Thanks very much Rick for this outstanding film/ video. Your work is excellent!! I'm 91 years old and remember hearing about some of this on the radio as an 11 year old. All the best from Gene in Tennessee.
If you don't mind sharing, what were your first thoughts and the thoughts of those around you when the radio announced it? What was the atmosphere like for you and your fellow Americans?
Dank Rick 🙏👍❤️🙏👍
Well, I'm sorry to say that the coloring process was highly unsatisfactory. Colour is constantly changing from rusty brown to green, to blue, to tan, to light orange, pink and violet and back again, and didn't correspond to the real colour of uniforms and equipment.
D-Day. 80 years ago today. Time flies. Almost every soul pictured on this video has passed away. Very few D-Day participants are still alive. 59 years ago today I passed my deep water scuba test at Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. 100 feet down on the bottom of the ocean under the boat that day, I remembered the D-Day invasion as a young teen as I was getting ready for my Free Ascent test. My apprehension was not nearly as bad as what soldiers faced as the ramp was dropped on the Higgins landing crafts at Omaha Beach. My dad was a USN Sailor, Machinist Mate, and he often told us many war stories. He told me to always remember this special day as it was the Anniversary of the D-Day invasion. I shall remember June 6th for as long as I shall live.
Of the 160,000 soldiers that participated in D-day, apart from those who died on that day itself, probably around 1% of the veterans are still alive, so less than 2000. They are all 98 years of age or older. This 80th D-day anniversary will be the last in which veterans will still be able to participate. In 2029, apart from a handful, all will be deceased. Good thing Steven Spielberg interviewed many of them some years ago.
i met an old para yesterday im my city of portsmouth i was waiting for something and seen him he had a chest of medels, and it annoyed me not one person nodded to him or thanked him so i caught up with him had a chat found out he signed up at 16 and served 36 years i shook his hand and said thank you for your service
My Dad who passed in November of 2006 served in the Pacific theatre. He was a diesel mechanic on LST 763. He said he got sea sick everyday until his body acclimated to the sea. I miss my Dad. The greatest generation!
I wonder if he knew or worked on the same LST as my great grandfather. My great grandfather was Cleon Ross and was also an engineer, a chief petty officer, on an LST. He and his coworkers would secretly make potato (or any fruit they could get) hooch in the engine room away from prying eyes. He told my mom that during the invasion, he had went topside one time to see what was happening, just about had a heart attack, and went back below where he proceeded to get drunk. He has been dead since the 70's so I will have to ask my mother if she recalls which one he was on and where.
Great video! I was in Normandy last week, visiting with a friend, we saw the US veterans parade in Sainte-Mère-Eglise, we were cheering and saying thank you. The veterans were saying thank you as well for cheering them. Shows how humble they are/were, thanking us for being there when they are the reason we are living in free countries. Was really emotional, not just there but at all spots were there are memorials or museums. My grandpa was in the Belgian artillery in 1940 when he fought the 3rd Reich, Blitzkrieg overrun the country in 3 weeks and he was made a POW for the rest of the war until the Americans liberated his camp. He never talked much about that period and as time advances we will see even less veterans or civilians who experienced D-Day and the war and are able to share what a tragedy it was😔. We must not forget what happened back then and what it cost to get freedom back, especially with the war in Ukraine...
It must have taken many hours to source the film footage and write your script. They were well worth it! This documentary was compelling from start to finish, despite all of the events being well known. Your narrative was perfect: clear, concise and impartial. I feel this will remain an important documentary long after we are both departed, and I hope that you feel justifiably proud of your work!
Excellent and amazing colour footage, everything looks so much different in colour. Thank you so much for your time and effort in producing this vlog, it is truly a work of art!
This is so well presented. Thank you! One correction, however. On Utah Beach where my grandfather, then Col. Van Fleet, landed, it was Brigadier General Teddy Roosevelt, Jr., to whom the phrase “We’ll start the war from here,” is attributed. President Franklin Roosevelt was far away and couldn’t have made such a decision. That decision was made after Gen. Roosevelt conferred with my Grandfather who understood exactly where they were. I have heard that Native Americans who had landed with them were the ones who communicated with the ships at sea bringing in more troops to continue to come in that direction.
Wow, Rick! You're truly outdoing yourself with these! Thanks for all your work on the footage and the brilliant documentaries you do! Cheers from België o7
They changed the history of the world. The best generation that has ever lived on earth. The effort they made should be classified as one of the wonders of the earth. I admire them deeply, honorably and I have them to thank for my life I have today!
Seeing it in color and with such sharpness and frame rate makes it seem like recent history still. It's truly amazing when you realize that 80 years ago really isn't that long.
That footage at 14:50 where it shows the machine gun rounds splashing in the water gives me the shivers, it must've been terrifying for those men. I'm so fortunate that my generation wasn't one called on to defend our freedoms.
Wow. I just got chills realizing it’s actually been 80 years since D-Day. As a former TV news reporter, I was fortunate enough to have met and interviewed many WWII veterans, and even one veteran who was on Omaha Beach on D-Day. Sadly, those friends have since passed away, but the people from that generation are/were truly special.
Steven Spielberg is on record saying there is really a lot more surviving military archival footage from D-Day ...that will never be released because it shows too much Allied carnage. Also true: different accounts, including eye-witness, tell that a portion of the collected American footage from that day was lost overboard in the slip of the grip on a duffel bag. Unfortunate. And famously, most of Robert Capa's footage, rushed back to Britain after he survived the first wave at Omaha, was accidentally over-exposed and destroyed by a nervous novice in a newspaper darkroom. Leaving us this same old, disappointingly minuscule set of vignettes of the "Longest Day". My dad, an Aussie who flew Lancasters with the RAF, said it looked to him there were more ships in the water than stars in the sky, and he was right - the number of ships involved in the landings WAS more than the counts of stars the best human eyes can see in the best conditions without a telescope! So, another fact to contemplate and maybe pass on while taking in the view of a clear night sky ...lest we forget.
Thanks, Rick! Impressive and well documented video. The decision on Utah beach to "start the war from here" was not made by president Roosevelt, but by the local commander, Brigadier General Teddy Toosevelt junior.
It’s cool to see old B&W videos getting ai colorized and HD enhanced, it’s like speculating the missing information back in to approximate what mother nature intended to be, based on the availible information, it’s just incredible what can be done these days with digital technology🙏😁
Thank you very much for this exceptional and excellent documentation! It shows once again how grateful we Europeans have to be that countless young American people fought for us and our freedom and often gave their lives for it. I, now 63 years old, am deeply grateful to all these Allied troops for what they did! It should also be clear to many other people in Europe what we owe to all these brave young people. If it weren't for them, we might be living in a completely different, much worse world today! Thank you very much everyone🙏🏼. Bo 🇨🇭
USA? It was Britain (with its Commonwealth allies) who began the fight against Nazi Germany and carried on the fight. It was Britain that was the leader of the fight against Nazi Germany in the west. Even on D-Day, 3 of the 5 beaches, the majority of the planes and 80% of the naval forces were British/Commonwealth. Montgomery was the ground forces commander. Ramsay was the naval forces commander. I've never seen footage of this quality before. Astounding! I also did not know about the pipeline. That was genius. Thank you for presenting this. We MUST NEVER FORGET, especially in light of today's wannabe dictators!
I can't imagine the feeling being on one of those landing ships as the front gate was lowered, having to enter the water and watching others lose their lives all around you. They were kids too, barely 20 years old.
Imagine how the world would look like today, if this operation wouldn't have happened. I am German, born long after the end of the war in 1967, and I will be forever grateful to these men, and all the other allied forces, that made sure, I was not born into Nazi Deutschland.
@@oldshipmatesadventures the Molotov ribbentrop pact are why the war in Europe was able to start. If the socialists hadn't teamed up against free people, there would have been no war. But the fascists were confident because American and Canadian progressives supported them. FDR openly praised fascism and Mussolini. His State department did the same of Hitler. Canada is back to doing euthanasia. They stood and cheered for a waffen SS officer in their parliament just last year.
The Greatest Generation. To think men and women all over the world from islands to large cities to small towns and farms came to answer the call to defend their way of life. Their countries. God bless all those whom fought and served. Those to whom never returned home.
Amazing footage, so well restored. It’s really hard to look into the faces of those young men filing onto the boats knowing, as we do now, what they were about to face. I went to Omaha beach 20 years ago and it was a salutary experience to stand there and imagine what those rangers went through that day, and how many didn’t make it.
Great job using various footage to illustrate different stages of the attack. And I appreciate the amount of footage you've included of the Canadian landings at Juno. Well done!
This occasion serves as a tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and heroism of the soldiers, sailors and airmen who embarked on the daring mission to liberate Europe during World War II…We honour the memory of those who fought and fell on the beaches of Normandy….. Some people need to remember the sacrifices made during this event…
My Grandfather on Germany's side. He was rescued by Canadian medics under artillery fire after being seriouly woulded and immobilized. He always spoke of how well he was treated as a POW in Britain. Could not have asked for more fair and honorable opponents. The British, American and Canadian troops also fought for our freedom in Germany and the rest of europe. For ever grateful for that.
Excellently summed up and the film footage was of a really good quality. Well done!! Even today as a veteran of another war, my heart goes out to those poor sods who under immensely difficult circumstances, bravely did their duty.
thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of the men and woman who fought in this war to allow the world to live with freedoms we would never of had today if not for their sacrifices. JUST IMAGINE HOW THE WORLD WOULD BE NOW IF THEY DID NOT DO SO. GOD BLESS YOU AND BE WITH YOU.
My grandmother was a switchboard operator for AT&T when the war started. She then moved over to bomb making factories out of Jacksonville Fl.. That lady had some amazing stories to tell. Not a day goes by that I don't think about and miss her... Love ya grandma!
Rick this is wonderful! Seeing the men move about reminds anyone that they were real people, not just black and white images in an old history book. I have an interest in American Civil War as well as WW2 and what I came to learn was that many of the photos were taken with stereophonic cameras and finally a book came out that had a stereophonic viewer and those pictures came to life! So thank you for what you are doing!
Wow! If you are used to viewing WW2 content taken from analog cameras, then you are in for an unexpected treat. The "super HD video" presented here offers much digitally enhanced images that virtually place you in these events as they happened. Well done, Rick88888888 and associates!
Thanks for the great film! Alongside with others. These videos almost make you feel present there, destroying the barrier of time. That logistical and engineering operation was stupendous, unmatched in modern history.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FOOTAGE, EDITING, WRITING/SCRIPT AND PRESENTATION...THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN...WHICH IS SAYING ALOT.... WELL DONE SIR...THANK YOU!!!!
What an amazing video , it really brings it home what these brave soldiers went through and the planing of D DAY . Never seen any coloured film before of D DAY , till now . Thank you for sharing the video . We will remember them 🙏
The words "We start the war from here" were attributed not to president Roosevelt but to brigadier general Teddy Roosevelt, assistant division commander 4th Infantry division who landed on Utah beach with the first wave troops. The commentator got it all mixed up.
Just extraordinary! Utterly outstanding production. As a lifelong student of history, I am surprised to say that so much was learned from this video. Truly top notch stuff. You have gained this subscriber, and I humbly hope for more with the same care and consideration for future projects. Thank you for your work on this content!
My dad was a army ranger that went up the cliffs, he didn’t say too much until I came home from Nam. He told me of the Nazis shooting down on them, he told of many thing I never heard but he killed allot of Nazis, which it was sad. No man should die in war, I watch my share in Nam.
One small correction: On finding they were in the wrong area ; it was General Theodore Roosevelt that stated we will start the war from here. Not President Roosevelt. Otherwise an excellent video.
It's so hard to even imagine the bravery of these guys. I can sort of imagine go to start a battle but knowing a few kms ahead of you is literally hell and you're heading right for it is bonkers. I like to think I'm a reasonably brave guy, but I'll admit, I'd be pissing my pants.
Without the US though there would have been no D-Day. Britain did not have the numbers for such an invasion nor did Commonwealth and other allied nations.
I have (found) enough footage to make 2 hours of D-day... The problem is checking what is copyright-free. I am thinking about making a "D-day stories" video with D-day footage as background.
Astonishing. What a magnificent effort from the allies. Some footage I’ve never seen before. Never heard of Pluto before- amazing! Looking forward to part 2
Wow! Ive been watching this stuff since little…i was born only 26 years after ww2 ended, but this is by far the best enhancement of video ive ever viewed. Ive seen much of the same video as have many of you, but not so clear and colorful…literally makes it appear as if it’s happening in real time. Neat…humbling.

I'm the son of a WW2 Normandy Veteran Joseph Grace holder of the military medal for bravery 🇬🇧 They gave everything for our freedom 🇬🇧
freedom today 😂
My Grandfather on Germany's side. He was rescued by Canadian medics under artillery fire after being seriouly woulded and immobilized. He always spoke of how well he was treated as a POW in Britain. Could not have asked for more fair and honorable opponents.
The British, American and Canadian troops also fought for our freedom in Germany and the rest of europe. For ever grateful for that.
Excellently summed up and the film footage was of a really good quality. Well done!! Even today as a veteran of another war, my heart goes out to those poor sods who under immensely difficult circumstances, bravely did their duty.
I'm glad you enjoyed it
I am blown away with the visual quality of this .
Superrrr genoten weer van deze beelden Rick! Zo mooi gedaan en de informatie die je erbij geeft. Dank weer en kijk uit naar de volgende!
Absolutely outstanding! Thank you Rick
Thank you kindly!
@@Rick88888888 So many people appreciate your remarkable editing and presentation.
thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of the men and woman who fought in this war to allow the world to live with freedoms we would never of had today if not for their sacrifices. JUST IMAGINE HOW THE WORLD WOULD BE NOW IF THEY DID NOT DO SO. GOD BLESS YOU AND BE WITH YOU.
Yup imagine that... To bad
Thank you to the creator who brought us this account in full colour. and for honouring the many brave men who fought and fell in this great endeavour
Thank very much! It's just me doing this...no associates.
This is superb! Thank you!
Superb reproductions of original film. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for the great film! Alongside with others. These videos almost make you feel present there, destroying the barrier of time.
That logistical and engineering operation was stupendous, unmatched in modern history.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent historical, commemorative, 80 years ago, D-Day video!
Great images! I learned something new with the details on operation pluto. Thank you! Looking forward to the other releases!
Thank you Rick, we should never forget the sacrifices made.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FOOTAGE, EDITING, WRITING/SCRIPT AND PRESENTATION...THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN...WHICH IS SAYING ALOT.... WELL DONE SIR...THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks for the great video Rick! We were there last week 1st - 8th of june, for the 2nd time already.
What an amazing video , it really brings it home what these brave soldiers went through and the planing of D DAY . Never seen any coloured film before of D DAY , till now . Thank you for sharing the video . We will remember them 🙏
Hartelijk dank. Eine gewaltige Arbeit mit viel Mühe. Ich bin den D-Day Männer zu tiefst dankbar für meine Freiheit.
Excellent Rick, thanks very much!!!
The words "We start the war from here" were attributed not to president Roosevelt but to brigadier general Teddy Roosevelt, assistant division commander 4th Infantry division who landed on Utah beach with the first wave troops. The commentator got it all mixed up.
Absolutely incredible! Thank you for sharing. Those under sea pipelines were wild!
Astonishing video quality, and well put together and narrated to bring home the reality of events at the time.
Way better than most 'professional made' documentaries I have seen. Kudos.
what a great story, thank you so much the terrific content and the narration
Its a brilliant video.
Thank you so very much for showing
We owe so much to them..
Bless to you all
Just extraordinary! Utterly outstanding production. As a lifelong student of history, I am surprised to say that so much was learned from this video. Truly top notch stuff. You have gained this subscriber, and I humbly hope for more with the same care and consideration for future projects. Thank you for your work on this content!
Glad you enjoyed it!
My dad was a army ranger that went up the cliffs, he didn’t say too much until I came home from Nam. He told me of the Nazis shooting down on them, he told of many thing I never heard but he killed allot of Nazis, which it was sad. No man should die in war, I watch my share in Nam.
Excellent work on this documentary. A proud moment for freedom.
Thank you Rick. Greetings from Denmark.
Thank you, wonderful job!
Thanks for posting this video
One small correction: On finding they were in the wrong area ; it was General Theodore Roosevelt that stated we will start the war from here. Not President Roosevelt. Otherwise an excellent video.
IIRC It was Theodore Roosevelt's oldest son, Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., TR, Jr. was a brigadier general and the 4th ID's executive officer.
Wow , in colour the footage looks like it was filmed recently , absolutely fantastic to watch , thanks. 🇬🇧🏴👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for acknowledging that the Americans were not the only ones there.
Thank you. I did struggle to find film footage of the British beach landings (Gold and Sword). Over 80% of the available films is of US origin.
Without the US though there would have been no D-Day. Britain did not have the numbers for such an invasion nor did Commonwealth and other allied nations.
What an outstanding effort and contribution to the memory of those who gave all that they could give. I’m deeply grateful.
Absolutely brilliant, thank you very much
Glad you enjoyed it
Outstanding records and true footage , complements sir.
MARVELLOUS. Many thanks.
Fantastic work. Been following you for a long time now and I love your work.
Great! Thanks
Hey Rick . Great Doco . You have a shit ton of footage I had never seen before and that's after watching D-Day footage for 20 years
I have (found) enough footage to make 2 hours of D-day... The problem is checking what is copyright-free. I am thinking about making a "D-day stories" video with D-day footage as background.
That was a brilliant documentary. Thanks.🏴🇬🇧
This is brilliant Rick, just catching up on your videos now.
"LOOK ARROUND YOU TODAY AND YOU SHALL SEE WHO WAS RIGHT"
Thanks for mentioning the many other nationalities that took part. Polish, Greek, French, Australian, New Zealand.
Thank you for mentioning the Rhodesians taking part, such a small country that sent so many men per capita. Great video you have put out here!
Astonishing. What a magnificent effort from the allies. Some footage I’ve never seen before. Never heard of Pluto before- amazing! Looking forward to part 2
Part-2 is not finished but you may want to watch my follow-on documentary about the Mulberry harbours that played an enormous role during D-day.
People of greatness!!God bless him all! Portugal
Superb production. Many thanks!
