I love buttermilk pie. It reminds me of cheese cake. I had no idea that buttermilk and chess pie were the same. That is fantastic. Thank you for posting this. You make it look easy to make. I want to try to make this.
This is an interesting format. I guess I haven't dug too deep into the back catalog. Looks great!
Lynchburg is in a dry county and Ms. Bobo did not use alcohol of any kind in her recipes. Now that Jack Daniels owns the restaurant they have added their products to some of her recipes. You may have noticed in your visit all the Jack Daniels logo products, sold everywhere, but any bottles are empty.
Orange zest and juice would be good also. My vanilla was made in whiskey. I used to put orange zest in my flan...
I never heard of Chess Pie before, but Buttermilk Pie is one of my favorites. There is a restaurant I use to eat at close to 40 years ago that served the most delicious Buttermilk Pie. They always served it with a slice of lime and to this day I can see it clearly it was so good. Thanks!
Two extremely closely related pies - I think the addition of Corn meal makes it 'chess pie', though no-one knows the origin of the name... lots of theories, and all of them believable. In the end, it tastes great!
Fabulous, thanks!
My favorite name origin is that the hostess of that month's women's luncheon would bake one of these pies with a chess piece in it. The lady who got the slice with the chess piece would host the next luncheon. And they came to be called chess pies. :-)@GlenAndFriendsCooking
Just say, " happy cooking!" It's so on! Never heard of this pie before but....like always - thanks for bringing new and amazing to the table!
I can't wait to try some of your recipes love your enthusiasm and passion ! 😉😋👍
God bless the south!
One thing always crosses my mind while watching your cooking videos. How do you two not balloon out from eating all that food?
thank u for putting the ingredients in the description box
@ILuvFood - No problem! We try to do that for all of our videos, though it may be missing from some of the early ones back in 2007 - 2009... Nothing worse than having to click through to someones blog, and having to search while being bombarded by popup ads.
Can see that the video style has evolved significantly from this one
Hello it looks good.
Chess Pie is a southern dish and when asked what kind of pie it was the answer with a southern accent - Just pie became - Jus Pie - to Chess Pie
Except it isn't a 'Southern Pie' it's an English pie; and while the story you told is cute and has that old downhome folksy charm... It's totally false, but it's been told so many times people take it as truth.
'Chess Pie' is a Northern cookbook (New York) misspelling of an English 'Cheese Pie' that can be found in English cookbooks going back to the 1500s. Same ingredients, same pie; just a misspelling of the word Cheese. In Southern US cookbooks into the late 1800s BOTH spellings are seen in various cookbooks and sometimes in the same cookbook.
The 'Cheese' in English Cheese Pie has nothing to do with / doesn't contain any Cheese; it's a reference to how the ingredients curdle like cheese does when you make it.
@@GlenAndFriendsCooking regardless of the origin, it's still a staple of the southern u.s. and a holiday treat. from what i've read of the meaning butter tarts have to the holidays in canada, i'd say the same hold true to both a buttermilk pie or chess pie.
I love chess pie, glad to see you doing it.
Thanks!
a friend of mine made me a chess pie a long time ago. it sure was good!
Please save me one piece of pie..😍👍
Omg this looks so good!
Thanks!
That is a lemon chest pie! Looks good . Would be even better without the cornmeal
I wonder if they can make butterscotch meringue pie
I cannot find the recipe and also wondered if you can use cornbread mix as corn flour ?
The recipe is on screen and in the description box - sorry that you couldn't find it.
The recipe calls for corn meal, which is not interchangeable with cornbread mix.
I had one today and it reminded me of a pineapple upside down cake so I want experiment with pineapple juice.😛
Why is this one so much darker than the original recipe?
This recipe looks so easy and delicious! Nice production, as always, too. I wasn’t crazy about the music at first-initially the vocalist bleated goatishly, but after she settled down, it was okay.
I have OCD. Nothing SUPER life altering for me, as with many mental disorders, there are varying degrees. But, it looked like she didn't cut from center... And that is driving me nuts. (Additionally, I don't think I would've served such GIGANTIC portions, and I am American (USA)!!! NOT ALL OF US ARE OBESE GLUTTONOUS SLOBS, but most are, I get it)
I am, however, very opinionated and come off as rude from time to time- but I think that's more a Michigan thing lol.
I'm not saying "fix it"... I'm just airing my grievances. Lol love the channel regardless.
Isn’t being that critical exhausting?
That was totally UN-necessary
