Frank Ocean - channel ORANGE / channel-orange
open.spotify.com/album/392p3s...
Channel Orange (stylized as channel ORANGE) is the debut studio album by American R&B singer-songwriter Frank Ocean. It was released on July 10, 2012, by Def Jam Recordings. After releasing his mixtape Nostalgia, Ultra the previous year, Ocean began writing new songs with Malay, a producer and songwriter who then assisted him with recording Channel Orange at EastWest Studios in Hollywood. Rather than rely on samples as he had with his mixtape, Ocean wanted to approach sound and song structure differently on the album. Other producers who worked on the album included Om'Mas Keith and Pharrell Williams. Its recording also featured guest appearances from Odd Future rappers Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler, the Creator, vocalist/songwriter André 3000, and guitarist John Mayer.
Noted by writers as musically unconventional, Channel Orange draws on electro-funk, pop-soul, jazz-funk, and psychedelic styles, as well as nonmusical sounds such as film dialogue and ambient noise that function as interludes. Vocally, Ocean uses a free-form flow as well as alternating falsetto and tenor registers throughout the album. His songwriting explores themes of unrequited love, decadence, class, and drugs through the use of surrealistic imagery, conversational devices, and descriptive narratives depicting dark characters. He titled the album as a reference to the neurological phenomenon grapheme-color synesthesia, through which he had perceived the color orange during the summer he first fell in love.
To prevent Channel Orange from leaking onto the Internet, Ocean and Def Jam released the album digitally one week earlier than its publicly announced date. It was promoted with five singles, including Ocean's highest charting single "Thinkin Bout You" (number 32 on the US Billboard Hot 100) and a supporting concert tour in July 2012. Channel Orange debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 and sold 131,000 copies in its first week, eventually selling 621,000 copies in the US by September 2014. Critically, it was the best-reviewed album of 2012 and the year's top-ranked album in numerous critics' lists, including the American Pazz & Jop and the British HMV Poll of Polls. At the 2013 Grammy Awards, Channel Orange was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Urban Contemporary Album. Since then, it has featured in several professional lists ranking the best albums from the 2010s as well as all time.
I would pay $5,000 to hear Pyramids for the first time again
I have never heard a truer musical opinion, id pay an obscenely large amount to hear see you again by tyler for the first time again as well
I'm down to give you brain damage
@Romanome Frank Ocean..off this album..
pay me 5,000 and i will clear your memory

People dont understand this album is a certified classic. This album can not be replicated
Who doesn’t understand this yet? I’ll be shocked to hear anybody with a valid argument against.
Lol people have been saying this since it dropped dumbo
Best album of this generation.
@@dntgetflownover1673 ONE of the best albums of this generation for sure
@@dntgetflownover1673 I think this is his weakest album though, and that’s saying a lot bc it’s still amazing. The other two are just more amazing
I think bad religion always gets brushed over and it’s one of the best written songs in terms of sexuality and religion with the taxi being almost a confession box, honestly gets me everytime
FACTS!!
Yooooh I couldn’t agree with you more!
bad religion is SO GOOD
My favorite frank ocean song and people always think that’s weird haha
I listen to this at least once every month! His performance with the Roots and full string section on Jimmy Fallon is his best performance of this song imo.
the whole album has aged beautifuly, such a timeless sound.

yep
Playing Blonde to a Frank newbie is like turning on the vacuum in front of a newborn
relax blonde isn't really abrasive or thst experimental... great album but not exactly hard to listen to
@@justin9571 never said it was hard just a culture shock
it's different from his other stuff for sure
@@justin9571 Blonde is just such an experience. Even for someone who listens to all genres of music it'll be a surprise. There has never been anything like it before and there will never be anything like it after. A complete masterpiece. It will be a huge shift for anyone listening for the first time.
@@williamhummel2994 I totally agree with that but how is that anything like turning the vacuum on in front kf a newborn
dad is so right about how well pyramids aged. its still fresh today
I heard it for the first time around late 2019/early 2020, and it nearly instantly became my favourite song ever
I have probably listened to it every third day since it came out. My friends shat on it when I introduced them to the song many years ago and I haven’t fully forgiven their ignorant asses yet😉
The only skip on the album besides bad religion.
@@Jays-ug9bd ?
I'm not even a huge Frank fan but I think Pyramids is the best or one of the best songs of the 2010s
I swear, this album is one of the most pivotal albums of the 2010's.
@ such a weird and misguided way to think about this channal
@ wtf are you talking about
@ what a weird thing to say 😂
@ just admit you hate caucasians bro
@ Average Shawn Cee fan
Bad religion certified this album as a classic. Pilot Jones sets Frank apart from his peers. Pyramids makes it Frank’s magnum opus. Sweet life makes channel orange an avant garde cultural movement. Thinking bout you solidifies Frank Ocean as a legend.
blonde is by far his magnum opus
Pink matter always gives me goosebumps. WHAT A TRACK
I couldn't believe they cut out the transition from "pleasure over matter" into the beat drop. That moment gives me chills every time.
Pink Matter will forever be my favorite Frank Ocean song EVER
It’s literally his best song too me
@@blick9246 I agree! my all time favorite frank ocean song
the majin boo part allways gets me real emotional
was heavily surprised when Kevin called channel Orange trash midway through the review and instead began to play an hour rendition of Rockstar Made on an acoustic guitar. 10/10 review however.
Fantano comment section be like:
melon's comment section is invading every music reaction channel
Pls keep fantanos comment section out🙏
stop the fantano-nerd-led colonisation of music youtube
these comments are why I avoid fantano
Everyone is still trying to chase what Frank was doing a decade ago, and the only one that ever came close was Frank himself. So creative, so forward thinking, a true innovator
I’ve played Pyramids over 500 times since this album was released and it never gets old! Amazing album!!!!!
Kevin’s little giggle when Frank said “and I just ran outta Trojans” had me crying 😂
🤭
that line is the "i mean my balls sticking on my jeans" of channel orange
@@liluminati9791 lmao
Sorry if this is completely irrelevant, but some months back when you and your dad were going through Kanye I got hooked. Been following ever since, and Channel Orange is probably my most played album in 2011-2015, so this one means a lot. The thing is, you two have such a great relationship, it is foreign to me, because my father is a narcissist. Watching you two having fun and interacting made me accept what he is, and that he is incapable of ever having something like you two share, with anyone. I thank you for that, because it made me move on. Watching you guys jam out over Channel Orange is a beautiful way to mark the occasion. Rock on and cherish each-other! :)

Would’ve loved to hear you talk more about Pyramids - it’s suuuch an interesting track to try and decipher, full of interesting wordplay and references. Also, John Mayer played the amazing guitar solo at the end of the song, in case you didn’t know :)
thanks for doing this, though, hope you get to Nostalgia, Ultra as well, that would be fun as Kevin will obviously know some of the samples. Even hoping for Endless one day, which might be my favorite Frank album!
Liked for you being a Burial fan.
@@Krazy101ism Hell yeah, Burial is the man.
Patreon has uncut versions and they’re early, worth the 2.50 imo
@@ezrahaskard3527 yeah might be worth a shout.
I have really loved deciphering frank as well :) try the dissect podcast take on pyramids if you haven't already made me appreciate the song even more!
Wish I could go back in time and listen to this album for the first time again. Just a beautiful piece of art.
Also seeing faces up there is a tease. Can’t wait for that reaction.

The best Frank song.

pink matter and pyramids are two of the best songs ever made imo
whenever i watch your reviews, especially of iconic albums like this one, it always brings me back to the feeling of listening to the music for the first time, how excited I get when I hear the instruments, the lyrics, the stories come together. thanks for the awesome content.
Pink matter will always be my favorite. Amazing track
Andres verse is amazing.
Hitting hard today
unofficial remix with bigboi is really nice too

Drums on that whole album are amazing
100% that album is goated

YEA YUP MHM
Probably my faveoite album since it’s release! Would love to see y’all do it!
Please do this
Important context to this album, it coincided with Frank publicly coming out, so those last 3 songs are incredibly personal, particularly 'Bad Religion'.
Either way love these videos!
The story Frank tells in Pyramids is one of the best in recent music. Love that track.
17:48 oh my god I never would’ve thought he could hit a note that high lol
radiohead type thang
now we know he doesnt only have a "deep throat" 😎
If you guys want to dive a lot deeper into this album and Blonde, the Dissect podcast did a full season dissecting each track of both albums. It covers the music, production and especially the lyrical meaning of each track in a lot of depth. Frank usually has a deeper meaning and subject that he is getting at below the surface and that podcast does a great job of helping make sense. You'll somehow appreciate Frank way more than you did before listening to that
was there one for individual tracks of channel orange? i thought it was mostly just used as an intro to blonde

beyond happy ur dad liked and enjoyed earls verse off super rich kids, its the best features ive personally ever heard. it perfectly compliments the tone and subject matter that frank was providing. im not sure if youre much a fan of earl, but earl has some amazing projects and each project shows immense growth in earl as a person and artist
I have rewatched this video so many times. This is one of if not my favorite album ever and Sweet Life has a special place in my heart. Seeing Kev's reaction to it is just gold
thinking bout you, sierra leone, sweet life, super rich kids, crack rock, white, this album is full of bangers….
White isn’t on here

Lost? Bad Religion? Pink Matter? Forrest Gump?
@@colloquially all good music but not my favs, actually I do have lost on my playlists I forgot to mention that one

Haven’t seen them recommended but I think Kevin would love Beach House. Teen Dream and especially Bloom are fantastic albums
yeahhhh !
Bloom for sure
YES
Virgin bloom and teen dream vs Chad self titled and devotion
Yes they should also do 7! Drunk in LA and Black Car have to be some of the best songs ever created
It’s amazing how much these videos take me back to when I first heard the album. I first got into this album during the winter of 2017, and when I hear it, I’m suddenly back there. I can see the overcast weather outside, feel the cold weather, even the hum of the car that I was riding in when I listened to it for the first time. It’s brilliant. Thank you.
Super excited you guys did this one! and even more excited about the tranquility base hotel and casino shoutout. Such an amazing AM album which didn't nearly get the love it deserved. Can't wait for that ep
I fucking love this album
same
Connor *HIT* that falsetto note of my GOD! 🎙️
the reason i love frank is cus i know he’s just makin shit that he thinks is cool. he’s not writing verses that sound like every other rapper, cus we all know if frank wanted to he could rap. instead he’s singing and adding all of these cool effects and letting them speak for themselves and he’s doing it w some form of consistency, so it kinda ends up forming it’s own universe. he’s unique and no one has still to this day ever really done what he does on a large scale. all hail king ocean
i always love listening to monks. the drums feel like waves and whitewater crashing over me over and over again. its exactly like being in crazy swell or being in a moshpit
Performance of pyramids with John mayer on guitar on snl was amazing
For years I have held blonde up on this weird pedestal above all other frank ocean albums for some reason, even though there are a handful of tracks on that album that I skip. This reaction has completely changed my perspective. I've listened to channel orange countless times and this is the first time that I truly appreciated how brilliant it is
I honestly think blonde is more consistent than channel orange but frank was the odd future memeber who came into his sound the earliest by farrrrr
maybe partially bc he was older than everyone but
tbh, while i love this album, after listening to it a lot, i find myself skipping over a lot of the songs. blonde is just good, begining to end. i guess blonde is just more refined, frank was more mature as an artist on it.
@@DrCartof Well said. Though, Seigfried and Nights are all timers for me. I'm not sure that for me there were any personal all timers on Channel Orange besides Crack Rock and Pyramids. I like the ones off Blonde more than CO.
I love both albums a lot. I don't feel the need to rank one over the other, they are both brilliant works of music that I like for different reasons.
i think blonde may be more concise and “better”, but i listen to channel orange far more overall. i have to be in a mood to listen to more songs on blonde.
I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
Dude I really appreciate your dad! He gets it...Channel Orange is for mental health. A breather in my playlist! Musically a source of inspiration always.
I love how you guys close the videos. After listening to some good music and paying attention to what you both comment, it feels like we are there with you. I always feel so chill and peaceful after the ending of the videos.
It might sound stupid, but after some months watching your content I feel like you have been part of my day-to-day. Thank you guys so much. I send you love from Spain ❤
I think Dad will love nostalgia/ULTRA; I'd love to see his reaction to the sampling and if he loves Frank singing, he just goes way harder on that album too
I was just about to say this. The album is in my top 10 fave albums.
I third that motion, react to NostalgiaULTRA
uploading that reaction is just hard cause the copyright is SO strict, very likely to get muted
Swim Good is so Fucking good.
@@mmoura19: I just want to see his reactions to it, I can listen to the album myself. Actually, scratch that, I just want him to have heard it.
If you guys want another album from 2012 that influenced a new generation of artists & hasn't aged a day then Lana's Born to Die is the one. The combo of triphop and baroque pop is 10/10.

pink matter is one of the most gorgeous songs ever- musically, lyrically, in every aspect
Love the video guys! always great to see you further expanding each other’s music knowledge
I love this album. It's so consistent especially the lyrics and production. Also, it has so many classics (Pink Matter, Thinkin Bout You, SRK, Pyramids, Bad Religion). Also underrated songs (Pilot Jones and Monks). Frank a fucking goat one of the greatest artists and albums of this generation. Pls make more music Frank I need it 😫.
Lost also a classic!!
bro u forgot sweet life, arguably the best song of the album.
basically the whole album is a classic😂
And it's probably his worst album 🤣
@@BanakaiGames it depends from person to person's personal preferences. Personally, I think this is the best album from Frank because it has the best replay value for me but yeah, all of his albums are not far from one another because all of them are good.
I've been WAITING for this video!
pink matter and super rich kids are absolutely golden
Great reaction and a wonderful album. I'm loving the selection that two review!
Very much appreciated.
such a different take from your dad to think that blond was unfamiliar, I feel like its packed with some of the most nostalgia an albums ever carried. I'm sure it might be the age difference between him and I, but its honestly cool that he's still open to go back for another listen.
i've been waiting for this one! This is a top 4 all-time album for me and I have a framed waveform poster of all the tracks in my living room. Crack rock is my favorite song.
Such a wonderful album, great video guys!
I’ve been waiting for this
I don’t think Kevin fantasizing sleeping with Kanye west for 43 minutes and 17 seconds counts as a reaction…
god i love this album and i’m so glad your dad enjoyed it, so many tracks on here have aged so well. i can’t wait to see what you guys review next, praying for more mac miller, especially faces :,)
Been waiting for this one!! 🧡
i cannot tell you how happy i am you’ve done this album
I feel you Papa Tables: I finished my first track last year that I was satisfied with after almost a decade of making music. And guess what? An incredible day, I was buzzing - but then finishing tracks became the norm, and the next challenge arose: finishing a song that was better than the first one. Truly a never-ending process, so, in the end... just finish a track, get that fucking dopamine rush, and keep fucking moving!

Wow Class of 2012! I had just graduated from high school and shortly after, this album dropped mid summer. Damn, brings back such great memories with my classmates playing this album in heavy rotation before we all went our separate ways. Listening to Channel Orange, always brings me a huge feeling of adolescence and coming of age. My overall favorite track was “Sweet Life” and I always thought “Monks” was the deep cut imo, since a lot of my peers tend to overlook it…lol. Nonetheless another great review! Thanks for taking me back down memory lane.

Amazing video for another amazing album again! Love it, you guys don’t miss!
Btw, I’m glad you brought Arctic Monkeys’ Tranquility Base and Casino, great album also imo, it would be great to see Kevin react to it, I think he would really like it
Pink matter is my favorite song of his ever, the transition when it goes “pleasure over matter” is just INSIAN. I cried listening to it for the first time and sometimes still do, I litterly can’t not even explain how beautiful that song is, Frank is litterly just the most beautiful artist and it just ugh I can’t I need to go to bed
This series is the best! Listened to Blonde, Channel Orange, & Endless probably 50x times each, so this was a happy 43 min of my life. I think it'd be awesome if you guys did a dad reacts to John Mayers where the light is album. Such an underrated live album. Also Daniel Caesar Freudian :)
