Great video, Gavin, Chloe and team! Thank you for showing so clearly what happens with the different options. This is what we need: You've been clear and to the point. Happy New Year!
Another great tutorial, thanks for the inspiration you give to me and many more. Feathering the light was not mentioned with some of the modifiers, with but you have covered that before.
Thank you Gavin, it provides actual output using different light diffuser. To my eyes, I prefer the sofbox with grid; horizontal narrow and the round one. This will be my go to when I retire and have my own studio at home.
Great examples. One question...when using an umbrella, how close to you put the flash to the umbrella as there is a lot of room to play with the way it's connected. I hope I explained that correctly.
I know i am not Gavin but let me answer anyway. If you have an 7 inch reflector on the strobe make sure the edge of the reflector is in line with edge of the umbrella. I hope that helps. I am not sure with speedlights you probably have to zoom the fernel head.
The umbrella essentially becomes your light source in a sense so you typically want to adjust your light (speed light or otherwise) so that if fills the umbrella surface but doesn’t go around it. But you could adjust the light so that it only fills part of the umbrella and it will give you a little bit more of a direction because you’re not filling the umbrella with light. So simply move the umbrella closer to or further away from the light until you get your desired outcome. If you have a modeling light this can be used to give you an idea or just hit the test fire button on the light itself and see if it’s filling the whole surface of the umbrella or not. Hope this helps, every umbrella will be different based on the size of that umbrella.
Hi, barebulb would not work as the light will spill everyware, esensially making the umbrella unnecesary. All you have to do is zoom the flash and insert the umbrella until the light barely touches the edge of the unbrella. If it goes beyond the edge, just pull it back out until the flash iluminates only the umbrellas fabric. 😀 A strobe with a modeling lamp makes this process a lot easier as you can constantly see the amount of umbrella fabric that is being iluminated. In an umbrella it is better to be short than lomg, meaning that it is better to insert the umbrella more even though you might not iluminate the whole umbrella than to go long and have the flash iluminating beyond the umbrellas circumferance. 😀
You just saved me getting all mine out to see what they do 😊 Really useful thank. How do you manage to swivel your strip box ? I’ve got mine on a Bowen’s mount on a C stand on a boom arm 😊
For this set-up, I think you're right. The catch light would change on tight shots and if this was a feathered light compression there'd be a difference too.
Hi Gavin, This is very interesting and useful information. Great tutorial, Can you make a tutorial, How to use live Tethering in shoot ? Humble request Thank you.😊
Good question. I could only include the results from light modifiers I actually own (and actually use) and that doesn't currently include a beauty dish 😉
Chloe has grown more gorgeous more and more. Great tutorial Gavin. By watching ur videos, it really inspire me to do studio shoots. Thank you
Chloe looks stunning in those colors!
This is epic! Great to see what each does all in one video! And Gavin’s explanations are always easy to follow!
Gavin, you are trully impressive with showing tips (and the timing is perfect I am about to get some New ones this year), Thank You!

Hello, Interesting comparison, Gavin. Also, the AMAZING Chloe, it's amazing how accurate she nails the same pose on every shot!

Superb tutorial again, Gavin (and the lovely Chloe).
very informative gavin, i am always impressed by the wealth of information
I cant wait to break out my godex 32 inch softbox this spring
Chloe is beautiful and makes a fabulous model!!😊😊
2025’still best video on showing the difference in modifiers I’ve come across
Love the vertical softbox result the best. Always great to see real world results like this to make a true comparison 👍
Always fun watching Gavin and company:)
okay....
ive had to watch this 3 times because Chloe just distracts me from what youre saying! so lovely and she makes that red dress POP!
Would love to see a combined image of all of the modifier samples together (labeled of course! :D)
Bravooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you back into the world of colours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fun fact. Plan A was to do this against a white background to be "technically" accurate but buttercup yellow and red just look sooo good together 😁

@@jerrym8140 Thanks, Jerry...that helps a lot. Is it better to go bare bulb so the light is not as focused?

BTW ignore all the mispellings fat fingers on a tiny cellphone keyboard LOL
My favorite was the umbrella
Thank you, Gavin. Love your work!
Happy New Year to Gavin and the whole team!
Great video Gavin. Nice and concise. Happy New Year 🎉🎉🎉
Wonderful demo. Always inspiring Gavin is
Do love my strip box (and grid), very versatile in any location
Thank you soooo much for doing this! Has helped me alot
Gavin amazing video. I have a question, what is the camera focus to use with speedlite? Manual or automatic? Thank again to help us. Teacher
My camera focus is always set to AF with face+eye detection turned on.
@GavinHoey thank you so much. I have been learning a lot with you. For exemple I am watching right now your video "just one prop"
For an umbrella which size is preferable ?
That vertical strip box is my favorite from this comparison. Now I need one 💸😆
You just saved me getting all mine out to see what they do 😊 Really useful thank. How do you manage to swivel your strip box ? I’ve got mine on a Bowen’s mount on a C stand on a boom arm 😊
I liked the umbrella the best. Why did you not take out the 7ft indirect umbrella or did you sell it Mary Poppins?
This is a great vid. There was no rectangular softbox, but that'd probably just have the same result as an octobox, so no need.
For this set-up, I think you're right. The catch light would change on tight shots and if this was a feathered light compression there'd be a difference too.
Very interesting video. Thanks Gav
Great video. Super helpful.
Thank you! Would you consider doing tutorials like this with older models? Those with more "character" ? Cheers

Hello Gavin, thanks for sharing.
Happy new year Chloe and gavin team
Thank you Gavin, very helpful!
omg love the model
Awesome!!
Thanks Joseph 👍
Great all the time. Thanks!
Amazing training
we love you SO from France 🥰
What about light patterns and dispersion for beauty dishes?
Good question. I could only include the results from light modifiers I actually own (and actually use) and that doesn't currently include a beauty dish 😉
I am the first viewer and first commenter, Hello Gavin!
Olá Gavin, você andou sumido do UA-cam.
❤
Stupid Question #1: Why does the background shift from yellow in the video to orange in the photos?
Chloe 😍
Beauty dish???
Sadly I don't own one.
