Sal, you absolutely killed it !! The way you explain this is so clear and direct. I'll definitely be applying these technics on my next studio session! Thanks for doing this!
I knew the blue filter shooting straight into the lens would give a much better look than the orange even before you shot it. Best photos out of the bunch .
Great timing on this video. I’m hosting a content create day and was messing with my lighting for uniqueness. I will definitely be trying the flash into camera technique. Thank you as always Sal!
9:59 you're absolutely right; it's rare that strobes produce the correct output after a settings change. Great tip to dump the power and and have the strobe charge up for the correct burst.
Always informative, Sal. Thanks. Why did you select a strip light for your fill light? I've been taught that the fill should be the softest light, so it doesn't create a shadow of it's own, so a larger softbox, umbrella, or even a scrim with a light firing through it.
interesting... hmm... i was mentored... where the key light was the largest and softest source since that was your main light. fill light you were basically seasoning to taste to get your final image balanced.
no its not a mistake. general rule we all try to follow is never cut at the joint, but in fashion work, etc - thats not always the case - take a look at any magazine... BUT that being said... expression always wins out. so think about it - we could change crop... and come in a little tighter and then that changes things too. so lots of options with all the mega pixels in the unverse today... and i would imagine.. within the next year... we will prob have technology that we can expand the frame it AI gives her her fingers back... lol. we shall see. :)
if im understanding you correctly - i will disagree with you. ive been a run and gun shooter my entire career. AP is 100% better than manual in these situations because you are not in a stable environment - its changing when you turn left or right - move around in a given location, etc manual mode you would have to adjust with every single change in scene and even focal length. manual mode is perfect for in studio or controlled light environments where there is little to no change.
Hi Sal. So aperture priority outdoors, because the light is being fooled outdoors, do you do something like Central weighted to get it honed in a little bit tighter especially with side and backlighting or side rear side lighting coming in?
the question could be asked... any reason you use capture one over lightroom? :) on a serious note - ive tried and used capture one many times over the years and while i will admit their software produces a superior final exported image...i find their software to be rather clumsy in working real jobs... ie selection, image comparison, sync features, etc - its quite clumsy in that way. now to be fair... i havent tried it in the last 2 versions, but from what ive seen in the releases not much progress there. whats your experience been?
i dont use TTL. always put the flashes in manual mode. this way you are controlling power vs the camera. now that being said - i dont recall the actual power on each flash because ultimately its tied to the ambient in the room and whats needed from a creative perspective... do you want to shoot at f2.8 or f8? that would require some creative decisions and ultimately dictate power settings. does this make sense?
not really. its really good on a small set of images - i do love the output from it. i think its far superior to lightroom in that way, but its also a bit cumbersome when working with large sets of images. or cataloging, etc.
i dont know dude... ive been doing this for a lot of years and ive never seen ANY NOTICABLE difference in my final work... my final prints, etc. i work in ISO 50 as well as 200 almost by default. I know at a sensor level there is a difference, but not one ive seen make a difference vs being able to move faster. ie... recycle times on the flash, etc.

Thank you for this tutorial🙏
You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed.
Thanks Sal. At 18:46 you said you really like that. I would have probably deleted it because fingers were cut off. Is that a mistake for me?
no its not a mistake. general rule we all try to follow is never cut at the joint, but in fashion work, etc - thats not always the case - take a look at any magazine... :)
Well because when you're in manual it allows you full control. Also AP is good for portraits, sometimes not for run and gun.
if im understanding you correctly - i will disagree with you. ive been a run and gun shooter my entire career. Great video Sal! 👏🏻👏🏻 what light meter do you use or recommend??
Sekonic L478DU is my go to!!
10:11 Dump it!!! ⚡😂 When will that shirt be released?
haha... totally needs to be!
Hi Sal. So aperture priority outdoors, because the light is being fooled outdoors, do you do something like Central weighted to get it honed in a little bit tighter especially with side and backlighting or side rear side lighting coming in?
great question... we do weighted average.
u are a genius :)
you are too kind! ty ty!
Great advice!
Glad you liked it!
Cool lesson!
Thanks! 😃

Is there a reason you use Lightroom over Capture One ?
the question could be asked... any reason you use capture one over lightroom? :) on a serious note - ive tried and used capture one many times over the years and while i will admit their software produces a superior final exported image...i find their software to be rather clumsy in working real jobs... ie selection, image comparison, sync features, etc - its quite clumsy in that way. now to be fair... i havent tried it in the last 2 versions, but from what ive seen in the releases not much progress there. whats your experience been?
legend!
ty you are too kind!! glad you enjoyed.
Awesome shots, awesome model, really love her outfit, learnt some stuff also!
Glad you liked it! 😊
The question is what are light power of each light? I'm lost😢 Are they on TTL? You said you're on aperture priority. Thanks
i dont use TTL. always put the flashes in manual mode. this way you are controlling power vs the camera. now that being said - i dont recall the actual power on each flash because ultimately its tied to the ambient in the room and whats needed from a creative perspective... do you want to shoot at f2.8 or f8? that would require some creative decisions and ultimately dictate power settings. does this make sense?
Do you ever use Capture One?
not really. its really good on a small set of images - i do love the output from it. i think its far superior to lightroom in that way, but its also a bit cumbersome when working with large sets of images. or cataloging, etc.
OK cool. How about a shoot where an obstacle is included like a hat and dealing with the brim? Hat brims often cause issues.
great idea!
Muchas gracias.
Rocked it brother - Thanks for all you do!!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Do you host workshops?
WE DO!! check out shutterfest.com
Real photografer
ty ty!
Uau. This girl is very beautiful.
agreed!
Why ISO 200? Why not native ISO 100?
i dont know dude... ive been doing this for a lot of years and ive never seen ANY NOTICABLE difference in my final work... my final prints, etc. i work in ISO 50 as well as 200 almost by default. I know at a sensor level there is a difference, but not one ive seen make a difference vs being able to move faster. ie... recycle times on the flash, etc.

Great video but I think I may have missed your Models info :-) What is her IG
😅
Lol. True ! Manual mode does not make you pro. Especially in variable light working Manuel just doest work
bingo!
Say what?! What does "kind of mid" mean as an insult? Kids are stupid...
It's slang for basic or ordinary, which technically is what mid means anyway.
@quentin6233 Why is "normal" (what ordinary technically is) an insult? Does everyone in the United States suffer from delusions of grandeur?
Don't be intimidated by Putin
lol i didnt think i was.... not sure what this means.
