Ngl, as a Native Washingtonian who goes between WA and CA a lot, the driving topic is a SERIOUS issue. Many people from WA, including myself, are starting to get really angry with the insane drivers moving here. We're pretty mild mannered here, but it's going to be a big problem if it continues on like this. If you're going to move here, you need to drive like you respect human life.

I really get it! I'm in Reno, and drive to California a few times each month. The drivers are whackjobs! Speeding is nothing...people drag race in traffic, and treat stop lights as suggestions rather than the law. I am getting to the point where I hate to drive, and have been rear-ended at least four times in the last few years. I'm seeing more and more crazy drivers in Reno...frequently with California license plates.

@@feliciasampson8032 . . .funny, not funny, my 2nd ever drive to WA (Lake Oswego was my first and yes, I got some frozen stares while shopping downtown), some lady pulled up next to my car and flipped me the bird, and as she sped up, stuck her whole grown hand out the window still in the bird position waving it wildly. Something I never thought possible for ever I bought my first home in 2016. In 2020 I sold my home. I paid $107k for it and sold it for $242,500. I didn't have to pay any taxes on my profit. In 2022 my son, a submariner in the US Navy, was transferred to the base in Bremerton and he bought a house here, requesting that mom and dad came to live with him. As he will return to a boat in 2025, he felt it would be wise to have us in the house.
We moved to Bremerton in February 2022.
Speaking for myself only, I liked the endless pine trees (we have a bunch of really tall ones in our backyard), the hwy traffic (mostly on Hwy 3 near our home), the grocery stores (we use Winco), and a few other conveniences.
I cannot adapt to the weather, as I hate cold and I hate rain, imagine the cold/rain combination.
Traffic here picks up between 2 and 4 PM, because it's the shift change time at the Naval Yard, where thousands of people work, but it happens at certain streets that are around and/or lead to the base. It becomes pretty heavy at those times.
Another thing I disliked is less than ideal street/pavement and lane marking maintenance. I feel that in Bremerton is pretty inadequate.
Finally, why do traffic lights take so long to change? The other thing is, DO NOT ASK ME TO GO TO SEATTLE.
Of course, all this is minimal, except for the weather. I am and will always be a California person, but my son deserves me putting up with whatever bothers me.

Local road to Hwy 24, thence Hwy 13, connection to I-580, then I-238 (connector) to I-880 (Nimitz fwy), then Hwy 84 (cross Dumbarton Bridge), HWY 109 to US 101 to Moffet Field. I think you need to clarify that you are comparing SoCal to PDX. Puget Sound area is totally different in almost every aspect.
CA real estate tax is .73% the property value. WA is capped at 1.01% the property value. Each city/county can vary. I can tell you Puget Sound area property tax is at that 1.01% cap and is way more then a similar valued home in Orange County.
Cost of living is a wash when using Seattle as the benchmark. Gas, house costs, food... similar. Services are way more in Seattle. Agreed, electricity is way less up here... 9c/kwhr in Snohomish County.
Regarding the weather... it is colder and wetter in Puget Sound compared to PDX. And PDX is warmer in the summer. The killer is how short the days are in the winter... go to work it's night, go home its night and it's gray all day.

I can attest that our move from California to Clark County Washington in 2012, we experienced the same "big surprises." I'd long feared "nasty" weather (though moving from the SF Bay Area was less of an adjustment), still going from around 20 inches of rain to 40+ inches of rain seemed daunting. While traveling around with our Real Estate agent, he commented "it mostly rains at night, here." That seemed a bit weird to me... but there's quite a lot of truth to it. (Yes, it does often rain in the daytime, too, but a LOT of storms do most of their raining after dark. (Science item: when the sun goes down, the cooling of the atmosphere can trigger rainfall that had been threatening but never quite "committing" during the day.) The other thing about the rain storms is "sun breaks" -- a term I'd never heard before. (In the Bay Area, which experiences "coastal effects" rain storms are always accompanied with "high fog", leaving the area solidly grey during passage of a storm. No visible sun during rainy days, at least not until the storm is breaking up.) The rain is also not so heavy, and while I have an umbrella tucked under the car seat, I've only pulled it out a couple times over the past 9 years.
The other factor that really impressed me was the very reasonable cost of electricity. The national average is something like 12-15 cents per KWH. The local rate is a flat 8.17 cents per KWH (plus a base "account charge" of a few dollars). In California, we had a "tiered" rate, that after a "basic allowance", the price would increase as you crossed various multiples of your KWH "allowance" (e.g. base rate of 15 cents would jump to 20 cents for usage beyond 125% above the allowance, and so on. At the time I lived in California, I had a marginal cost of 25 cents pre KWH and sometimes hit the 35 cents per KWH tier---I understand that it's much higher now. (I had a home business that required operation of 2 to 4 computers and 2 large laser printers + air conditioning most of the year to keep everything from overheating.) My typical electrical bill ran $300 to $400 per month. (And there was no "business rate" because I lived in a residential neighborhood, nor was there any other allowance that allowed any relief on the bill.) While I no longer operate the business, my electrical bills here are a modest $50-60 per month using nearly as many KWH. Truly the "best" of the surprises. (Natural gas is also much cheaper here due to flat-rate charging, but there are too many other factors (better insulated house, etc.) to make a fair comparison. Bottom line, my energy bills are less than half what I was paying in California.
The last point is the value of housing. When we sold our home in the Bay Area, it was just as the housing market was in the early stages of recovery after the 2008 "crash". We sold a 50 year old ranch style home of about 1800 sq ft (that had been remodeled and had many updates but it was "ripe" for a flipper as there was much else that could have been improved) for about $350K. Remarkably, we were able to buy a 2200 sq ft, brand new home in Clark County WA for the same $350K! (Subsequently, our old house recently sold for just under $800k after a "flipper" fixed it up, while our now 9 year old "new" house is "Zillowed" at about $600k. Not a bad deal... Point is, someone selling a property in California, can likely considerably improve the quality of their home for about the same money.
One last point. If you do move here, please leave behind your "politics." While WA is a "blue" state, outside of the large cities (basically a "linear city" running from Olympia north (through Seattle) to the Canadian border) it's generally fairly conservative. That tends to keep a lid on the excess spending of "blue state" politics -- with a major assist by some provisions in the state constitution. (We have a "part time" legislature, with very strict limits on the session length and alternating "long" and "short" sessions every other year. When the legislature isn't in session, they can't pass ill-considered bills!)

Your video gives me hope! I moved to Port Orchard in 2018, after years in Tahoe. Unfortunately, the job didn't work out and I've been living in Reno since 2019. I fell in love with Washington, however, and am looking for the right situation.
I left a fairly lucrative field and am working as an activities/engagement coordinator at a senior residential community. I love the work but it barely pays the rent and living expenses.
I'm hoping to land a similar position and wondering if Vancouver is worth a look (I've only been to the Starbucks and Fred Meyer off "the 5" - yes, lived in SoCal for years!). I have a good friend in Kalama, one in Tacoma, a couple I'm friends with in Sequim, a friend in Sammamish, and another couple in Kitsap County. I'm planning on taking a week off asap to explore some more.
I'm quite drawn to Sequim, Port Townsend, Gig Harbor, Mannette, Edmonds and Bellingham, but you've really got me thinking about Vancouver. I like smallish towns and cities...Seattle and Tacoma were a bit much after years in Tahoe.
    My questions:
    1) Is Vancouver senior friendly? I'd love to continue working with higher functioning seniors. This is nothing personal but I'm not interested in skilled nursing or memory care facilities. Something more in line with Del Webb or Leisure World.
    2) Since I'm also a senior...64 years of age - will I fit in? I'm very active. I go to the gym regularly (I'm about to begin my weights workout in a moment), ski, hike, snowshoe, cycle, kayak, etc. Just wondering if there are other boomers I might meet.
    3) I would be renting, and since I'm currently single, would be fine with an ADU. I'm social but not so keen on roommates unless it's a significant other. Is it possible to find an affordable ADU in Vancouver where I could walk to coffee shops and still be close to the outdoors?
    4) Is Vancouver dog-friendly, and are there off-leash trails? My wonderful mutt, Lacy passed away at 17 years of age. She was my hiking buddy, and we loved hitting the trails year round with our 2- and 4-legged friends. I can't adopt in my current living situation but am hoping that will change once I'm in the PNW.
I've already turned down two jobs because of poor timing. We're currently very short staffed, so I'm planning within the year rather than this month to make the move.
Sorry this is so long! I'll look forward to your other videos. Thank you for giving me some hope!!

In my opinion California isn’t horrible and I definitely don’t hate it here but I’ve still felt like I’m trapped here and have wanted to escape probably since like late elementary school. I’ve wanted to live in Washington so bad for a long time. While a part of me is enjoying still being a kid and enjoying senior year and wanting to save money through community college and not having to do crazy adult stuff, another part of me just cannot wait until I transfer out of state and finally escape

You’re doing the right thing. Community college when I was a senior in high school was looked down on. It’s definitely a better decision- don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Likewise with moving out of CA. I’m a native Californian too, but have always felt I didn’t really belong here; trapped like you said. Super smart as well- continue appreciating your time as a young adult, but being hopefully for new open experiences is always good too! Already so wise. 💕 you’ll do great!

Electricity depends on where you live in California. Living by water cools the air. I rarely use my heat in the winter or my air conditioner in the summer. I am in the San Diego area. Washington may not be as "diverse" as some states, but it can vary by city and region.
Check out City-Data.com, (use the hyphen) you can select the state and then the city -- in each "city" you can select down to various neighborhoods (census blocks) and get a good picture of what each one looks like economically, physically (e.g. multi-unit buildings and single family homes, etc.) and population statistics (males v females and various other characteristics). You can zoom in to individual census blocks, as well. Vancouver (WA) breaks down as 69.3% white, 13.7% "Hispanic", 5.9% "two or more races", 5.1% Asian, 3.0% black, and Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, American Indian, etc. for the rest.

Whites in WA State think that you wont see a ton of 'racism' in Seattle and in this state. They really think their 'LA' wannabe Liberals. Other state/cities have a even playing field with people of color. WA state never will. They 'patronize' themselves because most here live in 'Emerald City(yea..'Oz'), and they need to click their heels 3x, and deal with reality, and cut their BS in regards to local 'diversity'. Contact Hispanic businesses in Burien, Kent. Speak to them and others about their real feelings here..P.S. I was born and raised in western WA and can honestly say it’s a mix. Sure residents from larger cities like Seattle, Everett, and Tacoma you probably won’t have any negativity. Yet in smaller towns like Puyallup, Snohomish, Arlington, Bellingham etc. You might run into people that are a little jaded. Mostly it’s do to the rise in the housing market the past few years. The locals that are trying to buy their first home for example in places like Everett, WA can’t find much for under $500k and even if they do find something they get bit out. I’ve heard stories that list was $500k and they got into multiple bidding wars and out bud by $70k. Which I get it if you are relocating from So Cal. And sold your home for Million+ it makes total financial sense for you. Just thought I’d give you a perspective from a local. I think if you relocated and expressed genuine love for our state and how we can continue to make this place as special as it is and not as how California used to be. I think you’ll just love it. Keep in mind that she is a Salesperson... We have also lived in Southern California for most of our lives. I moved to Vancouver Wa as well about 3.5 years ago.. The only thing I agree with you on is no income tax... We can not wait to leave the region. Portland is a dirty disgusting crap hole of a city.. and too dangerous to do the candy coated life style that she is painting. This is confirmation bias... and appeal to authority.. Just because she is saying this stuff does not make it all correct.. Using stock images is not the reality.. Eight plus months of gray and wet is so freaking depressing.. Do you want to get cozy and watch Netflix that much? The traffic in Portland Sucks!!! Very rude and crazy drivers.. The speed limit comments are a laugh.. We could go on and on.. The property taxes are in fact high if you want a nice home in a somewhat safe area.. etc etc..

For (at least some of) those who grew up with 8 months of grey, it's the intensity of the cloudless summer sun and long summer days that bothers us rather than the comfortable grey skies lol.
I go outside in shorts and a tankini on the drizzly days in the winter to enjoy the outdoors.

The Washington suburbs? I find all the areas in SW Washington to be family friendly. But I guess it depends on how you define family friendly. Activities & events, parks, walking distance to school?

    • @halbyrd_
      @halbyrd_  2 роки тому +1

Well, I guess it depends on your perspective. It doesn't apply to real estate. Only applies to individuals, not businesses generally. And only applies if the profits (capital gains) exceed $250,000 annually. So there are lots of exemptions around it, but again, I guess it depends on your personal situation, the types of assets you hold, and how good your CPA is 😊 You can read more about it here: dor.wa.gov/taxes-rates/other-taxes/capital-gains-tax
