Two Recommendations if you haven't already:
#1- swap to a 180° (TD5) thermostat to lower coolant temp by 10° and enhance the longevity of the head gasket and further prevent overheating.
#2 - check that you have zerk fittings on the front prop shaft U-Joints. Land Rover did not supply serviceable UJs - and is the cause for the EXPLOSIVE failures that can take out the transmission and cat convertors. If you haven't converted you're just asking for that grenade to go off. The pin is pulled! Just swap out the UJs to ones that have the fittings (or purchase a fully reconned prop from Great Basins Rovers) The Double Carden joint on that front shaft conceals a pin grease fitting that if you don't look for it you'll never see and never service. The pin grease gun fitting is about $10 from NAPA. Grease 'em all every 5K.

The BIG secret to Land Rover ownership, is to always have at least 2 or 3 minor things broken. If you try to get it perfect, something else will snap, leak, fall off or catch fire in protest. Least, that has been my experience over the past 25 years of ownership! 😂😂😂

You couldnt be more right, was replacing the head gaskets and broke all three studs from the exhaust manifold on the 2000 disco. Now gatta get that replaced. She was running fine with the head gasket leak but thought I'd go ahead and fix it...

@@kevindiehm7404 You now know better for next time 😂😂 Exhaust studs are always a pig on Land Rovers. The only way I found that they came out without shearing was to heat up the manifold with a gas axe first. But then all the oil in the local area of the engine bay would go up and melt some crucial bit of the wiring loom. 😱😱

Strange thing is I still see my 1986 Ninety D420JRL in Edgbaston that I sold in 1989 with some frustration that I was always underneath it tightening up things falling off and now it's managed to grow a hard top and convert itself from 2.5 petrol to 300 TDI . I'd buy it back in a heartbeat at 3x what I sold it for, but suspect the lucky custodian has it for keeps!

Where do Discos tend to leak, is it past the transfer-case driveshaft oil seal?
If so I would imagine some aftermarket oil seal mfg wouldve built a retrofit kit, I mean 3 aftermarket companies have kits for the Porsche 996 IMS motor bearing, and that involves not just an aftermarket bearing cap to hold a lubricated plain bearing, but also new oil lubrication lines and tap fittings installed.
I guess it would be a straightforward aftermarket solution if the transfter-case seals and bearings are secured by a cap-ring, if they're installed from the inside of the transfer-case with a cap on the inside, aftermarket would require re-machining the transfer-case and that would turn expensive in a hurry.

This is the first positive video about Land Rover that I've seen since I moved to the US. In the UK, where I'm from, practically every single farmer has a Land Rover and they have a reputation for being reliable work horses (as long as you maintain them properly). Maintenance isn't that expensive there, due to the mass availability of parts and the fact that most mechanics are used to working on them. Having had many myself I have to say landys aren't "unreliable", yes they let fluid in and out in the direction they shouldn't, yes things come loose, yes rust RUST is the normal killer 😢but they are rarely not moving under their own steam, they soldier on. In the UK there are more left on the road in relation to numbers produced than any other car which says a lot.

Tommy, great video, and one thing I can say is that old Landies actually like being used - they hate being an occasional shopping trolley - Things you can do - if you ever hear a little chirping sound when you start to move off, or if you feel a metallic clunk when going from reverse to drive, then the front prop UJ's are starting to fail and you MUST replace them ASAP! When they fail the flailing propshaft destroys the gearbox. Other things you can do - fit a Freelander thermostat - this is rated a few degrees cooler than standard D2 spec - so will help prolong the life of that engine. Replace the MAF sensor with a genuine one, check the fault codes and ensure all O2 sensors are working. Will help a bit with fuel consumption. Also do oil change to gearbox (they are NOT sealed for life!) diffs and transfer case. If you don't have lockers then also use some friction reducer in the axles and the engine to help give smoother running and fuel consumption.

The coolant leak is the timing chain cover gasket. It will blow out on the upper left side. It’s just cracked now but when it lets go fully it will pour out like crazy. The gasket is the weak point. It is an utter pain to replace, you basically have to take the whole front of the engine apart to replace a $5 gasket. Other than that I had absolutely no problems with mine and still have it. Love my disco. Bought new in 03 with 4 miles on it now 165k normal were and tear items have been replaced. Buy a spare now I have a feeling these will be the new fj40’s in the next couple decades.

Head gaskets are not that bad, I did mine over a weekend. I would recommend using the head bolts from 1993 Land Rover Range Rover with the 3.5 liter. The head gaskets leaks are usually caused by the torque to yield head bolts ( they loosen up over time ) and the bad head gaskets ( would recommend fel-pro gaskets ), the heads themselves are usually not the problem.

So I’ve owned 4 D2’s (02, 03, 03, 04)and have 1 with the engine out right now and one with the engine completely disassembled. If you want to know exactly how to do the head gasket job Atlantic British has a great step by step video and these engines are relatively simple, almost like putting legos together. Where I’m from in Georgia, you can find rough examples of these for under/around 1000 about 2 or 3 times a month. The 4.0 is supposedly less likely to slip liners as the 4.6 but the drop in power of the average 4.0 is undesirable to me. You can take a 4.0 block and put 4.6 internals in it for a “more reliable” but more powerful engine but that would be a completely rebuild and thousands of specialized work. TopHat liners are about the best thing for these engines and once installed increase the value of the vehicle. For your case I don’t really think a parts truck is necessary and since you don’t really work on your truck anyways it doesn’t really seem the most viable.

  • @beenusirimanne

Honestly Land Rovers aren't as bad as they are made out to be. Most of the horror stories we hear of sky high repairs and expenses is from idiots who never maintained their Land Rover, and it gave them back what it got. I personally have owned a 2006 Discovery 3 - 2.7 TDV6, and in 13 years, only 2 things have gone wrong: EGR Valve, and a cracked intake hose (£400 total in repairs). That's because I always check the car for any problems, and deal with them before they can develop. These cars will refuse to die if you take care of them.

  • @15buggie

My favorite series!! I’d just replace the headgaskets or buy a 4L and do those and swap it. The 4L is known for slipping liners much less than the 4.6. Smaller the displacement the less they do for some reason.

Two good points about owning one: (1) you can find lots of parts from junked discos since more people are ditching theirs instead of maintaining them and (2) its square when everything else is round these days, and sticks out among the crowd in a good way i think.

Have a 2003 disco 2 same shape, same lights but a diesel.Everyone has laughed at me when I purchased it.We all went 4wdriving on a beach, 2014 Jeep Wrangler overheated and got bogged in sand, 2018 ford wildtrac got bogged and blew a gearbox, so I pulled him out in the most unrealiable 4wd ever. I love this rig, though it's standard, she does rough and gnarled tracks easily......

I love my Disco 2. The bonus of having the headgaskets done is you can do other fun things at the same time bump compression up a bit, maybe throw a cam at it.. could be a fun build series

My step dad has the same Disco with about 2 inch lift as a dedicated Off Roader and we use the heck out of it because its so dang comfy, i just love it. dare i say even more than his previous 1974 CJ5 with a 6 inch lift, lockers, skids and a Chevy truck 4 speed. here in southern AZ he says its about 90 percent what that old Jeep was for off road ability but fully enclosed with a cabin air filter with climate control is a huge step up

The problem with a Disco is that they have too much personality, you're going to live with all the flaws because of what it does.

I have a 2003, D2, with 155,000 miles. Put an ARB front bumper after somebody hit my stock bumper. Then installed an Old Man Emu suspension with heavy duty springs and matching steering damper, EBC brake kit, new ABS modulator, new longer steel braided brake lines, new wheel hubs with ABS sensors on all four, new CV joints, did the transmission service, paid about $4K for a head gasket job and a new radiator, replaced differential fluid front / rear and change motor oil with Castrol GTX 10-40 weight every 3,000 miles. I do most of the maintenance myself and it’s lots fun and easy to work on. I even replaced my battery with an Optima yellow top and the alternator at 150,000 miles. Despite all the repairs and proper maintenance, my D2 has never left me stranded and I love working on it! I can load so much cargo, that I cannot do in other vehicles. It’s just so comfortable to drive and gives me a great commanding view of the road ahead. I will continue to drive it, maintain it, repair whatever needs repairing and keep it forever. I just don’t see any other vehicle that compares to the capabilities of my D2.

I have owned my 03 Discovery for about 15 years, and it's been a great truck, very few repairs. Normal maintenance things. I have replaced the radiator and hoses. The abs modulator has a cracked trace on the interconnecting circuit board, the traced go to the shuttle valve switch. Not hard to bypass with wire. It has some oil leaks, But I don't need to add much between oil changes. I change oil one a year, full synthetic. It does great off road. The suspension travel really helps it maintain traction. The traction control works great. I bought this because I wanted a 4x4 that performed well without modification. I only modified when I had to replace a part. My springs were sagging, so it got a OME lift. Bumper covers were cracking, so It got steel bumpers, and a winch. I haven't got stuck in this truck. I have only used the winch to move other vehicles. I pull a M101 trailer off road with no problems. It's a great truck.

I know this is an old vid but wanted to add my experience... Have a 2006 Range Rover HSE with 160,000 and I bought it with 65,000 on the clock. It has some off road mods (tires, light bar, rack etc..) and it has no leaks, no issues, runs like a clock and the only foot it stepped wrong was a rock through the radiator on the freeway but thats not its fault. Ive pulled out over a dozen rigs in snow, sand and mud but have never been stuck that required assistance. Overall, this thing is a beast and thought it looks tired with pealing clear coat, some dings and worn leather with some holes, its been an amazing 4X4.

For head gasket problems in the Disco try TITAN polymer based sealant. I bought my '04 Discovery 3 years ago for $1200. Beautiful truck but leaking head gasket. Previous owner thought repairs would be prohibitive. I did some sleuthing and found this product online. No probs with it since and said to last 5 years! It's pricy ($139) but it works! (NOT A PAID AD)

I've always had a soft spot for Discos, especially Disco II's. They're like the poor man's G Wagon. That thing does a pretty damn impressive job off road for what is essentially a worn out, stock vehicle... even with that lame engine.

I had a 2000 Discovery Series II. Drove like a dream in bad, icy roads. Put Hankook Ipikes on it with aggressive mud / snow tread. Leaks in the oil pan gasket and valve cover, but just added AT 205 Reseal liquid gasket rejuvenator - one bottle is all I needed - half to the engine oil and half to the transmission oil. Drove it about 300 miles to activate it. Leaks stopped. Saved me a lot of $$$.
