This is an old question/video, but for anyone wondering this same question: the closer to the subject, the softer the light. Also, the larger the modifier, the softer the light.
I love how you combine lighting diagrams, footage of what you're doing, and results. It greatly helps to see everything side by side. Thank you for your videos!

I can’t help but laugh 🤣 I’m actually waiting for her to literally fall asleep and fall forward. Omg I’m sorry lol. I love your videos, JP. I learn a lot
And yet so many girls want to be models, that's because they don't see what models do only the final results. A tleast she didn't have to stand there in her bra and underwear like we used to have to do at fittings for high fashion shows.
" How the light see" or "How the reflector see" great concept, !! Also what mood you want using specific reflector , very well explained . I have now a clear idea what I need, thank you.
Very good and well articulated video. I like how you talk about what the softbox "sees." A good way to put it. More, and more understandable, in seven minutes that a lot of guys do in triple that time.
Once again, I'm most great full for your off camera lighting videos. You truly help me build a foundation of what it takes to understand how to light my subject.
Thank you not only for making this video but making a whole series of Laws of light. I was about to purchase Amazon lighting/studio setup for my product/portrait photography setup but I think I should watch this whole series before I spend anything on anything. P.S. You are an amazing teacher and after watching this clip just once I can teach all that to anyone. Thanks once again.
I am always getting harsh hotspots on model face Using 120 cm octa Far or close Using Godox v1 With grid or without always hotspots on forehead and nose
Purchased a softbox and haven't used this much. Doing a mini photoshoot with a friend's baby tomorrow and this video helped me tremendously! Saving this video for future reference!
What a timely upload! I'm about to do my second studio job this weekend (first one was disastrous). This is exactly the info I need. Thanks for your work, Jay!
Thanks for this video. There are way to many videos of people just talking about soft box lighting. I don’t really understand how that helps anyone lol. Nice to actually see the effect of it.
This is hands down the best video Ive ever seen on the subject of using a softbox. Thank you for having made this easy to understand and very informative video that is very helpful to me.
Brilliant video. Thank you. I just got my first Umbrella/softbox. I took pics of my family going for a Rembrandt look. Worked ok but my subjects were not very willing models.
Thanks for this, it answered the exact thing I needed. Was trying to figure out the best softbox to evenly light a wall from about 2-3m away. But at that distance it seems no to matter that much.
0:45 Place softbox horizontally for softer light + more fill. 1:06 Place vertically for harder, moodier lighting. Place at back/side (or combo of both) for even moodier lighting. 1:38 Feather light for really dramatic lighting, completey black background. 3:04 Interesting light setup to try. 4:04 This light setup narrows the area of coverage, creates vignette. 4:46 Large vs small softbox. Look at example; smaller = more contrast. Prefer this one.
now was that so difficult? Great video - I have been waiting for this information in video for years (from all sources) should have known you had it all along.
Great thanks for letting us know! Have you seen the rest of our Laws of Light series? Check it out here: ua-cam.com/play/PLuReQyMP8EfpPyI0WkAKWWfrajt9eO9Fp.html
Maybe it is a silly question but, I am not schooled in photography, but do enjoy making memorable images. Does a soft box flash in any way when you push the shutter? Do strobes flash? Backlights?......or are you creating light so that you don’t need a flash or if it does, what flashes? Maybe basic questions but I don’t know. I totally understand how to use light, as I do water colour painting and wildlife photography, and understand light placement etc.....just learning the whole flash, strobe, led thing. Thanks!
Hi Randy, these are great questions. I would recommend you check out my Laws of Light playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLuReQyMP8EfpPyI0WkAKWWfrajt9eO9Fp.html

You mentioned in the video that a large softbox gives more wrap into the shadow side of the face, my question is, is the amount of wrap affected if you add a grid? Great video, thanks sharing. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Fantastic video and beautifully explained thank you. Can I ask is there any difference in the quality of the light between high end strobes and for example the Neewer model I have? I can never seem to get that cinematic feel that these videos always produce. I appreciate post processing is a big factor but the quality of your light visible I the video was beautiful.
When a photographer finds a setup that works for them is it okay if they shoot that with every single client, does this define his or her style, or is style something else?
even a professional photographer doesn`t have to invent the wheel new every shooting, so, I think it`s ok as long as his clients want him exactly for this "style" because they like it or they don`t care at all because they only want to get a good looking photo which is different from their smartphone selfies...ok, I would call all this a "marketing" style - but on the other side a "creative" photographic "style" should be something which makes a photographer visible different from all the rest...ok, that`s the most difficult part of photography ever, this has more to do with art, creativity and an open mind - one example: there are many pros who can take realy good looking pictures with one ore more speedlights in nearly every situation, but for me there`s only one photographer whose photos I would recognize immediately because for me he`s the Godfather of multiple speedlight photography and that`s what I call a "personal style", for me that`s Joe Mcnally
A super informative video thankyou :) I need a SUPER SUPER SOFT DREAMY light for my online Yoga classes against a dark rich Red Caliente background with Ink Black matt floors. Id like to have the walls and the floor remain darker and the soft light on my face and body. I love what you are doing here in this video! I just bought the Neewer 770 watt Softbox and find it super harsh light that gives hotspots on your face, Im super disappointed! What is an inexpensive and beautiful light source / bulb / box or combination that you would recommend I try to put to practice?
Thank's for the video. In 5:45 it looks like you had a mistake because the tight photo with the title "small softbox" look like it tooks with a large softbox ( less shadows and softer light).
Hi Jay great video. Hey any tips on lightening up those lower eyelids? Would that just be lowering the height of the soft box possibly? I tend to film when I’m tired and and just trying to come up with ways to not look as tired on film if that makes sense:)
Interesting concepts. For me, I prefer contrast. A big mod is great for things. Base exposure. Then a tight contrasty light on the impact/model, to make them stand out. Soft light is wonderful but it makes the model/impact blend in. I want the model/impact to stand out.
I didn't see you taking any pictures so I'm not sure if that's a strobe and the light we see is the modeling light or it's continuous light? Re: I'm using flashpoint strobes but it's difficult to shape the light with just the modeling lights. So it's constant chimping
No, a small box far away will be the same as a large box far away. They become single point light sources as you move them away from the subject matter.

The color on cheeper strobes can vary. The largest challenge for strobe users is to get soft enough light. Large soft boxes look great.
