, holding tightly to the straps, shuffled to the edge of the bed and managed to gently control my foot from the bed to the floor and on my return, lift it back into bed again. When I was discharged today at 9.00 am, Thursday, 20 August, 2020 ( 3 days in hospital) the hospital porter and my husband were stumped as to how to get me and “my leg” that is, into my husband’s Bakkie (4 wheeler truck). I had kept my belt, hereinafter known as, ”SLED” (Strap Leg Enablement Device) in my handbag and, whilst being supported by my husband, used it to lift my leg inside the cab who was then able to lift me gently onto the seat. I cannot thank you enough, and anyone who has been through this operation and aftercare will understand how much pain and trauma this “simple idea” has saved me from. And now if you will excuse me I need to find my SLED, nature calls.....q
@@TalkingWithDocs In your second video you demonstrated using the foot on the unoperated knee to help move the leg out of bed however my unoperated knee is due to be operated and is also in bad shape so that procedure isn't an option. You should have shown how to lift the foot using a strap. Otherwise the exercises are fantastic and thank you.
Just wanted to say thank you. I just made the decision to have TKR in the spring and I've got a lot of anxiety about it. This video helped relieve some of that as I now know there are things I can do beforehand to assist with my post-recovery rehab. Very grateful.
I hope you're recovering well. I just had my left knee done 2nd November, 2022. Amazingly, this one feels totally different and is healing faster than when I had my right knee done in 2020. I did an exercise program 1 year before I had my left knee done so exercising really helps before TKR.

Day 3 after TKR. What I am GREATLY appreciating is the strengthening exercises that I ALSO did on my GOOD leg (including practicing standing on one leg). The 2 major benefits for me (80+ male): - I use my good leg under the ankle of my bad leg to lower it onto floor from bed - and the same technique to get back into bed. No pain! - the stability I have when standing - at a counter or at the bathroom fixtures. I always make sure I have solid support from my walker or counter top, but the added confidence of the stable good leg is wonderful.
You guys are SO AWESOME!! I just went to a PT yesterday for exercises to do before my total knee replacement. The PT gave me the exact exercises that you just showed! He also added a Hip Abduction Sidelying exercise. My knee is bone on bone and totally covered in bone spurs and I am so out of line that the layman can notice it while I am walking. I really enjoyed your video and I like how you make it light-hearted. Thanks!! You're the Best!!
Hi Sherrie. Thanks so much for the kind words! Good luck with your upcoming surgery. You are doing the right thing by being prepared. Keep us posted! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Going into hospital on Monday for a knee replacement, I am so glad a friend recommended your exercises before my op. Thank you all so much, so clear and easy to follow.
I'm on the waiting list for bilateral total knee replacements. These videos are really helpful and give me an insight into what to expect which keeps my expectations more realistic. Thanks so much.
I just had back surgery last March and my knee has destroyed my exercise routine, now the knee is being replaced. I am diligently doing this routine and have gotten my knee straight (finally) and am confident that this routine has been the reason. Thank you. I am actually looking forward to getting better.
You guys are great. I'm a 55 yr old male scheduled for full knee replacement on Dec 1 2022. I'm so mad because a had a meniscus repair that didn't take along with arthritis. Why I'm mad is my P.T did not do any of these exercises with me after surgery. They put a stim on me did some leg marches in a chair and kick outs f & b. Thats all they did 2xs a week. I will be definitely doing your exercises b4 surgery and im changing therapist for sure. Thanks your all great
Having TKR in 6 weeks. Started prehab today. So great to know that I can actually do something that will improve my post-op recovery. Glad that I found this video. Was not aware of prehab!
Exactly. Neither my prospective surgeon or PT I had after knee injury has ever mentioned the importance of prehab! They seem to just want to rush me into the TKR surgery. Really appreciate this. Subscribed and doing the exercises.
I am so glad I found this. I am going to have a knee replacement and my knee has been bad since 1976 when I was 18 and it has finally gotten to the point that I can't tolerate the pain. So I have babied this knee for 45 years and was wondering what I can do to have a better outcome. I don't have an appt. yet but want to give myself every advantage I can. So thank you, thank you so much.
I really felt like y’all were talking directly to me!!! I appreciate these exercises because I do walk with a flexion contractor and it really does hurt to straighten the knee and it really does tire me out after a day of shopping at Walmart!! I’ve been to the doctor twice for the injection in the knee and will be returning after 2 months from the last injection to get another one (3) for a break from this pain. The injections really work for me till I can actually get the knee surgery. Thanks for this video. So much better than going to a PT or the doctor’s office.👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
This series is so fantastic, so clear and informative, relaxed and entertaining. Really a great model for other doctors who want to do public information videos.
Thank you so much for your kind words. We have worked hard to try and provide something useful and interesting. Best of luck with your surgery. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Another excellent video - thank you! It's good to stress how vitally important pre-op exercises are. I did them religiously prior to my TKR last August & as soon as I came round from the anaesthetic I started doing a circulation exercise, (legs out straight & alternate toes pointing forward). Gradually I brought in pushing my knees down into the bed, sliding my knee up & letting my knee slightly drop. Physios can always tell too who has done their pre-op exercises & who hasn't. Usually the first time you try to get out of bed will show if you have been 'good'. So if you wang a nice physio do your exercises! On occasions it does really hurt, especially after surgery & probably for about 2-6 weeks after but gosh after that apart from occasional twinges, usually because your new knee has been doing too much & not enough rest, you suddenly realise you're not taking any where near the amount of pain relief you did before! 😊
Im very grateful for this video! Im having TKR in June. Honestly, ive read some horrible things and it scared me. But its nice to know i can actively do something beforehand. I will be as prepared as i can be!
I am sure both of you are very good surgeons. It is great that you are learning some exercises for patients to do before total knee replacement in order to expand your knowledge to related areas.
Thank you so much. This is so helpful. I am going to get started immediately. Great to know that I can improve my situation with these excercises. Thank you!!
Glad to have found this video. I am looking at knee replacement in April,’22. I had two bad falls , one before I had triple bypass last fall and another bad fall a month after. I had to wait almost three months before he would consider surgery due to a series of three shots over three weeks in my knee. Surgery is not recommended until three months have passed. So I have been in PT during this time. These six exercises I am very familiar with! I am 67 and can’t wait to be healed up and ready to enjoy my garden and the lake I live on,,,, once given the okay! I have had Fibromyalgia and a low back injury for 20 years now so the four deteriorating discs have made some exercises difficult.
I had my total knee replacement on my left knee 2 months ago. My doctor didn't give me hardly any pain meds and did not tell me about this pre-hab. I have been doing my exercises and have gotten really good motion in this knee. I am so glad I found this video! Thank you guys for this, yall are great. I am going to have tkr on my right knee in about March and I am going to start doing these exercises right away. Maybe the pain won't be so bad next time.
Love these videos docs. I am having a knee replacement in one month and your videos are 1) putting my mind at ease, 2) giving me some great pre-hab ideas and 3) informing me! Thank you for taking the time to make them.
Thank you ever so much for this video. I was searching for videos on how to prepare months in advance of surgery, especially since i'm not so decrepit that i can't do something to prepare, but found very litttle. So, happy to have found this one. (I walk 2 miles total to & fro the neighborhood supermarket every other day.) I have a R knee flexion contraction btw. Plan to have tkr surgery in November.
I am prepping now for TKR this spring. These are some of the same exercises my PT gave me for my daily pre-op routine. The videos are excellent and reinforce the importance of the pre-op physical therapy.
Thanks Docs. Had my knee replacement surgery in April, horrible scar, but it’s great to be able to walk without a cane n be pain free. Your videos were really helpful to watch before hand. It was very empowering knowing what to expect PRE n post opp. Thanks xx
Hi Deborah. Thanks so much and we are so glad that we could help get you through this. Yes the scar can often be wide due to the pull of the soft tissues while bending. Continued good luck and thanks for watching!
The scar is horrid, but it will heal, and when it is start using Medurma, which is for scarring, expensive, but worth it. You can hardly see my scar now.
I'm planning on having my knees replaced next winter and have been wondering what kind or pre op exercises to do. My knees are both bone on bone so walking is extremely painful. In fact about ten years or so ago, the doc said he'd replaced better looking knees but also suggested waiting as long as I could because techniques and technology are always improving. The only time my knees don't hurt is when I'm laying flat in bed so it's time. I had planned on getting it done this past winter but that dang Covid thing hit. These videos are great, I've subscribed so I plan on watching more of them. Very good presentation while being entertaining as well.
Both my knees were totally shot. I could hardly walk. Had one knee done it took 1 year for a full recovery. I also had to go back into the hospital be put under & have my knee manipulated because it wouldn't bend any further. Was in physio at the hospital for 6 months plus doing physio at home 3 times a day. I had to wait a year & a half to get the next knee replaced. Same problem had to have the knee manipulated. Same a year for recovery. I just about gave up I became very depressed being laid up that long, extreme pain & second knee replacement all the opioids for pain made me so sick. I could not tolerate the pain. Got CBD oil within 10 min. of taking it I was pain free. Took it until I could tolerate the pain. Now I have no pain, can walk normal, my legs are now straight, can walk up & down stairs normal. I can now say it was totally worth it. One tip for anyone getting a full knee replacement is make sure you follow everything for your physio & be consistent with it. By doing that it pays off in the end & how good of a bend you will have. I had an excellent surgeon & I'm very pleased with the outcome. I got my life back & able to do things I never could.
@@lilianarodriguez8056 I don't think it matters what brand you use it's the milligrams. My make is Cartel it's 500mg & a grape flavour. It is in a small glass bottle I took half of the syringe & it took my pain away. Increase the dose until it takes the pain away. I found out the longer you need to take the CBD oil it doesn't work as well because your body gets use to it. It really took my pain away when I was so desperate. Hope this helped.
I cannot stress enough to do your knee exercises 3 times a day 7 days a week!! Going to physio 2 to 3 times a week is not enough....you have to do the exercises on your own at home!!! I won't kid you...when you first start these exercises pre or post..you think what the heck was I thinking! But the effort is worth. And YES...I had a total right knee replacement in 2018! I have no pain, my walking gate is perfect!
Thankfully I still have great range of motion pre surgery. I am getting mine replaced the 31st. When it went bone on bone three years ago, it swelled up big time, and my job had me on my feet all day. I forced the knee to bend to be able to get in and out of my truck for a few days. I learned from my first knee surgery, that ice is my best friend. Once I got the swelling out, the pain was much easier to tolerate.
@@TalkingWithDocs thanks I am looking forward to far less icing after healing. I did subscribe since I watch a few of your videos that were very informative.
This video is awesome and was so needed. People telling me they are having a TKR, think I am cracks when I tell them to do pre surgical physo on their Quads. Even if it is only the straight leg lift. Thank you everyone.
Hi Lyn. You are very welcome. We feel strongly that patients need to do their part in getting prepared for surgery and exercise is critical. Thanks for watching.
Something that helped me was to sit in a chair, lift the hip of the affected knee and pull your foot back as far as you can, then slowly lower the hip a little at a time until you can totally lower the hip to the chair.
Just found these videos. Want to avoid surgery. Working on weight loss. Going to physiotherapist and doing pre surgery exercises even though not scheduled. Thank you for the great information and so simply put. I will pass on your videos to others in the same position.
In the PSS Clinic I recommend non weight bearing cardio exercises (stationary bike, swimming etc) in addition to the muscle strengthening ones the physiotherapists teach. From the anesthesia point of view we like people to live through the experience to enjoy their new knee/hip. I call it their homework assignment and I’m going to start recommending your videos from now on.
@@TalkingWithDocs PreSurgical Screening Clinic. After 30 years of anesthesia it’s my pre retirement project. I evaluate and screen people for surgeries.
Love your videos as a Canadian living in Australia about to have TKR videos are very helpful. Love your Canadian accent and sense of humour. Thank you.
I watched all your knee replacement videos and followed your advice! I am four weeks post surgery and doing great! You helped me so much, thank you! I tell everyone I can to watch your videos and prepare for surgery. Plus, your videos made me laugh!
Great video! I had total knee replacement three years ago and was prescribed prehab. While some of the exercises were different than described in the video I believe they made a big difference in helping me through recovery. Some of the exercises in the video were geared toward re-hab in my case.
I am due for a knee replacement in 6 weeks time, in England we do not seem to have these videos which to be honest belays a lot of fears that a patient has. Often we have very little contact with the doctor the Q & A that we have are not really addressed due to the time limit on the appointment, often the doctor seems to think we already know what is going to happen. We are laymen most of the time we do not understand the technical jargon used so we end up being word blinded by the doctor. I watched two of your videos, one what happens during the replacement and this one I learnt wore from these two videos than any appointments with hospital staff. I do however watch a video of a replacement and wish I had not. Knock me out do what you have to do but do not want to know the gory details. Thank you guys your videos were very helpful. Jeff.
You are amazing! I had one tkr done and that was enough for me. I think it's great that you are showing people how to manage in the bathroom. Thanks for sharing Mike!
This was very helpful. I didn't need to see the gory details of surgery. I needed to hear exactly what you talked about: the practical details of recovery at home and the answers to questions about such things as travel. Please do include some information about the benefit of having a "comfort-height" (taller) toilet, together with handrails on either side of the toilet. Also, do you need to have someone walk you to and assist you with toileting? If so, for how long? While you mentioned narcotic medication, it might be helpful to some to plainly state that one of the reasons that it is important to have a supportive person present during the early days is so that you don't accidentally take too much narcotic medication.
I’m having knee replacement next month I also want to be prepared as best I can be and it’s help me manage my anxiety by learning and preparing as best I can
You are so welcome Susan. Congratulations on the hip being done. The knee is a little more work but you got this! Keep us posted. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.
My first PT appointment one week after surgery comments: If it weren’t for all the bruising I would seriously question your surgery date. If we had more patients like you we would be out of business. I’m going to give you this exercise so I can feel like I’ve done something today. Thank you for all of the pre surgery tips and exercises!
Surgery date 1/17/22 LTKR … Arizona… thanks so much for this. Man, that first exercise…I didn’t realize I couldn’t bend very far… sad. 73 years. Going to watch all your videos.
Hi Lulu’s Mom. We love Arizona and are so jealous of your weather. Best of luck on Jan 17. Hopefully we can help get you ready! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
@@TalkingWithDocs oh man thanks for that! Your videos are so wonderful…I will mention to my surgeon I now have a team of docs! ❤️ PS Of course I have subscribed...so happy I found you.
Thank you this video, it is really helpful! I’m in Canada on a waiting list for a knee replacement, & I found this today and I can do these exercise to get ready for my surgery. Thanks again😊
Hello talking with Doctors, I really appreciate your videos plus the humor with the seriousness. I am a new subscriber to your channel. Also, I am 49 years young.. and I'm having a total knee replacement next month, November 3rd. I'm so nerveous, writing this right now gets me anxiety thinking about the pain I'm going to go thru and the fear of not being able to continue my lawn care business after it. I keep asking myself am I doing the right thing? Have you ever done knee replacements on patients my age who have business that are physical demanding and know the outcome? I hope you can give me some encouraging feedback. I appreciate what you do for us. Thank you Roy
Hi Roy. So yes, we have done many operations on patients with physical jobs. Every patient is different but often they can return to their jobs depending on their prior physical health and obviously their outcome. It is normal to be nervous. Do your physio. Take your medication. Best of luck to you Roy! Thanks for watching and subscribing.
You are so lovable and professional and funny and wow, thank you so much for these informative videos. I need knee replacement and wanted to know all about this process. You have answered tons of questions. The actual surgery portion was pretty intense but now I know what it is. Thank you so much! And honestly, you can go to TV with this act, once you finish being doctors!!!
You know, I have been asking the surgeons nurse and everyone what I should be doing, and CRICKETS, I tried stationary bike at gym, and leg curl and extension and was in so much pain after. I like the fact that the PT said if pain subsides in 24 hours it's ok. Now I knowvthevexercises are worth a little pain. I knew I needed Pre Op exercises, sad that it isnt told to patients often! Now I have17 days to prepare, thank you!
Hi Barbara. Stationary bike is great. We prefer half squats and lunges to the leg extension machine which really puts a lot of stress on your patella. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Great video! I'm waiting until I reach Medicare (2023) before I get my left TKA. My doc told me yesterday to start prehab to get my knee strong before the procedure.
I so appreciate this information…I’m having surgery in less than a week & have started these exercises…anything to help me along to a speedier recovery…thank you so much for the valuable advice
Thank you, this is VERY helpful! You provided great instructions with lots of details per exercise! 😀😀 Edit:. Day Two:. these are SO helpful!! Thank you!
Hi Sunny All Day. Congrats! You are very welcome. We are so glad we can help in any small way. All the best. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Great video , I’m going to have knee replacement on both knees , and I’m really scared , I have been postponed the surgery , thank you 🙏 for this video , .
Thank you so much. Wonderful presentation & extremely helpful, not only physically but emotionally as well. Great to know that I can improve my situation with these excercises. Thank you!!
Hi... home exercise hack.....on the first exercise where you slide you foot up and back. A GREAT, cheap way to do that at home is to use Furniture moving sliders. They fit easily under your heel. Slide really well and are rough enough on top not to slip out from under your foot!!!!
That is an awesome hack Jax! Thank you for taking the time to comment. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did
Dear Drs. Brad and Paul,
Now post full knee replacement 9 days.
Hi Valerie. So glad we could help. Thanks for sharing your story. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
Glad we could help Peter. Thanks for watching and subscribing
I hope you're recovering well. I just had my left knee done 2nd November, 2022. Amazingly, this one feels totally different and is healing faster than when I had my right knee done in 2020. I did an exercise program 1 year before I had my left knee done so exercising really helps before TKR.
I am scheduled for a knee replacement, I know what it like because I had a hip replacement. Not as scared as before

So please tell us how everything went and how these exercises helped.
Day 3 after TKR. What I am GREATLY appreciating is the strengthening exercises that I ALSO did on my GOOD leg (including practicing standing on one leg).
The 2 major benefits for me (80+ male):
- I use my good leg under the ankle of my bad leg to lower it onto floor from bed - and the same technique to get back into bed. No pain!
- the stability I have when standing - at a counter or at the bathroom fixtures. I always make sure I have solid support from my walker or counter top, but the added confidence of the stable good leg is wonderful.
I'm so grateful for this video. I'm due to have a total knee replacement in 3 weeks. I'm starting these tonight. Thank you
You got this!

Exactly. Neither my prospective surgeon or PT I had after knee injury has ever mentioned the importance of prehab! They seem to just want to rush me into the TKR surgery. Really appreciate this. Subscribed and doing the exercises.
This is a very good video-well presented and very useful
Thanks!
Hi Nancy. Good luck to you. Thanks for watching and subscribing
Very welcome AnnSue!

Glad you liked it Loraine. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing with someone if you did.
Im very grateful for this video! Im having TKR in June. Honestly, ive read some horrible things and it scared me. But its nice to know i can actively do something beforehand. I will be as prepared as i can be!
You can do it!

Good luck to you Lady!! Thanks for watching and subscribing
That sounds like a perfect plan. All the best

Nice
@@marneb311 Hi There, thank you for that x
I'm planning on having my knees replaced next winter and have been wondering what kind or pre op exercises to do. My knees are both bone on bone so walking is extremely painful. In fact about ten years or so ago, the doc said he'd replaced better looking knees but also suggested waiting as long as I could because techniques and technology are always improving. The only time my knees don't hurt is when I'm laying flat in bed so it's time. I had planned on getting it done this past winter but that dang Covid thing hit. These videos are great, I've subscribed so I plan on watching more of them. Very good presentation while being entertaining as well.
So glad we could help Douglas. Best of luck once you finally get to your procedure. Thanks for watching, subscribing and for sharing if you did.
@@gailricordi5278 what type CBD. I got my mom some, for her it didn’t help. Thanks
@@lilianarodriguez8056 I got my CBD oil at the Indian reserve. I told them why I needed it & they recommended the one I bought.

Any particular diet to follow before total knee replacement?
I cannot stress enough to do your knee exercises 3 times a day 7 days a week!! Going to physio 2 to 3 times a week is not enough....you have to do the exercises on your own at home!!! I won't kid you...when you first start these exercises pre or post..you think what the heck was I thinking! But the effort is worth. And YES...I had a total right knee replacement in 2018! I have no pain, my walking gate is perfect!
Excellent video! I hope people understand the importance to getting as much back to 'normal' as possible. It takes work!
Absolutely!
Thank you. Still working on weight loss so I can have surgery. I do some of these now. But definitely will incorporate what you’ve shown here.
Love the Aikido reference! I'm going double replacement in about a little more than 10 days!
Excellent!
Good luck on the 31st Bob! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did

Jeff.

Excellant. I am working up to making an appointment for knee replacement surgery. I am terrified.

Thank you
Roy
Thank you so much. I appreciate it so much.
My knee is so crooked and it hurts like heck. I’m 53 and don’t want surgery😞
Thank you so much Patti. That is very kind. So glad we can help get you ready. Thanks for watching and subscribing
You guys seem much more humble than American surgeons (IMHO). Having a total knee in March. Thanks for these vids!

Great video! I'm waiting until I reach Medicare (2023) before I get my left TKA. My doc told me yesterday to start prehab to get my knee strong before the procedure.
