This is a tribute song to Elvis. His picture was painted on black velvet alot and sold mostly on street corners. The music is a blend like the blends Elvis sang.
In interviews at the time, (I am that old) Alannah said it referenced Elvis's first ever TV appearance. It was at a County Fair & he wore a black velvet shirt. He was still dirty blonde then too. He start dyeing his hair darker, not long after. It's on YT if you want to look for it.
Black Velvet was also the name of the shade Elvis used to dye his hair. “Later in his life, Elvis opted in for a signature mix of hair dyes: Miss Clairol 51D and Black Velvet / Mink Brown by Paramount. Due to this, every single photo you will see of him features super-dark black hair.”
This song is a tribute / nod to Elvis Presley. During a specific time period Elvis’s portrait was painted on black velvet. There are easily recognizable refers such as Love Me Tender and others. Love this song.
Mississippi delta sunset. This is all about Elvis/ Not velvet paintings or hair color. It's about the man and his voice. And how people still adore him.
My mom had a huge picture of Elvis pained on black velvet. Those were being sold a lot in the 80's I believe. It was a striking picture. You felt it to your soul when you looked in his eyes. I would swear those paintings were possessed by Elvis himself LOL. I'm not the first one to notice that about those pictures I've always loved this song. I don't know if she did much after this tho. Her voice is fantastic
People keep saying this tribute to Elvis Is referring to the black velvet paintings that were popular for a while. Every word is about Elvis but both Alannah and the songwriter have said the title is NOT about those kitschy paintings. It's about Elvis's overall mystique, his voice, his impact on the world etc. I saw Alannah sing this live, while the song was a hit, when she opened for Robert Plant on his 1989 solo tour. She sounded great.💙💫
I don't believe you that she said it was not inspired by the Black Velvet paintings of Elvis. you are obviously too young to know how the Black Velvet portraits of Elvis was so popular and sold everywhere through the late 70s and early eighties. furnish a link to an interview where she said it wasn't. if you can't do furnish a link then you're just talking out your Bu,,,,
At the time, (i'm that old) Alannah stated it references Elvis's first ever TV appearance. It was at a County Fair & he wore a black velvet shirt. Its on You Tube. He was still dirty blonde back then. He started dyeing his hair darker not long after that.
Unless you around after Elvis died no one will know that the Black Velvet is Elvis. After he died his picture was painted on black velvet canvas and sold on street corners everywhere! I used to have one but it was badly damaged in a move. It sounds country, rock and blues because that was Elvis's style. Alana Myles nailed it! Have you listened to Walking In Memphis yet. By Marc Cohn? If not, you should check it out.
This was my song when I lived on a small island in the Mediterranean. The outside bar and dance area and an indoor cave finished smoothly with comffy seating for a break if needed was carved out of a cave on the side of a valley filled with bamboo. Gleaming stars. I was a regular there. Every knew everyone. When the DJ saw me he played this song for me every time. Boy do I miss it. Back in 1989! Great song, thanks for the memories, x When the DJ saw me enter this song was played for me and I danced to it slowly. I'll never forget you "La Grotta". Some of my greatest meemories
Paintings on black velvet extended beyond Elvis in the 70s, but he was probably the most popular subject. It was a thing when I was in college to decorate a room with several black velvet posters or pictures, put a blackout curtain over the window, and turn on a black-light lamp and watch the pictures come alive.
Rock was born when Memphis and Mississippi mixed with Nashville...when country met soul.. basically when we all came together black, white n brown we made beautiful things like this
The black velvet thing was very popular in the late 60s and 70s. There were painting-by-number kits that you got to paint of Elvis and other things. The Elvis paintings were everywhere. My mom and folks her age were really into that. I even did a couple myself. Great song!!
I had her CD where this song was sung. My favourit though was and still is "Love is", but this one the more i have listened to it its a really special song. Playing it now with my bandmembers.Timeless.
""Love me tender" leaves them crying in the isles'. "Mama's baby is in the heart of every school girl". "A new religion that will bring you to your knees. . ." "Down in Memphis, the music's like a heat wave." "In a flash he was gone. . . it happened so soon. What could you do?" "Black velvet with that little boy's smile. Black velvet with that slow, southern style." The song is a tribute to Elvis. Many paintings of him were done on black velvet.
This fitting tribute to the King of Music deftly employs Elvis’ blend of blues, gospel, and country, while the moving lyrics pay homage to him, too. Elvis is always the benchmark.
one of Canada's best exports!!! Alannah was really big, world wide; then she became ill and oh my, so sad how. She's still around here (Toronto) and does perform sometimes
I would have been 24-25 yrs old when this song came out...still in college. I was immediately smitten and went out and bought the album on cd; and then she disappeared. I loved the whole album and always wondered what happened to her.
Elivs portraits were often sold after his passing and were painted on a black velvet canvas often…that has always been my interpretation….this song is about Elvis.
This is the best video of her and this song, thank you for doing this one. ♥I love it and always look forward to watching with reactors. I was 40 years old the first time I heart this. I did once have a portrait of Elvis, my friend gave it to me when she married my brother! She didn't want to have it in the house for him to see it LOL I have forgotten where I put it. :( It wasn't painted on black velvet though, oh well. Stuff happens to things over the years. I'm 74 now and I was a huge Elvis fan, pretty much everyone was a fan of him.
Correct that the song is an homage to Elvis. Interestingly, black velvet is also the material used to make black armbands that mourners wear in the UK.
I heard this song while driving around in my home State of Alaska when I was 16. I knew nothing about music but found the song haunting and warm. I at some point decided I was going to college in the South because of this song. Thank God I did not . I ended up in Idaho and that State boarders Canada and that place was to hot for my Alaska blood.
This song was a tribute to my friend Elvis black velvet paintings of him which i have a lot of black velvet dye to keep that sexy black hair sexy and black velvet whiskey.
The "black" music that was being sung by Elvis who brought that "underground sound" to the surface of white America in the mid fifties. What we know today as rock 'n' roll also having sexual connotations. Much more raw than 40's romantic swing, our parents had a fit! It was like being naughty without the drugs and alcohol. Black Velvet, if you please.
Allanah Myles was the bomb. Unfortunately, after too many visits to the chiropractor, she wound up with serious back problems that made her bed-ridden for well over a year I think which seriously screwed with the momentum of her career. She made a comeback though and is a Canadian treasure although she's never made it to the American top forty again which is really too bad.
Sadly this was really her only song. Though she won a Grammy for it, the record company took everything, leaving her in debt, and basically made it so she was never able ti record again
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦 This song was about Black Velvet means Elvis Presley, the new religion, 👍🏻 May I suggest another great song by The Zac Brown Band Live from Austin City Limits Song is 🎶 FREE/INTO THE MYSTIC 🎶🎵 Keep the good work my friend ✌️ 👏 🙌 💪🏻 👍🏻

I remember that!! My dad had on in the seventies hanging on the wall. Black velvet with. Elvis, thanks for the mkries!
My favorite ode to Elvis. Love this song. Love how she describes Elvis and how he hit without using his name.
Black Velvet was also the name of the shade Elvis used to dye his hair.

Was pregnant in 89 and loved this - it was a stress reliever, please believe me!

Alannan is one of our amazing Canadian pop/rock singers. My personal fave from her is called Who Loves You. Would love to hear a reaction to it :)
This was also played on the country charts, a little country, blues and rock with some gospel vibes every kind of music Elvis sang and performed

She has a wonderful texture to her voice.
A new religion that will bring you to your knees, Elvis Love Me Tender leaves em crying in the aisle. Elvis was painted on black velvet.

The black velvet symbolizes Elvis Presley's voice .... it was smooth as velvet!
Southern style, black people - black velvet. Elivis was the only one who sang african american gospel music.
Amen. Thats who he ran with, the poor area he grew up in.

Jimmy Rodgers mentioned in the first verse is a nod to the Father of country music .

I remember a lot of horses, lions and tigers painted on black velvet ☮️
And lava lights
In 2010 I lived in a tent. I drew all over the inside walls with highlighters. When I turned ony blacklight the whole room lit up like neon lights 😅
I saw Alana Myles live on New Years Eve, she was amazing live ❤
She won a Grammy, two MTV awards, and a Juno award for this song

Black velvet= The Big 'E'!!!
Great reaction! Thanks for keeping great music alive!
That was probably one of the biggest songs that year, and she never really had another. But her voice is so smooth, so that's a shame.
I remember it playing on the radio all the time for a while there☮️

She is singing about Elvis Pressly, back in the 80's it was popular to paint on black velvet
Sounds like a country blue rock song…perfect description!
She asked Mavis Staples to tour with her.
I may only heard her 3xs in life and I was in rock and metal years ago, didn't know her much but makes sense now. 💗
Love these takes on a song, but seriously some people must be living under a rock to have never heard this singer/song 💜
Gotta listen to her "Still got this thing for you" one of her harder driving rock songs !!!
Elvis was Country, Rock and Blues all in one 🌹
Listen to the lyrics again, knowing it's a song about Elvis.

She looks in great shape I wonder how she developed such severe back problems!
Ive wondered about Alannah Miles bc she's Canadian and so am I. I think she did music after but nothing that hit like this one.
Sadly this was really her only song. Though she won a Grammy for it, the record company took everything, leaving her in debt, and basically made it so she was never able ti record again
