I just had a rear differential bearing and seal kit - Toyota 8" installed on my 1987 Toyota 1T PU and it spews gear oil out the differential vent. Before this work was done the mechanic found that the differential vent was clogged and unclogged it. Any idea why it is spewing gear oil. A year earlier I had new rear wheel bearings and seals installed. I don't know if it matters but on the way home from the differential bearing and seal kit work the inner wheel bearing on the passenger side failed. After they replaced the inner and outer bearings and the seal I found that it still spews gear oil out of the differential vent.
Rear is easy. On FJ80 (e.g. 1994 Land Cruiser), front requires pulling the drums, brakes, etc: the drive shafts consist of two parts, a KNUCKLE, which requires more parts to pull off front knuckle assembly.
You just mark the driveshaft and diff flange so that it goes on the same way. If you are putting a new diff in there is no need to balance or mark the drive shaft.
Do I have to remove the rear axles all the way out or could I just take them out half way. Reason I ask is because I have limited space on both sides of 80 and it's raining all week so I cant do it outside
Hello, nice job very instructive! I hv an fzj80 land cruiser 1996 with cen diff lockers, and im having a bad rear differential now cuz i changed the diff oil and the diff began to jam on high speeds so i am wondering from where did u bought that rear differential? online ? And how much did it costs u? Thanks
@@howtonick2803 Ive got Suzuki GrandVitara 2003,but there`s no axle hubs its just the drum brakes.Does this mean that i have to completly remove the drum brakes to be able to reach the axle hubs?
@@skokomurliak I think you will have To seperate the axle and hub from the diff housing and then remove the wheel bearing and axle from the hub to be able to get the wheel studs out.
My advice is to grease the wheel bearings with marine grease and not high temp grease as high temp grease desolves in salt water and it would be impossible to take the diff apart!
I've found for live rear axles it doesn't matter because the halfshafts are encased by the caps on the end of the halfshafts and the housing itself. In other words, if the diff gets as bad as you imply, you will have had to ignore an oil leak so bad it would have turned your diff into a violent puzzle long before 3rd member & halfshaft disassembly ever becomes an issue.
Hi, how do you go about balancing the drive shaft afterwards? Any marking will be gone as its a total replacement. Thanks
I've done a few on land rovers , when you pull out that diff it weighs a lot so be ready for it . Great video . Thanks
Great work …would you know if all makes of locker have the same seals ..or how can I tell what mine are ..thankyou
Very useful - cheers. Nice place to live with the sound of birds and electric guitars 🙂

Hi the 98 Toyota Tacoma 2wheel drive is the same my diff when bad end I need to replace it thanks.
Good job. Where did you find the differential, source.
Great video(s), you make it look simple and good editing as well
Good video mate. Today’s job, change rear center!
Its always fun playing with diffs! Try not to crush any fingers haha!
Is it right to remove axcol without jack..?
Please advise: how can i use only one side/wheel and stop the other side from spinning (i'm building a rotavator and i only need one side to spin)
Do you need to balance the drive shaft afterwards? And if so how? Thanks

My diff needs to be replaced. FZJ 80 non locked. Can I put diff with locker instead?
@user-kn2gc2my6g sure, as long as the diff is the same ratio.
Great video mate, when I remove the floating axels will I have to replace a seal or gasket?
@@norsephilosophy it is a good idea to replace the gaskets.
Hi. I do have a 2006 land cruiser FZJ 100 series. with LSD rear diff. Want to see the replacement of this diff.😎
Should be exactly the same.

You only need to pull the axles out about 20-30cm untill they are out of the diff :)
@@howtonick2803 do you have to remove the whole axle just to take a look inside to see what the deal is

Hey Nic great video thanks for sharing. You have inspired me to have a crack at this myself. Do you have a parts/gasket and tool list for this job?
If there's also a factory locker present on the diff, should the process be any different?
is the front and rear gaskets on the cover the same as the side you are changing?
Great video. Thanks for sharing. and subscribed!
What silicone did you use?

I bought it of a wrecker, it was 1000 Australian Dollars with the ARB airlocker already installed :D
@أبو داحم rear diff would take LS90 and Front diff would take 80w90. Cheers
How long does it take to do ?
can u remove the diff center body without pulling the left and the right axles out?
No you can't, the axles lock into the diff centre and would stop it being removed.

Just wondering, you have to pull rear axles out right in order to be able to get the diferencial out?
Yep that's correct : )
Nic, what size bolts did you use to remove axels?
Levi M i think they are m8x1.25 or 1.5 by about 4cm in length. Cheers!
HowToNick Thanks Mate, Cheers...
I'd assume the job would be fairly identical on a land rover defender, thanks for the vid.
yep it would be very similar!
Did you put new seals in the locker?
Yep sure did! :D
Thank, s👌👌👌👑
Where do I get the hub gaskets????
Do you have one for a 90 series Landcruiser such as the Prado?
The process should be very similar for the rear diff of the prado as its solid axle but the front diff would be slightly different. Cheers!
Managed to take one off a 185 surf, only took me a full day to do it all! Big job.
