Thanks for the help, I just replaced my gasket using this video. Tip: if you take the wheels off, it's actually really easy to line up the bolts on the backing plate, and you don't need a friend's help. As you slide the axle in, the splines on it will make contact with the diff about 3/8" before the bolts go into the ends of the diff housing. So after the axle splines mate with the diff, you can still spin the backing plate into position to mate up the bolts with their holes.
I'm going to try and do this on my Hiace, I thought I had to take the propeller shaft out but this video shows that it's way easier than that. I reckon I've got no gear oil left inside mine. I watched a crazy russian guy run an old sedan dry with one wheel blocked and one off the ground and it took a beating before it welded itself together. Hopefully not too much damage inside. Thanks for the video
I just had a rear differential bearing and seal kit - Toyota 8" installed on my 1987 Toyota 1T PU and it spews gear oil out the differential vent. Before this work was done the mechanic found that the differential vent was clogged and unclogged it. Any idea why it is spewing gear oil. A year earlier I had new rear wheel bearings and seals installed. I don't know if it matters but on the way home from the differential bearing and seal kit work the inner wheel bearing on the passenger side failed. After they replaced the inner and outer bearings and the seal I found that it still spews gear oil out of the differential vent.
@@TRAV30387 yeah true, might just flush it out... reckon i could use diesel to flush? then fill with cheap oil, do a couple hundred Km's then empty and fill with good oil? also is your diff LSD from factory? mine is a 2002 kzn165r sr5, doesnt matter for flushing but just wondering and if yours is lsd what do you think of its locking ability? i have mechanical front lokka and am considering locking the rear aswell
@@TRAV30387 havent checked yet but i reckon, fresh/muddy deep puddles up to the sidesteps, maybe a touch over, no diff wine or issues but considering checking n flushing just to be safe
@@TRAV30387 thanks. I have a 1994 surf. And the hand break is different. It doesn’t have the clips like the ones showed in your video. Do I keep it attached or is there another way to remove them.
Cheers for the vid bro! 🤙 Just a quick question when dropping the tail shaft , can you you just bolt it up again ? Or does it have to line back up the way it come off.
2:40. No your breather isn't blocked. It's a one-way valve. When you block the filler plug it creates a vacuum. So of course no air can enter the breather. Think about it.
Fantastic video- I particularly like that you did not edit out everything. I’ll be prepared to do this going forward.

Cheers mate its not a hard job i just wanted to make it simple.
Trav, exactly what I needed! Thanks mate and greetings from Brisbane!

Excellent demonstration,I needed to do that ,The mechanic charge 900 $ , I think I'll do it my self now 👍.
Its prety basic mate hope the vid helps
Cheers for this Trev, I've been thinkin of opening my diff to inspect and replace oil cos I went through a few water holes (no breathers)
No worries you can drop the oil that should be enough flush it a fuew times

Hey yer mines an lsd id just fill it with oil and do repeat flushes till its clean have you had water go inside the diff?

Good idea remember oils cheep mechanical parts aren't
Cheers for the video. I’ve got to do the same job on a Prado.
What can you use if you don’t have the special break line clamp? Vice grips?
You can just dont do them up to tight or just go to youre local auto shop and grab a cheep set

Good video. Would be helpful for some people to show you putting the driveshaft back on to the diff.
drop centre bearing bolts line up the tail shaft with the diff than lift centre back up
The tunes are cranking too👍👌🇦🇺
Do you know if that differential is LSD type?
I have e question for 2009 Toyota tacoma 4x4 is the same?
Id imagine it would b verry similar
Cheers for the vid bro! 🤙

Eazy mate cheers just put it back up no lining requirements
Great diy job mate
Du you remove yes one axel driver side my friend?
Removed both
Nice Job my friend🤜🤛
On the 2016 hilux the breather is closed by a tiny spring and a rubber disc, so mostly closed.
What kind of the truck is that ❤
Toyota hilux mate

Hey mate, what year is your Hilux? Would this be the same process for a 2011 KUN26? Thanks mate!
Its a 2000 model and yes basically the same principle
Did this leak without the gasket goo? I did this shit 3 times and had clean as surfaces. Man i was annoyed
It leaked with the gasket but its fine now. I bet it did
The breather closes under suction, and opens to relieve pressure.
Yes
$5.00? $18 to $40 here in NZ
Good practice to change axle seals at the time to avoid leaks there mate.
Definitely if i had them at the time i would have changed them
Oyster 🤣
Hahaha
