Not a whole lot of videos out there about these 4.2s. I've got an 05 4.2 with a manual transmission. Only have had to replace a coil pack so far, but definitely gonna be checking out this intake manifold gasket situation.
@@Mark-in5yw looking at their construction, it's a bulletproof design. No overhead cam stuff going on, just simple pushrods on a single cam. Timing chain only goes over 2 gears, the central cam and the crank. I've never had to do anything to mine other than change the oil and spark plugs.
Yup, I have this truck in standard transmission. Just had the upper/lower manifold gaskets replaced, along with fuel filter, and O2 sensors(upstream) because of the check engine light. Had to do that just to pass emissions...
I'm helping my uncle on this, he did the repair about 9 years ago and he had the same failure as you did (9 years ago), and now it's not from there the gaskets look and feel in good condition, no obvious breaks. We're guessing head gasket, or cracked head. Hopefully remove heads in the coming days and see where the failure was.
Good info. I'm planning on one of these in my 03 Exploder the next time one of the chain guides go south. (4.0) I've heard a certain year of the 4.2 is better than others ?
Thank-you. I've never seen a 4.2 tore down so far. My rear main is leaking, and I have put 2 slave cylinders in it. I bought it new. I know that lower intake is bad, I might just lick my wounds and get rid of it.
I know this is an OLD video but it was really helpful so thank you. I’ve already watched the other rebuild videos for it. But what are some typical sign of a failed gasket? I am hoping it is only the intake manifold gaskets and not the head gaskets but want to be sure when i’m inspecting so i don’t have to strip it back down. Thanks you again
This is a late reply but it is just to answer this question. If the gasket is far enough gone you should notice coolant will continue to get low in the de-gas bottle even tho there isn't a visible leak. It's slowly being burned off in the affected cylinder. The engine may have hard starts after it sits overnight due to the plug being drowned. Also you will probably feel a dead skip when it starts up from a cold start until the plug/cylinder dry out enough to fire correctly. The skip or rough running may go away after a few minutes of driving because the coolant has been burned off the plugs.
Question: I have the same 1997 4.2L truck. I removed the injectors last year because I need new ones. I accidentally broke 3/6 fuel injector c-clips that need to be removed to remove the injectors. Can I install new injectors without them? I watched another video by 1AAuto showing how to replace them and he never removed the c-clips because it didn't have them on. I'm guessing this isn't the first time that truck had fuel injectors replaced. For me, I am replacing the original injectors. So just sliding it it with pressure from the o-ring, and screwing on the fuel rail to the manifold, would that be enough to keep the injector from slipping off? And the reason why I'm replacing my fuel injectors is because I'm an idiot. I started up my truck years ago with expired fuel and that clogged the injectors. So I'm in the process of buying fuel pump assembly and injectors. But I've been skeptical about installing new injectors without them c-clips. And the only way I know of to get them is from a junk yard from a truck of the same year and engine.
Hi, I have an E-250 with a V6 4.2L engine that has significant oil consumption (probably due to valve seals) and some external oil leaks. Could you help me with this issue? I live in the SF Bay Area. :)
How much needs to be done to change the hydraulic cam rollers on these 2003 4.2 V6 F150 engines ? Has a ticking tock tock noise not very loud but its there ..also when accelerating mainly under load..while driving you can barely hear it... I already changed the rockers and pushrods noise still there .... is that a common problem ?
Hey Mike how its going man nice video I'm in need of the same type of job are you located in Texas by any chance I no it's weird to be asking but instead of tackling a job I've never done I'd think it'd be better to at least talk to someone who knows what they are doing lmk if possible please..same engine
I have a 97 Ford F-150 4.2L v6 and I had a blown head gasket. So I changed them and put it back together. I looked up the torque specs. 14,29,36. But that's awful low to me for cylinder heads . Need help because I had coolant leaking from my head bolts on both sides When I put it back together
@@propabilityfpv303 Coolant runs through there in it's own paths, but sometimes the gasket fails and it gets into the fuel/air mixture on it's way to the combustion chamber. When it's burned there you get white smoke that smells vaguely like antifreeze, or like a rotten sweet smell.
@@stepperdox2762 i completely forgot about that. Im used to fixing lawn mowers and small engines i never even thought about the fact that intakes have coolant running through them lol.
These engines have way too many vacuum lines and sensors, converters, repair is a rebuild nightmare. I might say most engines are expensive experiments. Emission standards have destroyed the auto industry. All junk as for as I'm concerned. Too many bells and whistles. Hasn't been a auto built worth owning since the 1970s.
This engine is an excellent design with lousy execution on the actual build which is typical for American vehicles. Hardly anything gets built properly on Ford (or GM or Chrysler) assembly line. A UAW worker ran those intake manifold bolts in with a shitty air ratchet (or whatever) supposedly "calibrated" to the proper torque with the torque pattern of tightening random bolts fully, then moving on to the next bolt. By the time you tighten all of those bolts in one step, who knows what the torque is on the first bolts you installed by the time you get to the last bolts and the gasket tends to "walk" during heat cycles. This is lousy quality control and a manifold like this should be torqued gradually in a proper sequence in steps until the proper torque is reached. This doesn't happen on any American assembly line.
It's nuts that Ford continues to use shoddy materials for their Junk. Why is the F150 still such a good seller? You folks that buy them must be ignorant.

There must not be too many failures with this engine. There must be hundreds of videos on failures of the 3.8/3800 gm engine... LoL...

Great video bud. My 4.2 with 345ooo miles just started doing this and thanks to your video i saved it.

I'm currently working on my 2000 Econoline with the same 4.2 which failed at the same place. Got over 250k miles off it though.

Fix it bud. This engine is extremely service friendly. You can pull the heads off of one of these in 2 hours. Not quite as easy on a modular V8...
What did u decide?

Una pregunta como diferencea las cavesas para saber cuál es la izquierda y cuál es la derecha son iguales
where do you live and how much would you charge for rebuild?
Thank you for posting and sharing this information, yes it helped
I got the same problem have new engine but is it advisable to bolt on lifting equipment to the heads to put new engine in ?
Hello Subscriber here, Did you use 3mm or 4mm lower intake gaskets?? Thankyou
Going through the same problem. 😔
What torque did you use for the main bearings?
How much is the cost for this job?

Thread sealer on the bolts that dip into the coolant passages.
Remove the head bolts one at a time, put gasket sealer on the bolt threads and reinstall them at the proper torque before moving on to the next bolt.
Thanks for all the information, it's really helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
If the intake gasket caused coolant to leak into the cylinder bore, wouldn't there be evidence through the tailpipe?
Yes there will be white smoke puffing from the tail pipe until the cylinder bores clear out. If you see that, act fast.
im confused. how will a intake gasket have any connection to coolant?

What about hydrolocked with oil
Hydro locked with oil turned out to be bad/missing pcv valve

Any fords built after 1996 are complete garbage .
