4 Your Eyez Only is the fourth studio album by American rapper J. Cole. It was released on December 9, 2016, by Dreamville Records, Roc Nation and Interscope Records. The album was Cole's first release with Interscope-his previous albums were released by Columbia Records. 4 Your Eyez Only was released exactly two years after Cole's previous studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
Most of these recordings took place from 2015 to 2016, while the production on the album was primarily handled by Cole himself, alongside several other record producers such as Vinylz, Boi-1da, Cardiak, Ron Gilmore, Frank Dukes, Chargaux and Elite, among others.
The album was supported by two singles: "Deja Vu," and "Neighbors". All 10 songs from 4 Your Eyez Only debuted in the top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100. Cole achieved twelve simultaneous Hot 100 entries in a single week. Promoting the release, Cole released a one-hour documentary (by the same name) on April 15, 2017 on HBO, featuring music from the album. In June 2017, Cole embarked on the 4 Your Eyez Only World Tour, to promote the album.
4 Your Eyez Only debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, selling 363,000 copies in its first week (492,000 with additional album-equivalent units), earning Cole his fourth consecutive number-one album in the country. It had the third-largest weekly sales for an album in 2016. The album also debuted at number one on Billboard's Canadian Albums Chart. The reception for 4 Your Eyez Only was general acclaim; many critics praised Cole's songwriting and called it his most mature album to date. It appeared on several music publications' year-end lists. On January 12, 2017, 4 Your Eyez Only was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, and was certified Platinum on April 7, 2017.
some low energy from us in this video as we just recovered from covid, but we tried our best. next video should be better
worked in your favour tbh, the energy is perfect for the content of the album
word, chill vibes
Hope y'all are feeling better!
No need to apologize! In a way it fits the vibe of this album and encourages closer listening
your guy's energy was matching the vid and honestly i saw no difference great vid as always
my fav cole album. might not be considered his best but it moved me the most and holds a special place in my heart
exactly this.
Easily my favorite album Change is my favorite song of all time
Exactly 💯💯💯💯
Def an underated album of his.
😢 I’m tryna make it out the hood so on my UA-cam channel i do food reviews while I’m super high brotha
4 your eyez only. What a special song. One of the best hip hop songs ever and imo undoubtedly coles best track.
Absolutely it blew me away when I first listened to it. Same could be said for this while album its underated imo and one of my favorites
Facts it’s #1

Agree
Storytelling masterpiece
Change is the most underrated cole song of all time. Almost a perfect track.
change is one of his best songs
Foldin clothes is underrated as hell
change has made me legitimately cry on multiple listens
literally perfection
Underrated? It’s in like everyone’s top 5
The way this album sounds and just makes you feel the emotion its supposed to convey is really amazing
I appreciate the Folding Clothes love, everybody shits on it relentlessly LMAO
No one does that
@@vegetatheveggie2547 everyone does that
@@vegetatheveggie2547nah everyone does
They shit on it because like Cole says in G.O.M.D. "this is the part that the thug skips." People who never had that sort of relationship just can't understand the song.
My favorite J. Cole era. This plus the three singles he released around this time were just so soothing. I miss focused, concise albums like this.
what's the third? off top, I remember false prophets and everybody dies but can't remember a third
@@CJ-rq8th don’t think there was a third
@@CJ-rq8th high for hours
@@Alex-xl8fc that’s right, great track
Much later but I’d say The Climb Back fits that mold too
This album is just too good, it has songs for all of your moods. Immortal for getting turnt up, Deja Vu/Change for a relatively relaxing mood and 4 Your Eyez Only if you're into more lyrical storytelling. Classic album, 10/10.
I don't see a lot of people say this, but I don't think Change is as chill as people make it out to be. Yeah it's asthetically great cause of Ari's vocals and the beat but I think it's just as great an example of storytelling mastery as 4YEO is.
@@dylanwatt7461 facts
@@dylanwatt7461 that's why I said relatively relaxing, shit goes hard
I'm always feeling lyrical 😅
I still cry every time listening to the title track. Wow, what an album.
I know, here I am crying again lol. You know how it ends but Cole just has that gift that takes you right back
It's so heavy and relatable. All good men would do anything for their kids. It gets me everytime. Love your family fellas ❤
She's Mine pt.2 into 4 Your Eyez Only is enough to break anybody
You have to show your dad the documentary for this album. For me personally, it gave me a much deeper respect for Cole.
What’s it called??? Love this album
@@ericsotelo40574 your eyes only- Dreamville film on UA-cam. Fantastic watch
When he was talking to the women who lost 2 sons i Think was powerful.
@@nonexist688that was a beautiful part but my favorite part was when he went to Michael browns vigil and ran into his best friend that was with him the day he was killled
It’s a perfect album. I think it’s hard to judge it until you understand the meaning, the purpose, and the ideas behind the album. Such a complete piece of storytelling and an easy 10/10.
I agree
spoken like a true j cole stan
Be honest with yourself bro i like the album but 10/10??? Lmaooo
@@Narcissist-xf5rh 10/10
@@tylerblair318 I’m a Cole fan but 10/10 is just dick riding 💀
My junior year English teacher assigned us different J.Cole tracks to dissect and write analysis on, I was assigned Change. Listened to the track and was instantly blown away, don’t listen to it as often as I used to but it’s impact will remain with me forever.
Damn, what a cool English teacher
The best thing about Folding Clothes is after the almond milk line, he says "you soft." Even when he's being tender with his woman, his street mentality still lives there. He can't just have almond milk without making fun of himself. Subtle but crafty of Cole. Keeping the theme alive.
‘4 Your Eyez Only’ the song will forever be my favorite song of all time. the story telling was the best i’ve ever heard
real
it was my favourite song for 2 years. I found out abt Kendrick and heard SAMIDOT and ever since it's been 1st but 4yeo is a very close 2nd
@@dylan.h3673 u got any reccommendations for songs similar to samidot nd 4 your eyez only
The outro still gives me chills everytime
This is a different Cole. Maybe not the type of album we asked for at the time but as time goes by you realise just how important and amazing this album is. He made this album cos this what he felt like he needed to make at the time for himself and without us realising this is an album we needed. Cole probably knew how this was gonna pan out in years to come.
Nostalgic album man.. especially Change. takes me back to sophomore year 🤧🔥
He is absolutely floating on that beat and it’s so satisfying
Sammmeeee
This album is my fave album of all time. Every song is beautiful and just holds so much emotion. Both of She’s mines never fail to make me sob just with the gentleness and love he has. I can connect so much with it due to how much love I have for my sister and how I want to express my love to my mother and this whole album allowed me to kind of get a glimpse into the way a father more specifically my father thinks as well. That love and pain he has to hide and push through is so much.
I’m so happy you can do this with your dad and I really am jealous.
But this album was what got me to really just start expressing my love to my family and friends. To those who got this far all I gotta say is say that I love you to those who you love it might be a little weird but every time you say it it only gets easier. It’s crazy how much a little bit of love can open your world.
Bruh… literally everything you just wrote in this post could’ve been as if I wrote it🙌🙏
For me, this album is Cole's Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. He truly found his lyrical voice in this album and upgraded him from a MC on the sidelines to one of the most prominant figures in hip-hop. I haven't heard a bad album in Dreamville since. I mean Bas, Lute, Cozz, JID, EarthGang, Ari Lennox? Dude has all the infinity stones and is ready to snap.
Word brotha man!
Nah this was his TPAB, FHD was his GKMC as it had a more mainstream appeal while also maintaining good storytelling. This was all storytelling backed by great bars and production although off from the main sound. Just my opinion tho
This album is very underated in his catalog, it's a brilliant album and deserves all the praise.
the nostalgia in this is crazy, ville mentality and change are two tracks which helped me through some tough times
i dont care this is HIS masterpiece
the album is a story about J Cole’s friend, named James McMillen, who died due to his environment in the hood as he was trying to better his life. What makes this album super impactful is that J Cole constantly makes Jame’s ambiguous in point of view, displaying a connection between Cole’s life and McMillen’s. It’s only apparent that James is a real person when it is revealed in “Change”, bringing him to life just as he died
This used to be my favorite album about 4-5 years ago and I would play it all the time.
It’s grown off of me a lot since then since I’ve gotten into lots of other hip hop music.
One thing I gotta say though is J Cole is so focussed, and is rapping so well over these tracks. Neighbors is crazy
Also, I never understood the hate for foldin clothes. Ever.
@@wealthywop I never saw it as hate i just consider it the worst on the album, not bad but there is better
Your dad is such a pure soul, hope he's well, much love and best wishes to both of you!
the title track is seriously mind blowingly impressive
I went years without hearing she’s mine part II, until I finally reheard and now with kids that track TORE me up. What a gem! Love Jcole man!
"Neighbors" J Cole is actually speaking from his perspective as well. Its a true story that actually happened to him. In fact, theres a youtube video of him on stage performing the song and he actually shows his security footage of the police raiding his studio looking for drugs.
The title track from this album is the only song that makes me cry or get emotional when I hear it every single time. Can’t explain it but it’s so beautiful and painful and well put together by Cole. Love it so much.
Lets gooooo ! Super Cole fan and Change is my favorite Cole track. So happy y’all are reacting to this grossly underrated album
4 your eyez only is one of the best written tracks of all time
Love seeing Kevin's progression through these. Went from reading off genius to going in blind and letting the music guide him. Best reaction channel hands down
He was still reading
@@nikkidew6754 not for the first track. He’s also been getting better with it in other reactions. I commented this early into the video tho, I didn’t realize he was still reading. Still impressed with him :)
reading the lyrics helps you understand the lyrics
Haven’t listened to this in years. Refreshing. Feels like in a way I was listening again for the first time
Change is my favorite song of all time lol
He is floaaaatinggg on that beat
Some might consider it boring but for me the album invokes a nostalgic emotional tone that takes somebody like j cole to do at such a high level. Its like youre diving into a memory cloud and coasting through it.Perfect for the mood when you just want to reflect and glide into you thoughtful side.
This album brought me back man, so happy you guys did this one. I’d argue that the last verse isn’t the only verse or song from coles perspective. He actually went through what he rapped about on neighbors. There’s even footage of his house being swatted because his neighbors actually thought he was selling drugs lmao. In pt. 2 he mentions Ib a close friend of his, then says fuck this album shit. Pretty sure he had a kid of his own right around the release of this album. Idk, I’d like to hear other peoples thoughts on this as well, I may be reaching lmao
I agree, a lot of this album is about the parallels of James and Coles lives, until the part where James dies.
Yeah you're definitely right. I think a lot of the album he is speaking from the perspective of his friend but it's also inspired by his own real life events. He's def drawing from his own experience of getting married and having a child on pt1 and pt2. And Neighbors, I saw him at a concert a few years ago and he went into detail about what happened to him on that song before showing us the footage. In fact his official music video for the song is just the surveillance tapes of the cops raiding his house. You can find the full concert explanation on UA-cam
Every time I hear 4 your eyes only I get chills. The way the track flows all the way till the last line. 😢❤
I remember when this album was first released, reading all the comments online seeing 90% of people (cole fans) trashing it. What a masterpiece "I guess enough time just ain't passed yet, a couple more years that shit'll be illmatic"
yeah, I think we all thought for your eyes only was going to be something else and overtime. It really has become a classic album. because I remember people weren’t feeling the album like that for me personally it wasn’t until I went to the for your eyes only tour that I went back revisited the album and now I can listen to it as much as I listen to 2014 Forest Hill Dr. KOD is a different story through
You guys should Listen to Joey bada$$ 1999 he was 17 when he made that album and is so talented and you guys would definitely be surprised.
Been saying thus
They’re about to enter the Cole World
One of my favorite albums of all time, such an emotional and beautiful piece of art that holds a special place in my heart.
I can tell 😂
Thank you for doing this album. I love this album and listen to it every week.
I think one of my favorite parts of Change is at the very end, the whole funeral scene that he did was mind blowing when I heard it in headphones for the first time. And I just think one of the genius things is how he put all of those pieces together to make you really feel it deep. Top Tier Album
Change is one of them songs that defines your understanding, awareness and appreciation of life
I really needed to return to this album. So glad to do it with you guys
This one is special.
Really underrated J.Cole Album
Only with 10 songs an album that teaches you
shows you what real feelings are in this world, what really counts in life through songs like she is mine pt, 1 and 2, changes, 4 your eyes only
I can't describe it better
people need to hear it for themselves
“Shows you what real feelings are in this world” 🤦♂️ lmao
Can’t wait man, cole changed my life
Gotta listen to Isaiah Rashad - Cilvia Demo!!!!!!
One of the best replay value albums of all time. Always hits differently this time of year. Thanks for another great video guys!
this is my favourite J cole album, and i’m so excited to hear kevin’s reaction to this beautifully tragic story
awesome it;s crazy i never noticed that the story of 4yeo was a complete one and from start to finish about one person from one to another. a great story teller for real
One of my top three albums ever in my life
I was in my freshman year of college my first winter quarter when this dropped and every time after my sociology class I would do nothing but bump this in my headphones just in love with coles voice
One of the best best albums seriously needs more recognition
I remember when this came out. I was listening to it on the bus while travelling with friends. On repeat. Such a meditative, meaningful, mellow album. Thanks for the refresher and glad to see your dad enjoying it ❤
YES this is cole’s best album the whole concept was beautiful and 4YEO still brings me to tears every time I hear it
Still patiently waiting for watch the throne...
such an amazing album, the emotion it conveys and the way it just makes u feel the emotions and captures u in this feeling. My favourite cole album and forever one of my fav albums in general
Such an underrated album among J. Cole's discography. A lot of people call it slow, or boring but it's a very mature narrative album about growing up and parenthood. Haven't watch the video yet, but I'm sure it's something your Dad will relate to and appreciate.
I’m glad you guys reviewed this album, I asked you guys months ago to review this and here we are.
j cole being my favorite artist i was extremely pleased with this video. loved the reactions your dad had
New father here. I loved this album when it released, listened to it on repeat, and then kinda forgot about it for years until revisiting it with this video. Cried a little bit after she’s mine pt2 - proud to be a part of the fatherhood gang, and cool to experience the song again with a new perspective tangentially through you two doing this show as father and son. Thanks for the content.
Fun little fact
Steve Lacy helped produce Foldin Clothes
Cole can flow to any beat
Every time I listen to this album it gets better
the jazzy elements on this record feel like some of the modern Mountain Goats albums, like Dark in Here and the Jordan Lake stuff.
One of the greatest albums of all time
Every track plays into the narrative so even the songs that might not resonate tonally or structurally are important to the story. Immortal and Deja vu happen to be some of my favorites on here. They bring you into the mind of the subject.
This is my Cole fav album
It’s so smooth and gives you chills
I still need that 2016 Cole with features he is a top tier lyricist of all times 😊
yall really dont know how i screamed of happiness when i saw that yall were reacting to 4yeo, ive been waiting for the longest
This album changed my life. I’m so glad u got him to react to this❤️all love
This album is underrated and looked down upon when it should be looked up to and new artist should be studying this music. Have to KOD that’s another great album that brings his story telling to another level
love this album so much
one of my favorite records of all time. it had a ton of impact on me for some reason and I’ll always cherish it. loved the video
my favourite J Cole album. so beautifully crafted. LOVE
Definitely should show him the off season
100% that could just be my favorite album of his. The other albums have so sick songs aswell so irs hard to Pick. The off season is good track after good track though. I Think his next album could be his Best since it seems he has worked on it for a long time
I remember when I first heard this album I was in a place of contention and I felt like this album was reflecting parts of my life but also something Soo soothing and calming...then 4 your eyes only came on and I just drowned in tears for the longest.
Watched you guys review this and no matter how much times I hear that last song it gets the same reaction from me.
Great video as always! Really glad you both got to listen to it, one of my personal favorite records. I wrote a college paper on that last track being I was so deeply moved by it.
Beyond happy to see this album on here :) was really hoping for it. It’s everything I love about hip hop and Cole in particular
You guys should react to Care For Me by Saba. He’s super underrated but put out one of the best albums from that year
Him bringing up smino made me smile. Luv4Rent was a great album. i feel like that is a good album to get someone into smino
Neighbors is one of the funniest songs I ever heard, this man cole really wrote a song about his neighbors who thought he was a drug dealer.
Thank you for doing this album, it’s been my favorite album for years
I sometimes wish he played these albums in order to see the artist progression but still these video are classics… WE NEED BORN SINNER
Your dad seems to really like Dreamville, try Ari Lennox Shea Butter Baby album! I’d think he’d love to see this vibe with her vocals and instrumentals! Love this reaction glad you guys are feeling better!
One thing I love about your channel is how high quality the music is on my end. I don't know how but I swear the separation and the bass in particular sounds so much better on your channel than some others that occupy a similar space. The finishing track on this always blows my mind.
I love what you guys are doing! It’s great that Dad is not just a regular dad. He has a really good ear for music and he catches some things that I missed sonically.
you should do friday night lights or the warm up, Prime cole right there.
Gotta check out the youtube documentaries that Cole released before the album came out! Such a good insight to everything that y'all just listened to as well!
Returned to this album a month ago, this was great timing. Such a great list of songs.
You guys are great man. Pure authentic joy for all of these albums. Keep it up guys
A favourite J. Cole album, the storytelling and jazz elements work beautifully. You guys should definitely take a listen to James Blake’s Assume Form!
Love this channel. I think it would help your dad more if you gave him an explanation of the concept of albums before the listen. But I understand going into it with a blank slate is important also
Such a beautiful album, Change is my favourite rap song of all time!
Never would’ve though you guys would go back and do this one - such a low key favorite from Cole
This my favorite Cole album
Most conceptual Cole album imo executed well. Sadly not as loved as his old mixtapes or 2014 FHD.
I been begging for this for weeks, I’m so excited!!!
i knew your dad would love this album. this album absolutely blew my mind the first time i listened to it. goat album. thank you for doing this video!!
The timing of this this album is very important. The climate of the country at the time . Cole voice and the music reflect that . Great vulnerable album. I needed that as a black man .
By far my favorite album of all time 💯💯
For your own sake, listen to more albums.
Was able to see Cole live while he toured this album and hearing the last track the energy was unmatched.
appreciate you guys doing another cole album, was wondering if i’d see you guys listen to another one. can’t wait to see the rest
