I saw in one video that using alpine mode isn’t recommended with waste oils. But I don’t know enough about all this yet. Thanks for sharing your videos, very informative. Dan from Alberta Canada.

I burn used oil in mine too. I haven't checked temperature but I mix 40 percent diesel 10 percent gasoline 50 percent waste oil.
If I have problems lighting it from cold I feed a little propane into the intake until it gets burning good.

I think the alpine mode cuts back the fuel flow for the same fan speed. In a higher altitude the air is less dense so there's less oxygen to use per volume of air flow. Basically it would keep the same air fuel ratio at high altitude vs sea level.

You should Y inlet your fuel... Diesel and oil from separate tanks, Start with diesel until hot then switch to oil/diesel mix, filter the old oil as best you can wrap a copper brake line tube around the exhaust after the fuel pump to pre-heat the oil/diesel mix before it enters the burn chamber this way you can mix a lot less diesel to the old oil 20% or even 10% petrol/Gas. I run my initial burn on Kerosene/Paraffin for first 5 mins then switched over to old oil. I still do this and it has not let me down in over 7 months, I will do a strip down clean in spring! FYI when the contractors take away the old oil from garages/breaker yards they burn it!

I did what you suggested, I have straight diesel and diesel waste oil mix Y piped. I had it where you start on straight diesel, and once hot switch over to waste mix. I only got two days of run time. It's flaming out at start now. It is preheated with brake line wrapped by exhaust. You guys add something to the mix also? I wish I could run 7mo no issues

I would not go over 30% waste oil and you should filter it otherwise your burn chamber will plug on the bottom holes cutting off air supply -also start up and shut down with pure diesel with your unit on high for at least ten minutes prior to shut down to combat the impurity burn situation and keep your burn chamber clean

Leaning out the burn on your diesel heater is quite different than leaning out your burn on a combustion engine. Leaning out the burn in the diesel heater will make the temperature go down however adding used crank case oil it will burn hotter because there is more energy in crank case oil.

A another idea could be to run it on a 2 tank system. To start it on pure diesel and switching it to your "blend" once it is up to operating temperature. About "blending", you could try to blend waste oil with gasoline in a 90/10 ratio or in a 80/20 ratio (%). That blend hold almost the same cetane rating as pure diesel. I am running waste motor oil blending with gasoline in a 80/20 ratio on my diesel car. I have a 2 tank setup starting on diesel and switching it to black diesel tank.

I tried this last winter. Good heat output, but after a couple of weeks got harder to start and began to flame out. I replaced the gauze by the glow plug thinking this would solve the problems. It didn't. I cleaned as much as I could the burn chamber which had hard carbon built up at the front where the flame propergates from but still no good. I then cut the chamber and found the carbon had built up around a second gauze at the front of the burn chamber where the flame comes from. I ended up having to replace the burn chamber which negated most of the savings I'd achieved by using waste motor oil, plus the time to strip it down several times to find the root of the problem.
Heaters only ever break when you need them.....

    • @Storman77
      @Storman77  Рік тому +4

That’s so true they always break when you need them. I am having the very same luck you are having. I truly think I need to preheat to get better burn. I have had to stop using waste oil mix . The burner clogs up to quickly . Also I have to admit the oil I have may have other contamination. I do wood work and I was using spirits and acetone and random solvents may have been poured in so I have decided to abandon this batch clean out the waste oil container and do a few oil changes coming soon to our vehicles and make sure it’s only waste oil and filtered for future mixes also I have a stainless 1/4 inch by 3 feet tube on the way that I will wrap around the exhaust make a coil of sorts to help with burning this mixture.

@@Storman77 good luck! I've basically given up with wmo. It's the ash Content that causes the clogging, where the secondary gauze is the flame simply doesn't get hot enough to burn this off as the gauze is just to increase surface area to make diesel easier to ignite. The gauze needs to be getting on for white hot to combust the ash. if a jet was put in to atomise the wmo, and started using diesel conventionally, it might work, but I suspect the heat exchanger would over heat. For me, the bottom line is that it's only good for diesel. Even new veg oil clogs. Great video!

the problem is that waste oil will leave that gunk if the temperature is too low. that usually means it happens everytime you start it up. I ended up having two tanks, one with straight diesel and one with waste oil/diesel. I would start it with the straight diesel, and then swap. I guess its a Y junction, except a simple kind where only one of the two can be connected at once. that helped me a lot.

@@Storman77 if that doesn’t help, combine it with a simple one pass filter for the waste oil. it kind of depends on where youre getting the waste engine oil from. it doesn’t need to be very good filter, not like youre reusing the oil. I’d recommend a large piece of felt over a 50 gallon drum. you’d secure the felt with a rachet strap or something, then you’d just pour the waste oil into the drum on top of the felt, and then let it sit for a couple days. i didn’t need to do that, but there is a guy on youtube that did that for use in a oil-fired scrapping furnace.

They don't dump used waste oil, they burn it too..If you want to burn old oil get some carbon felt, make a candle box stove, the carbon felt is the wick, the oil is the candle, use computer fans to suck air through the pipes, will work 4 ever, blows 200 degree air...carbon felt never burns like a normal wick, and can wick up heavy oils, have to start it by lighting it with some alcohol, gas, starter fluid, something like that..Look up candle box stove..The carbon felt must be 100%...Way better for burning used oil, simple to make...

I'm wondering what temp you would get, if you put the intake pipe outside, so you get colder and more oxygen reach air in the burner. If your garage is sealed tied then you may run out of oxygen for the burner to work efficiently. This is just a theory, but may be worth trying.

The unit was designed to produce 160° c out the pipe if you run it over hot because you've got hotter fuel in it the risk of melting down aluminum internal parts because 200° c air temperature does not equate to internal temperature.
    Aluminum melts at 660° c
I would worry about permanently damaging internal components running it on maximum output like that 100% of the time.
That's like driving your car around with an extra hundred horsepower worth of nitrous even when you don't need it.

Nope not a québécois. And diesel have no intake pressure control? What is intake boost pressure? I think I understand what you meant but diesel engine are not comparable to this heater . I hear people comparing it and I assure you a diesel engine and this heater have too many different characteristics. One big one is there is like zero compression on heater . But fuel air mixture certainly is similar in the principle you pointing out

@@Storman77 talking non turbo, and mostly comparing vs a gasoline engine which runs under vaccuum. Gasoline= air controlled. diesel = fuel controlled. Hence the opposite effects on air fuel ratios. Ordered a second heater to put in my truck. Was able to run my trucks amsoil 15w40 in it. It just doesnt want to run on the first 2 speed settings. Pretty high 450C flash point.

Please guys, I'm 100% ignorant about this stuff, can anyone point me to a video explaining how to set this thing up what the hoses are for and how to install one at home? I suppose one hose needs a hole in a wall, then it just needs electric power?
    Thanks...

  • @challenger2ultralightadventure

To save on costs, have you considered using home heating oil instead of diesel, which carries road use taxes? You could save more money that way.

All your doing by running used engine oil is shortening the life of the heater. Just run heating oil or agro diesel.

DO NOT PUT waste oil in these heaters . with in a week or two you will have to strip it down and clean it out , it will make a REAL mess inside , believe me ive been there , NEVER again , you ARE going to ruin the heater if you keep using it .,

I accidentally just bought the 5kw version because they both look identical. I was not aware that there was more than one option.
What's the difference? More heat? Should I be concerned that I got the 5kw instead of the 8kw?

    • @Sparks0001

If the one you have bought is the same physical size as the usual 5KW, then it is just marketing BS and is the same heater

The 8kw claim has been largely disproved by other diesel heater owners. I tend to agree based on a host of factors. The basic heater design follows the Espar and Webasto models. Neither company makes an air heater with an 8 kw output

I can tell you right now folks from experience you mixing this oil in there and you're screwed and let me explain why. This shit does not burn at 1100° inside there so one you're going to get soot whether you want to or not. Especially if you put the oil stuff in there mixing it with the diesel. This thing is not going to burn your used up oil and shit what you're going to be doing is cleaning it out every month You're going to tear it completely apart to get it to work I'm telling you you are fucking up messing with these other fuels putting them in there with the diesel but go ahead make your videos just let you know I warned you
