Mike is the most authentic guitar teacher on UA-cam if you ask me. His course truly supports the beginner with the basics and exercises to practice before moving on to the next lesson.
Blues You Can Use First off, I have memorized the first 4 exercises [ songs ] just to have something to play for warm up and others have recorded them to youtube. Author covers the minor and major blues blocks and pentatonic tree scales. Good explanation and examples of blues chords. There is a lot of music in this book and will take some time to work your way thorough it. Helps if your timing is good. Author also follow up - More Blues You Can Use. Continues where 1st book ends. And this book is a definite skill builder. One book worth mentioning is the Fretboard Road Maps Books. Beginners, General, Rock, Blues ..... a great source of fundamental guitar knowledge.
I appreciate you sharing this list. I’ve been working through the Hal Leonard Guitar Method books and have noticed that, while many teachers say you can use them without a teacher, you really can’t. There isn’t enough info in the books alone to get you over the humps and plateaus. So I’m looking for supplements. One thing I want to share is that I’m coming to guitar from piano and what I see is that the world of guitar instruction is much more disorganized and chaotic than piano. With piano, you learn body posture, finger technique, sight-reading, and music theory. You begin to explore diverse genres with the instrument. With guitar, students are immediately faced with choices of styles and genres, all sorts of diverse strumming or picking or tapping techniques. Materials are seldom clear on whether they are focused on acoustic or electric. Sight-reading is an all-but-abandoned afterthought. Even new students are distracted with gear selection and tones. Memorizing the fretboard is often not emphasized as foundational. All of this seems to be to keep students interested in the instrument. There are hundreds of books available and they all seem to say something different. Seems like a lot of disorganized chaos while in the back, some folks are making a lot of money off it. For anyone who has studied both piano and guitar, they’ll see the difference I’m talking about. Piano seems more calm and organized in regard to the education of it. Guitar seems more chaotic.
this is so true after playing piano for about a year im learning guitar also and got my guitar almost 3 months ago now. i decently play about 2 seconds of a bunch of different songs but haven't started learning anything in full yet. it feels alot harder to find where to start when learning guitar because every resource says almost completely different things but with piano it starts simple and the same with pretty much every resource/teacher
Troy Stetina's books were the ones that advanced my playing the most and the fastest. I noticed considerable improvement in single sessions. Even after playing for 5 years.
Me too man. His Metal Lead/Rhythm series is the best series of books I ever learnt from, although the Blues You Can Use series is just about as good and very effective!

Mike. I bought two of your recommended books. One of the books has already arrived. I'm excited and eager to practice every day what the book teaches you and to master each lesson. So I'm still in page 4 on day 5, because I don't want to go on to the other lesson without mastering the lesson I'm working on!!!
I do a lot of Classical works. Because of this I've used "Ricardo Iznaola: Kitharologus The Path to Virtuosity" a lot Ricardo Inzaola was my guitar instructor's instructor. Really pushes your limits on what you can do with fingers! And will greatly improve your guitar techniques Another is his book on practicing (definitely recommend) Lastly, his book on Left Hand Technique: Limits to the Impossible takes a physiological approach to playing guitar

Hal Leonard has the best books really helped me understand music. I'm still a beginner but I feel so much more confident in learning. The best beginner books out there for newbies.
And not only newbies, I bought like 5 books from them in last couple months, love it, so nice to have all that good stuff squeezed in one place. Check out "Guitar Aerobics", you won't be disappointed.

Here is a little(not so much) story and how you affected in my way. Ive always liked rock , garage revival and alternative. For years my favorite band was The Killers. But when i got more into rock I noticed how they were starting to distance from the real rock sound, they were starting to create this pop-rock sound. So I started to look for other bands. I found the strokes and fell in love with music again. Then Interpol, and man, i just had this feeling, i loved their music so much that i felt like I needed to do something else. Then i got my guitar. I find out that a lot of songs from the first couple albums of the strokes are “easy” to play. I remember I was so excited when I played the chorus for meet me in the bathroom. If I was in love with music before, now i was ready to engage. Im pretty much a tab kid rn. I play the guitar because I like creating sounds. If someone asks me , ill tell them i don’t know how to properly play guitar. I haven’t even bothered learning any chords. Its just that music rn is a getaway from school and stress and all that stuff. I don’t want to ruin it, I don’t want to feel like im in school again with something that I enjoy. Thats why I haven’t learned any theory. I remember I said a month ago “I will never learn theory because I will never want to”. The more I get into my guitar the more curious I am. Im starting to find patterns in a lot of tabs. Ive watched a lot of your videos from exercises to personal experiences to motivational stuff etc. The idea of learning Theory is starting to grow on me. After watching this video, it grew even more! I might as well grab my first book. Its just that if Im going to do it , I want to do it because Im genuinely interested. And that might be the case now. Thanks for sharing. 🎵♥️
One of my faves is Frederick Noad's 'Idiots Guide To The Guitar.' I just picked up the 20,000 Chord Wheel book. That's 19,990 more chords than what I currently know. :-)

Troy Stetina is such a great teacher, I learned a lot from his books and I find his teaching style has the best learning curve For me it has the perfect balance between learning new things while keeping it challenging and exciting. And you are pronouncing grimoire perfectly, by the way.

Of those books one that shoul d be in every guitar players books is beginning fingerstyle blues guitar , it s.the perfect.book instead of just jumping into some robert johnson or Charlie Patton i mean those bools wi l make u wanna just smash your guitar.but this takes you through getting your thumb and fingers as.their own entities learning turnarounds and really c ool vamps and.it.just makes.you wanna perfect it , throughout the book you have short pieces ag aim with cool.fimgerpick ing out of chords like John Burt then 5 songs at the end to.go over.and it's just a perfect book to.start your blues journey them move on to woody mann stuff ,1st robert johnson song I learned was from 4 until.late yeah maybe one of his easiest but damn felt.good playing johnson.them followed Charlie Patton slappin.the guitar on the in between neat anyway one of my favorite.books I'll still p luck a.few.vamps.in there when warmin.up.but get it

Don't know why It s always less considered. I have #1 (awsome) #2 (not bad but it'a scale book more or less, and lacks pentatonics. #3 completes arpeggios and positions.
Aye, don't knock Reading Rainbow! I used to cut school just to watch it. ;-P. What about books for drums? Someone recommended a paradiddle book (I don't recall the title of it). The book starts off in the first section with simple two limb paradiddles, each exercise becoming more difficult. Section 2 follows the same recipe but includes a third limb. Section 3 adds a fourth limb.

It's amazing know that you've been showing them the crappy tab books out there ..One my first tab books was iron maiden which you've did video on ..That has be worst ever ....chords are played wrong ..everything is wrong ..and to solo they give you first Pentatonic shape ..yeah that's gonna help me play complicated maiden solos lol ..what a waste ....anyways ..I've noticed newer versions are getting better and as you said in a video you can find mostly everything on the internet ..but that book really just messed me up ...There's not one song I learned from it and it would be wrong anyway ...keep rocking mike 👍👍👍

It's amazing know that you've been showing them the crappy tab books out there ..One my first tab books was iron maiden which you've did video on ..That has be worst ever ....chords are played wrong ..everything is wrong ..and to solo they give you first Pentatonic shape ..yeah that's gonna help me play complicated maiden solos lol ..what a waste ....anyways ..I've noticed newer versions are getting better and as you said in a video you can find mostly everything on the internet ..but that book really just messed me up ...There's not one song I learned from it and it would be wrong anyway ...keep rocking mike 👍👍👍

Have you ever tried - Riddleagan Skillful Playing Remedy (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great one off guide for learning complex guitar chords and become a pro without the headache. Ive heard some great things about it and my friend Sam at last got great success with it.

It is an awesome one of a kind product for learning complex guitar chords and become a pro minus the hard work.
