- Some French repertoire this time, the beautiful Carillon by The Old Goat, as he was called. This guitar is a joy to play, and beautifully put together by Rohan Lowe of Lowe Guitars: www.loweguitar... More videos to come. I teach students across the globe via Zoom. Let me know if interested. If you like what I do, why not "buy me a coffee" by making a donation to www.paypal.com... All donations go to help fund my free videos, research and websites - a sadly not-for-profit venture! Rob
That’s incredible! A couple years ago, I built a harp guitar with 11 strings, tuned normally for the first 6, and I experimented with several tunings for the bass strings. I then saw your video playing baroque lute music on the 10 string, and that inspired me to try to retune my harp guitar like a baroque lute too. But because I could only fret the first 6 strings, and the strings that were on them were for standard tuning, it was really sub-par. I wish I saw this back then! An absolutely amazing instrument, exactly what I would have wanted back then. Excellent performance Rob, as always. I really look forward to hearing more of this.
Great post, Ethan. I put some thought into this design, and found the right luthier to help me realise my dream. It’s working out nicely!
Such a sublime sound to that guitar, Rob! A very elegant sounding piece too, right at home in a European court. Well played!
Cheers, Josh. Having played it, I feel more elegant 😂
Que divino instrumento, es una replica original o es un invento moderno? esta en la afinacion exacta del laud barroco? donde se podria encontrar un plano. Quisiera construirla
What a divine instrument, is it an original replica or is it a modern invention? Is it in the exact tuning of the baroque lute? Where could a plan be found? I would like to build it
I am very pleased you like it! It is a modern instrument. I gave a basic design to the luthier, Rohan Lowe of LoweGuitars.co.uk. I wanted a 13-string guitar in Dm baroque-lute tuning, but not an exact historical instrument. I wanted some baroque features, but also some 19th-century guitar features too, especially metal frets. Rohan took those ideas and made this amazing instrument. His luthier skills are incredible, and he is currently making me a 10-string version in Renaissance lute tuning. The two models will be called: Rob MacKillop Baroque 13 and Rob MacKillop Renaissance 10. You can contact him via the website. Rob
Thank you for keep coming with good guitar music
Thanks, José. I like exploring.
Beautiful piece played beautifully. Could you explain the guitar a little? Are the lower open strings just the same gauge as the E string? What is their tuning?
never mind. I found the explanation video here: ua-cam.com/video/bonhxnb9jUc/v-deo.html
OK, glad you found the other video. The ‘free floating’ bass strings are a bit thinner than the 8th string (the lowest on the fretboard). That’s why they are so long. If they were the same length as the fretted strings they would have to be REALLY thick, and therefore unmusical. Glad you like it.
Ah, music from a more refined age...!
Ha, you might well be right, William, though I fear a read of a few social-history books might reveal they were as cruel as any other era. But they certainly brought grace and beauty to their music! for which I am thankful.
Musically anyway.
Such an incredible sound! So well played Sir.
It’s certainly a beautiful guitar. Thanks for your comment.
I'm loving this guitar. Well played. The bass is tremendous for such a small body. Are those flat wound strings on there?
Cheers, Simon. Glad you like it. I’d love to be a double-bass player myself! Yes, this guitar has instantly become my favourite, at least for baroque music. I chose harp strings for the 3rd to 13th for a couple of reasons. I like the material for the majority if not all the strings to be the same, which is something I learned from playing gut-strung lutes. These are Savarez KF strings, which are some kind of nylon polymer. They have little sustain, and perhaps would not be my string of choice for music of the Romantic era, but they suit baroque music well. Weiss and Gautier generally wrote a functional, supportive bass line, which should not overpower the treble voice. These strings give a warm, dull thud, which gives a velvety-landing to the bass, and a clear voice to the trebles. I think the bass and treble blend well here, which is just what I wanted, and I don’t have to spend half my time stopping bass clashes from ringing on. I can see why you mention flatwound strings, but there is no winding. The effect is not dissimilar. Rob
Sounds wonderful. I love DADFAD tuning on guitar, so this would be like taking it to the extreme :)
Ha, indeed. Those baroque guys knew a thing or two!
Please make tutorial videos for us learners 😢😢😢😢😢😢
I have quite a few videos for students, and also teach via Zoom. Best wishes, Rob
Well done, Rob. The bass is just right. Not too resonant, but warm and present.
Cheers, Neal. It ain’t no lute, as we know, but it’s its own thing, and that is beautiful too. I’m very happy with it.
I love the sound of smaller body guitars!
Me too! They focus the sound better, I think.
love that guitar! great high range especially!
Glad you like it, Mark. I agree!
I am going to cut my Nails....again
😎
Those bass strings have the perfect level of sustain. Interesting idea using harp strings!
I did worry about them, but they turned out just the way I hoped they would. Glad you like them!
So very inspiring Rob
Thanks, Leda. Glad you like it! I find the music and the instrument very inspiring.
Gorgeous playing and sound!
Glad you like it. Appreciated!
Charming.
As is your comment. Thanks, Steve.
Super!:)

I just realized....That guitar has an amazing TONE! It's so impressive and interesting visually that I until just now didn't really, truly, hear the sounds coming out of it. But that is some incredible tone for any number of strings.
Agreed! I’ve had to lay it - and everything else - aside as I concentrate on recording the Foscarini album, for which I’ve recorded 21 of 25 tracks. I expect to have the basic tracks recorded and edited by next weekend. Then all the other instruments will be vying for my attention! Glad you like the 13-string!

До чего удивительное исполнение на необычном инструменте! Большое Вам спасибо!
Спасибо! Мне очень приятно, что инструмент и музыка Вам нравятся!
Brilliant sound! Bravo!
Cheers, Dmitriy. Better recorded than the previous video.
The combination of your skills and musicianship, the wonderful piece and last, but by no means least: Rohan Lowe’s gorgeous sounding guitar, makes this very enjoyable listening.
Much appreciated, fellow human! There’s no such thing as a solo artist. We rely on luthiers and audio/computer technicians too. We are all in this together.
@@RobMacKillop1 Well said!
Very atmospheric! One of the best on this channel!
Glad you think so, Konstantes. Best wishes to you!
Beautiful music, well done!
Cheers, Rick! Glad you like it.

Cheers, Max. Putting together my retirement collection two years from now. There will be no money after that. Selling stuff off too.
@@RobMacKillop1 Been doing the same for a while now myself ; I can't be arsed playing guitars that fight me !
@@maxcuthbert100 Exactly!
Amazing!
Glad you think so! 😊
Such a nice instrument, do you notice those bass strings supply sympathetic resonance when playing the fretboard strings?
Yes, indeed. But the problem with some of these guitars is you get too much resonance, and when the harmony changes it can sound bad against the continuing resonance from the previous chord. So, I chose strings that give me a little but not too much resonance. Cheers, Rob.
