Operation COBRA, the American breakout from Normandy at the end of July 1944, completely changed the dynamics of the fighting in western Europe. In its aftermath, Allied forces would partially encircle and almost completely destroy German forces in Normandy; and American tanks under General George S. Patton would drive across France to the German border, leading to the liberation of Paris. With all of these dramatic events taking place, few noticed that one of the war’s bloodiest and most important operations was taking place far to the west, at the French port city of Brest.
The success of Operation COBRA was followed in short order by the penetration of American mobile forces into Brittany. Their primary objective was to capture the peninsula’s several important harbor facilities. Although General “Lightning” Joe Collins’s VII Corps had captured Cherbourg a month earlier, the Germans had so thoroughly demolished the port that months would pass before it was again operational. Securing another port, hopefully intact, would do a great deal to reduce the supply bottleneck still running through the Normandy beaches, and hopefully fuel Patton’s tanks. The Germans knew this as well, however, and had done a great deal to fortify and garrison the most important harbors in Brittany-especially Brest.
Paratroop General Hermann-Bernhard Ramcke, a wily veteran who had served under General Erwin Rommel in North Africa, commanded the 40,000-man garrison in Brest, which Adolf Hitler had declared a fortress to be defended to the last bullet. Two infantry divisions and one parachute division with associated elements, including ample artillery and machine guns, defended a formidable network of bunkers, pillboxes, emplacements, and trenches, all placed for mutual support. These were arrayed in exterior and interior lines, with the intention of eventually drawing any attackers into the city for house-to-house fighting and heavy casualties. To ensure that the garrison would be able to hold on to the city almost indefinitely, without having to feed civilians, the Germans had forcibly evacuated the population.
When American forces entered Brittany, Patton ordered his 6th Armored Division to rush ahead and capture Brest, hoping that a lightning strike would find the Germans unprepared. This bid failed, as the Americans reached the outer defensive lines on August 7 and found them far too formidable to penetrate. The next two weeks passed slowly as American forces slowly encircled the city and the Germans further improved their defenses. Finally, General Omar Bradley dispatched General Troy Middleton’s VIII Corps, with the 2nd, 8th, and 29th infantry divisions and Ranger detachments to storm the city. After some preliminary attacks, the full assault, backed by artillery and strikes by aircraft using bombs, rockets, and napalm, began on August 26.
American infantrymen found the German defenses incredibly difficult to crack, and the fighting was brutal. Far from lying supine in their defenses, the Germans struck back ferociously wherever possible. Sergeant John McVeigh, a native of Philadelphia and draftee with the 2nd Division’s 23rd Infantry Regiment, fought for three days before his platoon took up positions behind a hedge just after dusk on August 29. Before the Americans had time to dig in, German infantry suddenly counterattacked and came close to overrunning the position. Rallying his men, McVeigh stood up in view of the enemy and directed accurate fire against them. Then, drawing a knife, he charged the attacking Germans, killing one of them before the enemy shot him down. McVeigh’s action gave his men time to reorganize and hold off the enemy attack, and earned him a posthumous Medal of Honor.
Heavy casualties soon forced Middleton to shift from all-out assaults on the German positions to small but intense bite-and-hold operations, in which infantry took out one strongpoint at a time and then held on grimly against German counterattacks. American infantry used flamethrowers, satchel charges, and concentrated small-arms fire to move slowly from point to point.

Another excellent episode. Sidenote: I listened to the German-language commentary made just toward the end of that segment (11:05-11:28....where the commentator relates that the strong will and near-fanaticism of the German soldier will teach the Americans and Brits a thing-or-two.....yet the final scenes of the marching German soldiers show the true weariness worn-down nature of the group this late in the war.....

Cheers Frederick As always well worth watching! ..The Footage from the West Wall is often mixed up with the 'Bulge' Combat later on so good to see it in its proper context. As for the Brest Footage Course we would like to see it all It was one of the last 'Fortresses ' on the Atlantic Wall to fall in 45 ..Probably because like the footage showed they were Defended by Falschrimjager Battalions as well as Naval Marines! I hope we see more..But please keep these Europa Films coming ( With English Subtitles Next Time!)👍😆

back then the Germans had good taste for fine arts and sporting events, but they also liked the American lifestyle more than anything because they were extremely indoctrinated since a very young age and were deprived from other cultural trends of that time

To be your best, such as the being best classical musician you can possibly be, or almost anything else, it helps to have a singular purpose and focus on little or nothing else. I can tell you there's a difference for a reason. When you play with spirit, it's because that spirit is predominant.

My friend..you have done it again..such great footage. My Grandfather would have just loved to have watched this footage. He even stated..."We had our propaganda films shown to us by famous Hollywood stars (my interruption...many of whom he got autographs from before the war in London..it was a big thing then).."..it would be great to see the "other side" and see their propaganda movies"
    So Frederick...what about it..
A German propaganda movie..like the ones the Allies watched in England..but from the German side..I reckon that would be interesting to see how and what the Germans were telling their folk..

I would love to see the rest. The defense was led by the world wide admired Fallschirmjäger General Ramke who preformed so many amazing feats that even the Americans thought he was a super star. After he was captured he was sent to Britain to the manor house where captured high ranking officers were allowed to roam free on the grounds and in the house. What they didn't know was everywhere they were allowed to go there were hundreds of secret microphone recording everything that was said, giving the Allied powers insights they had never considered before. In 1945 the Allies had the generals sent to one POW camp in Clinton, Mississippi, designated for high ranking German officers. They included too many to name her but the German general who surrendered the Afrika Corps, Theodor von Arnim, the German General who saved Paris, Von Choltiz, and Ramke. They were held there until 1947. But at wars end when the US learned how their POWs were treated in Germany, several rogue commanders, including the one at Camp Clinton, decided to treat the Germans the same way as the Germans had treated theirs. This was not a fair comparison because the Allies were constantly bombing and shelling areas that prevented medical supplies and food from being delivered to the prisoners. So before long, the Germans at Camp Clinton were denied all the rights of the Geneva Convention and were put on starvation rations, not mail could be delivered or sent, no German newspapers, etc. But once again, Ramcke did something amazing. He put on the clothes of a Dutch worker, as many Dutch came to Jackson, Mississippi, to train their airforce and of course families came together. So the idea of putting on a Dutch worker's clothes was by design. He escaped the prison on Christmas night when there were many fireworks being shot and there was a lot of noise. Then he made his way to a road and got a farmer to drive him to downtown Jackson, where he went to the downtown post office and bought two stamps for two letters. When he had arrived in the Washington DC, people were wanting to make friends because he was so famous, and two men in particular told him that if they could ever do anything for him, just write. One was Freshman Mississippi Senator James O Eastland and the other I cannot remember his name, both gave Ramcke his addresses, which explains the two letters. Once he had mailed the letters he went down the street to the Walgreens Restaurant and ordered a sandwich and a drink, keeping the receipt as proof that he had been there. After that he left and broke back into the prison. The only person he trusted with his secret was his personal aide. He showed him the receipt and told the Aide not to tell anyone until his mission had been accomplished. A few days after the letters were delivered, Eastland notified the Army about what was happening and without warning a few army vehicles arrived, the commander was relieved of duty, possibly being arrested as well, and a new man was put in command and all returned to normal.
After he return home he faces a war crimes tribunal and was sent home. There he vowed he would never put on a uniform again, and did not talk with anyone about his exploits until he wrote a book about them. For many years the books were only printed in German but now there is one in English which is a very good read.

I would like to ask if you have any combat documentaries about the Grossdeutschland infantry or armored divisions in World War II, especially on the Eastern Front. There are not enough documentaries about this division that are popular on UA-cam. I hope there are detailed combat documentaries about them.

Making a vitamin drink out of very bitter mountain ash berries. That’s pretty desperate. Don’t think the kids would have liked it. Life must have been extremely challenging then . People these days don’t know how good they have it

There was likely a problem with your bandwidth when you watch the video the first time. Sometimes UA-cam reduces the quality if the downloading is slow. Please go back and take a look again.
