For real though! Hell I wouldn’t have tried to learn how to do chief’s voice if it wasn’t for Steve Downes cuz that is what Made Chief so iconic. If he would of had this voice I would of not played halo at all and would of stayed away from the game like the plague.

And also, fun fact, Steve Downes almost didn't make it for the role of Master Chief in HALO 4, they had planned to give it to someone else, but after auditioning for the type of turn they wanted to take for his character, he was back in board. Crazy that we almost lost him!

yeah, Keyes (the mission in halo ce) calls chief a cyborg, and the player bipeds are still called "cyborg" internally
I always wrote that off as Well, he's alive on the inside with a real human brain (and body) and super mechanical and robotic on the outside, fine, he's a cyborg, whatever.

I know Steve Downes is getting older, so I hope with 343 potentially getting their act together under Pierre that they're able to find a good balance between Steve getting to play Master Chief as much as he wants and giving Master Chief a satisfying conclusion as a character.
I'm not 100% opposed to someone else playing Master Chief when Steve eventually passes, but I think it would be better for Master Chief to have a good conclusion and a new character to take up the torch.
I’d rather they just have a new character. It just wouldn’t be master chief without Steve downes. But in order to that, they should build up a side character while chief is still around. So that once chief is gone, the new main character is somewhat developed, and it doesn’t feel like they just pulled him out of their ass.

Chief is still technically a cyborg
I get what you mean, but Chief isn't part machine. That was the original intention, then they went hard into the whole Spartan idea which I much prefer. He's still a powerful human in a suit of armour but still very much human.
His armor is machine, and it's definitely *part* of his identity. Cyborg isn't that far away
The spartans in Halo, Chief included, are absolutely cyborgs. They have a neural link in their heads that interfaces with the chip slot on the back of the helmet. That's how Cortana gets in his head.

I refused to believe all his enhancements are just some super soldiers serum, If I remember correctly since the dawn of halo, he's always been cyberneticly and biotechnologically enhanced
@@jerrbear5958 He's had plenty of augmentations that made him stronger, and those augmentations gave him higher bone density as well as plenty of other things. I'm just saying he isn't a cyborg. I don't think a neural link or chip slot automatically makes them cyborg, but I could be wrong!

Do you think Halo still would've been the iconic series it is if they'd kept that voice? I don't think I would've been as mind blown playing a robot protagonist like that. The concept we know was a smart change and nice middle-ground. Chiefs humanity really adds to the stakes, you're a warrior of the highest kind, yet you feel so small and futile.

That voice was never planned to be the final, it was a place holder. Before Steve came along, Jeff Steitzer was actually originally cast for Master Chief. Then they asked if he wanted to do the multiplayer announcer, and now both are legendary

The NPCs and enemies still occasionally refer to him as a cyborg in Halo CE. Seems that Bungie still hadn't fully fleshed out what a Spartan was yet, but realized the robo voice was a bad call.
So that’s why the grunts still have dialogue referring to master chief being a cyborg. How interesting

I think they did that because of Marathon, cuz in marathon you play as a Mjolnir Recon Battleroid #54 who’s a cyborg and Marathon and Halo have so many similarities it wouldn’t surprise me if prerelease Halo was just a Marathon game plus in the showcase he says “Recon reporting”

I love Steve Downes as Chief, but the original voice is also kinda cool I don’t think it’s that bad, I think if it what ever used, it would be interesting, but that’s just my personal preference, like, Master Chief sounding like that even other Halo games even after Combat Evolved, that could be a good Halo What If.

If you look back at the manuals too, even in the Gearbox PC port it says that the Spartan II's are cyborg super soldiers. It also says that Chief is that last Spartan II. (I just pulled out my old manual to check too)
They also called them "SPARTAN-II" Which implies that Spartan was just a codename or maybe even an acronym.
Gotta love that Halo lore was inconsistent even between the first game, novels, and manual. XD

Steve Downes said in an interview that he didn't realize how popular halo was until he was at a friend's house one day whose son was playing halo. He was like "oh yeah I was the guy. I was the main guy. The master chief" not thinking much of it. Next thing he knew, word had spread and there was a line of people at the front door wanting his autograph.
It does make sense for Chief sounding robotic, being a living weapon and all that, but the filter was unnecessary and overall they made a good call with Steve Downes.
Damn, and i thought what Darth Vaders voice could have been was bad
the E3 chief voice was just one of the developers voicing him as a placeholder one due to not having an actual voice actor for him yet
