You are so right about an easy to set up softbox. Rod and speedring softboxes are a night mare to deal with. An umbrella style softbox with a boom arm is preferable.

That collapsible softbox would be wonderful! Mine are such a pain to setup that I did it once when they arrived and they have never been collapsed again. I transport them face down in the back of my car. And at home they live on the C-Stands or stacked in a corner.

Gavin, while I loved everything about this video, I must ask: isn't there equal importance on a good stand for a first light box? Yours seems so versatile and it helped you with your options. I get the feeling that a good stand is almost as important for expanding the options available to a photographer. Could you expand a little on stands?
It looks like a standard C-stand. Possibly with a sliding leg. Personally I like the Neewer ones as they're cheap but as durable as you'd expect from a C stand. You could throw these things off a roof and it would likely be just fine.

you did a video with the 3-flash Flashpoint/Godox lighting kit (3-300s, stands, couple of boxes and an umbrella in a case. it took me 15 minutes to get one softbox put together. the second one was about the same amount of time. i have them stacked up on a high shelf and rarely even consider getting them out because i bought some Glow ex-up (whatever theyre called) and like that smallrig box of yours, 12 seconds and ready to go. Chloe's make up reminds me of Pris (Daryl Hannah) in Blade Runner (1982). WHERE did you get that material? that was the coolest thing. or whats the best description of it so i can look for some

Hi Raymond. My lighting diagrams are all my own work and have eveloved over time. There's some great software and even some free diagram tools online but I've not tried any to be able to recommend them.
I noticed you took the light reading from the model's point of view, pointing the meter at the light source instead of pointing it at the camera. Pointing the meter at the light source gives you a reading of the full light hitting your subject, but pointing the meter at the camera will give the reading of what the camera will see. Am I incorrect?
I meter for the highlights (pointing the dome at the light) but way, WAY more importantly I always meter towards the light. Right or wrong, it's consistent and that's what really matters.
Hi Nicolas, what do you need to know? I use a Tethertools USB cable to connect my camera to my laptop and Olympus Capture software to connect the two. Olympus Workspace software displays the imported photos in full screen.
uh oh... you are gonna get yell at by Seth... He just spent half of his last live video saying those diffusers don't make light "softer" but more defuse aka less specular highlights. 😅 I'm with you tho... I still say "softer" 🤘
I dunno about the below comment re: skill of Hoey. First off, the Softbox Above position was, well, just plain wrong. It needed to slide toward camera 2.5-3'. THEN it would have had a nice presentation. He also falls into the same trap most wannbe teachers do, never explains WHY to do anything (just put the center of the box closer to the head height). Why? Once you understand that the human brain is programmed from birth to expect light sources from above (aka the sun) then it makes sense. Its not that light from other directions is bad per se, just not what the average person is accustomed to seeing. Moreover, the examples using the various light modifiers (diffusers, grid), sorry, but I've viewed tens of thousands of frames of film (yeah, real honest-to-God film) and the only place I could really see a difference in the lighting was on the WALL. I can't remember the last time I shot a blank wall, I want to see the FACE. Then let's talk about the use of single light source photography. ESPECIALLY when shooting people, unless going for a special effect, you never light so far from the side without a fill source, be it a card or other reflector (hey, an unpowered softbox works fine). People lighting, 1:2 highlight to shadow ration or about 1 stop difference. Either that or you move the light much closer to the camera axis. I won't even touch the subject of silvered vs white box interior or why and how the diffuser material actually works.
Loved the final "tube" outfit, and the last lighting position being so close. Very dramatic. Well done to all !

Thanks for the kind words. The fabric came from an online fabric store. I think it was listed as 70cm diameter stretchy tubular fabric.

What is the official name of the “tubular fabric”? The whole video was informative, but the creativity you showed using the fabric was amazing.
