Good informative video easy to follow. I just helped my nephew do this on his 1999, I went a little further on the maintenance of the injectors, easy at that point of disassembly. I checked the ohms reading (12-17 is ok) of each injector and installed an injector kit that included the little "screen filter" and orings. I then bench-tested each injector with 12 volt supply with a simple on-and-off switch, connected a can of brake cleaner to the rail, which gives you 40psi, and cleaned each injector till the spray coming out was fully automized, out of the 6, two injectors were clogged the gas was coming out as 3 streams. That would account for his bad gas mileage and a misfire. Put the thing back together and it runs well and his gas mileage increased substantially. The things I do for my nephew! again thanks for the video 😀
Wow! First, I recognize your accent. Kinda made me feel like a trip back home. AND secondly, more important,...you are a fearless good mechanic sir. Had a couple friends like you back in the day who moonlighted from their jobs at auto parts stores and hot rod supply houses. Love your work! Much admiration and respect.
These old 6s only have 2 valves per cylinder, like most pushrod engines predating them. I wish they were 24 valve like their successor engines. They are basically just a stroked 3.8L from the carburetor days. It's a second set of intake RUNNERS. They share this setup with the 1999-2004 3.8L/3.9L Mustangs, the 3.8L Windstars, the 3.9L and 4.2L Freestars. Though the '99 and '00 Mustang had the extra runners, they lacked the ability to close one set off as RPMs climbed. They are also Windsor motors like your 289, 302, and 351 cu. in. small block v8s. Being built in the Essex plant in Windsor Ontario.
@@Jvcomet Probably both. Maybe first check just the EGR valve actuator way back around where the intake manifold meets the block. Brittle plastic snap connectors.
Nice video very informative,,im about to remove the upper intake and i have the aluminum upper intake like yours in the video i was very curious what should i torque the upper intake down to once i replace the gasket?,,having a hard time finding any specs for this aluminum upper intake most i see are the newer plastic 2 piece upper intake.
Thanks for the video. I've got one of these trucks that i'm about to bury, a rare manual, too many problems with it! But I have lots of good parts and found another one cheap, it just needs an intake manifold, which i have. They are good trucks, and i think its worth doing.
Hey, I have the same make you are working on a 97 Ford F150, XLT 4.2. But I need to replace the intake, manifold runner control valve,. my question is do they both go bad at the same time. An after taking the Plenum off , I still can’t see the intake manifold running control valve that good. Do I have to take the intake off to?
Strange that they both went at the same time but it’s possible and yes you need to take the intake manifold off make sure you clean everything up real good get all the crud and carbon buildup cleaned out
Oh, BTW> I have the Van version 2003 with plastic manifolds. Just priced this job out at my local mechanics shop...$2200..yep. then after watching you, I thought,...that's fair.
I had to remove the upper intake because the water inlet was broken so when I took off the upper intake, I clean the throttle body with carburetor cleaner. There’s a lot of carbon in there, black carbon, and on the intake on the motor there was carbon in there too, I clean the surface, mounted back the upper intake onto the motor And connect it all the hoses, wires and install plugs and wires new the truck when you first started it idles high and then like it wants to die out then it starts to mess. Find out there was a wire that was not good so I replaced it with new wires and plugs the plugs. We’re not good either but the truck still has a mess to it. When you give it gas it hesitates and then takes off and then sometimes the idle goes high then low I found a vacuum line that I did not connect to the to the PCV crank case I connected that back on, and it seem to run better but still has that hesitation or a miss I don’t know what else to check for why it’s doing thi Sometimes the truck turns off as well. I was thinking, maybe when I clean the throttlebody it messed up some thing it’s not electric it is throttle cable operated, but the throttle plate feels like it sticks, and when I sprayed it with carburetor cleaner, maybe it clog some thing.
@@Jvcomet vacuum line was lose also has a sticking throttle after replacing the leaking vacuum, hose the truck ran fine, but when you step on it, sometimes the throttle sticks.
hi i have a 2002 and i need to remove the upper intake like the one you put back in place well i only found 11 bolts i cant find any other bolts it move but its stuck in place i was trying to find a video how you removed it
Tried to send you a picture but doesn’t work through here. Look up Google. Intake manifold torque specs for your vehicle it’ll come up. Hope that helps.
My truck ran fine until I had to replace a broken pipe that was leaking coolant. Then I changed the upper intake gasket and put it back together now truck won’t idle and sounds rough.
Clean them out when doing this job! You'll see them, if you are paying attention. They are butterfly valves actuated by the above mentioned actuator at the rear of the Ford 4.2.
The emissions actuator at the very back of the lower intake manifold will probably have broken plastic clips. A couple of $ to replace. Pretty much the actuator clips are the same as interior door actuator clips. Zip ties may be needed! Exhaust Gas Regulator valve! EGR . I was already replacing the lower intake manifold gaskets with the smaller plastic type manifold. If someone is working on one of the older ones with the huge aluminum intake without removing the intake manifold they probably won't be able to see what's going on behind it without a camera or mirror!
That's not for emissions. It's the IMRC or Intake Manifold Runner Control. The Essex 3.8L, 3.9L, and 4.2L have 2 sets of intake runners per cylinder. The reason why your lower intake has an oval port and a round port for each individual cylinder. A longer set of runners to help with low end torque to get the vehicle moving, and a shorter set for higher RPM speed building. The IMRC system has butterfly valves, much like a throttle body has, that stays closed during the lower RPM range, and opens when it gets to a certain RPM range to allow additional air flow into the cylinders. There are also EGR ports per cylinder inside each of the center intake ports. These get clogged, along with the port running down the center, and needs to be cleaned out sometimes.
@@AraceaeFanatics Thanks for the update, I just know that it fixed my emissions code! I cleaned everything visible while replacing the lower intake manifold gaskets, yep they were very damn dirty. 40,000 miles later and no issues yet.
Aye "may as well make a video" is the ONLY video I could find doing this exact thing on this exact engine. Much appreciated, sir.
Thanks for watching. Appreciate you commenting. Hope the video helped.
Thank you so much for all tips! I am about to do exactly same thing on my 99 F150 plus injectors replacement. This video helps a lot!!!

Got a lean bank 1 and bank 2 code. Took some brake cleaner and sure enough it revs up when sprayed around the intake.

I would like to see a video removing the intake manifold from the 1997 Ford F150, XLT 4.2. Do you have a complete video for me to watch?
Sorry that’s the only one on that deal.

The intake was leaking or the EGR valve stuck?

The Basic Ford door actuator clips or similar on the Dorman aisle of the local parts store should work.

Yea make sure to address the throttle issue. Maybe put an extra return spring on it. 👍
I have to do the same job on my 98 f150..no fun laying on top of the motor to do the work.
Lol 😂 yep
Lay a 2x4 or long board across the engine bay so you have something to rest on & use the spare tire to stand on

Maybe the gasket moved on you. Make sure it’s lined up. Sounds like a vacuum leak problem
Awesome video! What kid of time frame did this take?
Probably a couple-3 hrs. 👍
I was told that under the bottom intake are some kind of flaps and they sometimes stick making the truck have a slight miss is this true thanks
Not sure. An intake “leak” will definitely cause a miss

How many bolts are on the upper manifold

How many ft lbs on the upper and lower intake bolts ?
German spec. GoodNtight lol
