Instead of welding that diff, assuming this is to be a street truck, I would put a Truetrac limited slip in there. That's what I did to my '92 and it's awesome.

Austin, trust me, watching your videos is one of the best moments of the day.
I would like to congratulate you on your perfect job and edition of your videos.
I have a channel where I restore old toys (Nylint trucks from the 60s) and I know how complicated is to filming without forgetting the key moments which make all difference. One more time, thanks for sharing, your job is awesome!

Great job Austin, others may take notice. This is a great example of concise tutorial within a great shop environment without a lot of gibber jabber. Very thorough and above and beyond normal rebuild. I was just looking for a good representation of disassembly/assembly order for this subject of rear axle teardown and reassembly. As I am in process now on stepsons' 87 toyota pickup rear axle bearing and seals replacement. I am 40 year Aircraft tech, car and motorcycle enthusiast, mechanic.

So glad I found this chanel recently. Started with the transformation vids of the green and red truck and was amazed by his skill, and now i've watched every episode of this new build. Love chanels like this where you can actually learn, and be inspired to take on projects on our own trucks.

I put bearing kits in and replace that crush collar before and that parts not bad. It’s intended for new bearings but I believe I’ve heard that some guys say you should replace that crush collar every time you retorque that nut. That’s what the crush collar does of courses is sets the on the preload on the bearings. I’m not sure though because for example on wheel-bearings you don’t torque an old bearing anywhere near as tight is you torque a new bearing. Once you’ve overtightened an old crush collar however I’m pretty sure it needs replaced as the way you describe the this one with your bearings tightening up.

So I need to reseal my rear axle on my 89 because its leaking gear oil into the drums, is there any way to replace the seal without using a hydraulic press to remove the axle shafts? I've got the seals for both the axle and the backing plate, I would like to replace both at the same time.

From my 1993 FSM, if the diff is 7.5 in then torque to 80 ft-lbf. If it's a 8 in diff then torque to 145 ft-lbf.
