    Put lockers in the older vehicles, or run the new one without its lockers, and the capabilities of both old and new will be far more similar than they are different.

      Dont all wranglers also have brake lock diffs too anyways? Even turning off the lockers, that system seems to work great.

      No, new jeeps have way more articulation. Meaning the wheels stay on the ground which if you didn’t have a locker would still have traction at one of the drive wheels.

      @@mcfero1 as a samurai owner, the sway bar is worthless, no use on road or off-road. If they removed it it would probably be enough to give it the articulation to climb that hill without spining tires, even with that small road tire.

    Lockers aren't modern tech, they are just more common now.
    Buy a rig for under $4k. Learn to work on it yourself. Install lockers. Remove sway bars. Have good tires put on. Now you have a vehicle that is just as capable as a new $50k Wrangler for a fraction of the price and you won't be afraid of getting scratches and dings.

      I found an 89 Jeep Comanche (MJ) last year for sale and kicking myself for not buying it, it was already built, lockers front and rear, lift, tires, etc....$15,000 damn nice truck and an awesome price for what all was done to it, lockers were ARB so it also had onboard air, that's over $2k right there, and tires/wheels another what $1500-2k so you would have got an awesome pre-built truck for far less than that bloated Wrangler Rubicon hype.

  • @BlueDually4x4

    But you could put lockers in either of the older trucks and sway bar disconnects and still pocket close to $30,000. Its not a new VS old, its over priced VS cheap. And if you tip the Suki on its side, you don't need a winch or a second vehicle, just climb out and tip it over by hand.

      @briandesjardin9381 5 років тому

      I like simple too, but don't hold your breath on simple coming to a new car dealership any time soon. First off, mandated safety stuff adds thousands to the price. Then, although you and I vote for simple, not enough consumers are willing to buy a new vehicle without electric windows and locks, AC, cruise, etc to be worth spec'ing one like that. Good thing there is still a decent (though dwindling) supply of simple older vehicles around to coax along through a few more years. By the time today's babies go looking for one, something like the Comanche or Zuke here will be fetching prices that a clean FJ40 or Gen 1 Bronco go for today.

    People lamenting “it’s not the good ol days of crash’n & bash’n” ... “we call this section the Head Banger, you’ll bounce your head off the A-pillar or window so watch yourself” ... newer vehicles make it child’s play.
    The people that complain are they same people that purposely fall off a tall slide & call you a sissy for making it all the way down. “I’m pretty sure I broke my arm, that was awesome, you took the easy way, wuss, see how the bone sticks out, pretty sure that’s marrow, getting a little lightheaded, man that was fun” 🤣

  • @CarsAndZebras
    @CarsAndZebras 5 років тому +7

    Well of course modern tech is more capable... but it's also more difficult to work on yourself. And then of course when you break something, which you will if you off road regularly, your costs are quite a bit higher with more tech.

  • @curlylarrymoe

    There is hardly any new technology in the newer jeep. Solid axles, locking diffs, sway bar disconnect, short wheel base, good approach and departure angle, good break over angle, ground clearance., good tires, good low end torque, low crawl ratio, articulation. That is what matters offroad. New tech can suck my ass.

    I have a couple observations in regards to the Rubicon you fail to ever mention
    Transfer case gearing for a much better over all reduction.. This a is huge feature you guys never talk about. But In darn near every truck video you guys will make a huge deal over how one truck has a 4.10 rear axle ration vs the then other truck at a 3.73 and stuff like that which over all means little to nothing since you dont take into account overall final drive ration or torque converter stall..
    But here you have a transfer case in a jeep that makes a huge difference in over all gear ratio allowing much more control and you never speak of it.
    Also the other difference you never mentioned in this video is the difference between the auto tranny and manual tranny. This is also a factor that allows lower gears essentially with that torque converter slip. So both of these previous items allow for much greater control when combined with lockers..
    Now both the jeep and samurai you can for VERY cheap add lower transfer case gears and a a couple lockers. yes not stock I know, but much cheaper than $51k
    That would be a great video. Showing the difference going up that hill with both the jeep and the samurai before and after lockers and lower transfer case gears.
    You could install "lunchbox " style lockers very cheap. Or go arb and spend big bucks. Performance would be the same going up that hill. Just better street manors with the arbs obviously.
    Tcase gearing is extremely cheap for the samurai and for the jeep a little more.
    Over all you guys are geniuses since you make videos like this constantly and you have a huge following just praising you for every little thing you guys do. But there are videos you can make that are very technical and correct that show real world actual improvements.
    Let me bring my little old Toyota pickup with double transfer cases, 33's, lockers and very mild suspension out and show you what I mean. :)

      @scrappyjackalope9558 5 років тому

      @@wildbill23c yea it can get insanely low for gearing with the doubled up gears. I also have a lower gear set in the back tcase(over 200 to 1) and you can not stall the motor at idle. 4wd both lockers locked in you can not stall the motor in the lowest gear.. something spins or breaks :) have never broke..hahaha
      I live 2 hrs from the Rubicon trial as well as Fordyce and the low gears get used regularly and make the journey over said trails much more controlled. Mostly run in single low but there are plenty of obstacles that going double low or lower is very much useful. Marlin crawler here on UA-cam has a couple videos showing the difference on difficult obstacles and it is really clear the advantage. I have been running duals in toyotas now for almost 20 years and it is awesome..

I got very lucky because the deer was running full speed and therefore pretty low and the stock bumper handled the impact well. But had the deer been higher, she would have been into the plastic grill and cooling system. A pre-runner bar might have helped reduce damage to the cooling system.

    Quick question regarding your ORI scale. You stated that a vehicle at 99+ can tackle the Rubicon trail, and that no factory vehicles so far have achieved that. If I am not mistaken, any Trailrated Jeep has been tested to pass the Rubicon Trail, including vehicles like the Compass and Renegade, which would not score very high on the ORI scale (but for good reasons, no arguements here). What do you guys think in regards to that? I am not trying to be confrontational, just asking as someone who loves your guys videos and have a much better appreciation for cars and offroading because of you guys. :)

    My questions to you are. Do you think the Rubicon will still be around in 30 years? With all of the electronics and computors in it, and the way those items are continually being outdated will it still be serviceable or even drivable in 30 years?
    I know there is really no way of answering that, but it does make you wonder if older isn't actually better.

      Carbs are still around, and will be forever imo. The early efi from the 80s is obsolete. More and more stories about those ecm’s and sensors dying off makes me think they will go to the junkyard. Any old carbed truck/car will get a rebuild or a new Edelbrock/Holley and be ready to roll. As for off-road, Holley now makes off-road carbs too

The technology on the Wrangler is not new, it's been around, it just happens to be included, hence the price tag.

    Cringe factor for new is the real issue. Even IF that Rubi was as narrow as the old Willy's you would be cringing about brush and what have you. Once the cringe phase is over with tho, that Rubi is going to be the best thing you can get for trail crawling.(next to a TRD of course ;) ) Nice you utilized your pitch and roll gauges as you were putting along. When you are discussing how steep or articulate things get and say.. "don't know if you can tell on camera how steep this really is" it sort of seems pointless to even mention it at times. So this will give you something you can illustrate.
    I just use the water bottle for visual Q and my phones level app. for precise degree determination. :) You should now bring your LRD up that same trail since it is between old and new and has been modified to compete with straight out of the factory performers like the Rubi.
